A note from our editor...

Lifestyle editor's letter

June is here, and what a month to be in Liverpool – with so much going on, from Beer Craft festivals to Africa Oye, to the Maritime Festival, every weekend’s activities are pretty much taken care of. It’s my lovely husband’s birthday this month too – so our family of four will be heading into town to celebrate throughout the month and

Don’t forget it’s Father’s Day at the end of the month. This day isn’t as publicised as Mother’s Day but I hope in future this will change. No longer

Exposed Spray Tan UK is the first spray tanning brand I am happy to say has given me a gorgeous glow that lasts longer than traditional tans, is almost odourless, contains no alcohol (this is a good thing I promise) so is not as cold & with the added moisturisers my tan fades naturally and evenly. You can also choose a bespoke colour for any skin tone as the brand offers everything from a 6% natural tan - gorgeous for brides, men & anyone that wants a natural glow without people thinking they have been tanned right up to a deep, rich bronzed look. The Express Tan is fantastic for those girls n guys on the go. You can wash the guide colour off after only 2 hours to reveal a beautiful golden colour underneath and that is it done!

If you are a beauty therapist and would like to offer any of these products to your clients. Please contact us.

ou’re coming to play at Haydock this summer, have you got any good

memories or stories from when you have played in the past in the North-West?RICKY: Oh, some of my favourite gigs of all time have been in the North-West. One in particular, the second night at Manchester MEN was the best gig, I don’t know why, I still say it but it was my favourite gig ever. I came off and it was like ‘that was a moment’. And so yeah. It’s funny, over the Pennines you expect there to be a rivalry because we’re

from Leeds obviously. But we find that, you know because Leeds people are quite you know, we belong to them. So they don’t show their emotions as much to us as they do on the other side of the Pennines because we go down and like, invade and we have a good time. So you’ve obviously done some race course shows before, do they differ much from your normal kind of tours you do or like the festival performances?

SIMON: They are different, but that’s not to say its bad different, just different different. So there’s racing and drinking, and everyones quite dressed up and they’re all on a big night out and it’s all very good. But there’s no support band, it’s just sort of, we’re kind of the main event I guess, which is niceRICKY: it’s kinda like a wedding, because you’ve got guys with their ties around their heads going mental. I really enjoy it, it’s a different vibe to anything else we’ve done but we’re coming back to do more so we must enjoy it. It’s like a festival with good toilet facilities and a dress code. But it’s got the same vibe, I really like it, it’s good. Do you catch any of the racing while you are there?RICKY: ah it’s hilarious, I’m watching this lot all day betting and I don’t bet because I know it would be a problem if I started I’ve got to do the (five). So yeah, it’s funny and they keep popping out and putting bets on and it is funny. Are you normally into your horse racing then?SIMON: no not at all. Not every single one but most of them just go and put a couple things on, see what’s going on, try and win some money because that’s part of the fun. One of our crew guys, it’s his favourite gig of the year because he loves it. He stayed out doing all sorts of things all day, not setting anything up just betting. Do you approach these shows differently, because I guess it would a lot more of a greatest hits rather than, trying to focus on a lot of the new material?RICKY: well we’re not daft, you know, we can judge what we need to do at certain times and thing is, its becoming weird because

now the greatest hits are, I mean we’ve got a song on the radio at the moment and ‘Coming Home’ was a big song in my life, and people generally love the new stuff. So it’s becoming like we had a blip in the middle where we don’t really play anything off the fourth record even though it’s got some of the best stuff we’ve ever wrote on it but it’s just….SIMON: no-one (knows it) Do you have any rituals or anything before you go the stage or during the day?RICKY: there’s hundreds of them.SIMON: it’s getting ridiculous. RICKY: I’m gonna have to have like a watershed moment with all of them.SIMON: a cull.RICKY: and have a cull of the rituals because, yeah we’re all very superstitious but we’re all musicians so we’re all weirdo’s anyway, so. Yeah, but you know, as rituals go, we usually have a disco before we go on.KAISER CHIEFS

the biggest free music line-up makes waves for maritime festival

Culture Vulture

The music marathon is part of the International Mersey River Festival in partnership with Wild Thang branded clothing & merchandise experts. The

event will take place from the evening of Friday 5 June until Sunday 7 June at the Pier Head.

Part of the first ever BBC Music Day, 6 Music will be joined by BBC Introducing and Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF), to create seven hours of extraordinary music.

