This issue of LifeTimes focuses on the connections and relationships between people that keep Tuomey Healthcare System and Sumter strong in these times.

These are tough times in which we

find ourselves. Every day brings

more news of businesses failing

and families facing unemployment. They

are difficult times, but they are also times of

hope. Because we are NOT alone. Whenever

things become difficult, that is when you

see the strongest teamwork. If we share the

work, share the responsibility, do what we

can, and give back when we can, everything

becomes a little easier for everybody. Now,

more than ever before, it’s the responsibility

of those who can to give back to the commu-

nity in which we find ourselves.

This issue of LifeTimes focuses on the

connections and relationships between

people that keep Tuomey Healthcare System

and Sumter strong in these times. It profiles

people like Richard Moses and Glen Sharp,

pillars of the Sumter community, who have

dedicated their time and energies in so many

ways to Tuomey over the years and who

continue to do so with passion and fervor. It

also introduces new programs such as the

Women of Tuomey, which seeks to connect

the many strong women of Sumter with

issues in healthcare that are a priority to

them. They, like our Tuomey Fellows gradu-

ates, will serve not only as ambassadors for

Tuomey, but also as valued advisors to keep

our healthcare system focused on the needs

of Sumter.

In addition, this issue of LifeTimes

highlights the R Factor program, a return

investment from The Tuomey Foundation in

the employees who have so often invested in

The Foundation. It’s an incredibly exciting

program, one which promises to benefit the

community as well as Tuomey. The enthu-

siasm with which the employees of Tuomey

have approached the program is truly as-

tounding, and the effects the program has on

Tuomey are equally impressive. Its success

inspires hope in these difficult times.

Furthermore, this issue of LifeTimes

serves as the annual report for The Tuomey

Foundation, Tuomey Healthcare System’s

strongest ally and partner. There is no bet-

ter example of teamwork than The Founda-

tion. The work of the volunteers, donorsand

board members of The Foundation not

only keeps our healthcare system going,

but it also fuels the outreach programs

that support the Sumter community. They

continuously give back, and they do so with

abounding generosity.

Most importantly, I hope this issue of

LifeTimes leaves you filled with hope for the

future. The people and programs featured

in this issue represent just a few of the many

individuals in Sumter who make a difference

on a daily basis. It’s these people and our

relationships with them that enable Tuomey

to be a first-class medical center. And it’s all

right here in Sumter.

Sincerely,

The Women of Tuomey program is an exciting new form of outreach from The Tuomey Foundation intended to build relationships between the women of Sumter and Tuomey Healthcare System.

Drawing upon the vast network of

women who have graduated from

Tuomey Fellows, or who are oth-

erwise involved in the activities of Tuomey

or The Foundation, the Women of Tuomey

program is predicated on the ever-increas-

ing importance of women as healthcare

decision makers for their families.

“The idea behind the Women of Tuomey is to promote awareness of what Tuomey has to offer the women of our community,” explains Norma Stone, a Sumter resident and member of the five-person committee that organized the first Women of Tuomey event. To this end, each Women of Tuomey event will feature an educational section about some of the unique services and ben-efits Tuomey offers women.

This year’s event allowed each member of Women of Tuomey to host a table for seven women of their choosing at a special luncheon held at Tuomey. The women truly served as hostesses, decorating and provid-ing the table settings for their own tables.

“Each table had a very different dynamic,” observes Hayes Jones, Annual Fund Direc-tor for the Foundation. “Some hostesses

chose to invite family, others chose to invite friends… It created a group of varying ages and associations.”

“Even though they might be thousands of miles away, they are still able to share in the experience of the birth of their child. It is a blessing no one should have to miss, no matter where they are.” Norma Stone

This gave the event a very personalized feel, and perhaps made much stronger con-nections than would otherwise have been possible. “It brought a lot of new faces to the hospital, and it’s because people are more eager to come to an event when they are invited by their friend or family member,” Jones continues. “It’s building new rela-tionships that stem from the strength of an existing network.”

