Acoustics In The Office Environment - Sound Off 5:00-6:00 PM | Drazen Jerkovic, Cooper Lighting Solutions Credits: 1 AIA Credit, Health & Wellness Category Workspace office design has gone through a revolution with the advent of flexible-modular open office plans that promote collaboration and communication. This trend towards “office-hoteling” often includes open ceilings and hard surfaces as the accepted norm. An unintended byproduct of these spaces is reverberation and unwanted noise causing disruption & distractions which may lead to lower productivity and dissatisfaction in the workspace environment, ultimately costing employers the value of the employee. This presentation will teach the designer fundamental vocabulary and available solutions to address such concerns in the modern workspace. Learning Objectives: 1. Learning to speak sound: As with any emerging discipline, basic terminology is crucial to understanding the quantifying information and fortunately there are many similarities to the language of light. Attendees will learn the terms and measurements relative to this space in order to understand how to work with this design 2. Office problems can affect the “soundness” of your bottom line: Attendees will examine how disruptions in the office take a toll on productivity & learn strategies for engendering positive experiences in the work place. 3. Sensibly solving for sound: We will explore some of the current solutions to reduce sound distractions in the modern office environment. Attendees will familiarize themselves with the strength & weaknesses of various tools available and that address this issue. 4. Acoustical design - Making sure your design is sound enough to resonate with your client: We will review how layouts can incorporate both lighting & acoustical metrics to ensure a more productive office environment and provide a salutary solution to ambient noise in the workspace. Attendees will learn how to interpret designs to meet the needs of their client. *Please Note: seminars are located on the second floor of The Permanent venue (up a set of stairs). The second floor does not offer lift/elevator access. Please advise Mac’s II Agencies before the event if assistance is required to ascend the stairs. Our team can assist lifting/moving guests up the stairs to participate in seminars – or – we can arrange alternative methods to deliver seminars to registered guests whom cannot access the second floor. Workspace office design has gone through a revolution with the advent of flexible-modular open office plans that promote collaboration and communication.

Learning Objectives:1. Learning to speak sound: As with any emerging discipline,

basic terminology is crucial to understanding the quantifying information and fortunately there are many similarities to the language of light. Attendees will learn the terms and measurements relative to this space in order to understand how to work with this design

This seminar will describe in detail the phenomenon known as Metamerism. Principles of Colour and Light will be explored to give the participant a greater awareness of these elements as well as their effect on each other in the built environment. At the conclusion of the course, the participant shall be able to apply these concepts to his or her design.

Learning Objectives:1. Examine the properties of colour, how we see colour and

its relationship to the inhabitant of the space.2. Gain knowledge and insight into the study of Metamerism.3. Develop an understanding between the relationship of

colour and light in a space.4. Gain knowledge for the use of colour in projects.

The challenge of controlling noise in interior environments is a frequent point of discussion in the design community. Using office space an example, how can an impactful open-office design be executed without considering the level of sound that projects in the space? Many spaces encourage human interaction, and interaction comes with the byproduct of noise.

More and more consideration has come into play regarding noise levels and workspaces. Last summer, WorkSafe BC introduced policies surrounding sound decibels in loud work environments. By law, all employers whose workers are regularly exposed to noise over 85 dB must have a hearing conservation program that includes hearing protection and annual hearing tests.

These conversations ripple to those who create our spaces: designers, architects, engineers, contractors and more. Design solutions that consider acoustics are the latest trend in the design community and come in a variety of applications – lighting, textiles, carpeting, insulation & drywall and furniture to name a few.

On March 11, be part of the conversation. Join industry professionals to network and discuss the latest trends in design solutions. This event focuses on Lighting, Design & Acoustics and will bring together a variety of manufacturers, specifiers, association representatives and more.

The Permanent330 West Pender Street, Vancouver

Erected a century ago, the venue is named after the BC Permanent & Loan Company, which first opened its’ doors in 1907. In 1935, the Bank of Canada called this place home, leaving it’s mark for decades to come. Recently, The Permanent was completely restored, bringing a landmark, heritage space back to the

community.

The original Bank of Canada vault door still stands tall at the head of our main hall, with the jaw-dropping beautiful stained glass atrium over head. Other neo-classical elements are adorned through out - in the crown mouldings, the bronze chandeliers, and the

many tile mosaics.
