ADVERTORIAL West Wimmera - markets, music & machinery From market days to youth art programs, from gospel cabarets to archery, the West Wimmera Shire continues to offer a diverse range of activities for locals and visitors alike. Fresh produce, arts and crafts and a range of handcrafted delights are all on offer at the April 7 Poolaijelo Market Day, the monthly Apsley Market (April 28; May 26; June 23) and the Edenhope Showgrounds Market on June 16. The highlight of the April program is Youth Art @ Charlegark, which will transform a picturesque lake into a hub of activity for the day, celebrating all forms of art in an exciting

interactive way. Exhibits will be displayed in the hall, a sound engineer has been booked for the singers and musicians and the walking track will be transformed into an adventure walk showcasing local sculpture. Food and market stalls will also be onsite making it a great day out for the entire family. “If you are aged between 12 and 25 and have an interest in singing, music, photography, dance, drawing, painting or any other art medium we encourage you to enter and take this opportunity to share your talents with the community,” Mayor Cr Bruce Meyer said. Kaniva, Goroke and

Edenhope College’s are working with West

Wimmera Shire to provide not only art but catering further showcasing the talents of the local youth. Workshops will also be held throughout the day providing young people the opportunity to enhance and refine their artistic skills or try a new form of art.

LINK Neighbourhood House is working with West Wimmera Shire to provide further artistic learning experiences for young people in the lead up to the event. This will begin with a four week photography workshop. Participants from the workshop will then exhibit their work at Youth Art @ Charlegrark. This is the first time a youth art event has been held in West Wimmera. The event will be run in conjunction with FReeZA, a youth development program providing young people with the opportunity to attend music and

cultural events. If you are interested in participating in the exhibition, running a market stall or participating in a workshop contact Amanda Munn on (03)5392 7700. The Rusty Rattlers Rally on May 19 is the perfect event for old machinery and engine buffs. With a horse drawn vehicle display, stationary engine demonstrations, tractors, trucks, car boot sales and a swap meet, the Rusty Rattlers Rally is held at Apsley Racecourse. There is also quilting displays and demonstrations and full catering on site. The other big event in May is the Stephen R Cheney Cabaret. The popular entertainer performs rock’n’roll, country, gospel and everything in between and boasts more than three decades experience on stage, and as a recording artist. He is bringing his international act, which has toured the United States and New Zealand, as well as right across Australia, to Goroke on May 25. If you need more information about

the West Wimmera and the events calendar check out www.westwimmera.vic.gov.auWhether your visit is for

relaxation, sightseeing or adventure, the West Wimmera is the perfect destination.

It offers, as close as possible, a “hands on” experience of life in the mid 1800s, when Victoria was still part of the colony of New South Wales. The show comprises of a night full of mystery, mayhem and fun, where our audience travels back 150 years in time to Harrow circa 1850. The cocktail pitchers and jars also add to the uniqueness of the Cider Garden Bar, offering seasonal cocktails to suit all tastes. Likewise, a broad range of ciders,

craft beers and spirits are available to suit all tastes. And the newly opened Cider Garden bar isn’t the only change at Mac’s Hotel - the bistro menu has had an overhaul and is focussing strongly on regionally sourced products. While in keeping with the family friendly approach of Mac’s Hotel, an indoor children’s playroom has been completed,

boasting PS3s and play equipment. It provides a safe and entertaining environment for the kids to play while the parents catch up and keep one eye on the observation window. Mac’s Hotel also has a specialised children’s menu. And it’s now easier than ever to keep up with what’s going on in Mac’s Cider Garden Bar through the hotel’s facebook page.

