My grandmother would Christmas-shop for hours at kreisman's Department Store on the corner of Court Street in downtown Florence, Alabama. From there, she would move down a smidge to Roger's Department Store. For her, Christmas shopping was an art-form, a skill few actually possess.

I did not get that gene.

Sitting in the car waiting for hours does not sit well with an 8-year-old, so my granddaddy would drive me down to McFarland Park and the banks of the Tennessee River. We would talk about everything and nothing and just watch the current go by.

"That Big River will bring you in...and take you places you never thought you could go," I remember him saying as a towboat glided in front of us.

Granddaddy was right. And Big River has taken me places I didn't think I had the skills to go. Billy and I started Life on the Water magazine in the corner of one of our bedrooms in Spring 2007. My desk was a pressboard top with screwed-in legs. It began as a newsletter for our yacht brokerage, a publication that would promote the things to do and see in the South…on the water.

I am tickled to announce that a very respected publisher just steps away from McFarland Park and the Big River will take the helm of Life on the Water beginning in 2015. Allen Tomlinson understands the soul of North Alabama and the stories that Southerners want to read. His publications, No’Ala Huntsville and No’Ala Shoals have grown to be premier publications that our region deserves.

You’ll still see the writers and photographers you’ve come to enjoy. But now, your magazine will get even better.

From the beginning, Billy and I wanted to bring people to the water for a weekend, a day, or just a few minutes a week. We are a better people if we live life on the water. We are blessed to have had the many people dropped from heaven to help us grow Life on the Water. And the vision we share with No’Ala Press gives me goosebumps at the possibilities for the future.

Now then . . . we’ll see you on the river.

To really get into the spirit of the holidays, why not hunt the food you prepare? Sawtooth Plantation is in Russell County, Alabama on the banks of Hurtsboro Creek. Owner John Cassimus said goodbye to the rat race and started Sawtooth in 2007. The former Alabama football player’s mom started Zoe’s Kitchen and to his credit, he created the sushi restaurant sensations Jinsei Sushi and Maki Fresh.

But John always wanted to live in the middle of nowhere and hunt his own food. And now he does. he world looks different by wa-ter. It feels simpler. Less cluttered. And it’s calm.

But Ron Lowery brings us a view of our majestic Tennessee River like no onehas. He soars right over it and captures the aura and magnificence like no other photographer has done before.

Ron Lowery is an aerial photographer who went one step further. He shares the images of the Tennessee River by air in his book Tennessee River: Sparkling Gem of the South.

Growing up in Harrison, Tennessee near Chattanooga, Lowery became passionate about photography as a hobby. His career spans industrial, photojournalism, commercial and underwater projects.

But Ron Lowery is easily bored. He wanted to do more. And he wanted to test his abilities.

“I built the plane myself,” Ron told us while visiting Huntsville’s Botanical Garden where he recently held a seminar for photographers.

“I call the plane CLOUD CHASeR and it’s basically a one thousand pound plane with a 200 horsepower engine. She’ll fly 2000 feet per minute and can climb 1800 feet in one minute.” He finished CLOUD CHASeR in February 2000 and set out on a journey to follow the Lewis & Clark trail by plane in celebration of the bicentennial of their expedition. That journey is chronicled in aerial photography in Lowery’s book Chasing Lewis & Clark Across America.

“It was a 1400-mile trip. What strikes me is the ever-changing scenery. Being above everything, you can see the transition. It’s like a kaleidoscope,” Ron tells us. But his trips are not just snap

shots from the plane for hours. His wife Sue was in an Rv travelling by road every step of the way. Sometimes they would stay a few days in an area Lowery deemed to be photo-rich.

“Lighting is everything in photography. Determining the precise time when lighting will be best is critical.”

The Tennessee River project would take Ron and Sue Lowery through four states. knoxville, Chattanooga, Huntsville, Florence, Paducah. The aerial photography is breathtaking. But it was the smaller communities that thrilled Ron above the river.

“The feeling of Old South and tradition and community. It’s a closeness that you can certainly see by driving through these towns. But from the air, you feel it.

What’s next for Ron and Sue Lowery? “This inspired me to want to explore all the rivers. They wander and yet they connect all of us,” Ron tells us as he proudly flipped through the pages of Tennessee River: Sparkling Gem of the South.

n historic milemarker about a Civil War sniper stands near Land Between the Lakes in western kentucky. A retired U.S. Marine Corps infantry soldier and para-chutist who served in korea and vietnam silently reads about this intriguing character…and has to know more.

Lt. Col. Tom Mckenney researched the subject of that milemarker for over 15 years. It was an amazing story of a common man’s strife in a Civil-War South.

