COVER Bringing the Attwood’s experience to Mount Gambier Attwood’s Shoes has been a part of the Naracoorte retail landscape for more than 25 years and with a proven reputation John and Annmarie Attwood saw an opportunity to expand their brand and service into Mount Gambier. That was 12 months ago and John and Annmarie believe the one year anniversary celebrations will be the

first of many. The Mitchell Street store continues to thrive by word of mouth and people just ‘discovering’ us. “We are off the main street which is much for easier parking and access for customers,” Annmarie said. “Just around the corner from ladies wear Redgum Country, opposite Subway and on your way to popular Belgiornos Café and the

Oatmill cinema.”Annmarie is the face of the Mount Gambier store, with daughter Sophie Ann lending a helping hand in between completing Year 12 at Tenison Woods College. Annmarie brings with her a wealth of experience in footwear and the same friendly service that has been maintained from Attwood’s Shoes in Naracoorte. “We are all

about quality shoes and quality service,” Annmarie said. John continues to manage the Naracoorte store with daughter Zoe who joined the family business full-time in 2012. Both Zoe and Sophie Ann have grown up around the industry and within the business and in their own right provide an excellent level of service. “Basically we are here to help - we are

all about finding solutions for people,” Annmarie said. “And we enjoy working in with the local podiatrists. John said that because Attwood’s Shoes are independent they do all their own buying. “So you won’t see the mix that we have in store anywhere else,” he said. Ziera (formerly Kumfs) is the marquee brand of Attwood’s Shoes - merging style and comfort like never before and also stocking a wide range of European brands. “It’s all about good shoes,” said Annmarie. John and Annmarie are second generation shoe retailers. “There are a lot of people out there that still want the experience of trying on shoes and getting advice from someone with over 20 years knowledge of fitting and footwear,” they said. There is no better time to head into Attwood’s Mount Gambier with this season’s winter stock now in store.

Southern Grampians Shire Council officially opened its newest playground last week - the multi-million

LOCAL Million dollar playground unveiled – Lilly Appleton and April Rohde, who were the joint winners of a naming and colouring competition that Council held earlier this year. The $1.66 million project has been funded through $1.05 million from the Federal Government Regional Development Australia Fund, $160,000 from Places Victoria and more than $450,000 from council. The project delivers an accessible playground, foreshore development including

dollar project officially unveiled on March 29. The playground, which will be known as the Lakes Edge Adventure

Playground Hamilton, was named by two grade two students from the Balmoral Community College

integrated art works, new picnic, barbeque and toilet facilities that use winding pathways and graded earthworks to link zones and equipment with gradients that meet access requirements. The improved foreshore will increase the profile of Lake Hamilton and provide families and young people with a safe and attractive environment to play and interact with others. The playground offers a range of

play equipment including more than 90 experiences suitable for a diverse range of age groups and abilities. The design for the playground was completed in consultation with the community and incorporates a strong stone, water and timber theme reflecting Hamilton’s unique natural environment.Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Albert Calvano said the council was pleased to see the new

playground open in Hamilton in time for the Easter period. “I would like to congratulate both Lilly and April on their great name for the playground and it was terrific to meet them both as well as their classmates when they had the first play on the new equipment today,” the mayor said. “This project is a terrific asset for both Hamilton and the shire that will ensure that children of all ability levels have equal access to playgrounds

so they can learn, grow and develop during play. “I look forward to the new playground receiving lots of use by children from across the region for many years to come.” Above - SGSC Mayor Cr Albert Calvano and SGSC CEO Richard Perry

join with students from Balmoral Community College in officially opening Hamilton’s newest playground - Lakes Edge Adventure Playground Hamilton.

Dedicated classical musicians from around the Limestone Coast will have the chance tojoin a new symphony

orchestra this season.Under the baton of internationally trained conductor Angus Christie, the Limestone

Coast Symphony Orchestra will begin rehearsals on April 29. Mr Christie, who worked extensively overseas

before re-settling in Hamilton with his family, has coordinated a similar project in Hamilton which runs its own symphony orchestra for a similar time period each year and has done so now for the past eight years. The Hamilton Symphony Orchestra has around 50 members, works with a guest artist each year and also offers local composers a platform for works to be performed. The Mount Gambier project will culminate this season in a gala concert at the Sir Robert HelpmannTheatre on June 30.This exciting opportunity

became possible when the project attracted $3000 in fundingfrom Country Arts SA and $1000 from Mount Gambier City Council.Project director Jennie Matthews said the organising committee was thrilled for theregion’s musicians who often miss out on playing in large groups.“If people in the South East want to play in a music group like a symphony orchestra thisisn’t possible unless they travel to the city” she said. “Travelling hundreds of kilometres each week to rehearsals is simply out of the

question for regional Limestone Coast residents.” The orchestra is currently looking to

recruit the region’s keen instrumentalists and people wishing to assist with the project. All are welcome, no auditions are required and participation is free.To register interest contact Jennie Matthews on [email protected] or phone 0409 180 950.