It was a case of “but wait there’s more” for MJ Dance Studio students at the end of last month. After securing the services of highly regarded choreographer, teacher and performer Michael Schwandt for a series of workshops across all age groups, the studio was then treated to So You Think You Can Dance choreographer and in-demand teacher Etienne Khoo for the

LOCAL The world’s best put local dancers through their paces just runs from school to school to school,” Maria said. “Here he gets to socialise and he has got to know the kids so well and watched them develop over the time he has worked with them.” Etienne Khoo, who has also been to Mount Gambier before as part of an association with Hype Dance, is now set to become an MJ regular as well, committing to a handful

following two days as the senior students worked overtime to make the most of his expertise to learn new moves and routines for upcoming performances at the Mayoress Family Fun Day and the MJ Dance Studio Annual Fashion Parade. The Michael Schwandt connection has been a fortunate one of the school - principal Maria Slape met the US based dancer before he

became an international phenomenon and Schwandt has included Mount Gambier on his annual Australian dance teaching tour for the past six years. Mount Gambier is one of only two regional centres that the US dance icon holds his workshops. “He really likes the Mount Gambier visit as it is more relaxing for him than the metropolitan workshops where he

of visits per year to develop the “urban” style of dance that he has made his own. “I do try and secure male teachers when I get the specialists in because my kids don’t get a lot of contact with male dancers and teachers,” Maria said. “I think it’s especially important for the male dancers at the studio because they need to see these role models - they have Euan (Doidge) and

Matt (Cram) but it is important to have as many role models as possible

and to be able to create networks with these teachers and dancers.” Having both high profile choreographers working with the students has created a new energy at the studio. “Visits like this just have the kids buzzing,” Maria said. “There is such an energy around the studio straight after workshops like this - having a new voice, having new ideas, learning new routines really energises the kids.” The Etienne Khoo workshops, in particular, were all

about developing more commercial work for the studio with Khoo focusing on commercial jazz and what many hip hop artists are now calling urban choreography. “I thought the senior kids working with Etienne really made some progress this time,” Maria said. “The more grunge style dance doesn’t always come naturally to them because of their technical training but Etienne really got the best out of them.” Khoo, who is a freelance teacher, was recommended by former MJ student Cristina d’Agostino, who had worked alongside him as Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance. Khoo also teaches extensively across Australia, including a long standing association with Tasmania, and overseas. He is also the head of a national championships hip hop crew and has choreographed a number of major events and productions. “Dance started as a form of exercise for me and I just grew to love it,” Khoo said. “I love working with kids like the MJ kids and seeing how much they develop even just in a two hour session.” Khoo said it was a different vibe when teaching students in a one-off situation rather than his regular students at metropolitan dance studios that are more accustomed to accessing that standard of teaching. “The regional kids are so enthusiastic and just listen to everything you say and really want to learn,” he said.

Above - Etienne Khoo puts five senior MJ Dance Studio students through their paces - the students are Cooper Terry, Sam Malseed, Katarina Gajic, Steph Nugent and Tiana Opie.

Nothing tests a relationship like renovating – it’s why so many viewers tune into reality series The Block, it’s as much for the fights, tantrums and tears, as it is the design tips. But John and Michelle Discianni decided to take the plunge and transform a 1930s house into their 21st century dream home. “We always wanted an older home,” Michelle said. “Although neither of us had even done any sort of renovations.” And when they first looked at the Bay Road property

LOCAL Just as they dreamed it would be

it was love at first sight. “It was really bright and we just loved the feel of it as soon as we walked in,” Michelle said. “Of course there was the location as well.” The property had been on the market for a long time and ironically one of the key selling points for Michelle and John, could well have been a reason others let it pass. “It was a smaller block than most of the Bay Road properties but that was what we were looking for,” Michelle said. “We didn’t want a garden.” And when you see the couple’s rear entertaining deck and their

final vision for the area, you can’t question their judgement. The couple bought the Bay Road property in June 2010 but not much work was done before John was struck down with a heart attack. Thankfully he recovered well and by the end of the year, the Discianni renovation team was back on the job.

your starsPisces You are a person in demand this

week so brace yourself to be pulled in a few directions. Everyone loves feeling wanted but don’t spread yourself too thin and make sure you don’t become all work and no play.

Aries There’s definitely some tension

at work but you need to take charge and do things how you think it works best. Have the courage of your convictions. Taking a chance or two could really reap rewards.

TaurusYou are lacking in energy at the

moment as you seem caught in a rut - too much same old, same old in your life at the moment. Might be time for a dramatic career move and just act in instinct for once.