THE STORY OF JACk HINSON…In February 1862, Jack Hinson was a prominent, well-respected man in Stewart County, Tennessee. He lived on The Land Between the Lakes, which lies north to south for about 60 miles in the western part of kentucky and Tennessee where the Tennessee River and Cumberland Rivers meet.

“Jack Hinson and his community were like mountaineers without the mountains. Land Between the Lakes is a peninsula. At the time, there were no bridges coming into or off of it. These people learned to be self-reliant, work hard and to be very suspicious of strangers,” says Mckenney.

Hinson never wanted war but that changed when two of his sons were dragged through the courthouse square as an example of what Union forces would do if citizens resisted their authority.

At almost 60 years old, Hinson wanted revenge. With no formal military training, he vowed to get even. Hinson left his family and entered the forests of the west side of the Tennessee River across from Johnsonville, Tennessee which was Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s base of supply.

Completely alone and cut off from the rest of the world, Jack Hinson killed over 100 Union soldiers and recorded the confirmed deaths on the barrel of his .50 caliber rifle, custom-made for long-range accuracy. He even managed to capture an armed Union transport and destroyed all the supplies, by himself.

“This is one of the most extreme examples of effective guerilla warfare. It is the story of one man being torn apart by war. He essentially lost 7 of 10 sons during this conflict. I greatly admire his independence. He expected nothing from others and feared no one but God. Hinson and the people of the Land Between the Lakes region were not interested in matters beyond their rivers. Their lives were so completely in tune with each other and nature. But they did not like intruders. The land and waters was their lifeline to everything,” Mckenney tells us as he proudly reflects on the 15-year journey of writing the book.

RESEARCH AND THE RIFLEMckenney’s research began with the only lead he knew. Bubbling Springs was the Hinson family’s plantation, just under 1200 acres three miles southwest of Dover, Tennessee. He traveled the circuit of county libraries and historical societies in the area, ending his search in Houston County where he met Francis Hinson, the widow of Dudley Hinson, and great-grandson of Jack Hinson.

“Francis Hinson was key in helping me with the book ultimately.” Meeting Hinson led Mckenney to a family in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The rifle that Hinson used in his one-man war had been in a closet since 1865.

“The rifle is the main attraction when we host our talks and book-signings,” says Mckenney.

“This book would not have been possible if not for the passion and dedication of the small county libraries and the priceless treasures we have in our historical societies. They really care about preserving history and know that we can learn great lessons from it,” Mckenney says.

ANOTHER STORY THAT HAS TO BE TOLDMckenney’s latest book will be out in Spring 2015. The Trampled Rose chronicles the suffering of the common man, the civilians in the South that suffered so greatly in the War for Southern Independence.

With The Trampled Rose, Mckenney hopes to show that the war fought below the Mason-Dixon line is still valid and important to the people of the South.

“One thing I make clear in the latest book is that the Civil War was in no way civil. This suffering took place from the Atlantic to the Mississippi River and included the destruction of farms, livestock and entire families. very few books have been published on this ugly side of the War Between the States,” Mckenney explains.

in western North Carolina, has been

chose raw materials that would endure

with as little maintenance as possible, while

keeping the family’s budget in mind. The

roof, for example, mimics the slate tiles

of an old Bavarian rooftop but with much

less weight while matching slate’s inherent

longevity. Soellner chose acid-washed

aerated concrete tiles to deliver an aging

appearance, matching the rooftops he

photographed several years ago in old towns

in Southern Germany.

On the remainder of the house’s exterior,

Soellner incorporated both local grey granite

and tan Tennessee sandstone, for which he

hand-designed a specific look for the stone

mason to implement.

“We take rock detailing seriously,”

Soellner says. “Rock work looks best

when the hand of man is evident in its

organization.”

Large rock masonry also clads the

sloping column piers that support huge

rear porches and a porte-cochere on the

front of the lodge style home. The slope is a

nod to the home’s architectural style, which

Soellner pegs as “muscular” Arts and Crafts.

Colored concrete pavers and thick flagstone

provide a substantive driveway to the porte-

cochere, which is the largest in western

North Carolina, according to Soellner.

“It is the size of a small church and even

feels like one with its double dormers,” he

says. “Four to six cars can fit under it, which

is perfect for entertaining in this Alpine

rainforest climate.”

Soellner also paid close attention to the

sitting of the house, using specific compass

“I think Mr. Wright would approve,” says Soellner, who in the past worked for one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s apprentices, architect Nils Schweizer. “The views become art framed by the architecture.”

the house toward views of Lake Toxaway,

about a mile away. This orientation enables

the view to be framed by glass windows no

matter where the homeowner walks.