The event will kick off on Friday with the concert being hosted by Janice Long (BBC Radio 2) and Dave Monks (BBC Radio Merseyside.) Members of Resonate’s Youth Orchestra and Choir guided by LIMF's professional musicians will create an original composition, a mash up of old and new, Mozart to Drum and Bass.

Next there will be a feast of New Mersey Sounds as LIMF showcase some of the brightest new talents which have emerged through the festival Academy, and then BBC Introducing will present the cream of the crop from Liverpool’s brand new music scene, as BBC Introducing present Cavalry, Dave McCabe and the Ramifications and The Tea Street Band.

As the sun starts to set, the mic will be passed to Craig Charles as he invites to the stage his specially formed Fantasy Funk Band including guest vocals from soul legend Carlene Anderson.

The whole night will then be wrapped up with an epic show from the Father of Funk Craig Charles, making sure that this is the biggest free party the waterfront has ever seen!

Craig Charles said: “Last year’s Homecoming show was incredible, and this year is going to be even better. We have a brilliant line up, and my Fantasy Funk Band are a dream collection of soul and funk heroes. It's a good job there's no roof on this venue as this show would tear it off!”

For more information visit www.onemagnificentcity.co.uk or follow @OMCLpool on Twitter and One Magnificent City Liverpool on Facebook. Up-to-date details can also be found at www.cruise-liverpool.com, @cruiselpool or Liverpool Cruise Terminal on Facebook.

HEART RESEARCH UK VOLUNTEERS WANTEDBecome a volunteer for Heart Research UK and help make your community live healthier, happier, longer lives. Heart Research UK are seeking out the help of local volunteers all over the country to help them beat the country’s biggest killer, heart disease. Without volunteers supporting Heart Research UK with the work they do, children like three-year-old Riley Platts (pictured) would not have benefitted from the advances in research that helped save his life. Riley has gone through several major operations

that would not have been available without the technology developed and paid for by charities like Heart Research UK.Because heart disease affects people all over the UK, they need willing volunteers from all corners of the country and in-between to represent them in their local area. Their work spreads far and wide and some of the activity Heart Research do includes helping children live normal lives after surgery, funding grants in local communities to educate the public with crucial health matters, pioneering medical research, master classes training the UK’s young clinicians to be our experts of tomorrow as well as talks in schools to help prevent unhealthy lifestyles occurring. Volunteering for Heart Research UK is an extremely rewarding experience. Whether you are looking for work experience, a student increasing their knowledge, retired people with time to give, out of work, in-between jobs or a full time parent - they can offer you a role that will complement your life, fit around your usual day and give you a huge sense of fulfilment and experience. If you would like to be part of the team visit

www.heartresearch.org.uk/get-involved/volunteering

Ever fancied volunteering? The first week in June celebrates Volunteers’ Week. It’s an annual celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK. The week showcases the different volunteering roles on offer, taster sessions and team challenges with new partners, to volunteer recruitment events, awards ceremonies and launching new volunteering campaigns. Everyone is invited to join this national celebration of volunteers and volunteering, it’s up to you to decide exactly how you join in. There is a volunteer centre in Liverpool, they provide a one-stop resource for information, advice and guidance on all aspects of volunteering issues, both for potential volunteers and for voluntary/community organisations. It’s a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and of course make a difference. www.volunteercentreliverpool.org.uk/about-us.aspx

Blues skipper Phil Jagielka visited the newly opened Mersey Care NHS Trust Clock View Hospital in Walton in May to meet participants from Everton in the Community’s award-winning Imagine Your Goals programme as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.During May the campaign to raise awareness of

Lifestyle charityeverton in the communityBLUES STAR KEEN TO HELP THE HOMELESSEverton midfielder Mo Besic recently met players from an Everton in the Community Homeless FA Training Centre to find out more about what the club’s official charity does to combat poverty and homelessness in Merseyside. The Blues midfielder met the group of participants, aged 16 and over, at the Goals Soccer in Netherton to take part in one of their coaching sessions and find out more about the project and how it gives people experiencing homelessness in England the opportunity to develop their skills, gain more confidence and positively transform their lives.Bosnian international Besic first got involved in tackling homelessness and poverty back home in Bosnia after working with international charity Emmaus-MSF and was keen to see the role that Everton in the Community plays in Merseyside in overcoming poverty deprivation and disadvantage in Liverpool. The Homeless FA is part of Centrepoint, the leading youth homelessness charity and its Training Centre programme has been made possible thanks to BT Sport’s The Supporters’ Club, which has made a substantial grant to the Homeless FA to enable the charity to roll out the programme across all nine regions of the UK and a further 10 professional football clubs. For more information on the work of the Homeless FA visit www.homelessfa.org

