Light powered treatment
One of the toughest challenges faced by engineers, owners and operators is the design and operation of a small-scale decentralized wastewater treatment facility.
Decentralized facilities often receive highly variable flows and loadings which makes it very difficult to consistently meet their effluent permit limits. Added to this, many of these facilities need upgrading, operate on small budgets and have minimal staff.
Technology providers have varied little in their approach to this problem; still relying on costly and complex biological processes designed for larger systems, whose limitations remain unresolved.
An innovative solution was needed. As nature has spent millions of years evolving very efficient biological and chemical processes; Algaewheel looked to these systems (biomimicry) for inspiration.
The result is a revolutionary technology that uses daylight to power a superior treatment biology, providing advanced treatment with little energy or complex operations, transforming the cost and performance of decentralized systems.
Photosynthesis powers advanced treatment by cultivating and sustaining a large and diverse algal and bacterial ecosystem.

OneWater® Treatment redefined
Algaewheel has skilfully optimized the mutually symbiotic relationship between algae and bacteria in a fully engineered treatment system.
Algae grow on rotating wheels, using light, CO2 and nutrients. Through coevolution, algae and bacteria have developed an intricate relationship where the by-products of one group are the inputs for the other. Algae produce oxygen, consume carbon-dioxide, and generate polysaccharides (sugars). Bacteria consume the oxygen and sugars and produce carbon-dioxide — completing the cycle.
When subjected to specific wavelengths of light (PAR) the algal biofilms become saturated with pure
oxygen, enhancing BOD reduction and nitrification.
Activated sludge systems depend upon skilled control of the mixed liquor and aeration to maintain the treatment biology. By contrast, Algaewheel requires less skilled operational management, as the balance of its diverse ecology and chemistry has been expertly engineered to sustain the biology in periods of low flow and to mitigate the effects of shock loadings.
This revolutionary system sustainably delivers the needs of the small-scale market by providing a stable and effective treatment which radically reduces energy and operator requirements.
The only air requirement of the system is a small amount of air to provide the required wheel rotation. Additional treatment is provided by bacteria that grow on biomedia inside the wheels.
The Algal BiofilmThe algae and bacteria form a biofilm on the wheels. The biofilm is saturated with oxygen, a by-product of algal photosynthesis, removing the need to provide costly aeration for the bacteria.

Algaewheel replaces the biological process of the existing system and reduces other plant elements.
Algaewheel is easily integrated into new build facilities or can be used to retrofit failing biological systems without turning existing infrastructure on its head.
Algaewheel’s modular design provides the smart option to replace these systems, as it is built in parallel to existing treatment operations; this transforms the viability of retrofits by avoiding treatment disruption.
In addition, Algaewheel is very cost-effective as it uses much of the existing pre- and post-treatment equipment and can be sized to match historic flows. Further, its modular design facilitates future expansion if needed.
Algaewheel tanks and other key components are delivered to site preassembled, allowing for a very rapid retrofit program – in many cases constructed in weeks rather than months.
