School’s out, and let the holidays begin! For some anyway, as at the time of going to print I am due to give birth in 4 weeks so I have just come back from a lovely 2 weeks chilling on Nissi beach. If you are heading on your holidays we have put together an essential guide to packing everything you need to getaway in style. Also to whet your appetite are our celebrity stacked interviews with Jessie J, TOWIE’s Kirk Norcross, Shameless actress Karen Bryson and legendary Bruce Forsyth who needs no introduction. I have had the pleasure of sharing a coffee with him at the canteen at Yorkshire TV studios where I was working at the time and he was making The Price is Right. A consummate professional, he talked to everyone, from the crew to the stars and he made everyone feel welcome and was full of warmth. Whether it is celebrity gossip, music reviews or news from what is happening in and around our region, Lifestyle magazine is your number one choice. We are the most well read lifestyle magazine for the region. This month we report on Liverpool Fashion Week 2013 which kicks off with its three month media campaign. We expect to be bigger and better than ever with its location at the 5 star Liver Building.

POETRY CORNER

This is a poem my daughter Honey, 11, wrote. To celebrate our children's talent and boost their confidence, we are making this a regular feature so if you would like to see your children's work published email [email protected] with a recent picture. I looked in the mirror, what could I see?I saw my reflection staring back at me,Whatever I did, she did the same, but to myself I cannot blame,I moved to the left, I moved to the right,She did the same, it was the light,Because light travels in one straight line,I must admit, I do look fine,I looked in the mirror, what could I see?I saw my reflection staring back at me.By Honey Blackmoss

LIVERPOOL RANKED FIFTH HAPPIEST HOT SPOTBut… a third of Liverpudlians never feel good about themselves

Britain may have this week emerged as the tenth happiest country in the world, but Liverpool has been identified as the UK’s fifth happiest city, with a quarter of Liverpudlians claiming they feel good every single day of the week. Although it’s the men rather than the women who feel just fine, with two-fifths of the men sporting the feel good factor compared to a low tenth of all women.

Delving into what makes the UK tick, the study, commissioned by Transform Cosmetic Surgery Group, revealed that we’re a nation of do gooders, with a substantial 61% of Brits stating doing good deeds for others is what makes them feel good. Liverpool topped this, with 65.4% getting that warm glow from doing good deeds for others. There’s much to be said for the northern charm.

He took time out of his busy schedule to visit children’s charity Brainwave North West Centre causing great excitement among staff and families as he toured the North West Centre which helps families with children who have Development Delay, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Downs syndrome. Steven met two of the Brainwave families, both from Warrington that he is sponsoring through the charity’s Guardian Scheme.

Brainwave works with families to deliver individual, home-based therapy and exercises for children with disabilities and Development Delay to help them reach their full potential. This can be anything from walking to feeding themselves. By working with parents, giving them relevant therapy equipment and teaching them correct handling skills, they are empowered to actively participate in their child’s development.

Brainwave has three Centres including the North West Centre in Birchwood and two further Centres in Bridgwater. Places on the Programme are available for children at all three Centres. For more information see www.brainwave.org.uk email: [email protected] or phone: 01278 429089.

To promote this new game a ‘real-life’ image of the Albert Dock has been created to demonstrate the destruction that could happen to the landmark if humanity was to be struck by the devastating Cordyceps virus, the virus that the games is based around.

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience blending survival and action elements to tell a character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague. Twenty years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, cities are abandoned and being reclaimed by nature, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons, whatever they can get their hands on.

HI JESSIE, I’VE HEARD THAT YOU’RE GOING TO BE HEADLINING RADIO CITY LIVE GIG?Yes I am, although the word “Headline” is really scary, but exciting!

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? I HEAR IT’S GOING TO BE AN EXTENDED SHOW?It’s going to be a new version of the songs and some stuff from the new album. Well I say from the album but it’s not finished production wise yet, and people don’t realise that they won’t send it out till it’s been finished and ticked and sent to my band for them to learn too. I’m just really excited about singing live, singing live! Live vocals are so hard but I put so much effort in to it, well we all do, my band is just amazing!

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM?It’s very exciting, the first single was put on itunes before it went to radio so the fans got a chance to get their hands on it before anyone else. Which is so important to me and I’m really pleased that my label supported that decision. I’m enjoying the ride, it’s second time round and I’ve done it once before and It did alright so I am defiantly making sure the standards are kept high!

YOU STRIKE ME AS A PERFECTIONIST, HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO FIND THE TIME TO RECORD AN ALBUM AS WELL AS EVERYTHING ELSE YOU DO, INCLUDING THE VOICE?Erm, because I want to. I really want to! I mean, it’s so weird to me because when I’m in the process of writing the album, everyone is shouting, “we want the album, we want the album”, but then as soon as I want to put it out they say “you need a break” argghh so frustrating! So then I’m like come on make your mind up! But I’m ready to go now, I have my first single out and I’m already preparing the second one. So yeah, I’m enjoying every second of it!

THE VOICE IS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER EVERY YEAR, DO YOU FIND IT HARD NOT TO GET EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED WITH THEM ALL?Well yeah, obviously, we’re normal and they are normal, and we are all kind of on the same journey we’re just all on the different places on that journey. So it is kind of difficult to get emotionally attached to the people they have real feelings and some of them let you in. But I’m just trying to give them great advice. I’m trying to tell them all the stuff that I didn’t get told!

JESSIE JJessie J, she’s beautiful, talented and shaves her head for chartiy! Does this girl ever stop? She’s currently a coach on BBC’s the Voice, she’s putting together her second album and she’s just been announced as a headline act at the Radio City Live gig on Saturday 27th July 2013 at the Echo Arena!

for more information on the Radio City Live and to buy tickets visit

www.radiocity.co.uk/radio-city-live/summer-2012-tickets

DO YOU STAY IN TOUCH WITH THEM AFTER THE SHOW, DO YOU STAY INVOLVED IN THEIR CAREER?I’ve always said to them that at the end of the day the reason that this show is great and what makes it great is that all the four coaches are successful coaches and working coaches. So this means that when the show ends we can’t hold your hand and we can’t be there for you because it’s not realistic. I tell them that they have to learn this stuff for themselves. So when it’s in my diary I am there and I am dedicated, my phone is turned off. I am there for 12 hours, singing with them and I am focused on them, I am 100% theirs. But when I am not there, I have a career of my own, and that is an inspiration to them as well as me being there for them. I will go to their concerts when I can but no, I definitely am not there to always hold their hand.

Celebrity Interview

Lifestyle Monthly 11

Page 12: Lifestyle Monthly July 2013

National Coordinator of the Anti-Bullying Alliance, Lauren Seager-Smith, said: ‘Now is the time for children and

young people to take the lead in

getting rid of cyber bullying for good

– to work together to create a future

where the internet is a positive place to

be – to stand together in cyberspace

and send a message loud and clear

that bullying is not acceptable.’