mental health problems and improve the short and long term future of the nation’s mental wellbeing, began again. The club’s official charity began working with Mersey Care in 2007 to develop a series of programmes to specifically tackle mental health issues among different groups within the local community. One year later the partnership introduced Imagine Your Goals, a ground-breaking fitness programme that offers local people who are living with mental health issues an opportunity to talk about their problems and seek help and support in a familiar environment. The England international took part in a group session with young males from the programme where he spoke to the room about career highs and lows to date and how a positive mental attitude has helped him to overcome this. The men in attendance were then given the opportunity to share their own experiences with Jags before he was led on a tour of the new multi-million pound purpose built hospital to see the mental health facilities available to the people of Merseyside and spent some time meeting patients currently accessing the facility. The collaborative partnership provides seven specialised football sessions every week across Merseyside engaging up to 200 participants referred from Mersey Care NHS Trust and the success of the programme has seen the charity establish Merseyside’s first ever mental health football league. The successes achieved through Imagine Your Goals has seen Everton in the Community’s Health and Wellbeing team develop five additional mental health programmes in partnership with Mersey Care, supporting individuals experiencing dementia, unemployment and isolation and from next month the charity will be delivering weekly sessions from Clock View for its participants. For more information on Everton in the Community visit http://community.evertonfc.com/

recent court decision has given an ex-wife the permission to make an application for financial relief following a divorce some 25 years ago.

It is vital to note that, if there was no order made by the court dealing with the matrimonial finances and dismissing all future claims, an application to the court could be made to resolve the financial matters at any time………….even 25 years after the divorce was completed. It is also now not uncommon for a person to come to us for advice who has married for a second or even a third time. The issue is often that when an earlier marriage was dissolved the financial matters relating to the divorce were not properly finalised. This could have been for any number of reasons such as there being no assets at the time, a misbelief that it wasn’t necessary or a lack of legal advice. In the recent case, that is exactly what has happened and now the ex-husband has a pot which he has accrued since separation and he is at real risk of having to make a substantial payment to his ex-wife.Clearly this is frustrating & distressing to him and his family, but unfortunately for him, an application to the court has been made, despite the ex-husband arguing that the application couldn’t possibly be successful , however the court didn’t agree and that application will now be heard, the outcome may not be known until later this year or early next year.Whether you have re-married or not, the fact remains that if you did not formally resolve the financial matters at the time of your divorce; there is a real risk that your ex could come back to seek financial relief now. The assets that you have built since your divorce could be at risk.

racey Miller Family Law (TMFL) has won the small law firm title at the Liverpool Law Society Legal Awards, collecting the

accolade at a glittering ceremony attended by more than 300 representatives from the city’s leading legal talent on Friday (15th May). The specialist legal firm impressed judges with its ability to successfully compete against some of the region’s largest law firms and its commitment to investing in the business while maintaining a niche approach.

“We are thrilled and delighted to have won the award for Best Small Law Firm, a law practice can only be as good as the people who work in it, and this is a true testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone at TMFL,” says Tracey Miller, principal of the firm.

In the past 12 months TMFL has increased its workforce by 30 per cent and moved to new premises in the heart of the city centre, which the company purchased which will allow it to double staff numbers over the coming years.TMFL holds a reputation as one of the region’s leading family law firms, with the niche business boasting more fee earners than specialist departments at some of the country’s largest law firms.

At the awards, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Liverpool, the Liverpool Law Society president, Emlyn Williams, said the event “demonstrated excellence in legal services provided by the member firms based in and around Merseyside”.

The independent judging panel said: “Tracey Miller Family Law came across to the judges as a small firm with a large firm mentality, maximising its specialism to compete in a demanding and at times difficult market. By restricting its practice to family law, including international disputes, the firm can offer a broad range of experienced and informed advice, if necessary through other networked small firms.

“The judges were impressed by the commitment to training and investment in IT infrastructure, which could easily have been side-lined in a small firm context but which was not. The 7 day service is also to be commended providing excellent additional client service.”

Lifestyle shopping made personal

I have just returned from a Personal Shopping experience at Debenhams in

Liverpool One. When you get to your mid 40s I am sure I speak for many when I say that shopping isn’t as pleasurable as it was in my 20s when a size 10 effortlessly slid over my hips. Now with six children in tow and with the onset of middle age spread, I hate clothes shopping. Nothing seems to fit and with clothes sizes changing in every store on the high street, it was a welcome invitation to be pampered by the Debenhams staff. I made my way to their Personal Shopping on the first floor to be offered a glass of wine or a cup of tea. Then the personal shopping team sat me down for 15 minutes while we chatted about my style and the type of clothes I liked. What outfits was I wanting For holiday? Work?

