For those that were unable to make the Annual Meeting last month, we want to entice

you with some of the incredible updates that are taking place at the Starpointe Residents Club.

First, the pools are getting a facelift. The interior plaster will be removed

and replaced with a soft pebble finish with the addition of blue quartz. All new tile and decking will add to the new color scheme that will make an obvious impact for a fresh new look. Next, the slides will be refurbished and repainted with a bold new color and the light house (the structure that houses the stairs and top of the slides) will be repaired and repainted.The pool and patio furniture will all be refurbished. This includes stripping them down, repainting and re-strapping with fresh colors that will accent the pool area with a modern look. The patio furniture will also be stripped and repainted and the cushions will be

reupholstered. To add to the new look, we will be adding three new cabanas so residents have a place to retreat from the sun. The tables that currently have the acrylic tops will be updated with faux stone tops and all new umbrellas will be installed to match the bright new fabrics.To top this all off, the landscape around the pool area will be refreshed and the palm trees that were once removed will be replaced. New speakers and lighting will finish off the details. As you know, the pools will be closed for this project until November 20. We are planning for the big reveal with an open house event for all residents to come and see their updated facility on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.In addition, Starpointe Residents Club will be closed in its entirety from October 5-11 for interior renovations and cleaning. We thank you for your patience throughout these projects and are confident you will be pleased with the results.

Administrative Assistant. Jessie started in August of this year and has over eight years of HOA experience.

Originally from Southern California, Jessie is one of ten children who is fluent in both Spanish and American

Sign Language. Jessie married her high school sweetheart, John, and just recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They decided to move to beautiful Arizona with their two amazing sons, who are currently going to school and working part time. They are all loving Arizona and cannot imagine living anywhere else.

Jessie is a music fanatic and enjoys a large range of artists such as Etta James, Elvis Presley, Pink Floyd and The Smiths. In her spare time she is usually hiking, running or trying new restaurants.

Jessie has already proven to be a huge asset to the Estrella Team and we are honored to have her on board. Welcome “home,” Jessie!

We are excited to unveil our recent enhancements to the Estrella Information Center! This new initiative joins the

Estrella Landscaping Update & Lawn TipsBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

We have been working on completing the list of projects over the summer

and now with fall around the corner, we will be turning our attention to the turf and flowers in the common areas. We are in the middle of the fall turf renovations and soon you will see the winter grass growing in the areas that were over-seeded. We are changing out the summer annual flowers for flowers that do well in the winter: petunias, begonias, and dianthus, etc. All this is just in time for the great weather that we will be enjoying over the next few weeks.

FAll HoME IRRIGATIoN TIpSWith the cooler weather you will need to adjust your irrigation system to the needs of the plant.

Inspect each one of your irrigation valves to see if they are leaking. Most irrigation valves are below the ground in a box. Open the lid and see if there is standing water. Operate each of your irrigation valves from your controller to make sure they come on, and more importantly, that they shut off completely. A valve that does not shut down fully can be wasting water.

Inspect your drip irrigation system, too. If the water that comes out of the distribution tubing is too close

to the trunk of your tree, relocate them away from the trunk and out toward the end of the limbs. This will help the root system expand and develop stronger roots for a healthier tree.

The lawn sprinklers need to be checked to make sure that each sprinkler is spraying in the right direction and that the nozzle is not clogged.

With these few easy checkpoints, your irrigation system should be ready for the winter months.

Fall’s Favorite Ingredient: pumpkin

PumPkin cinnamon rolls By Estrella Resident

Dough: 1 1/2 cups whole milk 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 pckg (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast 1 cup pumpkin purée 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt Melted butter for buttering pans Filling: 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, melted 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 cup finely chopped pecans Frosting: 8 ounces softened cream cheese 1 3/4 -2 cups powdered sugar 1/4 cup whole milk 2 tablespoons melted butter Pinch of salt