This year ABA have joined forces with Random House Children’s Publishers UK (RHCP) and two of their brilliant young authors to raise awareness of the issue of cyber-bullying though a prestigious and inspirational writing competition for children and young people in schools or colleges across England. The competition aims to encourage young people to get involved with the campaign throughout the summer months for the build up to Anti-Bullying Week. The competition boasts two age categories, each to be judged by an expert children’s author:

The 8 – 12 years group will be • judged by young, talented writer/illustrator of Darcy Burdock, Laura Dockrill. A graduate of the Brits School of Performing Arts, Laura has been dubbed one of The Times ‘top ten literary talents’ and named in the ‘top twenty hot faces to watch’ by ELLE magazine. The 13 - 18 years will have their • work appraised by incredible new author John Lucas, author of gritty novel Turf, a ‘powerful and unsettling’ (Telegraph.co.uk) read which was received with a swathe of glowing national reviews including the Financial Times who proclaimed it ‘a terrific debut’

John Lucas said: “Bullies are basically

unhappy. If they weren't they wouldn't

feel the need to make other people’s

lives miserable. That’s a fact. One

aspect of writing that I've always loved is the opportunity to take life experiences

– good or bad – and turn them into something positive by the very act of writing

about them. If you’re being bullied, social media gives you the chance to tell

people what’s happening in ways that never used to be possible. Write about your

experiences, share your experiences. Bullies thrive on fear and control – take them

away and they’re powerless. You’ll actually be doing them a favour in the long

run too. Although, maybe don’t expect a thank you.”

Entrants will be required to write a short story, blog, news article or poem of no more than 500 words, that describes their vision of a world where young people have taken control of cyberspace – and eliminating bullying for good.

The best entries will be shared through the RHCP social networking sites and the ABA blog, websites and social networking sites. The successful applicant in each age category will win the opportunity to personally select their own collection of RHCP titles whilst a further fifty books will be awarded to their school or college. In addition, the winner will receive a visit to their school or college by Laura Dockrill (8-12 years category) and John Lucas (13-18 years category) who will present the prizes to the winner of each category.

THE THEME IS: THE FUTURE IS OURS: SAFE, FUN AND CONNECTED.

The Anti-Bullying Alliance launches official theme of Anti-Bullying Week 2013 and announces writing competition collaboration with children’s authors to stamp out cyber bullying.

Entries should be sent in via the ABA websitewww.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week/competition.aspx

Sometimes you can come up with plenty of reasons why it is not the right time to quit cigarettes. But there are also plenty of reasons why you should go the extra mile and stop smoking. Here are just some of them…

1) Stubbing out cigarettes means smoking-related symptoms such as shortness of breath won’t stop you from keeping up with the kids or the grandkids.

2) By stopping smoking you will also be going the extra mile for those around you because they won’t be inhaling the secondhand smoke from your cigarettes.

3) After three months, sporting activity, such as running, will be easier because your circulation has improved. That marathon could be within your sights for next year.

4) Your immune system will thank you because carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke won’t be a problem and the increase in oxygen means you’ll be less tired and less likely to have headaches.

5) By cutting out 20 cigarettes from your day, you will find you have extra time on your hands instead. Plus, you’ll be saving around £200 a month as well as saving your health in the process.

KIRK NORCROSS – My StoryKirk is one of the original cast members of The Only Way is Essex, he is often portrayed as the good-looking rich kid, splashing out thousands on bottles of champagne and dating glamorous women. But there's a lot more to Kirk, in his book, “My Story” he opens up for the first time about the two sides of his Essex life, he

also tells us about his rise to fame on TOWIE, his much-followed romances, and who his real friends are! I caught up with him at his book signing in Liverpool One

Hi Kirk, can you tell me what the book is about?Well I don’t really want to use a cliché, but it really is a rags to riches book. I don’t think people really know what my life has been like, they’ve only seen me on TOWIE wearing expensive designer watches and living in a big house – but it wasn’t always like that for me!

What made you put pen to paper?I’m doing this to tell the world my story in its true form, and to give the opportunity for people to judge me from the truth, not from what people think the truth is.

What revelations can your reader expect?Well everyone likes to focus on all the women that I’ve slept with, and yeah I have been with a lot of girls, but the book isn’t just about that. Readers can expect revelations about the real me away from TOWIE, what I’m really like and what I’ve done. I wanted to put my whole life into a story and sell it so people can read about the real me. I’m a down to earth kind of guy and I’m really grateful I’ve been given his opportunity to tell my story.

What sort of reaction are you expecting?I’m really open in the book and I think it’s quite an inspirational. It’s amazing the reaction I’ve had so far. A young girl aged 11 who suffers from anxiety and depression tweeted me a few weeks ago to show her support which really blew me away, the support has been great.

I’ve heard it’s a little racy in partsThere’s quite a lot of sex in the book, which can be quite shocking I suppose, but I think sex is so open and public now I felt comfortable talking about it. At one time people would be shocked to hear that I’ve had sex in a lift…but now I think it’s what people expect!I think people will be most shocked at the conditions I lived in when I was younger. I lived in a one room hotel/hostel with my Mum and brother and shared a bunk bed, and all used the one and only bathroom for the whole of the hotel, so it was pretty tough. I didn’t receive any support or help for my anxiety either, probably because I didn’t tell anyone about it, I didn’t know what it was, I thought I was just a weird kid, so yeah, it was a rough time for me.

Why did you write the book and is it dedicated to anybody? The book is dedicated to anyone who has ever struggled and lived through tough times or anyone who is struggling at the moment - to show you that if you try your best to make things better, you can succeed.

What are you most looking forward to with the signing tour?I’m really looking forward to meeting my fans, spending time with them and getting to know them. I don’t want it to be rushed, I want to be able to speak to them all and thank them individually for buying my book.

Have you ever been to Liverpool before?I love, love, love Liverpool! I think in some ways it’s quite similar to Essex with the night life and fashion. I love the accent and I love the girls!

Page 17: Lifestyle Monthly July 2013

Hi Maria, you must be really busy running such a popular bar and party venue in the middle of town, what is your typical day like? And what time does it start?A typical day is a long one and it usually starts at 10:00am! From the minute I get in it’s busy busy busy! Firstly I check and reply to any emails or answer machine messages – of which there are many - from the night before. I then have a check on what parties we have coming up and any themed preparations that need to be sorted and organised for the weekend. Oh and not forgetting I am also dealing with enquiries that come in throughout the day by telephone or appointments! So yes it is busy, but we really enjoy working hard making every single event or party that is held here is successful, and our customers are happy.

OSQA is a very popular party venue, is it just the big parties that you deal with? Or can somebody book you for more intimate smaller do's?Oh no, we deal with many different size occasions. We regularly have various types of party's as big as 250 people at a wedding to 30 people for a Hen/Stag party as we have 3 separate function rooms. Hen and Stag parties are particularly great here, we cater for the start of the night where the whole family - not just the young people - can get together, then at midnight, the younger part of the group can go off by themselves and party to the small hours!

Can you offer help and advice on how to decorate for a party to get the best look?Yes, as we put on so many parties here we can offer all sorts of advice and inspiration for décor – if that’s what the client wants. We offer things like LED dance floor, up lighters, chocolate fountain, casino tables, magician, red carpet, paparazzi, stilt walkers, petting zoos, even live reindeer's at our Christmas parties, depending on what theme the customer is going for we have something for all!

A wedding reception and a hen do requires very different looks to a venue; do you decorate to change the mood? For a wedding reception or a hen party we would have things like a red carpet, a champagne fountain, candelabras, or even ostrich feather table decorations! Some parties are themed, for example a "Greece" themed party would have waiters wearing roller boots serving American style fries and hot dogs. Recently we had a Las Vegas themed 30th birthday party, so we put in casino roulette tables! And at a circus themed party we had stilt walkers and fire eaters meeting and greeting the guests!

As well as catering for celebration parties, we also cater for funerals; we understand that this is a very emotional time for everyone involved. Here we take time to really try and get to know the character of their loved one. From there we guide the family into making a sad time more of a celebration of a life, i.e. we can provide favourite back ground music or a singer if they prefer.