So

Casual? Weekend. My brief to them was to give me a summer wardrobe that was versatile and comfortable. I don’t do suits. Then I settled back into a comfy chair with a magazine while they whizzed around the store and returned with a rail of options. I spent an hour trying on various items, and ended up with a gorgeous pair of floral trousers that, had I browsed in store myself, would have surely bypassed.I definitely recommend this personal shopping experience, it takes the stress out of buying and makes you feel a little bit like a superstar as well.

Finally summer is here and what better way to spend it than going to a music festival or two? Here are a few essentials for your packing list. The best advice is to onlytake what’s indispensable. Things like - amazing metallic transfer tattoos, you don’t get much more on trend than these, and they last all weekend no matter how hard you party. Waterproof mascara, because it's probably going to rain. And don't forget the big sunglasses - because nothing hides the fact that you haven't been to sleep in 48 hours better. A two man tent, you and your BBF might need to crash at some point, so pick one that's going to stand out amongst the sea of other two men tents. And a torch, all the better to find your way into the correct tent.

Well l am sat writing this from beautiful island Phuket Thailand, yes I am back again. Travel (the life of a make up artist.) I was booked to do the make up for Miss Hooters International Pageant 2015. The image will go to America then Lucky Pan the Hooters model will go to Vegas to bring the crown back. It was hot shooting on the beach but who’s complaining, not me! Excited for tomorrow shooting at Niki beach for a very high end magazine - 50,000 copies to be published with my name on the credits, then of course the launch party on a super yacht. I will send pictures of that in my next column. Ok so products I am loving: Urban Decay De Slick make up setting spray - a must have for the summer, going on holiday or out in 40’ heat like me. Shake this well before you use it guys and hold it 8 -10” away from the face, spray and let dry then spray again. Your make up is going nowhere with this spray. It also has oil control, perfect to stop the shine. Also Dior’s old faithful Lip Maximizer. This lip gloss comes in 3 shades now. I love the tingle, how it really pouts the lips and the fresh menthal scent that comes with it. For any tips on make up products and how to apply it, follow my Twitter and Instagram.

I hope you enjoyed my column. Goodbye from Thailand.

inally summer is here, so ditch the heavy eye-liners and red lips and go translucent and fresh. We still have those perfectly contoured bushy brows, but for the rest of the face the sun kissed nude make

up look seems to be the most pressing trend. Metallic and glittery accents form the next important summer 2015 makeup trend, which are really ideal options when a night in town is planned. Whether you are more into gold, pewter or bronze, there is the ideal makeup look for your own taste and personality, since precious metallics and glittery vibes are so hot this summer.

You can read more about Rachel and where she is performing by visiting her at www.rachelspencer86.com

RACHEL SPENCERFollowing on from my last article on how

to begin a singing career this month I will be delving a little more into the ins and outs of the profession.

Richard Wagner, a 19th century German composer and conductor, once said that the “human voice is really the foundation of all music.” He may

made by the human voice were actually used as a guide for the sounds of many musical instruments. Singing refers to the act of making musical sounds with the voice, instead of a musical instrument; and is often done to accompany instrumental music. This is referred to as cantata singing. Acapella singing, on the other hand, is a type of singing with no musical accompaniment. This type of singing requires the singer alone to create rhythm and harmony, often rehearsed in the shower!

Obviously, a singer/vocalist is a person that sings. However, there is much more to it than just opening one’s mouth and belting out a tune. Professional singers must be able to reach certain pitches with their voices, and be able to carry a tune. This means being able to create certain notes or pitches with their voice.

Knowing which notes and pitches to reach with the voice is not easy! A singer will usually use sheet music to know how high or low their voices should be at certain points in a song; sheet music will also usually tell a singer how long or short each note should be. Manysingers are born with the knack for carrying a tune; the majority will usually need to practice this skill in order to perfect it.

Singing is a type of performance art, and singers are considered to be performing artists. Aprofessional singer’s goal is to entertain other people during a performance; either as lead singer in a band, solo or backing singer, they may be multi-talented and play an instrument, write music or lyrics . Anyone interested in a singing career should have a love of music; usually enjoying listening to music, simply for music’s sake. However a love of music can only take a person so far, an aspiring singer should also have a good voice, and be able to sing well. Perseverance and dedication are equally important when looking to start a professional singing career. The music industry in general is very competitive and hard work and rejection the norm.