Working with the neighbors and using

Google earth, he located and removed

a handful of view-blocking trees and

vegetation to provide optimum views for

the homeowners. By working with the land,

Soellner was able to address the street,

mountains, and lake, fitting the home into

the landscape while providing the best

views possible in all directions.

Inside the house, the views aren’t the

only breathtaking feature. Massive timbers

and “muscular” architectural features

appear inside, too, in the form of wooden

ceiling beams, large timber railings, grand

truss guard rails, sliding barn doors, and

to-the-ceiling stone fireplaces. Heart pine

floors warm the spaces even further. Their

dull satin varnish, a finish that is more

scratch resistant than polyurethane, is

a rich counterpoint to glossy, gleaming

granite countertops. All of the features are

worked into a design Soellner calls “timeless

elegance,” a fitting aesthetic for a heritage

home.

“We purposefully exclude things such as

colors and shapes that people can use to

date a design to a specific era,” he says.

Soellner also prepared features behind

the walls to provide “aging in place”

capabilities the family can call into use

later if needed, such as reinforced areas

that can accommodate handrails and a

wheelchair friendly shower entrance. These

features are standard in the firm’s designs

and add an unexpected benefit in a home

that is anticipated to house many different

generations, perhaps even at one time.

There’s not much that’s rustic about this

showstopper mountain lodge, but don’t

be fooled by its expansive elegance. It is a

warm and richly comforting environment

to call home.

signature square bottle and black label was a stage prop for the Rolling Stones. A shopkeeper in Osaka, Japan sits down after a long day…to his favorite shot of Jack Daniels. Worldwide sales of bourbon has soared in

the last three years and Jack Daniels leads

the way. It’s selling in big numbers in coun-

tries that are discovering the smooth taste of

Tennessee sipping whiskey. It’s been so good,

that Brown Forman, the parent company

based in Louisville, kentucky, is investing in

a $100 million expansion…

In a town of less than 6500 people.

And a county that is dry. You cannot buy

Jack Daniels in Moore County.

The phenomenon of Jack Daniels and Lynchburg, Tennessee is in the water.

is only 10 miles away.

But the waters of Lynchburg that are the

most magical are hidden. The distillery sits

on 250 acres and the Cave Springs is lime-

stone rock and calcium carbonate, a natural

filter that makes the water so clean, clear and

iron-free. 300 to 400 gallons of water flows

per minute from this source that goes under-

ground for about 1 ½ miles. The spring is a

constant flow and temperature of 56 degrees

Every Christmas, the employees of Jack Daniels Distillery build a Barrel Tree. It takes two days and around 11 men.


Once the tree is finished, Lynchburg and the Distillery host the Barrel Tree Lighting.

old-fashioned way.


This year’s Lighting of the Barrel Tree is Saturday, December 6th.


The drink is Jack Daniels. The magic is in the water… and the people of Lynchburg.

They are friendly, welcoming and warm.

We visited at Christmastime and it was magi-

cal. The town square surrounds the Moore

County Courthouse, not unlike hundreds of

small towns in the South. It is the hub of all

things Lynchburg. My sons couldn’t believe

the long conversations they were having with

the townspeople. As we walked out of Baker’s

Antiques and variety, my youngest asked if

I knew the store owner. “No, people here are

just that friendly,” I told him.

We had to eat at Miss Mary BoBo’s…because

that’s just what you do when you visit Lynch-

burg. everything served family-style in an

historic home just off the square, the food is

superb but the company is even better. You

will be seated beside someone from some-

where else. Oddly, our table had visitors from

Richmond, virginia and Boulder, Colorado.

One more stroll through downtown and we

stopped in Dixie Outfitters. He was a walking

history book for Lynchburg and Moore County.

But when he pointed out one of his favor-

ite items in the store, it occurred to me what

makes the people here so special. It was an

advertisement for Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 from

1976, the nation’s bicentennial year, that was

simply a black background with white letters

and red and blue accents that said:

They are independent. They love their free-

dom, adore their family, worship God . . . and

enjoy their whiskey in a way that’s more pride

than indulgence.

It’s Christmastime!

Let the parties and parades, socials and lunches

begin! And that means it’s Dirty Santa time!

Even though it’s my favorite game in the whole world,

finding that perfect gift for under $10 can be tricky.

The Dirty Santa Dilemma

Rule #1. You cannot buy the same gift for all occasions. You just can’t. There’s gifts for my marina friends that I would never give to my church friends…You know i’m telling the truth.

OFFICE PARTY. These are eb’s co-workers so he has to live with them 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This gift must be practical, useful and logical. kitchen items, outdoor decorations, or movie theater gift cards are perfect.