Lifestyle chats to Maria MurrayPlanning a party in the future? Wedding reception, christening, bar mitzvah? There really is only one place in Liverpool that can cater for your every whim and desire, and that’s OSQA! Whatever the event, OSQA can offer 3 individual spaces, all available for exclusive hire 7 days a week! I had a chat to Maria, the venue manager to quiz her about everything that OSQA offers, and what they can do for your special occasion.

My name is Kieron Bimpson and my three year old daughter little

Francesca was tragically and horrifically murdered in an Arson attack on our family home in December 2008 .This heinous and selfish act ruined our lives and was the attempted mass murder of our lovely family, by Graham Heaps who is now serving a minimum of 28 years in prison for the murder of my little daughter.

I have since went on with my twin brother Gerard and a group of trustees, to establish Francesca Bimpson Foundation a registered charity in England and Wales NUMBER 1140494 and build a huge Support and Resource centre in her honour and legacy in Huyton, Knowsley, Merseyside.

We have helped dozens of families rebuild their lives following the aftermath of a serious criminal act. This supercentre is to support other families by using our experience as a family, to work a way through the minefield that is victim support after the effects of serious crimes. Our services for mental health rehabilitation and day to day support include: Support and Rehabilitation with counselling and therapy sessions through our specially trained staff, advice, guidance and help with criminal injuries applications also support with child care in our onsite crèche and we are building a fitness suite for physical health Rehabilitation. The concert is to raise as much needed awareness for our charity as possible and to get the financial assistance to secure our services and resources for the benefit of all victims of serious crimes throughout Merseyside and the UK. BRITISH WOMEN

WASTE OVER £3K IN A LIFETIME ON

UNUSED PERFUMES

New research from the UK’s largest discount website has discovered that British women are likely to waste over £3,000 in their lifetime on unused

and unwanted perfumes. I am one of these people, I love perfume, what woman doesn’t right? I have a cornucopia of smelly goodness in beautiful polished bottles. But yes, there are those bottles at the back – perfume mostly endorsed by celebs - that will never see the light of day. But do I waste money on perfumes? Never! What woman buys her own perfume? Surly it’s akin to buying one’s own flowers?

The study, conducted by www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, surveyed 2,139 British women from across the country. When asked how many perfumes they currently owned, the majority, 73%, of respondents claimed to own between 1-5 perfumes. Just 8% of those taking part claimed that they owned more than 10 perfumes. Furthermore, when asked whether or not they currently used more than one perfume on a weekly basis, the majority, 48%, said they did; while 17% said it depended on personal plans. Over a third, 35% of Britons claimed that they used just one perfume at any given time.

With all answers taken into account, the study found that the average UK woman spends ‘£57’ on unused perfume/ scents each year.

When this is applied to the average adult lifetime* of a woman in the UK (64.5 years), the results show that the average woman therefore wastes £3,676.50 on used perfume in a lifetime.

Mark Pearson, Chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, had the following to say about the findings:

“With the amount of new perfumes flooding the perfume market, it comes as no surprise that many Britons have purchased beauty products that they do not use and eventually have to throw out. What surprised me was to find out just how much that impulse purchase adds up over time, with women spending over £3k on unused perfumes alone!”Impulse purchase? My whole wardrobe is full of impulse purchases, but that’s another feature for another month, so for now, spray away!

The Style Factory fashion workshop studio, with Caz Moss

For more information about the range of courses and workshops offered by The Style Factory visit www.thestylefactory.co.uk , email [email protected] or call 07794168817

Summer has finally arrived - or so we’re told - and I’ve been using it as

a great excuse to get stuck into some Summer crafting at the studio.

Shirring is my new favourite technique and it’s brilliant for making an easy sun dress or beach cover-up without any hassle of cutting out patterns.

You simply load the bobbin of your sewing machine with some shirring elastic and sew in straight lines using a loose tacking stitch. This makes any fabric nice and stretchy so it can be pulled on without the need for fiddly zips or button holes. The Style Factory are running a Make A Child’s Summer Dress one day course next month which explores this method a little bit more.

A must-have for any Summer wardrobe is a tie dye. It’s so easy and so much fun too. We’ve been playing around with lots of tie dye techniques at The Style Factory this month and the results have been fab...although we all have multicoloured hands after all the experimenting with dyes.

All you need for a bit of home tie dye is a packet of hand dye, some elastic bands and some imagination. Check out my guide to the perfect tie dye....

What You Will Need

1 packet of Hand Clothing Dye

1 packet of salt

Lots of elastic bands

Various stones, coins, buttons etc

Rubber gloves....very important!

How To Do DIY Tie Dye

Step 1: Choose the item of clothing that you want to tie dye. Use elastic bands to tie up the garment in any way you choose. The photo below shows a few different methods that work well...

Step 2: Follow the instructions on the packet of dye and make up the the dye in a bucket or wash basin.

Step3: Add the garmet to the dye and stir well.

Step 4: Remove from the dye after the time specified on the packet. Rinse well and then leave to dry.

Step 5: Remove elastic bands etc when dry and ‘hey presto’ you have created the perfect Summer festival look.

If you fancy having a go at dying and other Summer fashion techniques then why not join The Style Factory for our Summer Fashion Festival on Sunday 14th July. Tickets are just £40 per person for a full day of crafting and afternoon tea.

Once you’ve mastered tie dye then why not try dip dying too. It’s just as easy. Simply make up the dye and then dip one end of your jeans/shorts/tshirt/dress into the dye. Then use a stick or wooden spoon to hold it in place over the bucket while the dye works it’s magic.

TWW is a new charity that works with a myriad of

partner agencies to prevent women reoffending and to support all women including those who have not offended to be all that they can be.

As a result of the Corston Report (2007) it was determined Women’s Centres were best placed to deal with women who have offended and women who were on the periphery of crime. It is particularly important that these women integrate and normalise with women who have no experience of the Criminal Justice System. Women who have no experience of the criminal justice system make up a large percentage of the women who attend Tomorrow’s Women Wirral. They have full access to all the resources the centre has to offer in doing so there is an emergence of women supporting women. Women may suffer from mental illness, lack of confidence low selfesteem or just want to socialise. Mixing with each other and what the centre has to offer enables women to realise their potential. In partnership, women support each other in making positive choices to effect change in their lives enabling additional benefits to their families and the community.

Merseyside Probation Trust have been innovative in their approach to working with women and realised that as a service it needed to be working equally but differently with Wirral women to take into account how and why they are entering the criminal justice system

as a result of this Offender Managers are hosted at TWW along with all mainstream agencies and partners are given space to engage with their female clients.

TWW offers a female only, welcoming environment that enables all Wirral women equal opportunities and resources. All women over the age of 18 are welcome to engage with all agencies such as Public Health, Wirral DAAT, Wirral Met College, CWP NHS, Wirral CVS, RASA, Achieve North West, Remploy, APEX, Sure Start, Catholic Children’s Society, Zero Centre, Wirral Advocacy, Merseyside Fire and Rescue, Reader Organisation; in fact all resources available to women on the Wirral. Women attend courses such as Confidence Building, Domestic Violence Awareness, Recovery Group, Recycling, Managing a Budget, Mental Health Awareness, First Aid, Job Club, Creative Writing to name a few. We offer holistic therapies and exercise classes to assist with emotional wellbeing. We are open Monday to Friday 9.00 – 4.00pm starting the day with Breakfast Club sponsored by Kellogg’s and TESCO.

Our successes are many, certificates, qualifications, employment and even receiving the Wirral Globe Golden Globe Award for the Adult Learner of the Year, who attributed her success entirely to Tomorrow’s Women Wirral. We were delighted to win the Echo Environment Awards 20/20 Decade of Health and Wellbeing Communities

Ormskirk returns to it’s Vintage rootsAn exciting series of vintage inspired events is coming to one of the North West’s most historical market towns.

