Important Information

• Severe dehydration and excessive water loss may cause falselow results. If you believe you are suffering from severedehydration, consult a healthcare professional immediately.

• Test results below 60 mg/dL (3.3 mmol/L) mean low bloodglucose (hypoglycemia). Test results greater than 240 mg/dL(13.3 mmol/L) mean high blood glucose (hyperglycemia). If youget results below 60 mg/dL or above 240 mg/dL, and do nothave symptoms, first repeat the test. If you have symptoms or continue to get results that fall below 60 mg/dL or above 240 mg/dL, follow the treatment advice of your healthcareprofessional.

• If you are experiencing symptoms that are not consistent withyour blood glucose test results AND you have followed allinstructions described in the OneTouch® FastTake® Owner’sBooklet, call your healthcare professional.

• A red blood cell count (hematocrit) that is very high (above55%) or very low (below 30%) can cause false results.

BEFORE TESTING

Checking the Display

Each time you insert a test strip into theOneTouch® FastTake® Meter or turn themeter on, all segments of the display willappear briefly. This tells you that thesystem is performing several self-checksand allows you to confirm that all displaysegments are working properly. (Seepages 4 and 5 for all display segments.)

Coding the Meter

Code numbers are used to calibrate theOneTouch® FastTake® Test Strips with theOneTouch® FastTake® Meter for accurateresults. You must code the meter beforeusing it for the first time and then everytime you change to another vial ofOneTouch® FastTake® Test Strips. Each timeyou test, check that the code number onthe meter display matches the codenumber on the test strip vial.

8

CAUTION: If the code number displayed on the meter does not match the number printed on the vial, test results may be inaccurate.

OneTouch® Ultra® Control Solution is used tocheck that the meter and test strips areworking together as a system and that you areperforming the test correctly. It is veryimportant that you do this simple checkroutinely to make sure you get accurate results.

OneTouch® Ultra® Control Solution contains aknown amount of glucose that reacts withOneTouch® FastTake® Test Strips. Compare yourcontrol solution test results with the expectedrange printed on the test strip vial label.Control solution should be used to:

• Practice the test procedure.

• Make sure your meter and teststrips are working togetherproperly.

• Ensure you are performing thetest correctly.

12

Before you use the OneTouch® FastTake® Meter totest your blood for the first time, practice theprocedure using control solution. When you can dothree tests in a row that are within the expectedrange, you are ready to test your blood.

Do a control solution test:• When you begin using a new vial of test strips.

• At least once a week.

• Whenever you suspect that the meter or test stripsare not working properly.

• When your blood glucose test results are notconsistent with how you feel, or when you thinkyour results are not accurate.

• If you drop the meter.

The control solution test is similar to a blood testexcept that you use OneTouch® Ultra® ControlSolution instead of a drop of blood.

16

If test results fall outside the range printed on the test strip vial, repeat the test. Out-of-rangeresults may be caused by one or more of the following:

• Error in performing the test.

• Failure to shake the control solution vial vigorously.

• Expired or contaminated control solution.

• Control solution that is too warm or too cold.

• Failure to discard the first drop of controlsolution and wipe the dispenser tip clean.

• Improper coding of the meter.

• Test strip deterioration.

• Meter malfunction.

CAUTION: If you continue to get control solution test resultsthat fall outside of the range printed on the vial, the systemmay not be working properly. Do not use the system to testyour blood if you continue to get test results that fall outsideof the range. If you are unable to resolve the problem, callLifeScan Customer Services at 1 800 227-8862.

Massaging the fingertip gently will helpyou obtain a round drop of blood. Do notsqueeze excessively on the puncture site. The blood sample must be at least 1.5microlitre (1.5 µL) in volume ( actual size)or you may get an error message or aninaccurate test result. Do not smear theblood sample. Proceed with your bloodglucose test.

Massage the Fingertip.STEP 2

21

Position the Sampler.STEP 1

Hold the OneTouch® UltraSoft™ Samplerfirmly against the side of your finger.Press the release button.

Fingertip Blood Sampling

The OneTouch® FastTake® System requires a verysmall blood drop to perform a test. You may obtain itfrom a fingertip or arm. There are importantdifferences in the procedures for fingertip testing and arm testing. See next page for information onobtaining a blood sample from the arm. Choose adifferent puncture site each time you test. Repeatedpunctures in the same spot may cause soreness andcalluses.

