Lake Grace Golf Club held their annual dinner and presentation night on Friday 8th October; it was an opportunity to ‗frock up‘ for the ladies while the men took their ties out for their annual outing. Terri and Helen had excelled themselves by injecting some party atmosphere with the decorations, Steve had stocked the bar, the Catholic Ladies had cooked up a storm and Craig had brought out his very extensive collection of 70‘s music.

Following plenty of conversation the dinner bell was rung with an invitation extended to Nick Maalouf to say Grace, but ‗he deferred to the expert‘, Father Gayan

who was no doubt quite happy to discard the tea towel and do his bit. The Catholic Ladies (and men) excelled themselves with a fantastic meal. Thank you also to Heather Bell for running the bar and being Skipper for the night.

Once the meal had settled President Craig Reeves and Captain Rex Walker got down to the business end of the evening. Helen Hunt cleaned up in the Ladies taking home the Ladies A Grade, the Ladies Longest Drive and the Ladies Eclectic. Michelle Lay was runner-up for the Ladies A Grade and swears she‘s going to get Helen one day.

Editorial We are still taking names for the Licensed Manager and RSA workshop that will be being held at the Lake Grace

Community Resource Centre on the 22nd and 23rd October. Please ring the CRC on 9865 1470 if you have any questions.

Things have gone ahead with our NEC broadband grant for seniors; the furniture has been put together, the computers have been connected...we just need to get the internet glitches sorted and we‘ll be ready for action. The computers don‘t have a huge range of software and the emphasis is on wordpad (this is compatible with word), gmail and internet explorer.

For those who have been wondering about when to water we have the schedule on page 33. Lake Grace‘s watering days HAVEN‘T changed, we can still water twice a week as we don‘t fall in the zone that has been restricted further. Don‘t ask me why, I‘m just passing the message on.

We have arrived at a pricing schedule for the Digital Projector; it will cost $30 per day for members, $40 per day for non profit groups and $60 per day for everyone else. We have tried to keep the prices as affordable as possible but need to cover replacement costs. One site I found on the net charged $90 per day for digital projector hire.

For anyone who hasn‘t filled out the ‗age friendly community‘ questionnaire, the Shire want YOUR input, especially if you‘re over 55. If you aren‘t over 55 it doesn‘t mean you can‘t fill out the questionnaire, there just may be some questions that don‘t apply to you.

The Lake Grace CRC will be hosting a FREE simulcast concert of the Berliner Philharmoniker live direct from Perth Concert Hall. This will be at 8pm on Sunday 14th November. If you are interested in attending please let me know, you will be able to bring along your own refreshments and nibbles.

There will be a Military Exhibition and Pioneer Women display in Gnowangerup from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th November at the Gnowangerup Memorial Hall. Photographs, Information and Memorabilia sought. Contact Merilyn Todhunter on 0418 418036 or [email protected] if you would like more information.

Westpac have listened to their customers concerns regarding Lake Grace branch hours and Bank Manager, Raelene Weaver is very pleased to announce that after 10 years Westpac will be reintroducing extended hours to the Lake Grace branch; effective from Monday 4th October 2010. The reduction in hours was a very unpopular decision within the community, so the turnaround has been embraced, with Westpac‘s customers entering the building on the first day of extended hours just to thank staff for their hard work in making these changes happen. This is a fantastic milestone for not only Westpac and their customers but the Lake Grace Community in general. Westpac takes customer feedback seriously and acts on comments wherever possible. Staff of the Lake Grace branch are thrilled with the new announcement that they can now give their customers more access to the bank. Our new hours are 9.30am to 4pm Monday - Thursday and 9.30am to 5pm Friday. For further information please phone 9890 2733. The Westpac branch celebrated this milestone

by cooking a free sausage sizzle with any donations going to the RFDS. They would like to say a special thank you to Lake Grace Meat Supply for donating the sausages and are pleased to announce that they raised a total of $92.40 for RFDS. The branch staff thank you for your feedback and look forward to continuing to give you 10 out 10 for service.

Gertie O‘Neill was born Gertrude Elizabeth Cannon on the 20th May 1929 in Maylands Hospital, where her Grandmother was matron at the time. Nanna was a daughter for Bertha Egerton-Latham and James Herbert Cannon and younger sister to Jim and Pat. Nanna grew up south of Lake Grace right on the lake and went to the South Lake Grace School. She was an accomplished horse rider and rode the 8 miles across the lake every morning to the Little Red School, following school she had the daily chore of washing her horse down. Initially, applications for correspondence were rejected. However, through the persistence of her mother the applications were finally successful and Nanna continued her education under correspondence. Nanna‘s mother and both grandmothers were all matrons at the Kukerin Nursing Post and for a time, when her mother was relieving there, Nan also went to school in Kukerin. Nanna was a very curious child and loved to sneak into the hospital rooms to try and catch a glimpse of the wounded farmers as they were carried into the hospital. Perhaps this was her inspiration and she began her nursing career at the Lake Grace Hospital with her close friend Elsie Griffin. Towards the end of the War, Nanna was nursing old Michael O‘Neill who mentioned he had a charming young son he was sure she would like… (and she did). Nanna first met this charming lad, George O‘Neill, at Harvey‘s Lake. After a stint nursing in Kalgoorlie she came home and Georgie and Nanna became engaged. They were married on her birthday in 1948 in Lake Grace followed by a reception in Kukerin. This was the beginning of a truly wonderful and loving partnership. Georgie often confessed to the love of his life that he married her for her beautiful olive skin… to which she often replied…‘Well I married you for your body‘…but yes… Nanna had married the love of her life. Some months later, Nanna gave birth to Bryon John who sadly passed away a few days later. However, over the following years they were blessed with four well behaved, gorgeous, beautiful, talented and charming daughters …….hang on a minute… this is not meant to be in here?….mmm…mum, auntys….this is Nanna‘s eulogy….not yours… They went on to have four daughters…Kerry, Vonnie, Di and Vicki. These independent, and probably not so well behaved daughters were raised in a loving environment by Georgie and Nanna on the Jinarnin Waters property at Tarin Rock. Nanna was NOT your typical housewife. On the farm she became involved in every aspect of farming life. This included driving the tractor on nightshift in the freezing cold to give Georgie a rest and working the sheep in the yards and paddocks. Together they built a successful, self sufficient farm, with a menagerie of animals, an abundance of fruit trees and a