Gemini Beware the trap of over-indulgence

this week - it is possible to have too much of a good thing. The lifespan on a romance might have expired and it could be time to focus on a friend in need who has a big project on the horizon. It’s time to step up to the plate on this one.

Cancer Brace yourself - a household

project is about the blow the budget and this will cause some tension and moments of concern. It will mean thinking outside the square to come up with the extra cash but if anyone is up to being a creative earner- it’s you.

Leo It’s going to be all about ending up

behind the eight ball this week as car and/or technology issues really slow down your progress. You will feel like you’re barely treading water at times so just prepare yourself for lengthy waiting periods and accept it will be slow going.

Virgo You will feel under the pump this

week from a financial perspective and the need to settle a large bill will certainly put a dent in your disposable income. There won’t be the chance to indulge in luxury items this week unless it comes your way as a gift.

Libra It’s time to admit it - you are under

pressure at the moment and feeling the stress of the situation. You cannot keep going at this pace and it is affecting every aspect of your life. Take some time out just for you and if you clear your schedule a little you might just meet someone new.

Scorpio Work is really starting to build up at

the moment and you barely have a moment to draw breath. Might be time to enlist a colleague’s help so you can meet the project deadlines.

Sagittarius While you are a team player,

working as part of a team will cause no end of frustration this week. There will be some people who absolutely wear your nerves to the point of fraying and perhaps you’ll need to accept that nothing you do will satisfy them.

Capricorn Family time is suffering at

the moment due to the high demands of your career. But it is short term pain for long term gain so press on - those who love you will understand. Now is the time to shine at work.

Aquarius It’s never a good position to

be in - being the most experienced person in a role but not being paid accordingly. But that’s where you find yourself and if you don’t act by trying to negotiate a raise it might never happen.

LOCAL Technology and fitness collide

Staff and volunteers at Penola War Memorial Hospital are exploring new ways of encouraging aged care residents to be more active and have fun new experiences. The hospital recently received a grant from the Stand Like Stone Foundation to purchase a Nintendo Wii console and assorted games for use by residents in the Jarvis Wing. Country Health SA South East regional director Jayne Downs said interactive video games were increasingly being used in aged care settings and rehabilitation centres. “The low impact activity

provides residents with physical and mental challenges and stimulation,” she said. “A study of metropolitan stroke rehabilitation hospitals in Australia revealed that 61% had purchased a Nintendo Wii console to be used as part of rehabilitation programs.“The Wii sports games are currently being demonstrated and regular sessions have been organised for residents of the Jarvis Wing by the hospital’s volunteers.“The Wii is giving the residents a lot of laughs and several have said

they never thought they would ever be doing anything like this.“We are extremely grateful to receive this grant from the Stand Like Stone Foundation.”Ms Downs said the activities can be adapted to suit the physical and cognitive abilities of individuals. The bowling program has been found to be the most popular low impact activity in studies of Wii usage in aged care settings. The Stand Like Stone Foundation, established in 2004, is a community foundation that serves the Limestone Coast region.

Southern Grampians Shire Council would like to advise that it will be removing two trees from the Hamilton Botanic Gardens resulting in the closure of the gardens all this week until Saturday. The trees were identified for removal through an arborist assessment report that recommended that the two trees are in poor condition and should be removed from the gardens. The Hamilton Botanical Gardens are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. There are a number of significant trees planted in the Hamilton Botanic Gardens and consultation has occurred with Heritage Victoria in relation to the trees that are proposed to

LOCAL Gardens closed for tree removal trees for the benefit of future generations,” Coggins said. Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Albert Calvano said council was removing these identified trees for the safety of visitors to the Hamilton Botanical Gardens. “Council apologies for any inconvenience caused due to the closure of the Hamilton Botanical Gardens while the works are being completed, but encourages families to visit some of the other attractions in Hamilton including the new Lakes Edge Adventure Playground, the Sam Fitzpatrick Gardens where the statue of Ted Kenna has been erected or the

be removed and also in relation to what they will be replaced with.Management of the trees within a high profile public environment leaves little scope to retain trees with significant defects that have the potential for failure or the shedding of limbs that could affect areas occupied by the public.Seuqoiadendron giganteum and pinus ponderosa are the species to be removed. Any further maintenance or retrenchment pruning of these trees would not correct the issues in these trees and may increase the likelihood of limb failure. It is unfortunate that these works need to be undertaken during the school holidays but this is only time the arborist is available to complete the works and Council has been waiting for major events and the busy summer time in the gardens to be over. It is also important that the work is completed before the winter season.

