Exhibition Summary and Museum Information Exhibition: Life is Short, Life Long: The Art of Healing in Byzantium Dates: 11 February 2015 26 April 2015 Venue: Pera Museum, Istanbul, Turkey This exhibition takes its name from the famous aphorism by Hippocrates and examines the art and practice of healing in Byzantium from Roman times to the late Byzantine period. Curated by Dr. Brigitte Pitarakis, Life Is Short, Art Long examines faith, magic, and rational medicine as methods of healing. It traces the art of healing from the foundations laid by Apollo and Asklepios, healers of antiquity, and Hippocrates and Dioscorides, the founders of rational medicine and also examines the roles of the physician saints. Among the other topics covered and objects on display are icons, reliquaries, and amulets, marble carvings, medical equipment, plants and herbs, medical and botanical manuscripts, and the centers of healing and miracle in Istanbul. The exhibition reveals that the belief that illnesses were primarily caused by demons co-existed alongside a rational understanding of health and medicine based on the teachings of Hippocrates. The art of healing was practiced by physicians, saints, and magicians and involved practices ranging from surgery to daily cleansing of the body and the spirit to exorcism and the veneration of saints. The works offering insight into Istanbuls Byzantine past have been loaned from the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople, the library of the Holy Trinity Monastery of Halki (Heybeliada), the Foundation of the Yeniky Greek Orthodox Church of Panayia and School, the Rezan Has Museum, the Bibliothque nationale de France, the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, Oxford University Herbaria, the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Kastoria Byzantine Museum, and private collections. Museum Information
The Pera Museum opened its doors in early June 2005, as the first step of a comprehensive cultural endeavor of the Suna and nanKra Foundation in a distinguished venue in the city of Istanbul for the purpose of providing a cultural service on a variety of levels. The Museum building and historical structure which was originally constructed in 1893 by the architect AchilleManoussos in Tepeba (stanbul's most prestigious district in those days) and which was, until rather recently, known as the Bristol Hotel, was completely renovated to serve as a museum and cultural center for the project. Transformed into a fully-equipped modern museum, this venerable building is now serving the people of stanbul once again.
The first and second floors of the Pera Museum house three permanent collections belonging to the Suna and nanKra Foundation, with the Sevgi and ErdoanGnl Gallery on the second floor. The third, fourth, and fifth floors are devoted to temporary multipurpose exhibitions. There is an auditorium on below ground level and on the ground floor are Perakende - Artshop and Pera Cafe.
A large part of the first of the two museum floors display examples from the Foundation's collection of Anatolian Weights and Measures for the benefit of those in love with history and archaeology. Made from many different materials using many different techniques, these objects show the development of the devices used to weigh and measure in Anatolia since the earliest times. In another wing on the same floor is the Foundation's collection of Ktahya Tiles and Ceramics, whose strikingly beautiful pieces seek to shed new light on an area of creativity in our cultural history that is not very well known.

The Suna and nanKra Foundation's Orientalist Painting Collection is one of the most elaborate collections in Turkey. This grand collection brings together important works by European artists inspired by the Ottoman world, Turkeys regional geography as well as works of Ottoman artists and how they influenced one another from the 17th century to the early 20th. The collection with more than 400 paintings includes the works by important artists such as Flix Ziem, Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, AmadeoPreziosi, Antoine de Favray, FaustoZonaro, Jean-Baptiste Hilair, Carl Frederik von Breda, GermainFabius Brest, Henry Bone, George EngelhardtSchrder and Bertha von Bayer. The collection presents a vast visual panorama of the last two centuries of the Ottoman Empire, also includes works by Osman HamdiBey and his most famous painting The Tortoise Trainer. As the Collection is focused particularly on the Ottoman Orientalist art, it sustains an exceptional stance. Pera Museum organizes long-term thematic exhibitions of this collection at Sevgi and ErdoanGnl Gallery.
In addition to the Museums educational activities for children and yearly symposiums on intriguing and academic subjects, the Museum has initiating a Film and Video Program in the autumn of 2008. The screenings take place in the Museum Auditorium which seats 160 people. Pera Museum as a modern cultural center located in a vibrant part of the city, also aims to provide the people of stanbul with a broad range of cultural services that include a variety of temporary exhibitions as well as film, educational, conference and lecture programs. So far the Museum has been visited over 800,000 visitors. Museum information Visiting Hours Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 - 19.00 Sunday 12.00 - 18.00 The museum is closed on Mondays.

