Many of you already are familiar with Lifeline magazine, originally a publication of UofN Pune, then of UofN Lonavala. Lifeline started
in 2001 with just two people and a lot of hard work. “(Lifeline) was a result of many hours of prayers and discussions literally under the
tree as we did not have an offi ce for a good three to four months,” wrote Aldrin Bogi, one of the two founders. The magazine’s original
purpose was to encourage the Christian community with relevant teachings and to inform people about the University of the Nations’
many training courses.
SpiceCom has now been given permission take charge of the Lifeline magazine. We are renaming it Lifeline Plus. It will now be a voice for
all of YWAM India, sharing ministry stories, upcoming schools and much more. Lifeline Plus will be more than a print magazine; it will
also include video and a website. We want to share your stories.
We as the Lifeline Plus team want to say a special thank you to all the original Lifeline team members. You have laid the all-important
groundwork for us to continue to expand your vision. Special thanks to: Joanne, Aldrin, Denny, Deepak, Jaison, Jussara, Deepali, Vivek
and others who helped along the way. We hope to continue with the same dedication and excellence. Finally, thank you for picking up
our fi rst issue of Lifeline Plus.

.org One of our strengths as YWAM is our decentralized approach to mission, but it also has created gaps in the fl ow of
information. This structure gives people freedom to grow, create and expand but leaves some feeling disconnected
and isolated. The avenues of communication in India need to be strengthened both within the mission and out
to the wider Christian family. SpiceCom is YWAM India’s fi rst communications team focused on strengthening the
nervous system – an expression created by YWAM international leadership, after much prayer, to symbolize our
communication systems.
SpiceCom is a diverse group of people passionate about connecting, equipping and educating the YWAM family in
India in the area of communications. As of August ‘08 our team is here to serve you, the dedicated people working
through out India. Check out our website for more information and staff opportunities: www.spicecom.org.
Special thanks to Rob Abraham, Joshua Tanaami, Pamela D’Souza, and the YWAM International Communications
Network (ywamicn.org) for helping SpiceCom get started.
Vision Statement: SpiceCom is a team of dedicated communicators serving YWAM South Asia by bridging the
communication gaps within the mission and between YWAM and the local church. Our goal is to Train, Motivate,
Facilitate, Multiply, Equip and Empower YWAMers to be eff ective communicators.

The roughly paved street could have been in any city or village. The warm
Mumbai sun shone on the small, colorfully painted houses, shops, carts
and people selling all sorts of wares. Children played, dogs trotted by,
motorcycles, cows, and a few trucks all squeezed through on the dusty road.
What made this place diff erent was the clump of young ladies who stood daily at
the entrance to a narrow lane. This was no ordinary group of women. Most wore
bright red lipstick while they waited for customers. This was the entrance to one
of Mumbai’s Red Light Districts. Every day hundreds of men visit these women,
leaving them with rupees, disease, and sometimes children. They live with very
little nutrition or dignity, hope for nothing, and die young. Visiting this place, it is
easy to ask, “Where is God?”
It’s not diffi cult to imagine that the women of Mumbai’s sex industry have asked
similar questions. Statistics vary as to the number of prostitutes working in
Mumbai, but rough estimates put it around 100,000. A survey of prostituted
women in India reveals their reasoning for staying in prostitution (in descending
order of signifi cance): poverty/ unemployment; lack of proper reintegration
services, lack of options; stigma and adverse social attitudes; family expectations
and pressure; resignation and acclimation to the lifestyle. In Mumbai, 95% of
the children of prostituted women become prostitutes. It is a cycle that can be
stopped only if others intervene and create alternatives, off ering hope in the
midst of a nightmare.

There is a young YWAM ministry doing just that. They are based in the Red
Light District in a simple room, which once was rented out as a brothel.
This one room used to hold 5 to 6 women a day as they worked their trade
side by side, separated only by curtains hung from the ceiling. This prison
has become a playground as the now-empty curtain rods support children
hanging from them in the pure joy of play. This room is now a place for the
children and ladies to join in meals, prayer, church, and education. Manna
House of Prayer is a center where women can fi nd real love, change takes
place, and destinies are renewed.
During our visit, we ask a beautiful 26 yr old Nepali woman, “Do you dream
of the future?” A fi rm, “No,” was her reply. “Whatever happens is it. My
life is almost fi nished; after death I will experience God’s peace and joy.”
As a friend of the staff she was in this simple room most days helping in
diff erent ways. Here she is more than just a prostitute. This day she cradles
and quiets a young boy who had been crying for hours until he found
peace in her arms. Listening to her as we all sat together on the fl oor, this
question came to mind, “What does redemption look like?” <<