With the exception of an opera career, which usually requires years of formal training, most singing careers do not require a formal education; however, formal training

Artists who like to sing can perform just about anywhere they want, for many, this means singing in the shower or karaoke at the local pub. Professional singers, on the other hand, are usually a little more particular about where they perform.

Artists who are just starting their singing careers will often perform nearly anywhere there is an audience to listen. For example, singers just starting their careers might perform in bars, nightclubs, and pubs, as they become more popular and gain a following, they may then be able to book concerts at concert halls and theatres.

Besides doing live shows, artist’s also record music in recording studios; these recording may either be sold for the entertainment and enjoyment of others, or it may be used for other purposes, like advertising.

out as a singer.

Lifestyle mohawke beats

This June Scottish producer HUDSON MOHAWKE has released LANTERN, it’s his first solo full length album in nearly six years. Hudson has been on a meteoric rise the last few years, working with some

of the biggest names in hip hop, from DRAKE, KANYE WEST, JOHN LEGEND, PUSHA-T, YOUNG THUG and ANTONY HEGARTY. From the age of 15 he was an award winning scratch DJ producing happy hardcore on cracked software; he came to define a generation of electronic fusion producers but, unlike many of his peers, now he has matured into a fully fledged contemporary hit maker continually working to break the mould. To his avid fans he’s never been tied to one genre; and with LANTERN I heard the realisation of everything he has been working on since that Glasgow bedroom, it’s a true classic.

Lantern was worth the wait, every track delivers. It is a polished performance, a real smorgasbord of electronic sounds and saturated baselines and in some cases, electronic wind chimes. Every track with every beat is produced to perfection, thus creating a very healthy and very fat sound. This

is an album to listen to with the volume turned high, its eclectic electric intelligent beats are on every track. But not every track follows a specific genre or sound, but like the good DJ he is, the tracks are arranged to meld seamlessly together with no jarring. As long as you like electronic beats festival style, then you can’t go wrong with Lantern. Expect to hear some of these tracks on the backs of adverts too, the most obvious choice for this is the first release on the album Very First Breath’ features a humdinger of a euphoric vocal from French vocalist and Breakbot collaborator Irfane.

In short, if you like electronic dance then this album is the sound of your summer.

LANTERN is released by Warp Records on 15 June 2015 on Double Gatefold Vinyl, CD, Digital and Limited First Edition Vinyl with print and bonus track SEX. www.hudsonmohawke.com

Lifestyle best enjoyed with friends

The best summer drinks to slake your thirst are full of flavour - they can be subtle, fruity, or just plain refreshing. From a chilled beer, to organic gin served with a slice of melon, to alcoholic fruity cocktails to non alcoholic summer presses to a chilled glass of wine - all can be enjoyed under the blazing hot sun in the afternoon, to under the patio heater during the long summer evenings - at home or in your local beer garden

- of which Liverpool has been blessed with many. But all are best enjoyed with friends.

Lifestyle what's on your plate

ATMOSPHERE - 8/10 Welcoming and relaxing.

ENTERTAINMENT - No there was no entertainment - which is great because I go to a restaurant to eat and chat.

CHOICE ON MENU - 8/10 A wide and varied menu from modern French to a few of the classics.

TASTE - 9/10 Excellent, my absolute favourite thing was the Fondant Aux Chocolat, this was so mouth wateringly good that next time I'll be ordering 2.

SERVICE - 9/10 Superb - every member of staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu often pointing to their favourites.

TABLE LOCATION - 9/10 We were sat at the back so we could people watch without being seen - perfect.

WOULD WE GO THERE AGAIN? Yes, in fact I already have. However I feel that even though children are welcome and are well catered for, the style of food, and atmosphere lends itself more to intimate dining for two.

ATMOSPHERE - 9/10 Was a little too noisy at times, difficult to hear each other.

ENTERTAINMENT - 7/10 Live music on while we were eating.

CHOICE ON MENU - 5/10 Was limited menu offered.

TASTE - 9/10 Superb, served piping hot but a little salty.

SERVICE - 9/10 Again, superb and very friendly but the waitress asked us a little too oftene if we were ok, interrupting our conversation.

TABLE LOCATION - 6/10 Was by the window but close to where people were standing by the bar to drink. It would have been nicer tucked into the corner.