The recommendations from the arborist assessment report were presented to the Friends of the Botanic Gardens recently and this group agrees that the work needs to be completed and it is important that ongoing vegetation assessments and recommended works are carried out to preserve this valuable asset. Friends of the Hamilton Botanic Gardens President Leigh Coggins said the group supported council’s decision to remove the trees that have been specified after thorough investigation and testing with an arborist. “We look forward to the planting of replacement

LOCAL Anaesthetist & doctor appointments boost health service Portland’s surgical capacity has received a significant boost with the successful recruitment of a new full-time anaesthetist. Dr David Comyn has been recruited from South Africa and started last week as PDH’s full-time anaesthetist. The good news continues with the appointment of a part-time anaesthetist

Dr Roger Skilton who will start on April 22 in a shared position with Western District Health Service at Hamilton. The appointments are the culmination of a long-running recruitment campaign to bring a permanent anaesthetist to Portland and will allow PDH to expand its surgical program and attract more specialists

to the hospital. Locum anaesthetists have been filling the void for several years. CEO Chris Giles said the appointments would improve the hospital’s capacity to carry out different types of surgery, including caesarean section and emergency after-hours cases. “The new anaesthetists will

bring additional skills and experience to the hospital emergency department and increase our capability to perform more and more varied surgery,” Ms Giles said. “We will have the capability to run two theatre sessions at the same time.” Ms Giles said the appointments would also help the hospital

to contain costs by not having to rely on locum anaesthetists. She added that the capacity to perform more varied surgery would benefit the local community and encourage more Portland district people to have their procedures performed close to home. Portland District Health’s medical expertise has also been

expanded with Dr Aruna Muthumala joining the hospital as a new full-time physician. Dr Muthumala joins PDH’s resident physicians Dr David Taylor and Dr Anatoli Sobtchouk and the numbers will be further boosted this week with the arrival of a new full-time hospital medical officer Dr Karishma Karki.

FEATURE Jam packed youth week program The Mount Gambier Public Library and Youth Advisory Group have come together to create Youth Week 2013 and LOUD in the Library over the coming school

holidays, as well as hosting the usual fun and creative activities the library holds in between each school term. The jam packed activities and events

begin on Saturday, April 6, and run right through until Friday, April 26. Youth Week 2013 officially runs from the April 6 to 19, catering for ages from 10 years and above, including some of the same concepts from last year, but all events are fresh, exciting and fun. The first week will kick off on April 6 with a Lyrical Workshop with Josh Lynagh, from Streamlyne, and Kane Stuckey, from 12-1pm, at the library, followed on the Sunday by a Silent Disco at Frew Park from 11am-3.30pm. A ‘silent disco’ has been a popular hit at large scale music festivals and is where the library’s new wireless headphones will be used by each individual to listen to what they desire. On Tuesday, April 9, at 11am-3.30pm there will

be a movie screening at the Oatmill Cinema for ‘The Croods,’ with tickets only $5. Thursday, April 11 will involve a Wii Mario Kart Challenge at Centro Mount Gambier from 4pm-8pm. On Sunday. April 14, there will be a scavenger hunt from 11am-12.30pm and this year the theme is ‘Be Active, Be Happy, Be You,’ so come in a creative and unique costume. Register and collect your pack from the library at 11am and all entries need to be returned by 12.30pm. Sunday will also be the day of the last Mount Gambier Library Markets so from 11am-2pm there will be a wide variety of stalls, home grown produce, a jumping castle and face painting for the kids and entertainment all day, live performers include Lizzie Coke, Anna Coke, Tom Wilson and Katie Slattery. Dead Poets Society will screen on April 15 from 11.30am-1pm at the Dress Circle, followed by live music from Tom Wilson at the library from 2pm-2.30pm and then artist Susie Clarke will be holding her Creative Doodling/Draw Manga class from 2.30pm-3.30pm, also at the library. And the movies continue on Tuesday with Edward Scissor Hands from 11.30am, followed by some more live music by Babycat down at the library from 2pm-2.30pm. Tuesday will also involve a photography workshop by Alicia O’Donnell from 2.30pm-3.30pm also at the library so bring your camera along to play with the settings to take some breathtaking photos.