Three full time staff work at Manna House to meet the needs of the ladies
and children physically, mentally, and spiritually. Abhay, the director,
spends time eating in the ladies’ houses, visiting them, and learning
their names. Simple acts of love, done with integrity, boldness, and excellence
can make all the diff erence. Manna House is becoming a place of redemption and
sustenance. The Lifeline Plus team had the opportunity to sit down with Abhay
for an interview.
LL+: How long have you been focusing on this area in Turbhe?
Abhay: Many years ago God showed me a vision of ladies standing at a corner
waiting for costumers. So I started going for prayer walks in the Red Light District
of Kamatipura. But it was in 2003 that we started focusing on the area where the
Manna House is today. We used to go and pray and visit diff erent ladies’ houses to
talk with them and pray for them. We were fi nding out how to start the ministry.
LL+: Now you are caring for around 20 children in your shelter daily. Do you fi nd
that the behavior of the children in the Manna House is diff erent than that of an
average child growing up in a ‘normal’ family setting?
Abhay: In a normal family, the child will grow up with the love of the mother and
father. But the children from the Manna House only have a single parent. They do
not have a father and are longing for a father’s love. This is a challenge.
We observe that even the mothers don’t really care for their children and just
focus on their job. Just recently there was another case of the mother leaving
her 6-month-old child behind. Nobody knows where she went. This is not an
exception. These children are not receiving love from anyone. Some mothers give
their children into the care of their pimps, who in turn do not love these children.
As a result we see rebellion in these children and a diffi culty to accept other
people’s love.
LL+: It sounds as if these children are just starving for love. I don’t know how
you manage with only 2 staff , Asha and Sarmila, to help you. How is the Manna
House received by the community?
Abhay: The Manna House is very warmly and happily received by the workers as
well as the pimps and the children. In the area itself it is always referred to as
being a school. People cherish that we teach the children in a loving way without
beating and threatening them but with love.

LL+: Are there a lot of sick children in the Red Light District of Turbhe?
Abhay: There are some children that are sick. Just recently we found out that little
Monsou is very sick. She is a 3-½ year old girl who has been diagnosed with HIV. When
we see this little girl, who has done nothing bad to contract this deadly virus and is
simply the victim of her parent’s way of life, it really breaks our hearts. For 10 months
now she has been coming to the Manna House and has played and sat with the other
children and with us; it’s so sad and shocking. We have another boy called Babu who is
also HIV+. We were able to bring him to a Christian hostel in Pune. When these little
children get sick it saddens our hearts, but we have seen especially the sick children
worshiping God and praying to Jesus. This is a comfort. And although they will die
sooner, we have the hope of seeing them one day in heaven.
LL+: What is your advice to other workers, who work in the same fi eld or are planning
to pioneer a similar ministry?
Abhay: My basic advice is to never forget that through God’s eyes we are all the same
whether we live in a Red Light District or in a good society. So for those who are
planning to or are already working in a Red Light District, I would recommend them
to be fully connected with the locals and never see themselves as more special. When
I go for ministry I don’t carry my own water but drink what is off ered to show that
I make no separation between us. Also when you go and show God’s love, do not
be upset with those who give rude answers. They don’t yet know any other way to
communicate. Only if we invest good into their lives can we eventually expect good in
return. Be patient.
It’s very important to make friendship with them. And then the way is open to reach
out to them. In the same way, if we don’t pursue a friendship with them, it is not
possible to reach them. Those that go to these kind of people need to respect them,
be friendly with them and not expect them to open up soon, but rather be very open
yourselves.
We need to show love, even if there is no love in return.
LL+: Thank you for so openly sharing your heart with us. I pray that you will continue
with your work and continue to change the lives of the people in the Turbhe Red Light
District, who are facing so much injustice.

Aseeah
Asee
ahShe is sitting with us, full
of life. She points to the
man selling samosa. We can
easily meet such a simple need
at the moment. She is three years
old, wearing a dirty dress that is far
too big and missing buttons. Does she
know that she doesn’t deserve this life?
Should we tell her? Her mom is dying, and
to look at her gaunt face, you know her time is
coming soon. This little girl plays easily with the
other children in the room; is her laughter the sound
of a future? She is so alive now. Can she be rescued
from the future of the Red Light District? Can she be
saved from following her mother’s footsteps and becoming a
prostitute? So many questions that cannot be answered in one
moment. She was birthed in the red light area, but she doesn’t
need to die here. She can be helped, have an education, know Jesus
and love. We watch, learn, and engage with her in the hope of saving
more children like this dirty, laughing child, a little girl named Aseeah.