Nestled between

core cities, Manchester and Liverpool, sits Ormskirk a traditional market town lined with cobbled streets and ornate Victorian shopping arcades. This picturesque setting provides the perfect vintage backdrop to host handmade, artisan events that are being held across 4 Sundays over the summer, 26th May, 30th June, 28th July and August bank holiday.

Ormskirk Vintage Fairs will bring together over 40 stall holders selling a variety of high-quality goods such as true vintage, up-cycled products, paper craft, handmade items and artisan foods. The fairs will also host a series of live entertainment as well as performances from local bands and poets. Visitors will have the opportunity to join in free workshops such as lace making and crochet and watch demo’s by local calligrapher, Brian Whitmore. Bethany Jane Davies of The Vintage Beauty Parlour will also be setting up shop with her mobile 50’s hair salon and offering pin-up makeovers to vintage enthusiasts!

The first event on 26th May proved to be a fantastic event with the sun shining and the Vintage Voice, Francesca Georgeson delighting visitors with songs from bygone eras. In the town centre the activity tent facilitated by Faceless an arts organisation, provided good fun for all the family. Those on the search for something unique were not disappointed with over forty stalls of handmade and vintage treasurers to choose from.

A Charlie Chaplin lookalike delighted onlookers with his clownish antics. While a scrumptious vintage tea was served in the Chapel Gallery Café. The day was a great

success and the next is going to be even better, so make a date

Floral Designer Joseph Massie, 25, recently broke the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show records in winning his fifth consecutive gold medal in the RHS Chelsea Young Florist of the Year competition. Joseph Massie is the youngest designer to ever win five consecutive Chelsea gold medals at the world famous flower show. This latest Gold marks, not only, Massie's fifth Chelsea award but also his 10th national win.Joseph's fifth award winning appearance at the competition has coincided with the 100 year celebration of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Massie and the other competitors have created ‘An Eternal Ring' to represent the 100 year history of the prestigious flower show. Joe's design has been created using a contemporary, gold mirrored Perspex framework, which was chosen for its reflective qualities intended to reflect looking back upon the 100 year history of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The design featured exotic Vanda orchids, miniature oranges and a sensational selection of golden hued blooms. This was Joseph's final chance to compete in the Young Florist of the Year category and he is delighted to be bowing out with another gold. Massie said of the win"I am so unbelievably thankful and grateful for this fifth gold. It is more than I ever believed I would possibly achieve and I feel so humbled by everyone's support."Having dominated the competition world for five years, Massie is now focusing his attentions on the business world. Earlier this year Joseph founded Joseph MassieCreative, a unique design and life style brand with a focus on the innovative use of fresh flowers, plants and botanical materials. This followed a tenure in New York City as Artist in Residence with a world renowned Event Design Company. Joseph Massie Creative has already been commissioned to produce innovative and impressive designs for a range of campaigns and projects including Asda's 2013 Valentine's Day floral campaign.Having set the standards so high, Joseph has already experienced a golden era, the colour of his future is yet to be determined but looks set to be bright.Joseph Massie is one of the UK's most original, young floral designers. Eliza Doolittle returns with new single ‘BIG WHEN I WAS LITTLE’JULY 28TH.

Three years after breaking through with her self-titled debut album which entered the charts at #3 and sold over 500,000 copies, ELIZA DOOLITTLE makes her long-awaited return with the release of new single ‘BIG WHEN I WAS LITTLE’ on JULY 28TH through Parlophone Records.

As Eliza explains: “I was in the studio and I was rambling on about something saying 'that was big when I was little' and Steve goes 'that's a great song title!' So I wrote down some ideas and references and we wrote the song. It's the first song off of the new record and I can't wait for the whole album to be in your ears."

The single bundle also features a special solo piano version of ‘You & Me’ which is the current Top 10 single featuring Eliza by rising stars Disclosure. Eliza, who wrote the lyrics for the song, strips back the original’s garage sound to create an emotive torch song topped by a soulful vocal performance. The original version of ‘You & Me’ has proved to be a major airplay hit, garnering A list spots at Radio 1, 1Xtra, Capital and Kiss.

Eliza Doolittle’s renaissance continues with a return to the live arena this summer. Already confirmed to perform with Disclosure at both Glastonbury Festival and Field Day, she’s also set to announce her own headline shows soon.

Her Platinum-certified debut album featured the hit singles ‘Skinny Genes’ and ‘Pack Up’ which peaked at #5 during a chart run that lasted for over six months. Those two singles alone have sold in excess of 700,000 copies.

How did you get into DJing?I always wanted to be a DJ from a tiny age, always been into my music and once I'd settled into kiss a few years after being there I started to teach myself, practiced every single day for a loooong time and then plucked up the courage to get a set in a club and have never looked back since!

What are your favourite tunes right now?I also like Reload (Ingrosso) and Let's Go (Mobin Master)

You were the youngest female DJ in the UK - How did you break through?I think I'm still breaking through to be honest but just sticking with it, being persistent and literally working 22 hour days sometimes is now getting me in some of the places I dreamed of playing and DJing at. I still have a way to go before I tick off all of my ambitions and dreams but thank you for the compliment, I am pleased I'm seen as a break through artist. It's thanks to everyone who comes and watches me/supports and takes time to listen to my mixes and my own show on Saturday night Kiss 2-3am. I am massively grateful to all my fans for their constant support.

Where do you like to go clubbing?ANYWHERE there's a party, literally it could be the smallest bar or the biggest club, as long as there's good music and I'm around good people it'll be the best night!

How will you be spending your summer? This summer is just a dream come true for me, I have 7 gigs in Ibiza (all my dates are on www.charliehedges.com) including Space with Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim, Amnesia for Together and Es Paradise. I'm also playing Majorca Rocks and have just played in Marrakech which was amazing.

What has been your best gig to date?I honestly, as cheesy as it sounds, can't choose, there's a few clubs that I'd always dreamt of playing in such as Space Ibiza, playing at Global Gathering and Australia and Dubai that have been amazing but I've had some unreal times playing over in the UK, London and outside too, I try and make each gig just as good or if not better than the last

Do you have a beauty regime?Errrm 15 day semi-permanent mascaras, hair touched up once every 6 weeks and then apart from that my makeup stays with me permanently so that I don't get cut short if a last min gig or event comes in

What is your perfect holiday?Half clubbing and half chilling out and destination wise just somewhere hot is perfect!

What is your favourite drink?I don't really drink when I'm DJing/working but do like to keep a red bull on me at all times when I am so I'll go with that

Where do you like to shop? How long a section do I have here hehe, anywhere from Topshop/forever 21/Miss Selfridge to lipstick boutique online and the pokey hat

So DJing in Liverpool, how did you find the

crowd?LOVEEEEDDDDD it! It was my first time playing in Liverpool, Garlands was wicked, the crowd was lovely and up for it, they were crazy, crazy good obviously! I had the best time seriously!!

Karen Bryson is about to grace our screens as Avril Powell in Shameless for the last time. After 11 years the fabulous award winning show is coming to an end. But sloping off quietly just isn’t the style of Shameless, this last series promises to be as explosive and as unapologetically controversial as every other! I managed to catch up with Karen not long after filming her own the last scenes of the show.