FEATURE Plenty to keep the kids entertained these holidays

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS Youth Week & School Holiday Activities

The Mount Gambier Public Library will also be holding their usual school holiday activities this April school holidays for children five years and over who want to keep busy and creative while school’s out. During the first week of school holidays, sessions will be held at 10.30am and during the second week the sessions will

be held at 10.30am and then again at 2.30pm. All sessions cost $2 to cover the materials, with children bringing home all their creations. This year’s sessions include a rotation of new and old activities covering all areas of ages and abilities. There will be a LEGO competition, button beading, puppet making (only for Cave

Club Members) and paper collaging in the first week, and then paper making, play dough making, card and frame making and a Mexican fiesta all in the second week. First on the agenda is the LEGO competition where children can bring in a creation from home and they will be put in safe glass cabinets and kept

there on show for the school holidays. The inspiring designs will be judged according to their creativeness and uniqueness, so don’t follow the instructions as there are no rules. All participants will receive a LEGO show-bag for entering and there will be big prizes for the judging panel’s favourites. The designs will be separated into

age categories for the competition and this activity is sponsored by LEGO. Monday, April 15, will be the day for button beading at 10.30am, your child will be using buttons and wire to create button people, creatures or anything they can imagine. This is a new event this year, introduced because of the popularity

of buttons in craft lately the library will be guiding with the technical side and then encouraging the kids to follow their creative side to make what they desire. It’s all about the Cave Club on Wednesday with puppet making at 10.30am. This activity is exclusive to the schools and individuals of the Cave Club

program, a literacy program designed to encourage reading, learning and growth - anyone can join so contact the library if you are interested. Puppet making is a new event this year and by using a wide variety of materials the children can make whatever puppet they desire; sock puppets, cardboards and even puppets on a string. On Friday, the library will be holding a paper collaging session at 10.30am. Artist Susie Clark will be there to guide the children as they cut, tear and stick their way to a layered picture of their choice. The second week of school holidays will kick off on Monday, April 22, with a paper making workshop at 10.30am and 2.30pm. This is a new event hosted by an expert in paper making, while onTuesday the 23rd of April play dough making will be the focus of the morning and afternoon sessions. Children will watch how the ingredients come together to make their play dough and they will also get to choose what colour they would like and of course take home their product, keep it in a snap-lock bag and play with it again.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS Youth Week & School Holiday Activities

FEATURE Keeping the kids entertained from page 30 Wednesday will see two card making sessions - another Cave Club exclusive session, which will include a smorgasbord of craft materials and things you wouldn’t normally find at home that the children can collect up and make a card or a frame how you want to. With Mother’s Day coming up this would be a great opportunity to make something from the heart, personalised just for mum that could even include a photo of you. To conclude the school holiday program, the library will be holding a Mexican Fiesta on Friday, April 26, with two sessions at 10.30am and 2.30pm. The Mexican themed session, run by Kristi Leamey, will include a run down on Mexican tradition, games and cooking. There will be different work stations for each different dish and children will have to work together to make their meal and then come together at the end to share the food around for a Mexican party. The cooking will be adapted to be healthy but yummy while still keeping it simple and fun so that kids can go home and recreate their traditional Mexican specialties. The library is currently taking bookings for each session as there are limited places. Contact the library by ringing (08)8721 2540 or book online at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library