Manna House is just one of the many YWAM
ministries meeting the needs of prostitutes
and their children. Each ministry has similar
stories worthy of sharing. If you are interested

As Dave Meyer puts it,
’If you will not run when you feel fear,
fear will run because it has seen faith.’
May you continue to run with your eyes fi xed
on our Lord. He’s in it with you!
In the face of diffi culty and persecution, these Kingdom workers have given new sight to the blind. Three years have passed
since Sanjeev and Rita, together with four other team members, pioneered a new Y base. These years have been fi lled with
loneliness, persecution, and personal losses. Yet they have also seen God’s guidance, breakthroughs, victories, and successes.
Sanjeev and Rita, freshly married, hoped to get a job transfer to a city they both love, but our job coordinator, our Master and
Lord, had a diff erent plan. These fellow Y-workers were sent to a small city that hides in the centre of our huge country.
Who can point out Bilaspur on the map? A city named after an old fi sher-lady, Bilasa, is now home to around 20 lakh people.
Here Sanjeev and Rita launched their new life with their team while they stayed with a local pastor. How nice
would it have been, if Sanjeev and Rita could have had their own fl at, but God had a plan.
There are thought to be around 2 crore blind people living in India today and
only a few of God’s workers serve and love them. This pastor in
Bliaspur organized a seminar for blind people. Sanjeev and
his team helped, and it was during this meeting with the
blind that God shook their hearts with the need among
these people. In obedience to God, they dared to do
something no other YWAMer has done so far- they
launched the fi rst blind DTS. This was no easy road they
were taking, and yet it was the right one. Speakers cancelled
upon hearing the students were blind, no landlord could at fi rst
be found who was willing to give his house to blind people, not one of the
students was able to pay the training fee…and the list goes on.
It was during this time of hardship and struggle that persecution was added. The students were verbally
abused by neighbors, and the Y staff came to their aid. After hours of shouting, Sanjeev was taken away to the police
station. As a result, the whole DTS had to be moved. Was God there with them in this time? Yes! And He brought meaning to
these great diffi culties and struggles by letting amazing things happen as a result of the move.
The majority of students successfully completed the DTS and experienced a change of heart from total helplessness and
dependency to an attitude of facing and accepting challenges. In addition, new ministries have come about. Signs and wonders
follow our friends, and people are experiencing that greatest miracle of all, New Birth. YWAM Bilaspur now runs a church with
70 members, is planning for another blind DTS, runs sewing classes for the underprivileged, and ministers to destitute children.
And all of this with merely 10 staff . But a mighty God orchestrates it all.
When asked whether he has thought of giving up his work in Bilaspur, Sanjeev replies: ‘Quitting? Honestly saying: many times!
But one thing I know is that this is God’s call for me, and I am not going to leave unless God kicks me out of Bilaspur.’

It’s 5 pm in Mumbai city. A man stands alone between a Mosque and a small perfume shop. People are moving around him, going from place to place, and some
men enter the place of prayer because the evening hour is near. But this man stands alone, watching and praying silently to his God. Feeling the time is right and
sensing the urging from the Holy Spirit, he approaches the two shop owners sitting nearby. He asks for their names and gives his, it’s the beginning of a good
friendship. The shopkeepers are Muslims living in one of Mumbai’s many Muslim districts. The man is a teacher of Holy Books, and these two shop owners can relate
to his words and life. This man is a Christian, working fulltime with YWAM. He is here, at this moment in the warm muggy evening, because God told him to go to this
community in order to meet two men. In the time spent sharing their lives this evening, deep bonds of friendship and respect are established.
A few weeks go by and the Christian man fi nds himself again between the Mosque and perfume shop. God has led him once more to share the love of Jesus in this place
and continue to build relationships. The shop owner, now a friend, welcomes him to sit and have chai. Muslim greetings of Assalamu Alaykum and wa Alaykum Assalam
are exchanged. The shop owner, between sips of chai, tells his visiting friend that he is worried about marriage. He is 40 yrs. old and still not married, a matter of great
concern within his community. The Christian teacher of spiritual books begins to share the Biblical view of marriage with his new friend. Using contextualized words, he
forms a picture of how God teaches man and wife to live in a marriage relationship. This topic then leads to another, the best example of love, the ultimate Bridegroom.
The man of God shares with his friend about the deep mercy of God, who sent his son Jesus, Isa-al-Masih, to earth for us. He explains that even in our weakness as
humans, Jesus is our strength. The shop owner listens intently, and by the time this visitor fi nishes his story, an eternal signifi cant decision is made. In the midst of
perfume bottles, next to the local mosque, a shop owner prays and accepts Jesus into his life.
Now they meet whenever possible. Over chai they talk about life, marriage, Jesus, and the Bible. Discipleship and lasting changes take time. But that is just what this
YWAMer has given as an off ering to his Savior - his time. Because of that, a shopkeeper’s life has been given a new future, a new hope, and the seeds of change are
being planted in a community. Following the example of our Christian brother, let us continually remember to be sensitive to God’s call to befriend our Neighbours. >>