What is it like to play one of the famous strong women of the Shameless cast?It was amazing to join the famous cast of strong women on the show; especially as I had watched the show since the beginning. It was always one of those programs I had wanted to be in because it was full of strong, unapologetic, female characters!! Receiving the scripts each week was a huge treat. Discovering what Avril would get up to next was terribly exciting. Whether it be on her own or with her family, I could always expect one of Avril's 'one liners'.

You must have been pleased to get the part of Avril, but was it also daunting to enter such a famous show, and you didn’t enter quietly either!I was over the moon when I got the part of Avril, it almost didn't seem real. Until the first day, just before my first ever scene as Avril, the butterflies kicked in, and I realised the enormity of being part of such a huge well-loved show. Looking back, I remember my inner voice saying to me 'Carpe diem' 'seize the day', the moment - just go for it! The rest, as they say, is history. Being part of a show like 'Shameless' you can’t afford to hold back!

The show is in its final series; do you think this is a good time

for it to end?Everything comes to an end. The fact that the show lasted 11 series, stands as testament to how popular and loved it is. A lot of the fans are gutted, but we're ending on a high. Nobody wants to be the last at a party!!

Your story lines as feisty Avril have always packed a punch, what will be your best memory of your character? There are so many amazing memories of playing Avril, almost too many to mention. One of the things I will never forget, ( more of a feeling) meaning, the feeling of pride. That I was lucky enough to work with some of the best actors, crew, writers directors, producers. On a ground breaking iconic comedy drama that never failed to push the envelope and drop jaws!!

I’m sorry I have to ask, are you anything like your Avril?I’m laughing out loud at that question. I don’t think I am, but my husband would beg to differ. Especially the feisty side of Avril!! Joking aside, there are definitely elements of Avril that are similar to me. Every character you play has a part of you running through it. Her love and protectiveness of her family, her sense of loyalty and value for friendship and community. I wish I could say I have the same hilarious one liners as Avril, alas, I don’t!

Now that ‘Shameless’ has ended, what is on the agenda for you now?I've just finished an episode of Casualty. My first, in the 27 years the show has been on TV. I really excited to see what's next for me, that's the crazy thing about being an actor; you never know what's around the corner!

Get your ladders out and start searching the long forgotten dusty corners of your loft for

some matchstick men with matchstick cats and dogs, because many Lowry oil paintings are still unaccounted for, they are worth a small fortune, get searching!Laurence Stephen Lowry, was born in Lancashire the late 19th Century. His paintings of North West England are instantly recognisable for the “matchstick men” in dark industrial settings. Although Lowry was world famous by the time of his death in 1976, the major art galleries had not embraced his works or given Lowry the respect that was due to him. Now 37 years after his death Tate Britain is finally giving their first solo

Lowry exhibition. To coinside with this, a £550,000 Lowry oil painting, a rare Manchester picture by Lowry’s art tutor Valette and works by over two dozen artists, influenced by

Lowry, are now on show at Clark Art’s latest exhibition in Cheshire. I managed to grab a few minutes with the very busy gallery owner, Bill Clark to ask him a few questions about the famous Lowry.

LOWRY EXHIBITION!

Even though Lowry is one of the most popular painters in Britain, why has it taken this long for the major art galleries to embrace his works? He’s been excluded from some British institutions such as the Tate because his work is considered ‘too popular’. In 1976 a memorial exhibition of his work broke all attendance records but this was the last time he’s been exhibited in a public gallery in London. This has a great deal to do with metropolitan British snobbery. His paintings are hugely popular with the general public but have been rejected by the elitist London art establishment. They couldn’t take an artist seriously who dealt with life in working class Britain. He recorded long-lost urban landscapes and the people who populated them. Thankfully this is all about to change as Tate Britain has embraced Lowry and are re-assessing his position within European art. This can only enhance his reputation and hopefully his work will be appreciated by a wider audience.

People still love his paintings, what do you think it is about them that still attracts such attention? His paintings are documents of a bygone age and they evoke a feeling of nostalgia. Lowry was the first artist to paint the industrial north and his style was unique. His paintings look simple but he was a master of composition. He is best known for his industrial landscapes populated with “matchstick men” and dogs but he also painted haunting seascapes, landscapes, figure paintings and enigmatic portraits.

Lowry paintings are huge investments. How much are his paintings going for?Three Lowry oils paintings have sold at auction in the last few years for £5.6 million. I am selling an original painting, The Coal Barge from 1938, for over £1 Million. A small figure oil painting is now £100,000+. A Lowry pencil drawing sold recently for a world record £211,000 at auction but small sketches start at £15,000. Lowry has been a blue chip investment over the past 10 years and in my opinion his prices are now set to rise even more rapidly.

Are all his works accounted for? Could somebody be lucky enough to find one in their

loft?New works by Lowry turn up all the time, he gave away hundreds of sketches during his lifetime and many people still find them in lofts or inherit them. Lowry oil paintings are also discovered by relatives, many have been locked away in safes or stored in the bank for decades.

For more details of the Lowry exhibition visit www.clark-art.co.ukLowry and his Legacy’ exhibition, runs until 13th July

HELP US SEND US ‘ERNIE’ HOME

Staff from Wirral Council kennels are appealing for help to reunite a puppy with its owner.

The dog was brought into the kennels by ambulance staff after its owner went into hospital after collapsing in the street while out walking the dog on Hind Street in Birkenhead on Monday 20th May, around 5pm.

The dog – which is a male, aged around 6 months – has been nicknamed ‘Ernie’ by the kennels staff and volunteers from the Friends of Birkenhead Council Kennels (FOBCK) group as they don’t know his real name.

Cllr Brian Kenny, Wirral Council’s Cabinet member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “Ernie is only young so being in kennels is not best for his welfare, so it’s important we try to reunite him with his owner or find him a more settled home soon – he has been at the kennels for three weeks already.

“The staff were given a phone number when the dog was brought in, but they’ve not been able to contact the man who collapsed and attempts by the police and ambulance service to trace him have also not been successful.

“So we are broadening out the appeal either for the owner himself to get in touch or for anyone who might know what happened to him to let us know so we can make plans to get Ernie back into more appropriate accommodation.”

If you have any information, you can contact the Council kennels on 0151 606 2003.

A new British Film is on the horizon! “The Fitzroy” is being released this Autumn. It’s a darkly comic feature film about the last hotel at the end of the world – oh and it’s set in a submarine!

I had a chat with the film’s writer and director - Andrew Harmer

HI ANDREW, THANK YOU FOR TAKING TIME AWAY FROM FILMING. CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THIS FILM?The Fitzroy is a black comedy set in a post apocalyptic 1950’s. The world is covered in a poisonous gas but the survivors try to continue on as best they can. Honestly, it is a comedy. It centres on The Fitzroy hotel - a rusting hunk of a submarine beached just off Margate. It’s the last place to have a traditional holiday. The film focuses on Bernard, the hapless, underappreciated, overworked bellboy. It’s his job to keep all the guests happy and the hotel afloat. His world (literally) starts to fall apart when he falls in love with a murderous guest.

IT’S AN UNUSUAL IDEA FOR A PREMISE FOR A FILM, WHERE ON EARTH DID YOU COME UP WITH IT?I’ve been trying to make a film for a while now and in the end I decided to write something I would want to see and enjoy. As a kid I grew up on sitcoms like Dad’s army, Hi-di-Hi!, Faulty Towers… what I loved about them was all these different characters who were forced to interact because of the situation they found themselves in. Having a film set in a confined submarine where you can’t go outside meant that I could throw all these different (and hopefully funny) characters together, see how

they reacted off each other and how they found a way to live together… or not.

