Lift The Children is a non-profit federally registered society (Charitable registration number: 80569 0690 RR0001) dedicated to seeking out the world’s most destitute children and help provide them with the necessities, training, and inspiration they need to develop, grow, and become self-sufficient.

We work in some of the poorest slums in the world to provide aid DIRECTLY to orphanages caring for their children. 100% of all donations go directly to the orphanages as the John Volken Foundation covers all administrative expenses.

Lift is inclusive of all faiths and cultures, and is committed to feeding and educating children and to LIFT them out of poverty. We are helping support over 10,000 children in more than 80 orphanages.

ERICA DURANCE - BIOGRAPHY

Erica Durance is a Canadian actress. She is

perhaps best known for her role as Lois Lane

in the WB/CW series Smallville. In 2012, Erica

began starring in the lead role in the medical

drama television series Saving Hope. She is also

a producer for the series, now in season 3 of

production.

When she is not Saving Hope, she is fostering

it … giving impoverished children opportunity

through literacy by sponsoring numerous

children in orphanages through Lift the Children

– the stuff real superheroes do.

MICHAEL NICKELS – BIOGRAPHY

Michael Nickels graduated from Guelph University in 1983 in Agribusiness. After working on many farms throughout Ontario, England, Spain, Australia, and Brazil, he bought a farm on Salt Spring Island, where he still lives, and developed Seven Ravens Permaculture Academy and Eco Forest.

In 1990 Michael visited Africa as a tourist with a keen desire to explore the forests and wildlife. After 4 months, he opened up his first of many tree nurseries in Africa, as he felt that he needed to do whatever he could to address the severe state of deforestation.

Over the years, Michael has opened up in excess of 25 nurseries throughout East Africa and has worked with schools to train teachers and youth about trees and sustainable organic agriculture. The success and implementation of the Practical Permaculture Institute in Kenya is a direct result of 25 years of relationship building and honed design approach by Michael Nickels of Seven Raven Permaculture Academy and Eco Forest.

Michael’s work will have a long lasting effect on the well-being of East Africa, as people will have greater food security, better education, and an improved environment.

AARON ELTON – BIOGRAPHY

Aaron Elton has spent the last 9 years of his life living and working in Uganda. He began developing a thesis centered around the concept of creating sustainable land use and production as part of cure the root causes of poverty.

In 2009 he discovered his thesis was completely symbiotic to Permaculture design and has for over 6 years dedicated his life to spreading that knowledge. His company, Love on Land, works with the regions largest steel corporation, Roofings Group. His life’s work has culminated in the development of a sustainability school known as the Forever Forestry Club that will open in September 2014 after three years in development.

His work is founded on a long term plan to enable the orphanages of Africa to become self feeding and self funding under the belief that this will create a generation of problem solvers whose activity in the agriculture sectors in their countries will be part of the solution to ending poverty.

Hello Everyone. It is our pleasure to welcome you to the Lift the Children

Gala tonight.

The work Lift the Children is doing is remarkable. In the past few years they

have taken care of over 10,000 children in 80 orphanages. Now, with your

help, they continue to provide not just the basics of life to these children, but

the resources they need to become self-sufficient.

We have visited Africa and have experienced first-hand the cycle of poverty.

One thing I can tell you for certainty is that there is no greater collateral than

giving someone the chance to escape that cycle of poverty. People want to

give a hand up, not a handout. The impact of what you as a group accomplish

tonight will change the lives of thousands of kids.

We are gratified by your desire to join Lift the Children in reaching out to help

these children all over the world... to enable them to start on a journey of their

own to a meaningful and fulfilling life.

JASON HEWLETT - BIOGRAPHY

Jason Hewlett The Entertainer has appeared at over

2,000 events and venues in the last decade as one of

the country’s premiere corporate event Headliners.

Jason has performed in every major casino in Las

Vegas, appeared on the nationally televised Jerry

Lewis MDA Telethon, and received the “Best of State

Entertainment Award” in his home state of Utah

multiple times.

He began his career with the Las Vegas “Legends

in Concert” and has been a member of the National

Speakers Association since 2003. His show is a

“To lift children out of poverty and educate over 2 million people in 5 years.” For Lift to enable the children it currently cares for, and those it will endeavor to care for in the future become self-sufficient, Lift has begun to implement long term self-sustainability programs with a goal of educating the poor out of poverty.