Celebrating its 10th year in 2015, Suna and nan Kra Foundation Pera Museum,
presents the exhibition
Life Is Short, Art Long The Art of Healing in Byzantium
exploring an early period of medical history
On view from 11 February 26 April 2015
Suna and nan Kra Foundation Pera Museum is proud to present the exhibition Life Is Short, Art Long: The Art of Healing in Byzantium, which takes its name from the famous aphorism by Hippocrates and examines the art and practice of healing in Byzantium from Graeco-Roman times to the late Byzantine period. Curated by Dr. Brigitte Pitarakis, the exhibition examines faith, magic, and rational medicine as methods of healing. Health has always been a central concern of humankind. Examining a civilization from the perspective of its approach to the body, in sickness and in health, leads one into the depths of its identity. This process can also open the door to our own self-knowledge. Life Is Short, Art Long: The Art of Healing in Byzantium offers a glimpse of Byzantine civilization and society through the three traditional methods of healing practiced side-by-side: faith, magic, and medicine. It illustrates the influence of Byzantiums ancient cultural heritage on religious and rational thought as well as contemporary scientific developments and innovations from around the Mediterranean. The Byzantines central role in the transmission of the art of healing to future generations is also highlighted. The exhibition reveals that the belief that illnesses were primarily caused by demons co-existed alongside a rational understanding of health and medicine based on the teachings of Hippocrates. The art of healing was practiced by physicians, saints, and magicians and involved practices ranging from surgery to daily cleansing of the body, and the spirit to exorcism and the veneration of saints. The works offering insight into Istanbuls Byzantine past have been loaned from the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, Istanbul Greek Patriarch, the library of the Holy Trinity Monastery of Halki (Heybeliada), the Foundation of the Yeniky Greek Orthodox Church of Panayia and School, the Rezan Has Museum, the Bibliothque nationale de France, the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, Oxford University, Herbarium and the Benaki Museum in Athens, the Kastoria Byzantine Museum, and private collections.

exhibition and create their own.
-
PUT A SEAL ON IT - DEVAM
Children visit the exhibition and study the seals, which used to serve like signatures, and design their
own seals using a variety of materials such as cork, wood or EVA.
MYSTERIOUS SYMBOL NOTEBOOK
Children design their own symbol notebooks making various drawings and collating paper sheets of
different sizes with simple notebook-making techniques.
-
MAGIC AMULET
Inspired by various examples of amulets, children design amulets for peace, happiness, and good luck,
using materials such as fabrics, feathers, and stones.

succulents, dried plants, and stones, and place small figures in their miniature worlds.
-
WOODWORK WORKSHOP Between March 15 and April 18, 2015, Pera Education is organizing an education program on Woodwork Workshop for the 15+ age group in tandem with the Life is Short, Art Long: The art of Healing in Byzantium exhibition. Participants first visit the exhibition for inspiration, and then create their Woodwork Workshop works using pieces of wood. Using the technique, which has been invented by the Turkish artist Mehmet akir nl who also coined its name, the participants witness the transformation of pieces of wood into works of art.
TERRARIUM WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS Pera Eitim is organizing a Terrarium Workshop in collaboration with Terrarium House in tandem
with the Life is Short, Art Long: The art of Healing in Byzantium exhibition for the 15+ age group.
Detached from nature, the green, and soil in our urban lives, we go back to nature and touch green
to heal ourselves.
In ths workshop, participants learn from Burin Ylmaz what a terrarium is and how to make one.
They then create a terrarium using succulents, dried plants, and stones, and place small figures in
their miniature worlds.