LOCAL Push for more indigenous health workers Two newly qualified Aboriginal nurses and one trainee cadet nurse at Mount Gambier are encouraging more Aboriginal students in the South East to consider careers in the region’s public health sector. Their call comes as Country Health SA (CHSA) prepares to hold an Aboriginal Nursing and Midwifery Careers Expo in Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and Millicent in June. Enrolled Nurse Bianca Wilson was appointed to a 12 month part-time contract at Mount Gambier Hospital in June 2012 after completing a Diploma of Enrolled Nursing Course. “You need to have a sense of self drive, take every opportunity in life and make the best of it. When you do, you can achieve anything,” she said. Registered Nurse Cathy Bulner, 47, said it was vital to attract more Aboriginal people into the health sector. “I completed a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 2011 as a mature aged student and then a Transitional Professional Program at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital,” Cathy said. “I want to highlight that whatever your aspirations in life, it

is never too late to pursue them.” Natalie Young is studying an Enrolled Nurse Cadetship three days a week and putting her skills into practice at Mount Gambier Hospital two days a week. “You need to have the willingness to drive yourself towards your goals and when things prevent you from doing this, get up and work even harder,” Natalie said. South East CHSA Aboriginal Health Worker Peter May said the expo was a collaboration between CHSA and the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (Pangula Mannamurna Inc), supported by the Department of Education and Children Services. “Aboriginal staff bring a diverse range of skills into the workforce and can be very rewarding for not only the employer but, the community in the longer term,’ he said.“We’re keen to promote the health sector to students to increase the Aboriginal nursing and midwifery workforce at our regional hospitals and community health sites along with the health related professions in the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. “The numbers are still

small but we’ve seen a slight improvement in terms of recruiting Aboriginal nurses and cadets in the South East.” The expo is held every two years and was attended by 41 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary students in 2011 compared with eight at the first Expo in 2009. It aims to help students make informed decisions about their careers and they can take part in interactive sessions on the various health sector professions. It will held Naracoorte on June 19, in Millicent on June 20 and Mount Gambier on June 21.

SCOUT FUNDRAISER

After a successful inaugural event last year, the 1st Mount Gambier Scout Group is hosting its second Party Plan & Home Based Business Expo this Saturday. Running from 10am-2.30pm, the expo will feature more than 25 business stalls at the scout hall in Margaret Street, Mount Gambier. Word of mouth, after the success of last year’s event, has seen the number of stallholders and demonstrators triple. Each stallholder and demonstrator make a donation to the Scout group, making the event a good fundraiser for the scouts. Entry is free for the public and there is tea, coffee, soft drrinks and a sausage sizzle on offer to help the group with its fundraising efforts. The participating businesses and demonstrators offer special discounts at the expo, making it a great opportunity for Mother’s Day gift shopping, or for the super organised, getting a start on their Christmas shopping. The organisers even had enquries from Adelaide stallholders for this year’s expo but have limited the places to local suppliers.

LOCAL Young returning performers confirmed The “Returning Young Performers Showcase” will be a feature of the 2013 Promenade of Sacred Music Program. The committee is excited to welcome home to Hamilton - Conrad Hamill and Sarina Walter who will perform as part of this year’s event. One of the main aims of the festival is to showcase the musical education on offer within the Southern Grampians and to encourage young talent into the annual program. Conrad and Sarina are evidence that the festival is meeting this objective. Both grew up and were educated in Hamilton and they are thrilled to return to the area and perform, demonstrating the significance of our local musical education program. Conrad Hamill completed secondary school at The Hamilton and Alexandra College in 2010 where he was school captain. He studied piano and cello and was awarded an Associated Diploma in Cello Performance and Grade 8 with honours and distinction in Piano in

2008. Conrad completed his Unit 3/4 VCE solo performance in 2009 achieving 153/154 in the performance component of his studies resulting in an invitation to perform in the VCE Season of Excellence at the Melbourne Recital Hall in early 2010. He took a step back from music in Year 12 with an aim to focus on his Year 12 studies. Conrad was accepted into the combined degree of Advanced Science/Medicine/Surgery at the University of Sydney in 2011 residing on campus under both a cultural and academic scholarship. While music was not part of his course, Conrad competed competitively in university competitions resulting in the award of Most Outstanding Instrumental Performer in both 2011 and 2012 at his residential college. He was also the principal cellist of the Intercollegiate Symphony Orchestra and Associate Principal of the University of Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Music Performance

remained his strong passion and this year he transferred to a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under the instruction of world renowned cello pedagogue Georg Pedersen. Conrad is thrilled to transfer to full time music studies while continuing to play on the exquisite cello hand-made by local Bob Henderson OAM. The Western District’s Sarina Walter is the other returning performer and we will take a look at her impressive resume in next week’s edition. The “Returning Young Performers Showcase” will be held at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, Brown Street (please note change of venue from the Hamilton Uniting Church) as part of the Southern Grampians Promenade of Sacred Music on Saturday. April 20. at 10.30am. Tickets are available at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, Brown Street or online at www.hamiltonpac.com.au