massive vegetable garden. Apparently, Nanna was a crack shot with the gun. Legend has it that she blew the head of a number of snakes with a 410. Nanna was an amazingly creative cook. She cooked from the heart… not from recipes. Her dishes were homely and delicious. I can still taste her zucchini slice and pea and ham soup. Unfortunately Nanna‘s original recipes were not handed down… at least her daughters had an excuse. Nanna and Georgie did everything together and were blessed with a wide circle of wonderful friends. Over the years Nanna has told us many stories of coming home from football with the Griffin‘s, Pearce's and the Mouly mob. Lighting bonfires on the side of the road, singing and talking over a few beers and heading home in the early hours of the morning…and they think our generation‘s bad! Many late nights were also spent with the Bennett's on the farm and holidaying in Augusta. The Tarin Rock Tennis Club was an integral part of Nanna and Georgie‘s life…you all know who you are – you were not only neighbours, you were friends. Nanna loved a party and the party loved Nan. She was often the first to arrive and the last to leave. Her laughter could be heard from miles away. After much soul searching, Nanna and Georgie sold the farm in 1976 although they kept 300 acres as a hobby farm. In 1977 they built a house in Lake Grace and every day travelled out to the farm where they ran cross-bred Suffolk sheep and a Windamere pony stud. Nanna and Georgie also purchased a small property at Burekup near Bunbury. Their little orange orchard and a few sheep kept Nanna and Georgie active and busy. Burekup was a magnet for the entire family to congregate and relax. An old shed on the farm was converted into living quarters and apparently Nanna was quite the electrician… double adaptors on double adaptors on double adaptors. A sparkies nightmare!!! During these years Musso and Roma Bairstow spent many a musical evening with Nanna and Georgie. Their first grandchild, Aaron, was born in 1975, followed by Dean in 1976. Over the following years they were blessed with 10 more grandchildren: Tahryn in 1982, Shannan in 1984, Kael in 1985, Courtney and Eugene in 1987, Ashton in 1989, Tristan and Tia in 1990, Lachlan in 1991 and Jordan in 1992. Having 12 grandchildren gave both Nanna and Georgie a renewed

lease on life. Not only did they dote proudly on each new addition to the family, but they also had to acquire some new parenting skills which involved the biggest wooden spoon us grandies had ever seen. Nevertheless, Nanna, a sweetie herself, always kept her famous lolly jar on the top shelf of the pantry. A useful tool to keep us all in line. She had a few strict rules though…only two lollies each and NO double dipping… However, someone could always distract Nanna, the designated decoy. Nanna and Georgie somehow had time to nurture a beautiful garden in Lake Grace that won them much acclaim and many awards. This also included a magnificent vegetable patch and an array of fruit trees. They also embarked on some overseas travelling including New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and a cruise around Indonesia. In 1994 Nanna lost her soul mate Georgie after a long battle with cancer. In true form, her courage and strength triumphed and she made a conscious effort to live life to the full, and in the following years her life revolved around her family. Nanna loved the warm weather and being outdoors. She would often fly to Port Hedland or Darwin to visit

her daughters. She loved walking along the beach with Kerry and the dogs or shopping in the markets with Diane. Her trips to Perth with Von involved long walks through Kings Park, Araluen and the historical 10th Lighthorse Trail in Yanchep. She was equally as happy being out with Vicki on the farm, lending a helping hand with cooking and gardening or yabbying with the grandies. She also loved to join us raiding the mulberry and fig trees… but the rule was - you could only wear your undies if you climbed the mulberry tree, so of course Nanna stayed firmly on the ground. Not only was Nanna close to her daughters, but she also shared a special relationship with each of her son- in-laws, Ian, Simon, Mike and Kelly, who were affectionately called the outlaws. They loved to playfully stir Nanna during conversations over dinner and a few drinks. Nanna always gave as good as she got. Nanna was coerced into some very funny and adventurous activities. Whether it be camping at Cable beach or on the Gibb River road, canoeing down the Murchison River, or mud crabbing with her grandsons in Port Hedland. No complaints from Nan about the hard beds, the leaking tent, the rough and rocky tracks… she was always young at heart.

Remember when Nanna joined us on our trip around Australia? As she got off the bus in Huendon, she looked up to find that we had strapped her seat to the roof-rack, and Nanna… in true form, climbed on top of the landcruiser, sat on the seat, and asked for a beer. Remember our summer swimming lessons? Tris and Jordie would come down to Nanna‘s every summer and after our lessons in the freezing cold water, Nan greeted us with a big hug, a warm shower and yummy food to eat while we curled up in the poolroom to watch a video. Remember when Lachy was born? Nanna took charge of the 5 ankle biters while dad was in hospital with mum. We lost Ashton and panic set in for a few hours until Nanna found him fast asleep under the bed. The following day Nanna took us all to the zoo with our cousins. Bedlam continued and Nanna was heard to say… ‗I‘d rather be in the lion‘s cage right now!‘ With mum and dad out of action, Nanna put on a brave face and drove the 5 kids all the way back to Lake Grace in the Land Cruiser… (NO treats for us!) Tris and Jordie, do you remember the day when Nanna and Aunty Kerry took you for an outing in the city, and lost you at the lifts? Lucky they found you before your mother found out.

Aaron and Dean, do you remember when you went camping with Nanna at Wittenoom Gorge? While Nanna and Georgie were sleeping in their tent, you snuck in and pulled the plugs on their air mattresses. Or the massive fruit fight you guys had with all the fresh fruit in Nanna‘s backyard…We heard she wasn‘t happy! Eugene and Tia, do you remember Nanna‘s visits to Darwin and the fun you had dragging her through the wildlife park… Your favourite! You ran Nanna ‗ragged‘ and had to cool her off in the springs on the way home. And memories of the Mindil Beach Night Markets, feasting on exotic food as the sun set over the water. Whenever we were sick, we made sure it was at school (not home) so Nanna could pick us up and spoil us for the day with flat lemonade and other treats. She made the most amazing cooked breakfasts for anyone who stayed with her, which included her famous bubble and squeak. Nanna loved to watch the hockey in Lake Grace, sitting in the car with her mates Pat and Elsie, sipping on coffee (or what we thought was coffee) and chatting about everything but hockey. Tah used to enjoy taking Nanna to hockey with her, where she would tell countless stories of her life with Georgie and their love for the farm. In the last few years of her life Nanna suffered from the effects of Alzheimer's but this never stopped her from continuing to enjoy life. She never stood still for longer than 5 minutes, always doing something to keep busy whether it was in the garden, visiting friends for coffee or walking her much loved dog Rifle. These were sad times and funny times. We still blame Nanna for voting Kevin Rudd in – she tried to vote three times… and Rifle certainly got fed a lot. During this time she became a Great Grandmother to Nate in 2008 and Emma in 2010. She also took pride in watching her grand daughter Courtney get married on the farm in 2009. Nanna touched all our lives in so many ways, she was Nanna to her grandies, Mum to her daughters, Gertie to her ‗sons‘ and friends, and Aunty Gert to so many others. How do you say goodbye to a Nan who gave the best hugs in the world …whose home was warm and welcoming to everybody? How do you say goodbye to the most kind, generous and fun-loving mother and friend anyone could wish for… whose spirit was so full of life it radiated warmth? How do you say goodbye to someone you love? Nanna you are now reunited with your soul mate Georgie, Rest peacefully now.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

A number of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been noted in the district recently.