Lift the Children is committed to a strategy “ of reorienting the agricultural & faming system currently in use in Africa towards methods of food production that are highly productive, highly sustainable and that contribute to the progressive realization of the human right to adequate food.”

The backbone of this strategy is based on the agricultural science of permaculture.

SO WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?

Permaculture is “permanent agriculture”. It mimics natural eco systems to produce more food using fewer resources.

Compared to conventional farming, permaculture:

• Improves soil fertility and water management • Adapts to climate change • Reduces farming costs • Produces higher crop yields• Provides better diet diversity.

The United Nations studies demonstrate that permaculture more than doubles crop yields in African farms.

To that end, in September 2013, Lift the Children formed the Joint African Sustainability Task Force. The mandate of the task force is to:

• Develop self-sustainable agricultural production and education programs.

• Implement self-sustaining agriculture systems cost effectively in Africa

• Build training facilities to for teachers and farmers• Facilitate the sharing of this information

Today, we are proud to announce that since you last raised your hands in support of Lift the Children, we have successfully completed two major permaculture projects in partnership with Michael Nickels from Seven Ravens & Aaron Elton from Love on Land.

First, we built the first Practical Permaculture Institute Academy of Kenya with Michael Nickels and with financial support from Lush Cosmetics and gala supporters.

This academy is the first of 5 education centres that we plan to open over the next five years.

We are teaching African teachers, farmers and children permaculture techniques - not just in the classroom, but in the field. They learn how to work with the land to design and build sustainable food systems, and how to teach others to do the same.

As of May 2014, over 75 teachers have graduated from our Institute. We expect to graduate over 200 teachers annually from each of our 5 planned facilities.

The impact of this program is amplified by directing the training on teachers, who then educate students, and local farmers on Permaculture.

Our second project is equally gratifying as it has made one of our very own Lift the Children orphanages not only self-feeding, but self-funding. After visiting every Lift the Children orphanage to assess suitability for permaculture installations, Aaron Elton identified 5 ideal sites and selected Gathaithi orphanage to be the first. The project is now complete, with pond systems, vegetable gardens, animal systems, a food forest, classroom, a guesthouse, and more. Six months in and Gathaithi is now preparing for a bumper harvest. This pioneering project not only teaches the orphans practical skills and helps them become self-sufficient, but also serves as a model for neighbouring farmers and orphanages to do the same.

Over time, these projects will help to provide mass poverty reduction through education. Our goal is to educate over 2 million people within the next five years.

Lift the children is making an impact in Africa. In addition to providing shelter, nutrition & education for orphans, we are increasing food production by educating teachers and farmers about permaculture.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, the knowledge of permaculture and the know-how of self-

sustainability is permeating down to future generations – from our institutes to teachers,

from teachers to students – and from students to the community.

THE FOUNDERS: Luwalira Robert grew up as a street boy in Kampala City. He was rescued and transformed by Declan O’Toole, a missionary priest. In early 2002 Declan was shot and killed in Northern Uganda. Luwalira started this orphanage later that year in memory of Declan and to give others the same help and hope he was given.

THE CURRENT CENTRE: Home Sweet Orphanage has one large unfinished room that accommodates all the children. It is located on five acres of land, with a piggery, four unfinished classrooms, and a kitchen. Currently the orphanage has no toilets.

SOURCE OF THEIR FUNDING: Lift the Children is currently their only source of ongoing support. They also receive funds from well-wishers.

AREAS OF ENDEAVOR: Home Sweet Orphanage provides three meals a day to all 50 children. They also support the children with medical care, clothing, shelter, and basic primary education.

PRESENT CHALLENGES: Financial struggles are their biggest challenge. They do not have enough funds to start an income-generating business and they need money for toilets and to build dormitories include providing the children with enough food, clothes, and medicine.

THE FOUNDERS: After starting a school in the community, Joyce Omurunga, a teacher, discovered a pressing need to help the orphans that were coming to school. She established the orphanage with Pastor Elisha.

THE CURRENT CENTRE: Eljoy is currently renting the facility. They use one of the rooms as a kitchen during the day and convert it into a bedroom to accommodate the children at night.

SOURCE OF THEIR FUNDING: They receive income through school fees that some children are able to pay, as well as support from the community and well-wishers.

AREAS OF ENDEAVOR: The centre strives to provide children with food, shelter, clothing, and education.

PRESENT CHALLENGES: The most challenging problem they face is providing shelter; the cost of the rental rooms they use is quite expensive. Other challenges include providing the children with enough food, clothes, and medicine.