The educational section of this year’s luncheon concerned a special service that is available at Tuomey for the women of Shaw Air Force Base. For pregnant women whose husbands are serving overseas, Tuomey is

able to use webcam technology to allow the husbands to see their newborn child im-mediately following delivery and for several days afterwards. “Even though they may be thousands of miles away, they are still able to share in the experience of the birth of their child,” Stone says. “It is a blessing no one should have to miss, no matter where they are.” Although the webcam technology has been available at Tuomey for less than a year, its popularity has been overwhelm-ing; women call, write, and sometimes even email to ask to be involved with the service.

Inspired by the importance of the webcam technology for Sumter and Shaw, the Women of Tuomey at this year‘s event donated enough money to maintain and expand the webcam service over the next year. This is especially significant because the purpose of the event was friendship and fellowship, not fundraising. In the coming years, the Women of Tuomey plan to host annual events, hopefully gaining new mem-bers each time. “It’s unique to The Founda-tion because it’s centered on women and women’s issues,” Jones says. “It promotes friendships, which we hope to see grow over time.”

Everyone – employees, patients, donors, physicians, board members, volunteers and the whole Sumter community – has a role, because everyone is connected. We all have a shared interest and a shared goal: to create a healthy community. At Tuomey, we understand that quality healthcare doesn’t start and stop at the hospital doors, and that the collective whole cannot function without the work of every individual part. Together, we are Tuomey.

“It’s hard to think of anything that touches more lives than healthcare…”

“I don’t think we would have ever guessed all that would have happened. It’s evolving, which is a testament to the

leadership that they’ve let the hospital evolve with it.”

the hospital’s cafeteria into an Olympic village, a tropical island

getaway, a baseball field and Hollywood. This year, the employee

campaign committee chose to use the popular show Extreme

Makeover: Home Edition as the inspiration for their decorations. A

20-ft. Tuomey façade was erected in the cafeteria and surrounded

by bricks and construction materials, and employees were given

hardhats to wear. “We tried to come up with something that every-

body would be enthused about and that would make everyone want

to take part,” says Burgess, who served on the Employee Campaign

Committee this year. “It felt like we were really living the show.”

“Through all the campaigns we try to do something not only for the employees but for the community as well.” Peggie Burgess

Although the renovations won’t be started until later this year,

the benefits of the employee campaign are already felt at Tuomey.

For longtime Tuomey employees, the campaign gives them the op-

portunity to direct positive changes in the organization they love

so much. “The emphasis is on the future and the vision we and the

administration have for this place,” says Moe Lipscombe, mailroom

clerk and 24-year Tuomey employee. “It really elevates camarade-

rie because you’re all part of a team trying to do good things.”

And for relative newcomers to the Tuomey family, it provides

an easy way to be involved and introduced to the spirit of Tuomey.

“Initially, I wanted to be a part so I could meet people around the

hospital, because I’m new,” says Joe DuRant, an accountant at

Tuomey and another Employee Campaign Committee member.

“But the more I saw how people invest in the hospital, the more it

encouraged me. This is an incredible place to work, and I want to

continue to do my best to help the organization succeed.”

Ultimately, the continued success of the employee campaign is

evidence of the passion and loyalty found at Tuomey, both of which

are reciprocal between employees and employers. “I think it comes

down to the people we have here at Tuomey,” DuRant says. “They

really care about the jobs that they do, and the administration really

cares about them, and it all builds on itself.” Truly, Tuomey is a

wonderful place.

“The employee campaigns help you see that you can make a difference. Though you might just be one person, you can make a difference.” Clyde Wilson

There are many things that make Tuomey a wonderful place, but nothing speaks to the strength of character, passion and loyalty found at Tuomey than the continued success of the biennial employee campaigns.

“It’s something your children and grandchildren can see and say, ‘This is

what my mother or my grandmother did, this is a part of her…”

Peggie Burgess

Since 2000, the employees of Tuomey have given back well

over $1.3 million to various projects. This year’s campaign,

“Building a Better Tuomey,” inspired Tuomey’s employees

to donate more than $240,000 for renovation of Tuomey’s patient

floors and west addition. Tuomey’s “Extreme Makeover” will hap-

pen over the next two to three years, and it will include refitting of

nursing stations, an overhaul of hospital hallways and matching

artwork as well. In the end, Tuomey will have a brand new look.