The Mount Gambier Public Library celebrates its last market of the season this Sunday, and will also mark its two year anniversary since beginning in 2010. For a project that began with just 15 stalls, the monthly Sunday market now has held up to 55 stalls, catering

LOCAL Library market season set to enjoy last hurrah as spices, preserves, wine, meats, chocolates, and cheeses, with stalls offering a variety of hot and cold food and drink for lunch. For the kids on the day, there will be a jumping castle and face painting. There will also be a variety of things to buy at children’s prices, including hand crafted pieces starting at just $3. The Youth Week activities will also be running on the day, including a scavenger hunt at 11am and young local talent taking to the stage, including Lizzie Coke, Anna Coke, Tom Wilson and Katie Slattery. As this is the last market of the season, until it all ramps up again in the warmer months later this year, this is your last chance to buy anything that you have had your eye on, including some fantastic ideas for Mother’s Day. You will be supporting local producers while having confidence in the quality and standard of the product. The library has big visions for coming market seasons, including more entertainment and trying

for the whole family with local produce, live entertainment and a wide variety of unique stalls. With an average crowd of 2500 people from across the region, this Sunday’s final market until later this year is expected to attract around 3000 people for not only the market, but

also for the Youth Week activities running on the same day. The library’s Sunday market has never gone backwards, adapting into a family fun day where people can stay from 11am-2pm to browse stalls, have a picnic and absorb the local talent of emerging artists and crafts people. Stalls range from locally handmade products, including limestone sculptures, restored furniture, candles and toys, to a range of beautiful hand crafted clothing and jewellery. There will be an extensive range of local gourmet produce such

to make each each Sunday market a little different. The library focuses on giving back to the customer and

producer – so come along and see all that the local community has to offer. Last minute stalls are also still welcome so

don’t hesitate to contact the library for any queries on (08)8721 2540.

week so try and avoid hot topics and issues you know will get those around you fired up. Rather than talking religion, politics and world peace, perhaps stick to the weather and a movie you’re hoping to go and see.

Gemini There will definitely be tension

in the air as you end up in somewhat of a power struggle with a colleague or a romantic partner. It’s going to be all about compromise and without giving all the ground, things will go a lot smoother if bring a spirit of negotiation to the table.

Cancer Looms as a week where financial and legal issues

rear their head - it’s not anything particularly serious, just more about tying up loose ends. You will suffer your share of injustice this week but take it on the chin and take your mind off things with an indulgent massage or pampering session.

Leo Could be a tough week on the health

front so try and help the situation by avoiding junk food and alcohol. A good time to touch base with close friends as well.

Virgo Keep things risk-free this week

- on the professional front and definitely on the personal front. Financial prudence is also advised. Good news is looming on the career front so look forward to being offered a new challenge and/or position.

Libra While it’s probably time to let some

long-held resentment towards a loved one go - this isn’t the week to confront your demons and clear the air so instead focus that energy on a creative project. A good time to start planning a trip as well - the break would do you good and you deserve it.

Scorpio Technology can be friend or foe and

this week be careful with just what you send and to whom. You could come into some unexpected money that allows you to treat yourself with an indulgent treat.

Sagittarius Remember that your reputation

counts for everything in business so make sure you maintain your honest approach. Do not be coerced by a superior to lower your standards - you will get back up on your stance from other colleagues.

Capricorn You might think your take charge

attitude is getting you somewhere at work but beware - don’t underestimate the need to be flexible, especially when dealing with clients. Going that extra mile for a customer could reap unexpected rewards.

Aquarius You will be bombarded with red tape

this week and it might even require enlisting the help of a legal professional. Things are going well on the homefront though so let that be a welcome distraction.

LOCAL Homecoming queen The Returning Young Performers Showcase will be a feature of the 2013 Promenade of Sacred Music Program. The committee is excited to welcome home to Hamilton - Conrad Hamill and Sarina Walter who will perform as part of this year’s event. Last week we looked at Conrad’s resume and this week we take a look at what Sarina has been up to since leaving the region. Hailing from the Western District, Sarina Walter has recently graduated from the

University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Music majoring in performance. While at the Conservatorium Sarina (pictured below) was a member of both the Symphony and String Orchestras and also had the opportunity to work with the Australian Youth Orchestra. She has taken masterclasses with pedagogues such as Prof. Hartmutt Lindemann, Rachael Beesley and Dr. Curt Thompson. Currently studying repertoire primarily with Michael