MARINA FRIENDS. Well that’s easy. Anything nautical or boat-y…or liquor works great for any of these folks. One year, my Dirty Santa gift was a rug that said “Take off your shoes or else.” It was stolen so many times I thought it would start a fist fight among the group. everybody wanted that rug. Any bottle of liquor with a man’s name on it is a safe bet for boaters. Do not let the men plan this party. All of the gifts will be tools, lines, cleaning products or Sta-Bil fuel treatment.

MY BRIDgE CLUB. Frilly, smelly or girly makes a perfect Dirty Santa gift for this crew. But it can get out of hand. Marge Ann gifted a hair band on which she had hot-glued Christmas ornaments and garland. It was the ugliest thing I had ever seen. But she had been so sick that year and there was no way that I would hurt her feelings. So I wore the hairband all over town. You could hear the laughs coming from the grocery store

for miles. Then, as I was getting in the car, I broke every ornament on my head. I picked chards of Christmas ornaments out of my hair for three weeks.

THE CHURCH gROUP. This is a bit tougher. Baby Jesus or Young Jesus. Nativity scene with the shepherds …or without. And absolutely nothing Santa Claus, elves or reindeer. Sadly, some of the gift items we have to choose from are rather, well, ugly. I spent a good month searching for the right gift for our church group’s White elephant Party. (They wouldn’t call it Dirty Santa.) I almost bought hand towels with angels but that just seemed wrong. I found nativity cookie cutters but the thought of eating a Wise Man…that is twisted.

I finally settled on ceramic coasters with the Star of Bethlehem only to be upstaged by our organist who made donations in each of our names to the Rescue Mission. After that, we ate pie and abruptly went home.

FRuIT JELLIESEveryone remembers these at Christmastime. The ingredients can be adjusted to your taste and consistency preference.

WHAT TO gET:white sugarunflavored gelatinnatural or homemade apple saucefrozen or fresh organic berries {or just about any other fruit}

HOW TO:Puree fruit in food processor until smooth then add applesauce to taste. Stir in gelatin and mind the consistency as it will begin to solidify immediately. Pour the mixture into a plastic lined pan to the desired thickness. After the mixture sets (usually a couple of hours, but it will depend on thickness) it can be cut into desired shapes and enjoyed. For more sweetness, toss cut pieces in a bowl with sugar.

STAINED GLASS CANDYBeautiful, edible glass candy. Yes, please! This recipe is fun and easy to make. Let the kids help and have fun with colors, flavors and designs.

WHAT TO gET:1 cup water3 ½ cups white sugar1 ½ cups light corn syrup1 tbsp vanilla, lemon, peppermint, walnut or almond extractfood coloring set with assorted colorsa candy thermometer

HOW TO:Combine water, sugar and corn syrup in a large, heavy saucepan. Stir constantly over high heat until sugar is fully dissolved then stop stirring and bring to a boil. Boil until candy thermometer reaches 310° F then remove from heat. Once bubbling stops, stir in flavoring of choice and if one solid color or base color is desired, stir in food coloring as well. Lightly grease large baking sheet that will allow the mixture to spread out and be no more than ¼ thick. Drop in food coloring sporadically and carefully swirl designs in mixture while hot. Cool for 45 minutes in fridge, then crack into pieces and enjoy! Also try pouring hot mix into cookie cutters for fun shapes!

TENNESSEE WHISKEY BALLSWe couldn’t miss the opportunity to highlight Jack Daniels in a recipe. This one was shared with us by Rebecca Moore from Tullahoma, Tennessee during our interview for the Lynchburg feature.

2 cups chopped pecans toasted 1 box ( 12 oz. ) vanilla wafers finely crushed 2 cups powdered sugar plus extra1/2 cup baking cocoa 1/4 cup corn syrup 1/3 cup Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey

Use any kind of nuts if you don’t like pecans. I also sometimes add a bit of finely chopped coconut or chopped maraschino cherries

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Blend well with hands to form and roll into 1 inch balls. Roll balls in powdered sugar.

Makes 5 dozen - store air tight.

CROCKPOT CANDYWhen you need easy but impressive for a sweet gift to your neighbors, try this recipe from our publisher’s sister, Sadonna Smith of Waynesboro, Tennessee.

Spray your crock pot with canola oil spray. Put these ingredients in your crockpot in this order:

1 jar (16 oz) DRY ROASTED peanuts UNSALTED1 jar (16 oz) DRY ROASTED peanuts SALTED1 package (120 oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips1 bar (4 oz) German chocolate, broken into pieces3 lbs. (or 2 planks) White Bark, broken into pieces

Cover and cook 3 hours on low. DO NOT REMOVE THE LID. Turn off and cool slightly. Mix this thoroughly and drop by teaspoon-fulls onto waxed paper. Let them dry completely. Makes 170 pieces.