“It was amazing to see how willing people have been to give back to this organization. They don’t see it as an expense, they see it as an investment.” Joe DuRant

Previous campaigns have funded a wide range of projects includ-

ing support for the Bell Women and Infants Pavilion, a covered

walkway to connect the public parking garage with the hospital,

a community outreach fund and a scholarship program. For the

employees who participated in the campaign this year, the decision

to renovate Tuomey with this campaign’s proceeds was a rather

obvious one.

“Tuomey is home for us,” says Clyde Wilson, boiler operator and

plumbing specialist at Tuomey. “You have to take care of home first.”

And the renovation will be a lasting legacy for the employees who

devote so much time and energy to Tuomey and the community it

serves. “It’s something your children and grandchildren can see and

say, ‘This is what my mother or my grandmother did, this is a part

of her,’” explains Peggie Burgess, an oncology ward clerk who has

worked at Tuomey for over 30 years.

“Tuomey is like home. We’re here more hours than we’re at home sometimes, so you want here to be as comfortable as home.” Peggie Burgess

Tuomey’s employee campaigns are renowned for their decorat-

ing themes. In past years, the decorations team has transformed Phot

Why Tuomey: “My family has a long his-

tory with Tuomey, from my grandparents

down to my children. We are so fortunate

to have an institution of the professional

caliber of Tuomey in our community.”

On Sumter: “I spent countless hours at

Tuomey during lengthy hospitalizations

of both my parents, so I can speak of the

doctors’, nurses’ and support personnel’s

genuine care and concern for the patient

and family from first-hand experience.

Several of them have become good friends.”

Why Tuomey: “I’m a big believer in the

idea that you get out of a community what

you’re willing to put into it. We all have a

responsibility to help make this commu-

nity better, and that includes helping to

maintain a strong medical community. By

serving on the board, I’m hoping to learn

more about Tuomey and become a better

ambassador for the hospital.”

On Sumter: “Over the past 15 years, Tuom-

ey has grown from a community hospital to

a major regional medical center. The nice

thing is that you get quality healthcare right

here in Sumter, but you know the people

who are providing it.”

Why Tuomey: “Tuomey plays a vital role

in the community, not only as a healthcare

provider but also as a major employer and

major supporter of many events in the

Sumter area. It has so many wonderful

things to offer.”

On Sumter: “The community of Sumter

is a great place to work and raise a family.

Having Shaw Air Force Base as a neighbor

brings such purpose to the community, and

we’re all one big family.”

The People Behind Tuomey

When you first meet Glen Sharp

and Richard Moses, one thing

is blatantly apparent: they are

good friends. They have worked with Tuom-

ey and The Tuomey Foundation for many

years, and they bring considerable experi-

ence with them from different backgrounds.

While their modesty prevents them

from divulging very much information

about themselves, both men are incredibly

accomplished. Moses was born and raised

in Sumter, only leaving for a short period

to attend college and serve in World War II.

Sharp, on the other hand, moved to Sumter

as a young entrepreneur after his own ser-

vice in the war. Moses worked in real estate

and served as mayor of Sumter from 1972 to

1974; Sharp, with his brother Walter, devel-

oped Suburban Propane Gas, Inc., which af-

ter 44 years merged into SC Electric & Gas

– SCANA. Both men have been instrumental

in the development of Tuomey and The

Tuomey Foundation; Sharp was a pivotal

leader behind the initial fund drive to build

the hospital tower expansion, and Moses

was a charter member of the Board.

In recognition of their years of dedicated

service, The Tuomey Foundation’s Board of

Governors and the Trusteeship Committee

voted to make Sharp and Moses the first

lifetime members of the Board of Governors.

They will serve as voting members of the

Board for as long as they like. “I feel highly

honored and flattered to be chosen for this,”

Moses says. “It’s hard to think of anything

that touches more lives than healthcare,

and it is wonderful to be a part of that.”