This is a contagious viral infection commonly affecting children and infants.

Symptoms include blisters on the tongue, hands and feet as well as fever, vomiting, sore throat and drowsiness.

It is recommended that affected children be kept home from school or day care until blisters have dried up.

The condition is usually mild and symptoms last about a week.

Fever can be controlled with Panadol or Nurofen, but if parents are concerned they should contact their doctor, pharmacist, hospital or Health Direct on 1800 022 222.

First Past the Post The Bushby family were first past the post in Kulin‘s Tin Horse Highway competition for 2010. Congratulations to Jane Bushby and Rhiannon Wallace for creating the magnificent mare and foal that won first prize of $1,000 in this year‘s competition, announced at the Freebairn Recreation Centre on Friday 1st October at the official opening of the Kulin Bush Race weekend.

Jane and Rhiannon made four draft horses previously, two are on the 101 Gate Road to Harrismith the other two are at the farm house which stands near Jane‘s first art work, ‗The Sun Flower‘. After Barry Gangell had seen the draft horses on the 101 Gate Road, Jane received a phone call from Barry‘s wife Wendy (a committee member of the Kulin Bush Races), asking if they would like to create an entry for this year‘s competition. Immediately the creative ideas started to flow.

In keeping with the racing theme, Rhiannon and Jane set about creating a horse in motion. The idea of a mare and her foal cantering appealed to them both. Watching Jane‘s horse Reynard cantering gave Rhiannon the understanding of how the mane and tail moved with the

horse in motion, creating a very powerful visual effect. These horses have evolved from the unpainted originals to a more refined painted sculpture.

―We feel a great sense of satisfaction in the accomplishment that two women could create these massive horses. We both learnt to weld, bend pipe, pop rivet, cut steel and tin with angle grinders and spray paint‖, said Rhiannon.

Lake Grace residents are invited to keep a look out for next year's event and have a go at creating something to add. Jane is not the first person from Lake Grace to enter, a few years back an entry from the Youth Advisory Council also took out a prize.

Tourism WA has recognized Kulin's horses as a major tourist attraction and sponsors the competition to ensure the horse numbers keep growing. Kulin had an exceptional race weekend with record crowds as well as the added attraction of a visit from the 2010 Melbourne Cup Touring Group. This was well received with hundreds of visitors taking the opportunity to have their photo taken with the $150,000 cup.

It‘s been an interesting few weeks assisting other sub-districts with events such as the Kukerin Burn Outs and Creek Bed Racing and the Kulin Bush Races. There can be no doubt that these events not only assist the local communities with much needed funds to support local projects but that they also provide a fantastic social outlet which is so important, particularly during difficult times. Now if we could just eliminate the odd few idiots that come with a bad attitude and/or can‘t handle their drink, we‘d all be much happier. As interesting as it was it‘ll be nice to stay in our own area for a few weekends and catch up with a couple of local issues.

Summer Sports: - Responsible Service of Alcohol:

Pubs, Clubs & Holders of Occasional Licences: With the summer sports about to get underway it would be remiss of me not to remind everyone that the authorities no longer take breaches of liquor laws and regulations lightly so please be vigilant. Sporting clubs and local hotels can be so important to regional communities and for that reason everyone should try to ensure they don‘t leave their club or pub open to prosecution and/or penalty. On many occasions the local pub will help sponsor local sporting teams. I can confirm a story that appeared in the West Australian Newspaper recently that a regional hotel in this State was fined $10,000 for serving liquor to a 16 year old. The protests of the licensee, that it‘s difficult to identify underage persons, fell on deaf ears, so I again advise you to be careful and to police yourselves in this regard. By that I simply mean that if you‘re an underage person don‘t put your club or pub at risk by asking to be served liquor; if you‘re a parent or club official don‘t allow a known underage person to even ask for a drink containing alcohol; if you‘re directly involved in bar service don‘t serve any person liquor unless you are satisfied that they are legally entitled to be served – which includes matters of age and sobriety. Random checks of licensed premises including Occasional License Holders will be carried out during the spring & summer months so please ensure there are no breaches and that the behaviour of your clientele is such that it won‘t attract our attention and/or make your venue a target.

Gophers for the Elderly / Disabled I‘ve been asked several times since arriving here about the rules and regulations governing the use of Gophers. Questions such as: Can I use it on the footpath? Am I