ARE YOU ACTUALLY FILMING INSIDE THE SUBMARINE? OR IS IT IN A STUDIO SOMEWHERE? BECAUSE SHOOTING IN SUCH A SMALL SPACE CAN’T BE EASY?!We are filming on a real sub - a foxtrot class Russian submarine called the Black Widow. It’s terrifying but does give the film a real sense of authenticity and huge production values. It is a nightmare to shoot on. I’m 6ft 7” - I was definitely not designed for submarines. Needless to say, the crew and cast have all got to know each other rather well.We have had to recreate some of the submarine in a studio - specifically the bedrooms. The rooms on the sub are so small you wouldn’t be able to squeeze two actors in there, let alone a camera crew.

YOU HAVE A REALLY STRONG CAST OF WELL - KNOWN FACESYeah we’ve been blessed with an amazing cast, especially for such a low budget film. The nice thing is, there is a real breadth of age range in the characters, from some real seasoned pros like David Gant and Stuart McGugan to up-and-comers like Cerith Flinn. We then have comic

In an interview with Joy LewisTHE FITZROY FEATURE FILM

actors like Ken Collard, Jan Anderson and David Schaal who are at the top of their game.Everyone really bought something unique to their characters. It was fascinating to see them bouncing off each other, I think we’ve captured some amazing performances.

WHERE ARE YOU IN PRODUCTION AT THE MOMENT? WHEN DO YOU PLAN ON IT BEING RELEASED?We have a few more days of filming to pick up and then we jump straight into post production. We are hoping to have the film completed by the end of September and released before the end of the year. We have some interesting and hopefully unique plans for the distribution. People should sign up to our newsletter if they want to be the first to know what those plans are and for exclusive behind the scenes info www.thefitzroy.com (sorry for the plug, couldn’t resist).

“If it goes really well,” says the tireless telly legend, “it’ll last two-and-half hours.” And if it doesn’t? “About two,” he laughs.

If there’s a more energetic and enthusiastic octogenarian in the world of showbiz (or, indeed, anywhere), we’re yet to meet him.

Entertaining an audience for two hours-plus is a feat unmatched by comedians and entertainers half the north Londoner’s age.

But Sir Bruce’s love of light entertainment seems everlasting. He reminisces back to what he calls a golden age of television and variety shows; an age of pizzazz and gentle charm, with none of the “crudeness” he sees today.

“I don’t want to be an old man,” he says, before bemoaning a lack of spark on today’s television talent shows – Strictly Come Dancing aside.

He loves his place on the BBC’s flagship dance bastion, but even at his grand old age, a part-time gig is not enough for him.

His desire to get out on the road – he’s just finished a small UK tour and is lining up new dates – comes not only from a desire to keep healthy, keep active and keep happy, 20 years after most people retire, but because he misses being an all-singing, all-dancing showman.

“If someone said to me I couldn’t dance another step I think it’d kill me, I really do. I love entertaining, I love feeding off an audience and I love making people smile. It’s the best feeling in the world.”

After 70 years in the business, Bruce truly is a national treasure, and someone finally knighted for his services.

While he puts his longevity down to hard work, he insists he’s not a workaholic. He knows how to relax, he tells us.

“I wind down in Puerto Rico, and on the golf course. Although thinking about the latter, sometimes it’s impossible to relax… golf is such an infuriating game! If you’re playing well, it’s easy. If you’re playing badly, then the hyper tension that goes through your body is enormous!”

JOURNALIST: Anthony Pearce

“I sing, I dance, I play the piano. I’m what you’d call an all-round entertainer,” says Sir Bruce Forsyth, now in his 86th year, and promoting his new, one-man show.

Today he’s at his Surrey home, which indeed overlooks the Wentworth Golf Course. The famous West Course, built by Harry Colt in 1926, backs onto his house, with trees now obscuring the view of the first fairway. He used to play off an eight handicap. That it’s now a 14 is a source of eternal aggravation.

And Puerto Rico? Well, that’s the birthplace of his wife, Wilnelia Merced – or Lady Forsyth as she’s now entitled to be known. It’s the place he spends his winters.

“I came back to England to do a show with Miranda Hart (When Miranda Met Bruce) and we zipped through my 70 years in showbusiness – there wasn’t time to talk about it all!

We did some entertainment as well. It was a lot fun. Then I was going to go away again but didn’t, so I was

frozen in the cold, with the rest of you in this country!” he laughs.

“We’re just coming out into the sunlight, now… I hope?! It was a beautiful day yesterday,” he says. “I played golf and it was the perfect, perfect day. You do get those English days that are so good you don’t want to go anywhere else. And then the next day, you’re looking

up the flight plan to see if you can get out the country quick enough!

“But living here is perfection. I’ve been here for over 35 years, and the trees have grown

up so you can’t see the house from the fairway at all, which I’m actually pleased about.

“Peter Allis, on the television, is always saying how many golf balls I collect, which is a complete lie! I don’t do it every day… I go out Monday, Wednesday and Friday!” he says with a cackle.

You know when a Brucie punch line is coming, but it’s still enough to make you titter anyway.

There is, of course, always the rumour that he’s going to retire. He says ever since Strictly Come Dancing launched, the press has wondered if it’ll be his last.

Does it annoy him? “No. Not at all,” he says. “I find it funny. It’s nice to be speculated over but does it really matter? I’m just a presenter. And I’m back for this year’s show, of course. And I think it’s going to be a belter. We just can’t wait to get started.”

award winning international pr company

This month I thought I would give you all a little insight into how to get your press release noticed and used to its

full potential!

If you want your press release to be seen by your target audience, you need to know what they might be searching for. The web is a giant pool of information that is almost instantly sorted into relevant results when a person types in a keyword. If you optimise your press release for one of these keywords, your press releases may be one of the things that appear when a person does a search.

A press release written correctly is a piece content that allows you to blow your own horn and talk entirely about the great things happening within your company/products/services etc...Not only that, but a press release is one of the only types of promotional content that publishers/editors/freelancers are eager to read and publish on their sites and also Journalists and bloggers are are more likely to read.

Press releases are an ideal way to create many search results with positive information and that's because press releases are one of the only types of user generated content that allows you to use your company name or your name in the title.

When any of the major search engines look for key words, press releases just like blogs, Facebook, and other social networking platforms see their key words as authoritative, they respect press opinion just like they would respect millions of social networkers all having the same opinion , this in turn helps your business move up the search engine list.

This is just a small insight to the power of press!

Until next time,Donna

ROYAL BABYEvery New Born Baby is a little Prince or Princess!

The royal bump is the talk of the nation; Time magazine has already christened our future monarch “The Most Anticipated Child of All Time", but every mum feels that their impending son or daughter is the most anticipated baby of all time!

Are you currently expecting your own little prince or princess? Or do you know somebody that does? Love babies or not it’s difficult to escape them as Royal baby mania is sweeping the nation, Google is hot with searches on everything royal baby, and William Hill is giving odds on possible Royal names, even the colour of the hat the Queen will wear on her first visit to see the new monarch – I kid ye not!

Having a baby is a very special time in every mum’s life, yes you are very excited, you look at other mums and mums to be, with a wistful serene smile upon your face. And yes, finally you can have that extra piece of chocolate cake and instead of feeling guilty about it; everybody suggests that you

should even add cream! After all you are now eating for two!

But, what the baby books and baby magazines don’t prepare you for is the overload of “advice” you get whether you ask for it or not! This “advice” comes in all forms, well- meaning old women on the bus who tell you how bad it was in their day, to the women who haven’t even had babies themselves! All of a sudden, as soon as you start sporting the first sings of a bump, everybody is an expert and your bump is there to be shared with the world. So my feelings go out to Kate, as her bump is there for literally billions of people to comment and judge on!