KARATE Specialist training squad established

Ten Mount Gambier based karate students have been given a unique opportunity to hone their skills as part of a pilot elite development squad

program. The Mount Gambier students are working under the tutelage of Alba Kraatz at the Seishikan School. Some Ballarat based students are also part of

the pilot program that Seishikan Australia is looking to roll out across Australia in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Western Australian dojos. Initially, 45

students were identified as potential squad members before the Seishikan National

Elite Development Squad was whittled down to the 10 Mount Gambier students and four Ballarat students. While there is the obvious focus on skill development for these students, who have already garnered significant State and national success, there is also a strong focus on personal development. “It’s not just about karate but about self development,” Alba said. “It’s about respecting others, learning responsibility and teaching the importance of commitment and hard work.” Phillip Penafiel is the captain of the elite development squad, which also includes Chelsea Frost, Lauren Frost, Bradley Frost, Leigh Redford, Galen Aguinaldo, Mitchell Potter, Angel Aguinaldo, Leigh Davis and Angus McLean. And the squad’s first major championships since forming brought

great results - five gold medals, which equate to five national champions, two silver medals and four bronze. In a coup for the Seishikan program, the elite development squad won every kata title on offer at the March championships. Fourteen year old Phillip won gold in the under 18 kata; nine year old Chelsea beat older sister Lauren for the first time to gain gold in the kata, in an event where Angel made it a clean sweep for Mount Gambier by taking the bronze. Lauren picked

James secured bronze in his pet event, the under 16 boys high jump, while Casey was part of the bronze medal winning 4 x 100m under 18 girls relay. James also competed in the long jump, while Casey competed in the under 20 and 17 triple jump, high jump, 100m and long jump. Olivia had top 10 finishes in the high jump and long jump, while Brooke Hines competed in the 1500m and finished sixth and also ran in the 800m.

up a gold in the junior primary kumite while Leigh Redford won gold in the primary grade boys kata. The gold and silver medalists from that event have qualified for the All Japan Goju Karate Championship in Japan later this year, which sees competitors from many countries competing. The international standard event will be a huge test for the students that decide to take their karate to the next level. The squad’s next major event is the Australian Open in Sydney later

this month. And the students will be learning the time honoured art of fundraising as well so that the financial pressure is taken off participating families, especially for the overseas trips. The Mount Gambier Seishikan School still caters for karate students of all ages and abilities and currently has 45 junior students and 25 senior. Classes for both age groups are held on Mondays and Wednesdays. There is also a special beginners class held once a month.

SOCCER Blue Lake on track for strong 2013 season

New faces and return of some familiar ones has Blue Lake Soccer Club officials optimistic about the 2013 Western Border Soccer Association season. The club saw vast improvement in its senior side in 2012 and is hopeful that will continue into 2013 as they look to not just shape the premiership race but to be a genuine contender. Club stalwarts Tristan Guess, Andy Armandi and Josh Grubb

continue to be the nucleus of a formidable team and they will be boosted by the return of former players Kieran Breabairn, Alex Domaschenz and Jacob Phillips. There are also several juniors pushing their older team mates for senior selection with Sam Johnson, Nick Shultz, Josh Reimers and Blair Ferguson all looking to earn a taste of senior action in 2013. Lewis Ferguson is again at the helm and looking forward to added depth in his

senior squad for the 2013 season. Lewis is also taking on the under 17 team, which will be boosted by the promotion of many of the club’s premiership under 14 combination. Blue Lake’s under 14 team was the standout in 2012 for the blue and white strip - bringing home the premiership and the challenge cup. These kind of results come about thanks to a strong, committed junior program and coaches and Brian