allowed to use the road? If allowed to use the road which side of the road should I use? Can I use it in shopping centres / precincts? What road rules and regulations do I have to observe? How fast can I go? etc etc. Hopefully here are most of the answers: When using such devices you are considered under the Road Traffic Act as a ‗Pedestrian‘. With that in mind you should at the very least adopt and apply all of the care and precautions, and obey such regulations, that you would if you were a pedestrian. Provided you don‘t exceed 10kph you may use your gopher on footpaths, in shopping centres, on shared paths and across roads, and generally in all public places. Just the same as a pedestrian you should use the footpath if one is available but if not you could use the road the same as if going for a walk. If you were using the road it is advisable to move along on the kerb side so that you are facing the oncoming traffic and make yourself as visible as possible. As always be defensive in your actions because we all know that not every motorist will obey the road rules. If there are any other questions please don‘t hesitate to contact me. (And finally for the lady who asked me how fast she was allowed to go, I hope you enjoyed Bathurst on the weekend). SCIENCE AND STUFF COLOUR CONES GROW IN NEW EYES: Retinal cone cells vital for colour vision have been successfully transplanted into blind mice. The same team transplanted rod cells, used in night vision, four years ago. The hope for restoring vision in blind people is that transplantable cells which mature into rods or cones can be derived from human embryonic stem cells (HESC), which can grow into any of the body‘s tissues.‖ Ultimately, all blindness results from loss of cones,‖ says Jane Sowden of University College London. Sowden‘s team extracted cells for transplant from the eyes of foetal or newborn mice. They selected cells with active cone rod homeobox genes, which commit cells to become rods or cones. Transplants were performed on mice engineered to mimic a form of childhood blindness called Leber‘s congenital amaurosis. The team injected 200,000 isolated cells into a space in each eye at the rear of the retina between the layer of light sensitive cells - engineered to be damaged in the recipient eye and a supporting epithelial cell layer above. Within 21 days, the new cells settled into the photoreceptor layer and grew into rods and cones (Human Molecular Genetics, DOI:10.1093/hmg/ddq378). TURBO SPUDS: Transgenic aloo gobi, anyone? A potato genetically modified in India makes up to 60 per cent more protein per gram than ordinary spuds. But as that‘s 60 per cent more of not very much, it‘s not the most interesting part: the surprise is that the GM crop also yielded more potato per hectare than normal plants. This is the first time that a simple genetic modification has increased the yield. Subra Chakraborty and Colleagues at India‘s Central Potato Research Institute in Shimla created the high protein ―protato‖ by giving potatoes a gene from the grain amaranth that turns on production of a storage protein in tubers. The team has now spliced this gene into seven commercial potato varieties, and field – tested them for several seasons (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, DOI: 10.1073/pnas. 1006265107). The plants produced 15 to 25 per cent more potatoes per hectare by weight – the first time this has been reported for a plant with one extra gene. NOODLING THE NOODLES: It took thousands of years to go from mush to spaghetti: Food historian Francine Segan asserts that pasta emerged more than 5,000 years ago when an enterprising chef happened upon the now seemingly obvious idea of mashing flour and water together to create something that looked surprisingly like lasagne. ―It breaks my heart to tell you this‘‖ says Segan, invoking her own Italian heritage, ―but the first to make those noodles might have been the ancient Greeks. Lots of references in ancient Greek writing –

even in 3,000 b.c. – talk about layers that sound a lot like lasagne.‖ Spaghetti took longer but appears to have taken shape in Italy. A popular misconception has Marco Polo introducing Italians to pasta when he returned from China in 1295, but Italy already had pasta by then. ―In Sicily there is a town called Trabia,‖ wrote Arab geographer Muhammad Al-Idrisi in 1154. In this town they made a food of flour in the form of strings.‖ He describes a true pasta industry: foodstuffs were first dried in the sun and then shipped by boat to other regions of Italy and even other countries. A few hundred years later Leonardo da Vinci invented a machine that turned dough into edible strings. Technical glitches kept his pasta maker from achieving the mechanization of the industry he had hoped for. Still, the Italians succeeded in refining the art of pasta making, crafting more elaborate forms of mushed dough than anyone else (Story by Mike May, American Scientific, August 2010). AUSTRALIAN PLATE WARPED BY SPEED: The giant Continental plate that carries Australia is travelling faster than the underlying mantle, creating pressures that may eventually split the continent, according to geologists. Australia sits on a large crustal ‗plate‘ that extends from Indonesia, New Zealand and part way to Antarctica, all the way to India and the Himalayan ranges. It‘s moving in a north-easterly direction at the Geologically rapid rate of about seven centimetres per year. The mobile, partially melted rock layer of the Earth‘s upper mantle is thought to partly drive the plate‘s motion. The Indo-Australian plate is also pulled by gravity as it sinks along the Pacific ‗ring of fire‘. But geological features around Australia hint at a more complex story, Mike Sandiford from the University of Melbourne told the Australian Earth Sciences Convention. These features include tilted parts of the South Australian coast, the lack of large carbonate deposits in northern Australia and the shape of volcanic provinces in southern Victoria. ―What we‘re seeing across Australia in the various manifestations of motion are instabilities caused by a differentiation between the Lithosphere (crust) and the asthenosphere (upper mantle). The plate is going faster than the mantle beneath it.‖ The resistance may eventually cause the plate to break in two, he said. Structural geology expert Peter Cawood, director of the Tectonics Special Research Centre at the University of Western Australia in Perth said it‘s a ―provocative new view of our old continent.‖ ―Although Australia is often considered to be tectonically dead, (this research) reveals it to be surprisingly active,‖ he said.

From the CEO’s Desk GP Recruitment Update

At this stage the Southern Regional Medical Group based in Albany has indicated it will provide a GP (doctor) and has agreed to put forward a submission to the Shire for consideration. Details regarding this arrangement will be released in due course.

The Shire is still pursuing a long term strategy with the Shires of Corrigin, Kulin and Kondinin regarding a GP group scheme. To this end, Rural Health West has been engaged to develop an initial analysis and profile regarding a possible model regarding how the group scheme would work. The Southern Regional Medical Group has also indicated it would like to be a part of this scheme.

Lakes VROC Regional Housing Project

The Lakes VROC (the shires of Lake Grace, Dumbleyung and Kent) met with the Shires of Woodanilling, West Arthur, Williams and Wagin (4WD VROC) last week to discuss the regional housing project. The aim is to provide medium density housing including additional aged accommodation under the regional component of the Country Local Government Fund. The meeting was attended by the Shire President, the Manager Community Services and the Development Officer and included presentations from National Lifestyle Villages, Country Builders WA and Pinelock Homes. As a result, the meeting agreed to proceed with a business case for the respective regional councils with funding applicable over 2010/11 and 2011/12.

Newdegate Medical Centre

Thank you to those in the community who helped relocate the palm tree. The next stage of the project will see the surveyor mark out the site during this week and then the laying of a foundation sand pad by the Shire during the next week or so. Once the sand pad is in place, the foundation works can commence.

Lake Grace Day Care Centre

I had the opportunity to attend a meeting of the Lake Grace Day Care Centre Committee recently. This allowed me to see first hand the excellent work that this committee is doing to assist with the Day Care Centre project.

In terms of the building itself, now that the wall frames are in place, the next stage of this project involves the construction and placement of the steel roof trusses.

Dewar St, Lake Grace Light Industrial Area

I am pleased to advise that the Landcorp Board has approved this project and will develop the site accordingly.

The Shire of Lake Grace invites you to the

Lake Grace Cemetery Restoration

Commemoration Service

11.00am on Wednesday 20th October at Lake Grace Cemetery

The September Ordinary Council Meeting was held at the Lake King Hall on Wednesday 22nd September 2010.

Mr Hugh Roberts of Lake King attended Public Question Time and asked a series of questions regarding road works in the Lake King area mainly to do with the Lake King-Norseman Road.

Councillors gave reports on their attendance at various meetings during the month.