Dough Directions: In a large saucepan, combine the milk, vegetable oil and granulated sugar. Heat until hot but not boiling, then remove the pan from the stove and allow it to cool until the mixture is warm to the touch, but not too hot. Sprinkle the yeast over the surface of the liquid and allow it to sit for 5 minutes. Stir in the pumpkin puree until combined. Combine four cups of the flour with the cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Sprinkle it into the saucepan and stir until it just comes together. Cover the saucepan with a dish towel and set in a warm, draft-free place for one hour. After one hour, the mixture should be very puffy and at least doubled in size. Stir in the baking powder, baking soda, salt and remaining 1/2 cup flour until totally combined. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Drizzle butter into three pie pans (or a larger baking dish) and smear it all over the bottom of the pans. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and press it into a rectangular shape. If it is overly sticky, sprinkle generously with flour until easier to handle. Flour a rolling pin and roll the dough into a large rectangle about 18 inches by 24 inches. Filling Directions: Drizzle the melted butter over the dough and smear it all over the surface with your fingers. Mix together the brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Sprinkle this mixture all over the surface of the dough, covering all the melted butter. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup chopped pecans. Starting at the top, roll the dough toward you into a large log. Pinch the seam closed and turn the roll over so that the seam is facing down. Slice into 1/2- to 3/4-inch slices and place the slices in the buttered pan(s). Allow to rise for 20 minutes. Bake until the rolls are nice and golden brown around the edges, 15 to 18 minutes. Frosting Directions: Combine the cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, butter and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until fluffy, adding more milk if you’d like a thinner frosting. Frost the rolls as soon as the rolls come out of the oven. Sprinkle the extra pecans over the frosting, then allow rolls to sit for 15 minutes before serving.

The Best Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis By Estrella Book Club

As a change of genre, the Estrella Book Club will read and discuss “The Best Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis selected and

introduced by Caroline Kennedy” at our October meeting. Caroline quotes her mother as saying this about the nature of poetry: “You can tell the world what you want from it…all the changes in the world, for good or evil, were first brought about in words.” As is our practice, the club member who suggested the title will lead the discussion.

Almost everyone has a favorite poem. Many of us have a poem we can recite from memory often because it was a school assignment. “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth and Geoffrey Chaucer’s “Prologue” to his Canterbury Tales in its original Middle English pop into mind.

“The Best Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis” is divided into seven sections, each one introduced by her daughter. The last one, “In Her

Own Words”, has works by Jacqueline Bouvier and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy – an essay and poem – which are quite special.

This is more than Caroline Kennedy’s tribute to her mother – it is a compilation of both personal and poems loved worldwide. Without doubt, poetry lovers will find several of their favorites among these and be introduced to other poems worth noting.

Come join us, even if you think you don’t enjoy poetry. You’ll leave with a smile on your face and the positive feeling that comes from being in good company. A Tribute To veteransBy Mayor Georgia Lord

Each year, on November 11, we celebrate Veteran’s Day, a national holiday meant to show appreciation and support for the sacrifices

made by American servicemen and women.

This year, the city of Goodyear will honor all of our military veterans in the inaugural Veteran’s Day event: A Tribute to Veterans. As the wife of a retired Air Force Colonel, it means a great deal to me to have Goodyear host such a special event.

Retired Admiral Vern Clark will be the keynote speaker and will share his experiences and the importance of service to our country. Admiral Clark served in the military for 37 years and is the retired Chief of Naval Operations for the US Navy, serving in that position and on the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2000 to 2005.

A Tribute to Veterans will take place at the Goodyear Ballpark from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. We invite the public to help us celebrate at this community event that is free to attend.

Many Goodyear students will take part in this celebration. Westar Elementary School Choir will sing the National Anthem, members of the Agua Fria High School ROTC will present the colors and Desert Edge High School students will also participate. Attendees will have the opportunity to place a flag in the flag garden to honor friends and family in the military.

Fall Festival is here!Goodyear Ballpark

Put on your costumes – or don a mask and come join the fun! The annual Fall Festival, a community event for families and people of

all ages, will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 at Goodyear Ballpark. Admission and parking for the event, which is open to the public, are free. There will be a nominal fee for some activities.

Some of the signature activities at the festival and fun for the kids include: a pumpkin patch, costume contest with prizes, trick-or-treating, train rides and inflatable activities. There also will be corn-hole games, demonstrations and performances by local groups (dance, martial arts, etc.) and local vendors.