Simmons taking charge of the under 9s and 12s in 2013. His ability to develop junior players at this level is remarkable and a lot of the credit for the results in the higher junior grades comes from his knack of getting the most out of his players. Kym Sykes, together with Simon Browning, will take charge of the under 14s, on what will be a new look squad with many of the championship team heading into under 17 ranks. The club is still looking for junior players for under 9s, 12s and 14s. So If any players are interested check out the Blue Lake website or the Blue Lake Facebook Page for information on training times or contact sports director Lewis Ferguson on 0439 819 066. The South Eastern Hotel, Mypod Podiatry, Armandi Transport, The Athletes Foot, Repco and Trevor Stephens Meats are again on board as club sponsors.

CRICKET Portland claims secondary schools title

Portland Secondary College completed back to back wins in the Western Region Secondary School Sports Cricket at the end of last month, demolishing a worthy Monivae College team on home soil. Both teams contained a fair contingent of Western Waves and local A Grade cricketers and the stakes were high as the right to be crowned Twenty 20 champions was up for grabs. Monivae began brightly with the wicket of Portland young gun and captain Hamish Withers for just eight, but then Jake Wilson (40) and James Elford (34) built an impressive partnership, shifting the advantage back to Portland. The introduction of Tom Feely brought about a middle order collapse and with four quick wickets the game saw Monivae back

in the ascendancy. Monivae skipper Jake Shannon leading from the front with three catches. Portland’s tail wagged though and in the end the reigning champions posted a competitive 139. Monivae was

never really in the hunt thanks to some clever spin bowling and clinical fielding. Nathan Jennings was the bowler who tore the heart out of Monivae’s middle order with a five wicket haul that saw Monivae collapse to be all out for a disappointing 44. Seven schools competed in the Twenty 20 competition with the challenge now on for next season to see which school can stop Portland Secondary College achieving a three-peat.

KARATE National success translates to international opportunity

Brad Fitzgerald, Samantha Freeman and Connor Prior, all students of Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier, have recently returned from competition at the Australian GoJu Championships held in

Brisbane with results which have qualified them for entry into a major Japanese event. Many high grade Japanese officials made the trip to Australia to officiate at the Australian event and to conduct seminars

whilst in Australia. Brad, a 17 year old from Casterton, and standing at the imposing height of more than 180cm, gained two gold medallions at this most prestigious event, again earning him for eligibility as a member of the Australian team to contend the World Go-Ju Championships, in Wakayama, Japan. Brad travels up to two nights a week from Casterton train and joins a growing list of Mount Gambier Shingokan Karate students who have attained State and National level success. Samantha and Connor were both first timers at this GoJu International event, each gaining a gold and a silver. In the senior men’s divisions, Geoff Rohde received two bronze medals (kata and

kumite) and Bill Smith also picked up two bronze medals (kumite). Amber and Suzie Smith also performed well in their first ever competition. The Japanese Karate Federation GoJu Kai event will be held in late July with only two students from each age and event category from each country in the world attending. Brad, Samantha and Connor will be accompanied by their instructor, Geoff Rohde, along with various family members. “We plan to first train in Okayama with Shinji Fushimi, 8th Dan, the World Head of Shingokan Karate, and then travel down to Wakayama for the big event,” Geoff said. This will be the school’s second involvement with international competition

after Brad successfully qualified last year, attending this competition in Tokyo. Last year’s planned championships were to be held in Sendai, Japan but were cancelled after the devastating earthquakes and subsequent flooding. Last year Brad approached many local businesses to enlist their support and ultimately received more than $4000 to assist with costs. The school is again hoping to fundraise and look forward to significant community support to assist all three families with their costs. Shingokan Karate Mount Gambier is a member of the Japanese Karate Federation, the Australian Karate Federation and the National All Styles, so all of our

members have a diverse range of training and competition options. Interested newcomers are welcome with juniors training from 5-6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday and seniors from 6-7.30pm on the same days at the 27 Percy Street complex conveniently located next to Swim School. For more information please visit www.shingokankarate.com.au or phone (08)8726 8199 to enrol.
