Both change and growth visited Lift Urban Portland this year (July 2013– June 2014). In February, our long-time executive director, Delanie Delimont, left us for other opportunities. In seven years Delanie brought us from a small organization with a few programs to where we are today. We are grateful for her contributions.

When Delanie left, we secured the assistance of the Nonprofit Association of Oregon. They introduced us to Ann Witsil, who served as Interim Executive Director for six months. We asked Ann to keep the ship afloat, on an even keel; but she did more than that. Ann introduced Lift Urban Portland to new community partners and foundation resources. She was a source of enthusiasm and a tremendous booster. We are greatly indebted to her.

Just after the conclusion of our fiscal year, we welcomed our new executive director, Jeff Pazdalski. Jeff has a diverse background with more than 18 years of leadership experience in both nonprofit development and programs. Jeff spent the past seven years with Oregon Children’s Theatre and previously worked with Special Olympics Oregon and the Oregon chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. We are really excited to work with him.

During the leadership changes our programs marched on. We collected and distributed more than 200,000 pounds of food, maintained community gardens, and sponsored educational programs to encourage healthy life choices. Our low-income neighbors also benefited from thousands of hours of volunteer efforts, many through our Adopt-a-High Rise program. Our church and synagogue partners form the bedrock of this program, developing activities that encourage community, learning, and socialization—homework clubs for kids, barbecues, exercise and cooking classes, birthday parties, and dinners. Why are those activities so important? Because many of our neighbors have incomes less than $1,000 per month, have little or no family support, and lack community connections. We are grateful to our partners for their dedication.

This year we renamed our food pantry to honor our long-time volunteer, dear friend, and Oregon Food Bank Volunteer Excellence award winner Preston Holt. To celebrate we engaged one of our program participants—a retired graphic designer—to create a banner welcoming everyone to Preston’s Pantry.

My wish for the coming year is to expand our programs to serve more residents, continue our annual community Christmas dinner, and identify a larger, more accessible location for Preston’s Pantry.