Tenders were considered for maintenance grading in the Lake King and Newdegate areas and gravel pushing and stockpiling for the whole of the Shire. The tenders attracted a big response and were keenly contested, with the three year contracts all being awarded to local contractors.

The Lake Grace Flood Mitigation Preliminary Design proposal by GHD was endorsed with Phases 1, 2 & 3 to proceed subject to the sourcing of funding for the project.

Council received reports relating to the Wheatbelt South Regional Road Group, the Grain Freight Task Review and Australian Rural Road Group Inc.

The CEO’s update on the recruitment of a GP for the Shire was also considered.

An application to the Dept of Sport and Recreation’s Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund on behalf of the Newdegate Country Club was endorsed. The Newdegate Bowling Club is seeking funding for a synthetic surfaced bowling green at Newdegate.

The Shire of Lake Grace Emergency Management

Arrangements were endorsed - this will now ensure a coordinated response by all agencies having responsibilities and functions in an emergency.

Lakes VROC (Regional Group - Shires of Lake Grace, Dumbleyung & Kent) - Council supported the allocation of the regional component for the 2010/11 & 2011/12 Country Local Government Fund (R4R) to the joint accommodation project.

Council accepted the Newdegate Research Station Positioning Paper as the first step in the possible development of a proposal that seeks a resolution regarding the future of the Newdegate Research Station.

Minutes of the meeting including the reports on all of the above are available on Council’s website at www.lakegrace.wa.gov.au

The October 2010 Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday 27th October at Council Chambers in Lake Grace commencing at 1.00 pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Councillors and staff will be represented at the 2010 National Local Roads and Transport Congress in Bunbury this week. This Australia wide local government event is held annually in locations all over Australia and brings councils together to strengthen the local government case for increasing Commonwealth investment in local roads. The Congress also coincides with the West Australian Local Government’s 2010 Transport and Roads Forum which this year will focus on freight management, a critical issue facing roads and transport in WA.

Emergency Farmland Water Supply In recent years the Department of Water (DoW) has promoted the development of a network of strategically located emergency farmland water resources in shires where landowners do not have the security of a piped water service. The Shire of Lake Grace has a list of these sources of non pipeline community water supplies. There is a strong likelihood that some land holders may experience water shortages during the coming summer months. In the event that landholders require off-farm water, these community water sources can be accessed. This water is non-potable and in an emergency livestock welfare must be given precedence over water for general use. Water can be taken from these sites for fire-fighting. Scheme water from standpipes is also available, but it should be noted that this source is intended as a last resort. Please use water from the emergency farmland water sources for stock before you go to the standpipe. Under the Government’s “Water Deficiency Declaration” guidelines, should a group of five or more landholders within a 20km radius, have to cart water for livestock purposes and are travelling more than 40km one way to a water source to collect the water, local government may take an application to the State Government through the DoW, to meet the cost of carting water to a central point in the community. For further information on the location of the emergency water sources or any other related matter please contact Marcus Owen at the Shire office on 9890 2500.

On Friday 24th September at the Goldfields Arts Centre, the exhibition ‗Canopy‘ created by Lake Grace artist Kerrie Argent was opened by Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban Landcare Group coordinator, David Gleeson. With over 50 people attending the opening, they were able to view Mrs Argent‘s silk, aluminium and photographic works that are environmentally inspired. From exquisite hand-dyed fabrics to striking recycled aluminium images, the exhibition is as varied as the realm it reflects. The giant seedpods suspended from the ceiling, cut out material strips sweeping to the floor and an organza silk dress that seems almost out of this world. ‗The panels were created as an interactive piece to be hung together with enough space to walk amongst them, like walking in the woodlands around our region‘ Mrs Argent said. She spent ‗many days, months, years‘ wandering around the family farm, collecting samples of leaf and bark matter for dyeing. Mrs Argent marvels at the resilience of the landscape and sees her art as a celebration of ‗this unique ability of the Australian bush to survive, to regenerate, regerminate and regrow‘. This exhibition is on at the Goldfields Arts Centre for a few months which Kerrie was thankful for as she is going in a couple of weeks to take her milk bottle lid sculpture, ―Evidence – the trail continues‖, to Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi.

The Bollards in the Park project is finally finished. What started off as couple of bollards to stop cars from driving on the mosaic pavers people had lovingly made for the Mosaic Garden Gallery project just grew larger and larger? So after Parents and students had installed the mosaic pavers in the pathway from the AIM Hospital Museum to the Mosaic Garden Gallery the bollards were to be installed. Funds raised for labour of the installation of the pavers went towards the Canberra Camp. So instead of two bollards I first thought of, I then went on to envisage that a woodland of poles would be much more interesting. A total of 25 poles were to be created. This project was then included in the Shire of Lake Grace Flood Recovery project funded by Lotterywest, which gave us the funds to pay for the materials to create the bollards. This started one weekend with Greg, Jayne and me crawling around the ground digging out the footings ready for the reinforcement and for the poles to be installed. Then the heavy work began. Over a weekend a group of very busy people created the earth colour bollards some up to six foot high. Each pole has a variety of earth colours melding together like the ochre mines in the desert. Barrow loads of different coloured cements were mixed and bucketed into the forms. I can not say thank you enough to the small band of helpers over the weekend especially the tall guys who lifted buckets of cement up to fill up the six foot armatures. Thanks to Donny Fleay, Phil Houston, Ross Chappell, Colleen Hopkins, Phyl Dunham, Jill and Geoff Duckworth, Tania, Darren and Elizabeth Spencer, Debbie Clarke and of course my ever helpful Greg and Jayne thanks guys. A variety of heights were created some just high enough to double as a seat if you need a rest while you

are looking at the 365 mosaic pavers and the 20 small ones on the poles. Kathy and Greg Edwards kindly donated large PVC pipe to create the armatures, thank you very much. But there is more so keep reading, the next part of the project was to make mosaics for the top of the poles. The school students in town were invited to come along and create a mosaic of an Australian animal, so for one day each week for three weeks a small group of about 15 students turned up at the art space after school to create their masterpieces. A variety of Australian animals, wombats, platypus, koalas, redbacks spiders, magpies, dolphins, mice, butterflys, snakes, owls, lady bugs, echidna‘s and other little creepy crawlies I have missed. The mosaics were installed in a reverse method and the paper was to be removed after the tile glue had dried, I had hoped it wouldn‘t rain for 24 hours so the glue would set, more to the point it hasn‘t rained since. The plan was to peel the paper and glue off after a couple of days of rain or drizzle which would soften the pva glue, but no it just didn‘t happen so as well as a drought we had to pick and scrape every little bit of glue and paper off each mosaic it was a tedious job standing in the cold wind doing this (I am a creature of comfort I am afraid, and cold wind is of no comfort) anyway luckily for me a heap of my work collegues from the Lake Grace Hospital volunteered to help me scrape the rest of the poles so with many hands and a lot of chatter the girls scaped all the paper and glue off for me and then Phyl and I were able to whip in on Friday morning and grout the tiles. Thank you for your very much appreciated help. Am I glad yes, yes it is finally finished and the Shire will be glad another project from the flood recovery project has been completed. What can I do next?