My advice to all new mums – even to Kate Duchess of Cambridge- is to take it easy, slow down and enjoy every single second. And to anybody who is not pregnant but knows somebody who is, there is only one rule, NEVER EVER tell her she looks huge!

Some big names in business have become victims of the recession with high street brands such as HMV, Comet and Blockbuster calling in administrators.

Many small businesses are also struggling to survive and it is therefore vital that business owners look at how they can build a sustainable model that will stand the test of time.

Sustainable growth within the small business sector is seen to be crucial to the UK’s economic success and the government has recognised this in the support it is making available through the Funding for Lending scheme, Growth Accelerator, RGF rounds and the Start Up Loans programme.

These alternative sources of finance are vital to economic growth at a time when businesses are finding it difficult to get finance from banks and other traditional lending sources.

Locally, funding provider Merseyside Special Investment Fund (MSIF) manages alternative funding including the Start Up Loans Programme. It provides finance up to £2million to help start, develop and grow businesses across the Merseyside area. As well as finance, MSIF provides a range of follow-on support to help businesses thrive.

MSIF investment director Paul Humphray gave his advice on how to build a successful business: “Business owners need to focus on their customers, ensuring they remain aware of what their customers want and adapt their product or service to meet customer’s needs.

“Identify your competitive advantage and seek to maintain it and focus on core competencies within the business to improve the quality of the product or service offering.

“It is important to look at long term value rather than short term profits and innovate to adapt to changing market conditions.

“And finally, ensure that you build a strong team and don’t be afraid to seek an outside view or support via a mentor or NED.”

MSIF provides funding from £250 up to £2million+ and is available to businesses across most sectors.

The North West Fund is a £155m investment fund, established to provide debt and equity funding from £50,000 to £2m to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) based in, or relocating to, the North West of England.

We have already supported over 180 businesses with more than £55m of funding.

Do you need finance? We are looking for more businesses to invest in, so whether you are just starting up or seeking funding to help take your company to the next level, investment of between £50,000 and £2m from The North West Fund could be what you need to help your business flourish.

Contact any of our specialist Fund Managers or find more information on our website:

All of our Fund Managers are authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. We are unable to invest in retail businesses. Please check the website for a full break down of eligibility.

As one of the largest funds of its type in the UK, The North West Fund has been set up to create a legacy for businesses in the region.

The £155m investment fund is now almost two and half years old and has already built up a strong portfolio of growing businesses.

It is now widely recognised that the major banks in the UK have neither the appetite nor the resource to provide capital to businesses that fall outside of stricter credit appraisal guidelines. This has created a very substantial funding gap and made it much more difficult for businesses to raise much needed growth capital.

Against this background that The North West Fund has been able to step in and invest over £55 million in over 180 businesses and in doing so has been able to create and safeguard a significant number of jobs in the region as well. In Merseyside alone we have invested over £13million into more than 50 businesses.

The Fund supports small to medium sized businesses across the North West with investments of between £50,000 and £2 million. This finance is already helping businesses in Merseyside and the rest of the region, to meet their growth aspirations, whilst creating jobs and prosperity for the future.

CRAIG PHILLIPS DIY EXPERT

Hello Lifestyle Readers!

I hope my latest column finds you well. I have been working hard with a range of different brands and organisations on exciting projects and I couldn’t wait to share them with you.

The new season of Big Brother is in full swing and I appeared on Big Brother’s Bit on the Side to talk about the latest housemates and all the most exciting events from life in the house. It’s always great to take a trip to the Big Brother studios and relive my own experiences from the first series. The show has changed so much since I took part but I think it’s fascinating to see all of the different housemates living together and the challenges they face.

I have also appeared on Ideal World again with Wagner, another great opportunity to make sure that as many people as possible know about this great painting solutions brand. It really does guarantee professional results for a wide range of painting projects and I am always so pleased to work with the company to promote the benefits of their products.

Continuing my involvement with the work wear brand Blåkläder, I joined them for a new Yesss Electrical store opening in Christchurch. Their clothing really is at the cutting edge of work wear design and I make sure that I am always wearing Blåkläder when working on my own construction projects. The technology and design used is second to none and I am proud to wear the brand out and about. The store opening was a great success and I know that we introduced Blåkläder to even more construction professionals that will really benefit from wearing the high performance clothing.

I hope that you have had a chance to work on your own projects on the few days that the sun has been out. The summer is great time to start a DIY project and I hope that my tips below help you with something that you are working on. I look forward to updating you again soon!

All the best,Craig.

Fitting Wall TrellisFitting wall trellice’s isn’t as difficult as you may first think. It can give you an added dimension to your yard or garden. You can grow all sorts of flowers and plants including ivy, and even vegetables like sweet peas to add more colour to your property in spring and summer.

Standard trellice sheets come in six foot by six foot sizes and can be easily cut down to your required size using an 18V circular saw.

STAGE ONE Stabilise well on some work benches , clamp down and cut in a straight line, one baton at a time (not forgetting your safety specs).

STAGE TWO Hold trellice into the required position, drill some 6mm clearance holes on the upright length ,that’s closet to the wall. Swop your drill bit to a 6mm masonry drill piece, line the hole up to the brick wall and drill through your clearance hole into the wall.

STAGE THREE Apply a brown raw plug, slide your screw through your clearance hole on the wood. Change your drill bit to a screwdriver piece and drive the screw firmly through the wood tressle into the plug. Repeat this process on all four corners of the tressle and this should hold it firmly into place.

Top tip: Leave about 4 inches off the ground as this will stop any water puddles on the floor absorbing into it.

Top tip; when purchasing always buy tanelised timber for outdoors.

HOTEL CONVERSION BEGINS FOR CITY LANDMARKWORK is officially underway on an £18 million project, kick-started by the Council, to transform Liverpool’s historic Royal Insurance building into a stunning new hotel.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, visited the building recently to mark the start of the 15-month scheme, delivered by Ashall Property Ltd. It will rejuvenate

the Grade II* listed building, which has lain empty for 20 years, and had been placed on the National Buildings at Risk Register.

Now, the building is looking forward to a bright future, with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. on-board to bring their design-led Aloft brand to the building – a high-profile first for the city.

Liverpool City Council purchased the freehold of the historic landmark, at the corner of North John Street and Dale Street in the city centre, for £1.95 million earlier this year- facilitating £18m of private investment in a project being undertaken by Runcorn based developer Ashall Property.

The Mayor - who was joined by Mark Ashall, Director at Ashall and Colin Bennett, Area Manager UK & Ireland, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, to see the beginning of a new chapter for the famous building - said: “At a time of inertia in the economy, we are taking the bull by the horns and doing things differently. This deal with Ashall is another great example of how we are targeting our resources creatively to help kick-start development, and investing in assets that bring in new income streams for the Council.

“The Royal Insurance building has been empty for too long, and its rebirth is great news for our city, for our economy and for our hotel sector. We are protecting our past, as well as investing in our future.”

The latest figures show that Liverpool’s work to bring historic buildings back into use is having a real impact. Only four per cent of the city’s buildings are now on the at risk register, compared with a national average of around seven per cent.

PARTNER SOUGHT TO HELP DELIVER 2,500 HOMESThe Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, is giving housing developers an exciting opportunity to team-up with the City Council and help build the city’s future.

A search has been launched for an official housing partner for Liverpool, to deliver 1,500 new homes for local people, and bring a further 1,000 properties back into use.

The partnership will support the Mayor’s pledge to deliver thousands of new and refurbished homes over the next three years.