WOULD WE GO THERE AGAIN? Absolutely, maybe not on a sunday evening though as was just too busy, we would have liked it a little quieter.

t some point back in the early 90s Liverpool’s growth as a seat of higher education blossomed beyond all expectation. This was due, in no small part, to the

continued global evolution of club culture and the phenomenal gravitational pull of local student-friendly club nights like Cream, Bugged Out and Voodoo. The widespread popularity of what would turn out to be the prototype student-friendly clubber’s bar, Baa Bar and the cultural appeal of places like the late lamented Liverpool Palace also played their part.

Very soon, the number of bars in the city reached saturation point and our native population alone could no longer support the sheer volume of local independent outlets which hoped to cash in on the bonanza. This was even before national breweries and branded chains like Revolution, Walkabout and Lloyds climbed aboard the groovy train.

A shining wit quipped at the time that he had parked up on Fleet Street to go and do some

shopping in Town and when he got back some scally had opened a Cuban shots bar in the boot of his Jag.

Back in October when they were returning to the city in their droves, I wrote about the importance of the student population to the local night time economy. This becomes all too evident in June when the alumni take a big sack of washing home to mum and dad and head off to Glastonbury. It’s not so noticeable at weekends because the locals and our reputation as a national party city are more than enough to keep business booming as usual. It is through the week though when bar staff get their hours reduced or laid off altogether that the imbalance becomes apparent.

Like all DJs I tend to get my going out done through the week. I have to say that I’ve always preferred this to the fever of Saturday nights and the sometimes claustrophobic intensity of weekends. You can get served very quickly and sit, yes, actually sit with your friends and relax. I’d recommend it to anybody the next time they haven’t got a school night.

Lifestyle an upcoming miracle

is back on the road with his latest tour, Miracle.

DERREN BROWNDERREN BROWN

50

Page 51: Lifestyle june 2015 low

Lifestyle an upcoming miracle

e’s a magician, illusionist and mentalist but Derren Brown has made his name as the ultimate enigma. After over a decade

captivating audiences up and down the country, Brown still jumps at the chance to perform live. “Oh I love it,” he grins. “This is my 13th year of touring, six months every year so I love it. TV can be fun too – with my Apocalypse show a few years ago it was amazing to be sitting back watching it all unfold; as this guy goes through this end-of-world experience it’s like a huge practical joke really. It’s huge fun but with so many people involved, months and months of preparation, things can often become quite frustrating. TV has its ups and downs, whereas with the stage, I think every aspect of it is fun.“Writing up ideas is fun, rehearsing is fun, and above all once you’re on the road with it, doing this adrenaline filled show - even if no one else is enjoying it I love doing it every night! It’s my favourite time of the year.”Bringing something new and innovative to audiences with each and every tour, the months running up to the show requite a lot of brain power. “I sit down and really think about it. I’ve written most of the shows with a guy called Andrew Nyman who directs the show, we co-write them together and another guy called Andrew O’Connor is part of the process too. So really the three of us sit around for a month or so and talk about what material will go into the show and what will shape it. And then we have a month of rehearsing, getting it up on its feet until you have the vague sense that, ‘OK, that should work’. But it’s only really when you start doing it that first week, when you actually try it on real people that you know - you just have no idea how it’s going to work till you try it with a real audience.”

For any Derren Brown show, audience participation is crucial; really, the people become part of the production. “In the last show, Infamous, I did a piece based on mediumship so I’m talking to people’s dead relatives and so on … it ended up being the strongest thing in the show but we made it in just one afternoon a couple of weeks in because another thing wasn’t

working and I just said, ‘Oh, I’ll try that tonight.’ So it’s a funny process but audiences kind of teach me what works which is interesting.”For Brown, the mediumship act also allowed him to present the practise as fraudulent – though of course, psychics would contest that. “I think sometimes the best way of exposing something is to replicate it and then to explain that you’re not using any psychic abilities to do so. If you just debunk something and explain how it works then people can always say, ‘Ah well, the person I saw wasn’t using those techniques…’ You can always argue the other way, but if you can replicate it - so therefore also making it entertaining and emotional - then I think it’s more effective than just saying, this isn’t real, this is how it works. I don’t actually say how I do do it but I do say I’m not psychic.”Travelling the country for the Miracle tour also gives Brown the chance to enjoy his new surroundings. “I get my days free which is something I don’t normally have in real life. It’s amazing to be able to potter round and go to book shops and things which I wouldn’t have the time for otherwise.” From time to time he’ll bump into fans, but outside of the arena, Brown doesn’t think he’s particularly recognisable. “I’m not very tall or especially flamboyant, especially since I lost my little goatee, I generally don’t get stopped that much and if I do people seem really nice!”Most likely, Brown saves his quota of powerful presence for the stage instead.