LOST? MISSING? UNFOUND? MISPLACED BANNERS

The banners that the art group have painted for the Shire for banners in St Georges Terrace are missing, last seen at Shire function at Newdegate pavilion. We have been looking for these and no-one seems to know where they are. Have you seen them or heard of any one knowing where they are? Could you please contact Tania 9865 1339 or Jayne 9865 4042 and let us know. It has probably been nearly two years since last seen. Yes we have been looking since then. Did you have fun this week? We did. After losing 1/3 of our art space to the new cafe, Caffe Arjo we had to clean up the mess and get the Art Space into some order, as the next workshop was upon us. Saturday and Tuesday saw a flurry of activity to clean and rearrange the Art Space; Darren brought his truck along so we could get rid of all the building rubble and any excess rubbish out of the Space. Thanks to Greg and Darren for helping us with that. Then on Tuesday Margaret, Phyl, Tania and I spent most of the day rearranging, sweeping and de-cluttering. Huge job. Thanks girls, the space is basically back to a working space now.

Just in time for our colour mixing workshop on Saturday, Lois Hayes came down from Perth to do a one day workshop on colour mixing with warm and cool colours. This works with most mediums and saves you having multiple tubes of paint; you only have to have six basic colours and white and you can make as many colours as you want. What fun colour mixing is. I could have sat there all day doing it, actually I did, and it is something we all need to practice and it‘s a thought for our next exhibition. Thanks to Lois for coming down to teach and Tania for organizing the workshop. Thanks also to all the artists that made the time to come, including Melissa Daw from Ravensthorpe and Carol Griffin from Kulin, it‘s great to get artists from around the district coming along as well. The wind festival is upon us and hopefully we will see a few more art in motion projects popping up around town. As you can see the plastic bottles at the front of the Art Space look great and are very simple to make, so it doesn‘t have to be too much work or expense to participate in this event. We will be holding our closing event at the end of October which will again be a kite making and flying day. So whether you have one of those flash kites or not, come along to the Art Space in the morning for kite making and then up to the oval for a sausage sizzle and kite flying. All are welcome. Participation is the key word…and a bit of wind For people who are asking, yes I am still collecting plastic lids and beer bottle and metal lids, I just used another 15,000 lids for a new piece to go over the ball when we take the slug across the Nullarbor to Sculpture by the Sea Bondi in Sydney this month. Should be fun. So yes, please keep collecting. Thank you.

Unfortunately the Men‘s A grade Champion Chris Carruthers wasn‘t present to accept his trophy; however runner-up Gary Frost did enough talking for both of them. B Grade winner, Alan Stubberfield was also absent however Sam Stubberfield was on the spot to collect the trophy and make a speech on behalf of his father (the trophy isn‘t for your mantelpiece Sam). Nick Maalouf received the runner-up trophy for the Men‘s B Grade.

Longest drive for the men was won by Chad Stanton. Winner of the Men‘s Eclectic was Matt (Merv) Spurr who also received a ‗special‘ gift from the Ladies; the men are happy for Matt‘s good fortune but are hoping that the surprise gift hasn‘t scared him off the game.

Just when you thought that everyone may have forgotten your ‗errors of judgement‘ over the last 12 months Reid Stubberfield started doing the rounds with the fine tin. The fines weren‘t flying as briskly as have done in previous years however Matt Spurr made plenty of ‗donations‘! Just remember the RFDS is a great cause and are grateful for any of your money.

But all of this was just a prelude to what was to come. Gary Frost went a whiter shade of pale when Craig tapped him on the shoulder and said ‗we have another announcement to make‘. A submission had been made to the members of the Lake Grace Golf Club, with the members appointing Gary Frost to be a Life Member of the Lake Grace Golf Club, the members being of the opinion that the services rendered were sufficiently meritorious to warrant such appointment.

While Gary found his feet the following letters were read out:

Marcus Owen read Justin Wright‘s nomination letter which outlined the 14 years that Gary has given to Junior Golf, not only the weekly junior sessions but the annual TID clinic. The letter also mentioned the coaching and arrangement of coaching for seniors; active membership of three decades; attendance of golf camps at Quairading with juniors; golf coaching programme at Lake Grace District High School; organisation of accreditation coaching clinics for other parents and the application for Smarter than Smoking grants.

Jeanette Bennett read a letter of endorsement from Neil, Yvonne and Whitney Harvey which spoke of Gary‘s assistance in the progression of Whitney‘s golfing from novice through to representing WA in the state junior and senior women‘s teams. Jeanette then went on to read another letter from Wade Clatworthy, another coach for the Graham Marsh Foundation. Wade wrote of the respect that Gary engendered from his young charges and that he had not known another junior coordinator teach

the basics as well as what Gary did.

Michelle Lay read a letter from Robert Farley, Head Professional Coach at Marangaroo Golf Course and who was once the State Junior Coach of the Graham Marsh Foundation and travelled to Lake Grace on many occasions to run the TID clinics. Rob wrote of Gary‘s passion in encouraging and bringing so many people into the game of golf; and that his junior golf club is the model that other towns aspire to.

Terri Parker read a letter from Lake Grace DHS Principal John Boyland who talked about the rapport Gary had with the children and the professionalism of the program that he runs at the school; a programme that is beneficial to the school, to the children and to the promotion of golf with the younger members of the Lake Grace community.

By now Gary had found his feet but the cat had well and truly got his tongue! Gary said that he had found the junior golf programme personally rewarding; that he enjoyed the opportunity to teach kids the great game of golf and that the skills he had learned had helped with his own game. He thanked everyone for their support with the juniors over the years and was grateful for what the Lake Grace Golf Club had given him.

Gary‘s affiliation with the Lake Grace Golf Club began in 1982, following his retirement from football. For the first five to six years he was an active member of the social committee. This involved all the fun stuff such as helping out with the bar and selling raffle tickets; in that era there would have been 80+ hitting off every weekend and the beer came in kegs!