My name is Arun Kumar. I am originally from Uttaranchal but have been working in Jaipur with Neighbor’s Ministry
for the past 5 years. Besides traveling, meeting people, and building friendship with
Neighbors, I serve on a leadership council and do the accounts for the base. My greatest
personal challenge is that I have had to work alone for a long time and have not had enough
support and encouragement. A lot of people think that it is boring and/or dangerous to
work among the Neighbors. This makes it extremely hard to recruit long-term people to join
me.
I often visit Neighbour families, share the gospel, and pray for their education, health, jobs,
etc. It takes time to reach the lost. I read their religious books so I am prepared to answer
their doubts and ask relevant questions. Overall I am investing my time in friendship
evangelism, and it’s slowly beginning to bear fruit. Now some other ministries and Churches
have even started to invite me to come and share about my ministry.
My vision is to start a school and recruit Christians to teach the Neighbour children to read
and write English. The local community has invited me to do something for the kids, but I
don’t have anyone to help me at the moment. I also want to do the Business As Ministry
(BAM) school and get into the export business with Jewellery, Handicraft, etc. More than
half of the handicraft workers in Jaipur are Neighbors, and there is a huge opportunity to
reach to them through business.
Right now I am reading Eff ective Biblical Counseling. Authors like John C. Maxwell and Philip
Yancey have challenged me. I enjoy jogging, playing cricket and football in my free time. <<

Stories
Described as the “fl esh trade” and “modern day slavery”, human traffi cking has become one of the most lucrative
and fastest growing criminal activities in the world. Persons, mostly women and children, are forced into
prostitution or domestic work after being tricked or sold, most likely by someone they know.
While human traffi cking is growing, some have taken responsibility for helping educate those most at risk and open
the door for dialogue among countries involved, including South Africa. The International Organization of Migration
(IOM) and representatives at the U.S. State Department, estimates are that between 40,000 and 100,000 people with
be traffi cked into and through South Africa in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In order to curb
this estimate, Tonya Stanfi eld and the team at Justice A.C.T.S. (Alliance of Christians against Traffi cking),
a YWAM ministry in Muizenberg, South Africa, have created an educational program called Traffi ck Proof
that is bringing awareness to South African communities and families.
“There hasn’t been one single time we have presented this material where there haven’t been stories of
encounters with traffi cking,” Stanfi eld says, “As we teach what traffi cking looks like, the families begin to
see the warning signs and share their stories with us.” Stanfi eld says that as many as 10 percent of those
she speaks to have had a close brush with traffi cking that was identifi ed through the program.
One community reported high school aged girls being recruited as models. Seven of them were chosen and no one
has seen them since. Young boys are recruited as football players, sent by their parents to sport camps and then not
seen again. Recent cases point to organ harvesting where an individual goes to a medical clinic for a minor symptom
and is returned to their family deceased and scarred. This is reality for refugees and the poor throughout South Africa.
However, since South Africa does not currently have legislation regarding human traffi cking, it is hard to get funding
and do the necessary large scale research needed to begin shutting down this web of crime. According to Tonya,
kidnapping or abuse are likely charges someone involved with traffi cking may be tried for, hindering accurate reporting
of criminal activity associated with human traffi cking. These lesser criminal trials can take up to six or seven years.
The Traffi ck Proof training program is becoming a valuable tool in identifying the scope of traffi cking in South Africa.
The program is a simple presentation that uses stories and pictures to teach people to identify human traffi cking, take
protective steps for their families and report suspicious activities. The Justice A.C.T.S. team trains volunteers to take the
program into townships and communities identifi ed to be at a high risk for traffi cking. There, they put a defi nition to
some of the experiences people have had with human traffi cking and empower them to speak up.
With the vast numbers of people expecting to be traffi cked in relation to the World Cup, Justice A.C.T.S. is focused on
training a portion of the coming YWAM volunteers to identify and prevent traffi cking and focus on prostitute/buyer
ministry.