Sharp agrees. “It has been an interesting

experience to see Tuomey evolve over time,”

Sharp observes. “I’m glad I get to continue

to do so.”For more with Norma, see the womeN oF tuomey article oN p. 7 oF this issue oF LifeTimes.

9 Tuomey Healthcare System ::: Feature 10Lifetimes Spring 2009

From all accounts, the ideas behind the R Factor program aren’t revolutionary, or even that surprising. But somehow, presented as they are, they have created ripples of change at Tuomey.

event + reaction = outcome

R Factor comes to TuomeyThe R Factor program, a ten-month course brought to Tuomey Healthcare System through the

resources of The Tuomey Foundation, serves as a mechanism by which these everyday,

common-sense ideas can be incorporated into both work and home life. Its premise

is a simple formula: events, plus an individual’s reaction to them, result in a certain

outcome. If the individual can work to control their reaction to events, then they

can achieve a desired outcome. To this end, the R Factor program teaches ten

life skills designed to help individuals understand themselves enough to be

able to control their responses to life situations, both at work and at home.

To date, five hundred employees of Tuomey have already completed

the program. A second class of five hundred more employees has just

started its R Factor ‘journey’. Although the R Factor program is based

on the idea that “individual breakthroughs drive organizational

breakthroughs,” Tuomey has made an effort to send entire depart-

ments through the program simultaneously. The result has been that

the language of the R Factor program has been incorporated into everyday

departmental conversation, thus helping individuals practice and reinforce

the ideas of the program in their daily working environment.

The response from all people involved has been overwhelmingly positive. “The R

Factor helps with your relationships at home, it helps with your relationships at work,

and it definitely helps with your patients, who you see every day,” says Janet Tanner, an

endoscopy nurse who was a member of the first R Factor class. Part of the R Fac-

tor program has participants examine their own personality types, through the

completion of a DISC personality profile. It allows them to see both their positive

and their negative traits, and also gives them a better understanding of how

they and their coworkers perceive their actions. “I say something sometimes,

and I realize now that the other person perceives it a lot differently than the way

I’m intending it to be expressed,” Tanner explains. “It has caused me to listen

more than I speak.”

Another advantage of departments completing the program together is that

coworkers’ understanding of each others’ personality and working types has greatly

increased departmental communication. Michael Keenan, an R Factor program participant

who works in Information Services at Tuomey, has seen this change in his own department.

“People you work with, you can say, ‘I understand them now’... My coworker needs to be a certain

personality type, because the job she has is one where she can’t miss any detail,” observes Keenan. “It makes

you understand that every choice has a consequence no matter what you do, and that choice is going to have not only a

consequence for yourself, but it’s going to affect other people.”

Perhaps the most impressive evidence of R Factor’s success at Tuomey is

the tide of change the first R Factor class has caused in Tuomey as a whole.

“The whole foundation of the R Factor is the knowledge that you make

your decisions based on your own personal core values,” explains Janelle

DeLuco, an administrative director at Tuomey and the lead facilitator of

the R Factor program. “How you link that to the organization is that the

organization has core values, too, and you have to make sure that your

personal values link to the organizational values.” Tuomey has rede-

fined its core values as a result of feedback from participants in the

first R Factor class; they are now I CARE (Integrity, Compassion,

Accountability, Respect and Excellence). In an effort to place

the value of life skills as high as competency, Tuomey has also

incorporated accountability for the new core values into

employee performance appraisals.

All of this has been possible thanks to the generous

support of The Tuomey Foundation, which has invested

over $65,000 in Tuomey’s employees through the R

Factor program. “I think we always knew we wanted the

program, we just needed to figure out how to get it here.

And [The Tuomey Foundation] was the how,” explains

DeLuco. The R Factor program is one of the many initia-

tives The Tuomey Foundation supports, but one that is

unique in its benefits for both hospital employees and

the community of Sumter as a whole. “We [at Tuomey]

have an obligation to the community to be ambassa-

dors of healthcare and ambassadors to the community,”

DeLuco says. “I think we owe it to them.” With the help

of The Tuomey Foundation, the R Factor program enables

Tuomey employees to be those ambassadors.