DCO_05244004A_OTFT_OB_US 6/30/03 10:38 AM Page 21

Page 31: Lifescan Fasttake User Guide

Arm Blood Sampling (“Alternate Site”)The arm has fewer nerve endings than the fingertipso you may find that obtaining a blood sample fromthe arm may be much less painful than using thefingertip. The technique for arm sampling is differentfrom fingertip sampling. Also there are differencesbetween arm samples and fingertip samples that youshould understand.

22

Important Information About Arm Testing• Under certain conditions, blood glucose test results obtained

using samples taken from your arm may differ significantly fromfingertip samples.

• The conditions in which these differences are more likely to occurare when your blood glucose is changing rapidly such asfollowing a meal, an insulin dose, or associated with physicalexercise.

• When blood glucose is changing rapidly, fingertip samples showthese changes more quickly than arm samples.

• When your blood glucose is falling, testing with a fingertip samplemay identify a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) level sooner than atest with an arm sample.

• Use arm samples only for testing prior to, or more than two hoursafter, meals, insulin doses, or physical exercise.

• Testing performed within two hours after meals, insulin doses, orphysical exercise, or whenever you feel that your glucose levelsmay be changing rapidly, should be done from the fingertip.

DCO_05244004A_OTFT_OB_US 6/30/03 10:38 AM Page 22

Page 32: Lifescan Fasttake User Guide

23

Important Information About Arm Testing (continued)• You should also use fingertip testing whenever you have a concern

about hypoglycemia (insulin reactions) such as when driving acar, particularly if you suffer from hypoglycemic unawareness(lack of symptoms to indicate an insulin reaction), as arm testingmay fail to detect hypoglycemia.

What you should do:• Use arm or fingertip samples for testing prior to, or more than

two hours after, meals, insulin doses, or physical exercise. • Routine testing before meals can be done either at the fingertip or

the arm.• Consult your healthcare professional before you begin

using the arm for testing.

To aid in obtaining a blood sample fromthe arm, replace the regular sampler cap with the OneTouch® UltraClear™ cap. If necessary, set the sampler for a deeperpuncture.

Install the OneTouch®

UltraClear™ Cap.STEP 1

Continue holding the blood sampler againstthe skin for a few seconds until the blooddrop forms. Allow enough blood to formunder the cap until you have a bloodsample that is sufficient to fill theconfirmation window of the test strip ( actual size). If you must massage thearea to obtain more blood, do not squeezethe site excessively.

Allow Blood Drop to Form.STEP 5

If bruising occurs, you may choose to lance afingertip instead. If you are having difficulty obtainingblood from the arm, call LifeScan Customer Services at 1 800 227-8862.

Note: Blood is applied to the test strip in the samemanner as described on page 26–27. However, youmay find it more convenient to hold the forearmstill and bring the meter and test strip to the bloodsample.

COMPARING METER ANDLABORATORY RESULTSOneTouch® FastTake® Meter test results and laboratory testresults are both expressed in plasma-equivalent units. However, the result you obtain from your meter may be different from yourlaboratory result due to normal variation. Still, the two resultsshould be within 20% of each other.1 To make an accuratecomparison between meter and laboratory results, follow theguidelines below.

Before you go to the lab:

• Perform a control solution test to make sure the meter isworking properly.

• It is best to fast for at least eight hours before doingcomparison tests.

• Take your meter with you to the lab.

While at the lab:

• Make sure that the samples for both tests (the meter testand the lab test) are taken and tested within 15 minutes ofeach other.

• Wash your hands before obtaining a blood sample.• Never use your meter with blood that has been collected in a

gray-top test tube.• Use fresh capillary blood only.

DCO_05244004A_OTFT_OB_US 6/30/03 10:38 AM Page 34

Page 44: Lifescan Fasttake User Guide

35

You may still have a variation from the result because bloodglucose levels can change significantly over short periods, especially if you have recently eaten, exercised, takenmedication, or experienced stress.2 In addition, if you have eatenrecently, the blood glucose level from a fingerstick can be up to70 mg/dL higher than blood drawn from a vein (venous sample)used for a lab test.3 Therefore, it is best to fast for eight hoursbefore doing comparison tests. Factors such as the amount of redblood cells in the blood (a high or low hematocrit) or the loss ofbody fluid (severe dehydration) may also cause a meter result tobe different from a laboratory result.