He then did a two year stint as Vice Captain before having a hiatus and then becoming Vice Captain again for another two years; he also held the position of Vice President for two terms. As part of his ‗ambassadorial‘ role for the Lake Grace Golf Club he was always a sure thing at Open Days and the Lakes Carnival; only missing two of them over the years. One was for the arrival of daughter Jessica and the other was for her 21st.

It was half way through 1996 when Gary took up the position of junior golf coach with Chris Carruthers and Wayne Milton; all of whom had become accredited junior coaches. Gary has seen many junior golfers come through the Lake Grace Club, those teeing up in the early days are now in their mid to late 20‘s and still carry with them the skill that Gary instilled in them.

It‘s been ten years since the Lake Grace Golf Club awarded a Life Membership; Gary Frost is the eleventh awarded this honour in the Club‘s history.

One in two women and one in three men over the age of 60 will develop osteoporosis in Australia. Osteoporosis is a serious disease with devastating effects on the lifestyle of suffers. Some sufferers will find that a simple sneeze causes their ribs to crack, or a slip in the kitchen may shatter their hip. This is frightening considering that 20% of people who require a hip replacement will die within 12 months of receiving it - mostly due to the changes in lifestyle a hip replacement requires. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms of osteoporosis until the disease has developed. However, osteoporosis is a preventable and treatable disease. Osteoporosis Solutions commits to providing the best

possible service of testing and diagnosing of osteoporosis for both men and women of all ages. Our DEXA machines are the gold standard of testing for osteoporosis. Please note that residents who are aged 70 or older can now have their bone density tested for free every year (bulk billed under Medicare item 12323). Night watch Welcome to Night Watch for the period from midnight Friday October 1st to midnight Friday October 15th 2010. Night Watch is a guide to where you can find and view objects in the day and night sky with the naked eye (NE), binoculars (Bin) or telescope (Tele). Astronomy is looking up from a dark area.

Now is a good time to view the blue/green coloured planet URANUS if you have a telescope of any size as it trails close behind the bright gas planet JUPITER in the early eastern night sky. The two planets Mercury and Saturn are still out of view with VENUS out of view after Tuesday 19th.

Our Local star “THE SUN” shining at magnitude -26.72 in the Constellation of Virgo this fortnight will rise in the East/south/east and set in the West/south/west from 149.3 million km’s from Earth. Never view the Sun with the naked eye or an optical instrument without a proper Solar Filter and read the instructions carefully if you must do so.

TWILIGHT on Saturday October 16th begins at 4:04am with evening twilight ending at 7:46pm On Saturday 23rd morning twilight begins at 3:54am with evening twilight ending at 7:52pm. Morning twilight on Friday October 29th begins at 3:47am and evening twilight ending at 7:59pm. The 78% MOON in CAPRICORNUS on Monday 18th at 6am will be 5º south of the planet Neptune (not in view). AT 3am on Tuesday 19th in Aquarius the 85% MOON will be at Apogee, furthest from Earth at 405,428 km’s as it sets in the West/south/west. The 91% MOON on Wednesday 20th will be 6º off the planet Uranus and 7º south of Jupiter at 7pm and still in view during the night using binoculars or scope. On Saturday 23rd at 9:30pm the 100% FULL MOON will occur in Pisces at magnitude -12.0 at 399,000 km’s from Earth but not in view.

VENUS: The very bright planet at magnitude -4.3 in Libra on Saturday 16th, may be found at 7:50pm in the West/south/west before setting in the twilight by Friday 29th will be between the sun and Earth at Inferior Conjunction, 41.4 million km’s from Earth. Venus reappears on Saturday November 12th.

MARS: The red coloured planet at magnitude +1.3 in Libra, on Saturday 16th may be found at 8pm low down in the West/south/west, with binoculars before setting at 8:37pm. On Saturday 23rd Mars will set at 8:33pm and at 8:30pm on Friday 29th in SCORPIUS at 348 million km’s from Earth.

JUPITER: The giant gas planet shining at a bright -2.9 magnitude now in the Constellation of Aquarius, can be found in the North/north/east under the star circlet and the Great Square of PEGASUS at 8pm on Saturday 16th and sets at 4:24am Sunday. On Wednesday 20th Jupiter will be 7º south of 91% Moon at 7pm and in view in the evening twilight. Jupiter during this fortnight will remain in the sky all night and sets next morning and on Friday 29th will be 622 million km’s from Earth. For telescopes, The Great Red Spot (storm), will be in view for one hour on at 10pm on Saturday 16th, Tuesday 19th at 7:25pm, Thursday 21st at 9:02pm, Saturday 23rd at 10:40pm, Sunday 24th at 6:31pm, Tuesday 26th at 8:08pm and Thursday 28th at 9:46pm. On Wednesday 20th at 8:15pm the shadow of the Moon EUROPA will start to cross the planet disc and finish at 11pm. On Thursday 21st at 6:42pm the shadow of the Moon

IO will start to cross the disc and finish at 9pm. The shadow of IO will again cross the planet disc at 8:40pm on Thursday 28th finishing at 10:50pm.

URANUS: The blue/green gas planet shining at magnitude +5.7 in Pisces on Saturday 16th may be found just behind Jupiter with a telescope and sets on Sunday at 4:27am. On Wednesday 20th Uranus will be 6º south of the 91% Moon. Uranus is 2.89 billion km’s from Earth on Friday 29th and like Jupiter can be found in the sky all night this fortnight.

NEPTUNE: The grey/green gas planet shining at magnitude +7.9 in CAPRICORNUS on Saturday 16th may be found in the north at 8:10pm and just north of the end star delta on the east end of the boomerang with a telescope of any size. On Monday 18th Neptune will be 5º south of the 85% Moon (too bright to view). Neptune remains in the sky all night to around 2am each morning and on Friday 29th will be 4.44 million km’s from Earth.

METEORS: May be viewed in the morning sky this fortnight after midnight in the Constellations of Gemini and Orion (The Saucepan). Also Meteors may be seen at any time of the night without the Moon.

High in the south sky at 8pm on Monday 25th after the Moon rises later at night, the Constellation of GRUS the Crane, stands out in the sky and is recognised by the line of double stars that represent the body with two stars in the east being one wing and the bright star in the west being the other. Further south you will notice three stars in a triangle which represent the head. The bright star FORMALHAUT is direct north at 8pm on Friday 29th, which is the main star in Pisces Austrinus the southern fish. Just further north are the three main stars of Aquarius with lines of stars running south that represent the water spilling from the vase. To the south/east is the bright blue star ACHENAR, which is the start of ERIDANUS the river, and is a line of stars that wind their way to the skirt of Orion. In the North-north-east are the red coloured M stars of CETUS the whale or monster. On the North/north/east horizon is the bright ANDROMEDA galaxy which from a dark sight can be found with the naked eye or binoculars and then using a telescope you will find the two companion galaxies. In the North/north/west is Capricornus and in the South/south/west is the Southern Cross with the two trailing stars moving to the south.