Loftus-Hills, Sarina works throughout Melbourne teaching privately, managing and tutoring young orchestras as well as a performing as a solo artist and in various ensembles. She is thrilled to be back to perform in the Promenade. Sarina plays a modern Australian instrument by Rainer Beilharz. The Returning Young Performers Showcase will be held at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, Brown Street (please note

change of venue from the Hamilton Uniting Church) as part of the Southern Grampians Promenade of Sacred Music on Saturday 20 April 2013 at 10.30am.Tickets are available at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, Brown Street or online at

experience. Paul, who has more than 20 years experience in business, saw an untapped market with adjustable beds and natural latex mattresses and hasn’t looked back, supplying custom designed beds right across Australia. While the adjustable bed market

has traditionally had a target demographic of the elderly, Paul says the tide is changing. “The majority of our clients are older but we are getting more and more young clients that just want to watch television comfortably in bed or things like that,” he said. “There is nothing else like what we do in Australia and after 14 years, we certainly feel confident in our ability to produce exactly what the customer needs.” The mattresses can include a massager and come in all shapes and sizes. The team at Town & Country can fit adjustables to existing beds, and massagers to existing mattresses as well. You can treat yourself everyday with the many massage options and the various elevations for your legs, feet and upper body. The remote control makes luxury effortless at the touch of a button. Doctors, chiropractors and occupational therapists are now recommending adjustable beds more

than ever to address a variety of ailments and to improve health and well-being. Our busy and stressful lives can often lead to neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain, and sleeplessness and an adjustable bed can certainly alleviate some of those issues. Suttontown Primary School has emerged from the Annual Small Schools Sports Day as champions - albeit by a narrow margin. Suttontown pipped Yahl at the post by only 14 points with Mil Lel sneaking into third narrowly ahead of Compton. Ideal weather conditions greeted the hundreds of children and their parents as they enjoyed the traditional march down Commercial Street from the Cave Gardens to Vansittart Park, before a day of novelty and athletic events at Blue Lake Sports Park. “It was just about getting through it together,” Port MacDonnell coach James McGregor said, referring to the club’s opening round clash against Kalangadoo less than a week after their premiership skipper Steven Noble was killed in an Easter road accident. “It was tough, but we have a fantastic group of blokes that stick together,” Mc Gregor said. “We knew what needed to be done - there was no hoo ha or carry on before the game, ‘Dexel’ (Noble) wasn’t the type to blow anything up to be something it wasn’t supposed to be and I just told the boys not to worry about game plans but to just go and out and enjoy themselves.” Both clubs, with players from A and B football, A grade netball and other officials and volunteers, lined the field in a guard of honour for a minute’s silence at the beginning of the game but aside from that brief tribute it was business as usual as the siren sounded. Like most round one encounters the opening five minutes was scrappy but the Demons soon exerted their authority and when

they found time and space, they started spotting up targets inside the forward fifty. Mal Lewis kicked the opening two goals of the game before Will Macdonald also scored and then it became the Dylan Bromley show as the key forward clunked everything in sight and finished with 12 majors. “I watched some of the pre-season cup and Kalangadoo were a much improved side and I thought it could have gone either way, but we picked up where we left off last season which was really pleasing,” McGregor said. The emotion of the week certainly caught up with the reigning premiers in the last quarter. “To be honest I thought it might have happened even earlier in the game than that,” McGregor said. Kalangadoo was the scene of the Demons’ 2012 grand final triumph, but the mood in a rooms after the round one victory, surrounding their former skipper’s guernsey was only sombre and reflective. In other matches, Hatherleigh destroyed Robe, Kongorong outlasted Mt Burr and Tantanoola won a nailbiter over Glencoe.

Almost 500 vehicles were tested last year in the annual three hour check up and after more than a decade, local Rotarians are continuing to host this critical community service. The 2013 vehicle safety check program is on Thursday, April 17, from 5.30-8.30pm at all participating locations. The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes instigated the program, which started as a free car headlight check, and it has now expanded to include Millicent, Bordertown, Naracoorte, Nhill and Kaniva with plans still in the works for further expansion into South West Victoria and even the Riverland. For a gold coin donation, car owners can have all their lights, windscreen wipers and tyres checked and adjusted, with all lights replaced at cost. Over the decade long program around 70 percent of vehicles have needed adjustments with 20 percent of vehicles needing at least one globe change. Around

MOTOR Road safety starts with a safe car in Millicent, 54 in Bordertown, 24 in Kaniva and 19 in Nhill. Barry Maney Ford is hosting the Mount Gambier check; Glendee Auto Repairs at 12 Williams Road is hosting Millicent’s vehicle check; Naracoorte Battery

30 percent of cars also recorded issues with their tyres. All three Mount Gambier Rotary Clubs are now on board, as well as the local clubs in Bordertown, Millicent and Naracoorte, while Warrnambool Rotarians will be checking out

the vehicle checks in Nhill and Kaniva, as part of the push to add locations such as Portland and Hamilton to the annual program. Mount Gambier saw 175 vehicles take advantage last year, with 112 vehicles in Naracoorte, 73

Service (cnr. Smith and Rolland Sts) is the venue in Naracoorte and the Farmers Centre (cnr Woolshed Street

and South Terrace) is hosting the Bordertown check. Kaniva and Nhill also have events again this year as well.

12th Annual HD & HR Holden Nationals – Car Show & CruiseMount GambierThis is the first time the event has been held outside the Eastern States and is a huge coup for local organisers. On Saturday there will be a show’n’shine at The Old Gaol with free entry to the public to check out these beautifully restored vehicles and to talk to the owners about what was involved and the history of the cars. Sunday will see the vehicles head to Penola for a cruise and will also set up on display in the winemaking town for another meet and greet. Email [email protected] for more details.