Mayor Joe Anderson said: “I promised to build 5,000 new homes in Liverpool by 2016. We’re already building 2,500 of them. We want everyone in Liverpool to have access to a decent home, and that’s why improving our housing stock is one of my top priorities. To achieve this, it’s vital that we work creatively with other organisations from the public and private sector.

“This partnership will help us build on the fantastic progress we are making in housing in this city, unlocking new investment opportunities, and allowing us to pool resources and expertise. This is about improving the lives of thousands of local people, so we are only looking for organisations with a real commitment to housing regeneration – and the track record to back it up.

“We want to see innovation and a market-led approach in build development and quality, to ensure the people of this city get the housing they deserve.”

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Ann O’Byrne, said: “We continue to make great strides in housing in this city, and this new partnership will help propel our work faster and further than ever before. It’s about working in collaboration with other organisations to deliver the housing the people of this city so desperately need.

As part of the partnership, organisations will be offered: • Multi-million pound development opportunities.• Access to council-owned land.• Speedy planning and legal service.• Flexibility to tell the Council where and when we should build and refurbish properties, citywide.• Market intelligence.• Tapping into the city’s ‘Liverpool in Work’ programme, providing an experienced and local labour force and a network of suppliers.

The partnership will run from 2014-2019. The council will consider an extension to the scheme for a further five years (2019-2024). This will also include economic development projects where it complements the housing delivered.

Through the partnership, the City Council will prioritise the creation and safeguarding of jobs for local people and will work with the partner organisation, through the city’s ‘Liverpool in Work’ programme, to ensure supply chain, labour and skills are sourced locally wherever possible.

The partnership would aim to build on the city’s housing growth in recent years, with work currently underway at 27 sites across the city.

Vintage collector and antiques dealer Sally Ayres talks about her life changing decision to start a life in Liverpool and establish herself as Merseyside's youngest female auctioneer.

Dancer Sally Ayres, 27, changed her life after a skiing accident dislocated her knee. She moved to Liverpool in 2007 to reinvent herself because "there was a good, solid music and entertainment core so thought it would be the best place to come and explore other areas of the industry"

She said, "It took me a while to find my niche in Liverpool. I went to LIPA to study music, theatre and entertainment management as I thought it would be a natural progression from dancer to teach then to manager but something wasn't sitting well with me. I missed teaching and couldn't quiet find an area of the arts I wanted to be hugely involved with. I tried my hand at music management but all those late night with the alcohol flowing trying to keep lead singers in check didn't suit me. Event management was good fun but I struggled to make a living and the thought of being involved in the dance industry again broke my heart. To say the least I was a little lost."

A visit to a vintage fair brought focus back to her, "The clothes were to die for and the style of some of the women took my breath away - this is what gets my creative juices flowing, this is where I need to be."

Having collected vintage clothing and antiques since I was a teenager this was the first time she thought about turning it into a career. Alongside selling at fairs she volunteered at Oxfam to sort through their clothing deliveries. A random email to an auction house offering them her expert knowledge in vintage clothing and textiles in return for teaching me the business paid off as she was offered a job with Cato Crane Auctioneers . she said, "Now I am up on the rostrum every week beckoning the bids in and slamming the down the gavel (that's the hammer) its just like being on stage expect I'm not using my legs! "

"I love both sides of my job, the buying and selling side and the auctioneering

side. Both have exciting elements but 1 element is a constant - the bargains that can be found! When it comes to clothing, it is easy to spot a good piece if you know what your looking for. "

SALLY'S TIPS FOR VINTAGE DRESS SHOPPING

• Feel the fabric - if its man made you know it's post 1953 as this is when poly fibres were invented

• Check the zip -if it is at back and is metal it's most probably late 1950s, if it is on the side it's most probably 1940s to early1950s and if the zip is nylon it's most definitely late 1960s into the 1970s and beyond.

• Be careful of vintage 'inspired' dresses they are NOT the originals also, as a very last tip dresses from the 1920s will be decorated with glass, wood or metal beads ... Never sequins because plastic was invented until 1953.

Sally has written a book called VINTAGE DARLING! and is in the process of self pulishing . "It is a collaborative project using creative and confident women in Liverpool, show casing their unique talents and how they are carving their way in the entertainment Industry which is alive and kicking in our wonderful city. Each of them wearing my clothes and using my antiques as props with photographer Mina Bihi behind the lens."

She aded, "For me, this book is a way of working along side the industry that I love most, the arts and although I am not directly involved in entertainment anymore this is a way for me to keep that connection that I have been missing for years, by given people a platform to self promote within my book.

Doing this book has taught me that there are so many people out there doing exactly what I am doing day in day out. Working hard at the 1 thing that love and enjoy most and with a little enthusiasm anyone can do

anything. 1 year ago when I started on this new path I would never have I thought that at this point I would already be a well established name in the vintage circuit, be Merseyside's only female auctioneer and be just about the release my first book - I. Am excited to see what I can make happen in the next 12 months already.

"I feel I have made so much progression in such a short space of time and I currently feel very proud of myself which is a hard emotion to feel for many people, especially me. Working closely with other women who are all so enthusiastic about my project has given me such confidence. Finding your niche is pint easy but when you get there, my gosh is it worth while. Anyone can do anything all you need is a dream, a passion and the internet.“

Spray Tan Training with Nouvatan is a must. We have helped set up thousands of successful businesses. Our techniques are suitable for both salons and mobile therapists. We teach you the things you need to know to make your spray tanning business successful at one of our many training venues situated throughout the UK, Europe & Worldwide.

Our training courses are fully accredited by The Guild. This means the certificate you receive is recognized by all the major Beauty Insurers and that you can start charging for your services straight after completing the course.

The course covers: - Health & Safety, Theory, Contraindications, Machine maintenance, cubicle erection but most importantly, how to spray tan in the most cost effective method giving the best possible results. A course typically lasts half a day. You will need to take a model along with you on the day as you need to practice your spray tanning so please make sure you have someone to take.

We will show you how to achieve a natural, full body tan using around 40ml of Nouvatan solution. This will allow you to achieve more than 20 tans per litre from 1 litre of Nouvatan solution.

All of our trainers are Nouvatan customers who love our solution and use it on their own customers. They have been trained by us and have successful spray tanning businesses of their own. They were just like you a few years ago!

Above all, training with us is informative, effective and fun. It doesn't end on the day of the course. Our trainers and our staff at Head Office are always here to help you with your queries. Your training day is just the start of becoming a successful Nouvatan spray tanner.

WELCOMING TO LIVERPOOL FASHION WEEK

The training you receive on the Nouvatan Spray Tanning course is NOT brand exclusive. Many companies offer in house diplomas that only allow you to use and get insurance if you use their specific branded products. Our course allows you to offer spray tanning using other company’s products should you wish too.

We know how important it is for you to be well trained. If your well trained and achieving fantastic, natural spray tans using our products then we are all winners.

The anticipation of going on holiday thrills us. I have just returned from Cyprus, my cases were zipped up and ready to go three weeks before our flight yet in the days leading up to departure I randomly stuffed in extra items

which I thought were needed but of course never got used. Whether you are embarking on a couple's retreat, heading for a family resort or a singles' haven, canny packing will make your holiday run smoother right from the start. So ditch the panic buying/stuffing of cases last minute. Your shoulder

and back will also thank you for it. And on another note... remember that they do have shops abroad so if you do forget something you can always pick it up at the other end. Pack one black vest and one white vest and these essentials will keep you at the top of the style stakes from beach to bar chic. Have a lovely holiday!