Finding some of the objects is hard to find, but the use of binoculars makes it a little easier. Another thing to observe is the Moon in daylight and how it changes it’s position from north to south or the reverse.

Viewing through my 8 inch LX50 Schmidt telescope at my house is free of charge. Observations of the Sun during the day with the Moon day or night and at night the viewing of star clusters and nebula, also the pointing out of Constellations and the planets in view.

Most anxiety and depression starts from a situation that is unresolved in our lives. I call this type of problem ―Situational Distress‖ and they can be very debilitating if left. These events can be about relationships, finance, and physical health or dealing with difficult times in our work life, the possibilities are endless. What happens if we don‘t deal with these ―Situational Distressors‖ is that they erode our ability to cope and work safely. If we are living with excessive stress or anxiety it will alter the chemical balance in your mind to the point where you become dysfunctional in decision making and overlook critical safe practices you would normally respect and observe. If you are having trouble sleeping this can also lead to fatigue which compromises your ability to stay safe. You may also experience temper outbursts that can lead to irrational behavior and dangerous thoughtless activity that can compromise your safety or the safety of others. Mental illness is often underestimated and it is very insidious in the way it affects our behavior and work practices. Be prepared to acknowledge when the going is tough, or you are tired or fatigued. Take extra care

and protect yourself and others from the effects of ―Situational Distress.‖ The simple message is always evaluate the risks in the context of your current capacity to cope, which may involve stepping back, putting in place extra protection or rethinking a job in some way.

Lake Grace Bowls Notes Lake Grace Bowls opened their 2010 / 2011 season on Saturday 9th October with their annual Cancer Fund Raising day. Twenty five attended, which was a great effort considering there were wind gusts of 72 km/h with plenty of dust flying.

The bowlers soldiered on, wiping the dust off their bowls as they went, with $217 raised for the Cancer Foundation.

On Sunday the pairs championships were played for the 2009/2010 season. The ladies was won by Gloria Pelham and Elsie Griffin, while the men‘s was won by Martin Downey and Geoff Sabourne.

This Saturday the men will be playing their 4‘s championships for the 09/10 season and the ladies will be playing their singles championships for the 09/10 season. Names need to be in by noon for a 12:30pm start.

Sunday will be social bowls, names need to be in by 2:30pm for a 3pm start. There will be a sausage sizzle following. The following week (23rd October) is the first round of pennants.

1: Geoff Sabourne and Chris Carruthers keep an eye on the bowl. 2: Looking like they‘re up to no good are Milton Reynolds, Morrie Smith and Kingsley Strevett. 3: Robert Carruthers, Clem Bennett, Elsie Griffin and Rachel Pelham cope with the inclement weather conditions. 4: Murray Stanton and Gloria Pelham will the bowl toward them. 5: Runty (Reg) Fleay shows off his flair and his new hat.

Humour Vampire bat A vampire bat came flapping in from the night covered in fresh blood and parked himself on the roof of the cave to get some sleep. Pretty soon all the other bats smelled the blood and began hassling him about where he got it. He told them to go away and let him get some sleep but they persisted until finally he gave in. "OK, follow me" he said and flew out of the cave with hundreds of bats behind him. Down through the valley they went, across a river and into a forest full of trees. Finally he slowed down and all the other bats excitedly milled around him. "Now, do you see that tree over there?" he asked. "Yes, Yes, Yes!" the bats all screamed in a frenzy. "Good" said the bat, "Because I sure as heck didn't!" God and the Scientist God was sitting in heaven one day when a scientist said to Him, "God, we don't need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing - in other words, we can now do what you did in the beginning." "Oh, is that so? Tell Me..." replies God. "Well," says the scientist, "we can take dirt and form it into the likeness of you and breathe life into it, thus

creating man." "Well, that's very interesting...show Me." So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mould the soil into the shape of a man. "No, no, no..." interrupts God, "Get your own dirt." Important Lesson A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honour" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill." Marriage Counselling After just a few years of marriage filled with constant arguments, a young man and his wife decided the only way to save their marriage was to try counselling. They had been at each other's throats for some time and felt that this was their last straw. When they arrived at the counsellor‘s office, the counsellor jumped right in and opened the floor for discussion. "What seems to be the problem?" Immediately, the husband held his long face down without anything to say. In

Humour contrast, the wife began talking 90 miles an hour, describing all the wrongs within their marriage. After 15 minutes of listening to the wife, the counsellor went over to her, picked her up by her shoulders, kissed her passionately and sat her back down. Afterwards, the wife sat speechless. The marriage counsellor looked over at the husband, who stared in disbelief. The counsellor said to the husband, "Your wife NEEDS that at least twice a week!" The husband scratched his head and replied, "I can have her here on Tuesdays and Thursdays." The One Sunday It was Palm Sunday, and the family's 6-year old son had to stay home from church because of a strep throat. When the rest of the family returned home carrying palm branches, the little boy asked what they were for. His mother explained, "People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by." "Wouldn't you know it," the boy fumed. "The one Sunday I don't go to church, and Jesus shows up!" School Visit After delivering a speech at an elementary school, the president lets the kids ask a few questions. One little boy, Joe raises his hand and asks, ―How come you invaded Iraq without the support of the United Nations?‖

Just as the president begins to answer, the recess bell rings and he says they‘ll continue afterward. 25 minutes l a ter the ki ds com e back to cl ass. ―Where were we?‖ says the president. ―Oh, yes... do you kids have any questions?‖ Another boy raises his hand and says, ―I have three questions: First, why did you invade Iraq without support from the U.N.? Second, why did the recess bell go off 30 minutes early? And third, where is my buddy Joe?‖ Angry Neighbour A man was in his front yard mowing grass, when his neighbour storms out of the house straight to the mailbox, opens it, slams it shut and storms back in. A little later the neighbour storms out and does the exact same thing again, before storming back in even more red-faced. As the man was getting ready to edge the lawn, out the neighbour comes again, marches to the mail box, opens it before slamming it closed harder than ever. Puzzled by the neighbour‘s actions the man asked, "Is something wrong?" "There certainly is!" the neighbour replied. "My stupid computer keeps saying, YOU'VE GOT MAIL."