n June 18 the Liverpool O2 Academy will be playing host to a live performance of the historic and iconic, “The Man Who Sold the

World” album by David Bowie.Tony Visconti on bass, Woody Woodmansey on drums, Glenn Gregory on vocals and Steve Norman on acoustic guitar, saxophone, percussion and vocals were joined by stellar supergroup ‘Woody Woodmansey’s Holy Holy’, will perform Bowie’s entire ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ album and a set of other classic Bowie songs from 1970-73. This remarkable performance features very special guests Marc Almond and Gary Kemp. David Bowie’s seminal album ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, masterfully produced by Tony Visconti, was recorded in 1970 with the powerful drumming of Woody Woodmansey and Visconti’s unconventional ‘lead’ bass playing forming a recondite and lauded rhythm section. Tony Visconti says:"I am thrilled how well this new album represents the live show we did last September. I always wanted to have a fresh go at playing the The Man Who Sold The World album live as it was never played live ever! Woody Woodmansey and I, two of the original musicians who recorded this dark masterpiece, are still ready, willing and able (and I might add, FIT) are joined by Glenn Gregory, not stepping into Mr Bowie’s shoes, but making this music his very own. Mick Ronson was, of course, the original guitarist playing all the parts, so we are joined by 70’s specialists Paul Cuddeford and James Stevenson on very, very loud guitars to make it beefier and even darker (did I mention LOUDER?). So to say I’m in HEAVEN when I’m playing with this band is understating how satisfying it is to revisit something I’ve been wanting to do all these years, and so LOUDLY, too.” 18 June – Liverpool, O2 Academy - Tickets from Ticketweb.co.uk / 0844 477 2000

Just a short walk across a bridge is Media City, where the BBC and ITV have studios alongside Salford Uni and various hotels and eateries.

We had lunch at The Dockyard Pub, I ordered

a ham & cheese Baggie, it was an enormous sandwich in a paper bag with fries and ketchup and mayo on the side, Gina had an egg salad sandwich with sweet potato fries, 2 bottles of Coke each and the bill was £13.05!! Fantastic value and very friendly staff.

We sat in some deckchairs after lunch and kept a look out for celebrities, sadly we didn't spot any, maybe next time .

Recently, my wife and I visited the Imperial War Museum North, it is another iconic building gracing Salford Quays. The IWM is a must for all age groups, it covers all the bases, we saw young people learning and older people reminiscing, we did both. There were many school children in the museum and they looked the very opposite of bored. There are daily tours and "hands on" sessions.

Every hour, on the hour there's a big picture show, lasting about 10 minutes, it's a 360 degree audio - visual experience, this is not to be missed, we were enthralled, along with every one else. It's announced by a siren and the lights going out.

The vast exhibition has some thing for every one, from the Street to Trench of World War 1, to the present day. My wife Gina, was thoroughly mesmerised by the Women and War exhibit.

I was particularly affected by the newsreal footage being shown of troops in the Somme in 1914, smiling and waving to the camera, I found it rather chilling.

There is a large assortment of items on display, including JRR Tolkiens revolver that he carried during the Battle of the Somme, and a piece of distorted steel from one of the New York twin towers that were attacked on 9/11.

We found it to be a unique and overwhelming experience and would encourage you to go and visit this Gem in the heart of Salford quays.

Before leaving, we bought a couple of souvenirs in the Museum gift shop and went up to the Air 56

We found it to be a unique and overwhelming experience and would encourage you to go and visit this Gem in the heart of Salford quays.

Before leaving, we bought a couple of souvenirs in the Museum gift shop and went up to the Air

Citroën AIRCROSS CONCEPT CAR REVEALED

The Crossover class has just got that little more interesting. If you are unfamiliar with the term crossover, you are not alone, it’s a new thing, but they are firmly on

trend at the moment. Basically when you see a car on the road, and you can’t decide if it’s a SUV or a really high car -then that’s the crossover car. Apparently they will be the most popular type of car sold in coming years with lots of manufacturers clambering to create their own model.

Cue the Citroen Aircoss - it looks like the Cactus - this is the future style of Citroen models as the Cactus, even with the plastic stuck to the sides of the exterior is hugely popular. But what make this model a sure cut above the rest is that it features plug-in hybrid technology.

The Aircross is powered by a 218bhp 1.6-litre THP petrol engine, paired to a 95bhp rear-mounted electric motor. This enables 31 miles of all-electric driving. The Aircross also promises a 4.5-second 0-62mph time, plus 166mpg economy and CO2 emissions of just 39g/km – so it’s speedy too. Inside is an ultra comfy four-seat layout, inspired by furniture design.