“We’re excited that another fall season is upon us,” said Debbie Diveney, Business Operations and Marketing Coordinator for Goodyear Ballpark. “Every year, the Fall Festival has grown and has become more popular. More and more people are beginning to enjoy the ballpark as a place for community events and a place to have a fun evening with the family.”

2015 Mayor Select Teen Art Scholarship Award programBy City of Goodyear

It is time for Mayor Select Fall 2015! This great program continues to grow and Goodyear youth are amazing us with their talent each season.

Mayor Select provides the City of Goodyear an opportunity to recognize Goodyear youth and their artwork. Through the support for the Arts from the Mayor, City Council and Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry, we will continue to make an impact on our community as we support these students on their journey into higher education. Due to the continued support of our exclusive sponsor Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry we will be able to provide one Best of Show winner $500 and the top artwork in four categories for the high school division and three categories in the middle school division will be awarded prize money to use for their education. All students artwork will be on display at the new art festival “Art is Alive” and the Goodyear Branch Library from October 31 to December 10, 2015.

It is time to be on the lookout for little ghosts and goblins walking the neighborhood in search of tasty treats. The Goodyear Police Department

wishes this Halloween to be safe for all. Police offer the following Halloween safety reminders.

TIpS FoR SAFE TRICk-oR-TREATING• Children should never trick-or-treat alone. Young

children should be accompanied by an adult, older children should go in groups

• Only approach well-lit homes and never enter a home without prior parent permission

• Wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or glow stick when trick or treating in the evening

• Make sure children can see and breath easily thorough costumes, instead of wearing masks, consider makeup

• Never approach a vehicle and stay in well-lit, well-traveled areas

• Use extreme caution when crossing the street and use cross-walks

• Teach children to be alert to suspicious activity and report anything unusual to law enforcement

• Advise children not to eat any treats before they are checked by a parent or adult

• Consider Halloween parties or organized community activities as a safe alternative to trick-or-treating

The two Major League Baseball teams that call Goodyear their spring training home have continued to step up to the plate and help the

local community.

Representatives from the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians presented checks to five non-profit organizations during a Goodyear City Council meeting – providing nearly $92,000 overall to the groups who are known for helping others.

This year, Ryan Lantz, Manager of Arizona Operations for the Cleveland Indians and Mike Saverino, Manager of Arizona Operations for the Cincinnati Reds presented checks to these non-profit groups throughout the city: HOPE (Help, Optimism, Peace and Encouragement for cancer patients and their families) Team of Cancer Treatment Centers of America ($37,741), Homeless Youth Connection ($17,769), New Life Center ($17,769), Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce ($11,374) and Southwest Valley YMCA ($7,203).

“We’d like to take the time to recognize some locally-based, well-deserving, non-profit charities that we have partnered with throughout the year and provide them with some contributions that we hope will be impactful in supporting their mission,” Lantz said prior to the checks being presented. “When the city of Goodyear committed to building that beautiful ballpark, we made a commitment to support and give back to the community.”

The Reds and Indians raised the proceeds during signature charitable events throughout the 2015 spring training season – the annual Charity Game, the Celebrity Golf Outing, the 2nd Annual FanFest and the Roundup for Charity in which customers in the Team Shop have the option of rounding their change to the nearest dollar to be set aside for local charities.

Representatives from all five organizations were in attendance to receive their checks and expressed their gratitude to the teams.

The Indians and Reds began training in Goodyear and playing their spring training games at Goodyear Ballpark in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Since then, the teams have donated $450,000 to non-profits in Goodyear.

In 2014, Goodyear Ballpark was voted as the Best Place to See a Spring Training Game in Arizona in USA To d a y ’s 10 Best Readers’ C h o i c e Poll and recently was awarded the 2015 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor (www.TripAdvisor.com) for consistently receiving great reviews from TripAdvisor travelers.

During the 2015 Spring Training Season, Goodyear Ballpark experienced a record-setting year – 150,102 fans – a 10 percent increase in attendance from last year, overall revenue was $5.2 million, an 11 percent from a year ago and the Indians game on March 20 against the Los Angeles Angels set a new attendance record of 11,549. It marked the third sell-out in the ballpark’s history.

“We are coming off the heels of one of Goodyear’s most successful spring training seasons in our brief seven-year history,” Lantz added. “This past spring, we experienced considerable growth in our attendance which led to increases in virtually all of our revenue streams. While this is extremely gratifying, it is also rewarding. Through some of these sources, we were able to increase our contributions off the field as well.”