Ultimately, the R Factor program’s presence at Tuomey

reveals a lot about the environment and culture of Tuomey.

First and foremost, the Foundation’s commitment to bring a

program that helps employees in all aspects of their lives speaks

to the Foundation’s continued support of both Tuomey and the

community of Sumter. Furthermore, the willingness of the staff to

welcome and integrate the ideas of the program is indicative of the

spirit of the employees here. But perhaps the biggest testament of all

to the culture of Tuomey is the openness of the administration and the

organization to adapt and evolve along with its employees. In the end, while

the R Factor is a good program filled with helpful ideas, its effect at Tuomey

is purely a result of the people here.Editor’s Note: The R Factor: Ten Skills For Maximizing the One Thing You Control is the work of Timothy Kight and Focus 3. For more information, please see www.Focus3.biz .

“The R Factor is common-sense knowledge. But the world is so fast-paced, sometimes we need a reminder to stop and look at ourselves and how we work. ”

- michael Keenan

“I work with a lot of intelligent people, but we sometimes get so wrapped up in the details and what’s going on that we forget about the people. I think what the R Factor has done is it’s made us think about each other as people, and not just as staff. ”

- Brenda mobley

“Since my fiancée and I went through R Factor, our communication level is far above what it was. Every employee in this hospital should go through R Factor to learn to balance home and work.”

- Lee pitt

Another year has passed, and it’s again time to look back on the many things that The Tuomey Foundation has ac-

complished over the past year. It was not an easy year, being one filled with economic challenges across the globe. We felt these challenges here in Sumter, too; for the first time ever, our invest-ment portfolio took a significant loss, a fact that is reflected in our financial report over the fol-lowing pages. In spite of these difficulties, 2008 was still a hugely successful year, as the Foun-dation continues to reach into the community with its bedrock programs and with several new ones that are just beginning. This annual report details the many impacts these programs have on the community, and the many ways in which the Foundation strives to give back to those who support it.

We have always emphasized the fact that The Tuomey Foundation is built on relationships first. This has never been more apparent than in 2008. The employee campaign, always a source of great joy for Tuomey and the Foundation, was an incredible success in a year in which the eco-nomic climate would have predicted otherwise. Additionally, the Tuomey Fellows program, now

in its ninth class, has given the Foundation over 140 ambassadors in the commu-

nity. These programs, like the many others supported by the Foundation,

are rooted in relationships and the passion that people feel for

this organization and the work that we do. We can look back

on 2008 and be proud of our accomplishments and the ways in which we have banded together to face difficult times.

Furthermore, we can look forward to 2009. It will be a challenging time, but it will also be an exciting time. As the stories in this maga-zine reveal, our boards are more involved than ever, our planned giving program is gaining mo-mentum, exciting new programs like Women of Tuomey are taking root in the community, and established programs like Tuomey Fellows and our outreach programs continue to be strong. The beauty of 2008 was that we worked harder than ever before to establish new relationships, to reconnect relationships that perhaps were lost along the way and to remain true to the rela-tionships and expectations that already existed. This next year promises to see a continuation and amplification of that effort, and we welcome the continued growth of The Tuomey Founda-tion family.

In the end, it’s this family that makes all of the sto-ries in this magazine happen; none of these things would be possible without the help and support of our donors, board members, volunteers, committee members and staff. It’s the people who are involved with the Foundation who make these programs a success, and we are truly blessed by your time, talents and generosity. On behalf ofThe Tuomey FoundationBoard of Governors, the caretaker of all that has been entrusted, we congratulate you on another successful year, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The Tuomey Fellows program has opened my eyes a lot. I’ve been able to go places the average person can’t go, and see things only people who work here get to see. It’s been very educational and very worthwhile.