Each cocooning leather seat comes with built-in speakers, which amplify other passengers’ voices to make in-car communication easier, while there are two 12-inch HD touchscreens on the dashboard. These relay driving data, plus allow passengers to watch films, use Internet-based apps or program the navigation.

Citroen say to expect the fully buyable version late 2017.

“DESIGN OF THE YEAR”

The Renault Twingo with its ultra modern and very cool design has been awarded the title of ‘Design of the Year’ in the 2015 Fleet World Honours at a ceremony held this afternoon at the Royal Automobile Club in London.

What’s not to love about this most super of super minis? For a start it doesn’t come in different colours – no the Twingo is way to hipster for that, it comes in 6 “personalities” instead. But it’s so much more than it’s cheeky retro styling. The clever Twingo designers moved the engine to the rear, meaning that this little Renault has a tighter turning circle than most, making it ideal for town and city driving. Its cause is further helped by a choice of small yet responsive petrol engines that give their best at lower speeds. Most of the “Personalites” come with a wealth of standard extras, couple this with the fact that currently it has a very strong resale value, all points to the Twingo remaining at the top of the super mini city car pile.

MATERIALS/TOOLS

12 TO 18v cordless driver 4 to 6mm drill bit

screw driver bit for drillred plugs

Screws becoming loose in hinges is a common problem. This quite often occurs when a heavy door has been hung for some time or when a door has had to be changed and taken on and off for some reason. All too often, all of a sudden you find that some screws are just not holding in as well as they did originally.

A simple easy quick fix without taking off the door can be achieved. First off remove the loose screw by using the reverse action on your drill driver with screwdriver piece attached. Next change your drill piece from a screw bit piece to a drill driver.

Using a 4mm to 6mm drill bit, drill out a hole to the length of about 40 mm. Next, insert a 5mm red plug, pushing it in as far as possible.

Using the same screw as you had taken out, swop your drill bit to a screwdriver piece, and start to drive the screw home, you should straight away feel the hinge being pulled in tighter to the actual frame.

It may be wise to do at least one screw on all three hinges on a heavy door. This tip can also be used on smaller lighter doors like cupboard doors, even if it’s a chipboard or veneered frame/ carcass, do all the same principles and this should fix the problem.

Lifestyle business performance

personal effectiveness

n the 1930’s in Texas, USA, individuals at the frontier pushed the boundaries of human endurance and perseverance driving from East to West in search of a better life. A family drove themselves though the harsh winters

to gain land in Texas to set up home and live off the land. Unfortunately the land was poor and the harvests meagre, forcing our intrepid family into starvation and very hard times. Prospectors agreed to pay the family to drill for oil on their land and within 18 months had tapped into one of the biggest oil reserves in the Texas making the land owner a fortune over night. The local news reported that this man had always been wealthy but had never found a way to tap into the wealth that sat beneath his feet.

The first key to tapping into our potential is to understand where we are heading and to decide on what success we are trying to achieve. Setting SMART goals is the start. We then need to be aware enough to look at what are the CHALLENGES that hold us back. Lack of belief, FEAR of failure, FEAR of success, our past, our education or lack of, lack of opportunities, maybe lack of success in the past. These challenges are only an issue if we decide to let them be. Focus on what you have got not what you haven't. Focus on what you can do not what you cannot.Einstein said “we cannot overcome our problems with the same level of thing as they were created with”. So when faced with our challenges we need to learn how to think, over it, around it, under it, whatever it takes to pass it. We need to train our minds think more about possible solutions than the problems. I know this may seem to be common sense, but I can assure you it’s not always common practice. So when we

PART 1

focus on what could hold us back we can find more reasons to support this. When we look for ways to succeed, again we find more ways of succeeding. This may sound like I am stating the obvious and in some ways I am but there is REAL reasons for this which i will explore next month. So surround yourself with people who support you moving forward and moving on. There is some good news and bad news. The good news first, our success and Effectiveness is in our hands. The bad news is our success and Effectiveness is in our hands. Its 100% in our control. We have a choice which of these messages we choose to believe and focus on. Tap into your reserves and unleash your potential.

I was inundated with messages saying how refreshing it was to see a real shape. We are all real, we are all shapes (mine is round), there is no “right” shape. I have had 6 children and proud of it. Sadly someone reported this image on Facebook for nudity (I know I know) which prompted even more messages of support to me which led me to launch the campaign to get you all posting pics with #getalifestyle