Last year, the Indians and Reds charities gave a little more than $78,000 to Goodyear non-profits.

Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord said of the non-profit organizations, “All of these organizations do great work and we’re grateful to have them in the community,” Mayor Lord said. “Their work is important and the funds the Reds and Indians provide are going to great causes.”

Estrella Youth Leadership program By Eric Holmgren, Club & Program Manager

To help assist Estrella’s youth prepare to work in partnership with adults, they need to develop and/or enhance their leadership

skills. Leadership training prepares youth to manage time, work as a team, set goals, start conversations, facilitate meetings and make effective presentations. Promoting youth leadership development is a great way to promote positive life skills learning.

To fully participate with adults, youth also need to be informed about the adult perspective of the problem, challenge or issue being discussed: the jargon that adults use to describe their work; and strategies for approaching the work. In other words, we need to be sure the field is level for all of the players.

The Estrella Youth Leadership Program is being designed to do just that for youth grades 8-12 who reside in the Estrella Community. This age group targets youth who are old enough and mature enough to comprehend the complexity of skills, knowledge, and understanding needed for effective leadership; to have a basic knowledge of the community in which they live and the issues facing that community; and to have the intellectual capability, creativity and human relations skills to be involved in planning and conducting service projects in and around the community.

Designed to provide opportunities for younger generations to make a difference in their communities, the Estrella Youth Leadership Program will focus on empowering tomorrow’s leaders by providing resources, programs and events that encourage leadership in today’s youth. The program will engage the youth in focus points such as cultural appreciation, leadership skills, knowledge of issues and self-awareness and giving back through volunteerism.

By providing these positive opportunities, we hope to encourage the youth to strive to reach their full potential, while allowing them to strengthen their positive characteristics and prepare them for college and work in the future.

FALL FESTIVITIES AT ESTRELLA:

RESIDENT PROFILE: THE VALENCIA’SEstrella is a community that was founded upon friendship and family. Krystal and her husband Kenneth Valencia are Estrella residents who recently moved to the Shea Homes neighborhood of Inspire with their two children, seven-year-old Jayden and his three-year-old sister Jada. The family decided to move to be closer to Westar Elementary where Jayden goes to school, but their reason for choosing Estrella goes much deeper than that. Krystal and Kenneth immediately fell in love with the community because of its amenities, top-notch schools and beautiful location. However, the final deciding factor was the people.

“Estrella has a certain vibe to it that we really enjoyed,” said Krystal. While deciding between Estrella and a few other locations, the Valencia’s could not get past the sense of “home” that they felt at Estrella. “We chose Estrella because of the fact that the community feels like a close knit family.”

Their time so far at Estrella has been fantastic, and the whole family is taking full advantage of the community amenities. Jayden has begun playing baseball and the family has been making frequent trips to their neighborhood park. The family loves long hikes and access to the extensive Estrella trail system, and Kenneth is an avid golfer and enjoys Golf Club of Estrella.

Estrella Farmers Market:The Estrella Lakeside Farmers Market returns on October 17! The market is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every third Saturday of the month, October through April. Merchants from across the Valley provide specialty items such as locally grown produce, fresh

breads and pastries, local artwork and more. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the cooler weather and kick off fall season festivities.

Fall Tour of Homes:Estrella will host its fall Tour of Homes, a two-day community-wide open house event on October 24-25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can tour more than 80 homes including models, quick move-in homes as well as resale homes and custom homesites. The self guided tour begins at the Information Center where maps will be provided. The Estrella Information Center is located at 10300 S. Estrella Pkwy, Goodyear, AZ 85338.

Salute Our Troops Run:The Estrella community provides many opportunities to main-tain an active and healthy lifestyle. As we continue to support healthy living in our community, we are excited to announce the return of the Salute Our Troops Run on November 7. The event is open to the public and features a scenic 10k run, 5k run/walk and family fun run on the paths surrounding the

lakes in Estrella. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Military Assistance Mission (MAM), a local nonprofit organization that provides moral and financial assistance to Arizona active duty military, their families and wounded warriors regardless of overseas deployment status.