Since 2001, the Tuomey Fellows pro-

gram has given business and volun-

teer leaders from the community a

behind-the-scenes look at what goes on at

Tuomey and in healthcare in general. Partic-

ipants attend healthcare-oriented class ses-

sions, focusing on everything from surgical

services and cardiac procedures to adminis-

tration of a community nonprofit hospital. In

addition, they tour the hospital and observe

its intricate workings, from surgeries to the

emergency room. By the time they graduate,

they are very knowledgeable in the daily op-

erations of the Tuomey Healthcare System

and are ambassadors for their community’s

hospital.

A new program for The Tuomey

Foundation this year, the Gover-

nor’s Circle is a way for individuals

who have rotated off of the Board of Gover-

nors to stay connected to the Foundation

and the hospital. There are no obligations

or duties associated with membership in

the Governor’s Circle; it is purely a way for

former Board members to stay involved as

advisors and advocates. As of now, there are

about 18 members in the Governor’s Circle.

the Foundation looks forward to the contin-

ued growth of this exciting new program.

I just want to say thank you, Tuomey, for having this program where I can interact with other kids who have asthma.

CamP SCamP

Through support from The Tuomey Foundation, Tuomey’s

Industrial Medicine and Wellness Program brings proac-

tive disease prevention and healthcare services out into the

community. Last year, the program provided on site, free wellness ser-

vices and education to thousands of Sumter-area residents through

school and church health fairs, community-wide events, college class-

es and monthly seminars at churches, senior and community centers.

The services assist the entire community, including everything from

poison prevention for elementary school kids to blood pressure

checks for adults.

SAMORIA SESSIONS // CAMP SCAMP PARTICIPANT

Debbie Kitterman, mother of two daughters

who both attend Camp SCAMP, says the

supervision is a great comfort to par-

ents concerned that physical activi-

ty might trigger an asthmatic event.

“It felt good to know that somebody

was there who would really take

care of them,” says Kitterman. Ul-

timately, the goal of Camp SCAMP

is to teach children about their con-

dition so they can monitor, control

and live with it. As Camp SCAMP volun-

teer nurse Samantha Thomas explains,

“The more children we teach about

asthma, the more we can

prevent hospitalizations

and acute attacks.”

Camp SCAMP is a traditional sum-

mer camp for asthmatic children

funded by The Tuomey Founda-

tion. 2008 marked the 17th year for the

camp, which works to educate kids aged 5

to 12 on their disease amidst a free, fun and

well-monitored camp experience. The camp

introduces asthmatic children to other chil-

dren with the same condition, and it pro-

vides an opportunity for healthy physical

activity under the supervision of respira-

tory therapists and counselors.

I support Tuomey and the Foundation because I know the value of having and keeping a good healthcare facility in the community.

Last September, The Tuomey Foundation Tenth An-

nual Golf Classic was held at the Sunset Country

Club. A total of 32 teams participated, composed of

people from businesses and companies that work with or

have relationships with Tuomey. The event raised a total of

$32,707.00 (net proceeds), to benefit the unrestricted fund.

This fund, which is overseen by The Tuomey Foundation

Board of Governors, allows the Foundation to support vari-

ous projects and programs undertaken by Tuomey Health-

care System, such as Camp SCAMP, SAFE KIDS, wellness

screenings and more.

Approximately 100 peo-ple attended the event in 2008, which was held at the Swan Lake Visitor’s Center and included members of The Tuomey Founda-tion’s Board of Governors and Tuomey Re-gional Medical Center’s Board of Trustees. For The Tuomey Foundation, the barbeque is a way to demonstrate the value and im-portance of physician relationships within the Tuomey community. Those in atten-dance were treated to great food, fellowship and the sounds of Acoustic Indigo.

When our contributors sup-

port The Tuomey Founda-

tion, they invest in the future of

our community. Contributors may select the

specific program they wish to support, or they

may choose to give an unrestricted gift. Unre-

stricted gifts are applied by the Founda-

tion toward projects and programs where

the needs are greatest. In either case, these

donations make a vital difference in Sumter’s

long-term health by helping to fund the many

programs detailed within this magazine.

For over 10 years, SAFE KIDS Sumter County has worked

to prevent accidental injury – a leading cause of death

for youngsters throughout the U.S. – to children under

age 14. The program educates parents, caregivers and children

on child safety issues, including such issues as vehicle and bike

safety, fire and water safety, electrical dangers, drug abuse and

more. In particular, SAFE KIDS Sumter County focuses on car

seat and sports safety, offering classes on car seat installation

for parents and proper helmet adjustment for kids. Each year,

SAFE KIDS Sumter County distributes free bike helmets and

free or discounted car seats, visits schools and safety fairs and

gives tours on the Safety Shuttle.

Each year, the Tuomey Society Gala is held to honor members of the Tuomey So-

ciety and their contributions to the Foundation. It is always one of the most

exciting social events of the year, and this year’s Gala was no exception. The

2008 Tuomey Society Gala was held at the lovely home of Mr. & Mrs. Hubert Osteen

and catered by Jack Brantley of Aberdeen Catery. A good time was had by all, and The

Foundation is thrilled to honor these outstanding donors.

The Tuomey Society is The Tuomey Foundation’s most prestigious giving society, recogniz-

ing individuals who contribute $1,000 or more annually to the Foundation. Started in 2001

with 101 members, the Tuomey Society has grown to a record number of 272 members in

2008. This is particularly significant given the economic climate of 2008; the continued sup-

port of donors is truly the heart and soul of the Foundation and the programs detailed in this

magazine. A complete list of 2008 Tuomey Society members can be found throughout the

2008 Annual Report section.

Planned GiVinG TaSK FoRCe

Last year, The Tuomey Foundation kicked

off its Planned Giving initiative, which seeks

to make donors aware of the benefits of

charitable estate and gift planning options.

Used by many non-profit organizations,

planned gifts maturing on a regular basis

help a charitable organization survive the

ebb and flow of gift receipt from annual giv-

ing and other fundraising programs. For

Tuomey Healthcare System, a known

group of future planned gifts functions

as a living endowment. Furthermore,

this type of gift often has considerable

benefits for donors, as well.

Planned giving is new for The Tuomey Foundation, so a task force was created to make recommendations of the goals and di-rection the Foundation should take with this type of fundraising. Among other things, the Task Force recommended that The Tuomey Foundation employ multi-channel mar-keting in its approach to a comprehensive planned gifts program, create a Professional Advisory Council and sponsor estate-plan-ning seminars throughout the year. Under the guidance of this advice, the Planned Giving program promises to be an exciting new growth opportunity for The Tuomey Foundation.

For more information on the Foundation’s Planned Giving program, please visit the web-site at www.tuomey.com .

MARY ELIZABETH BLANCHARD, MD // TUOMEY SOCIETY DONOR

Being a Sumter native, I understand how important

it is to have a world class hospital right here at home. Our hospital has a mission,

which it executes with passion. I am very proud

of Tuomey, and very happy to support it

and The Tuomey Foundation.

As a physician who worked at Tuomey for 30 years, it means a lot to me that the Foundation focuses on community programs that prevent disease and hospitalization.

In 2008, The Tuomey Foundation was awarded a $1.7 million grant from The Duke Endowment to help fund the Nursing Education Consortium, a collaborative educational effort

between Tuomey Healthcare System, Clarendon Health System, Kershaw County Medical Center and Central Carolina Technical College. The Consortium’s mission is to further the education of Central Carolina’s nursing students and to alleviate the nursing shortage currently felt by all three counties.

With the help of The Duke Endowment grant, the Nursing Education Consortium will be able to hire additional instructors, a medical technology specialist and purchase more nursing simula-tors, factors that will increase the output of graduates from the Central Carolina nursing program.

Nursing simulators are computerized mannequins designed to enable students to practice techniques in a hands-on, safe envi-ronment, and they are beginning to play an ever-increasing role in nursing education. The simulators are able to talk about where they hurt, cry and even scream, testing patient-student interaction in addition to honing technical skills.

While not a substitute for clinical experience or traditional classroom teaching, nursing simulators reinforce and enhance information learned in other environments. With new simulators and an increased nursing faculty, the Consortium will be able to increase the number of nursing school graduates from 60 to 100 per year.
