McDonald’s - A New Addition to the Estrella CommunityBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager
O n July 23, 2013, the Estrella community was enlightened about
the presentation presented by Derrick & Darian Mellon, brothers who own seventeen West Valley McDonald’s and will open Estrella’s McDonald’s this fall. Most people think of McDonald’s as a place to eat that offers convenience, variety and value, which the Mellon brothers want people to remember about McDonald’s, but there is more to McDonald’s that most people do not know.
• Community commitment and economic impact
• Food quality, choice and nutrition
• People and opportunity
As the biggest and most recognized quick-serve restaurant in the industry, McDonald’s has become a “poster child” for many causes big and small. The Estrella McDonald’s is:
• Focused on local communities and lending a caring hand to our neighbors
• Dedicated to providing new menu choices, nutrition information and food quality that Estrella demands
• Committed to providing opportunities for their employees
• Ready to serve the local community and contributing to charitable causes
The Mellon brothers bring a long history
>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe
and commitment to the tax base and economic development of the West Valley as follows:
• In Goodyear they employ over 250 employees
• Local sales over $10 million last year
• Huge share of the sales pays in state, county and local taxes
• The tax revenues grow and sustain the communities in which they do business
In addition they support many charities including the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Derrick & Darian Mellon are committed to support the Estrella community for many generations to come, so please stop by their new facility and welcome them to our community.

It’s Time for the Estrella Annual MeetingBy Lisa Lundskow, Community Manager
I t’s that time of year again; It’s time for the Estrella Annual Meeting. This meeting is not
only a business meeting, but a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the Estrella Community over the past year. It is bound to be quite a celebration with a Big Top theme and so many things for the community to be proud of.
The evening will begin with a vendor reception starting at 5:30pm. Community partners, vendors, and friends of the community will gather in front of
the performing Arts Center at Estrella Foothills High School to meet and greet with residents. There will be games to help you win more raffle tickets to increase your odds of winning one of the over 50 prizes we will be giving away later in the evening.
The meetings portion of the evening will begin with the Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard presenting the flag and a member of the Goodyear Police Department leading us in the National Anthem.
>>> mANAGer’S meSSAGe
Then the Estrella Community Association and the Villages of Estrella Community Association will hold their business meeting. This meeting will also be the final step in electing two new resident board members for The Villages Community Association. The nominating committee made up of resident volunteers accepted applications from residents interested in running for this volunteer position in July and August and the ballots were sent out to each voting member of the VCA.
After the business meetings and the election of the new resident board members, there will be community updates including a financial report. There will also be updates from the management company, CCMC, as well as, the Developer, Newland Communities. We will also celebrate the many accomplishments of all our resident volunteers. From the residents that serve on Estrella’s five Committees that have dedicated numerous hours to help ensure that this community is functioning as successfully as possible to the event volunteers that make sure that the residents of Estrella have a fun way to come together and connect. Every resident volunteer is important and has contributed to the community’s accomplishments this year. I hope to see everyone on Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm applauding your fellow residents for their hard work and celebrating all the great things that are happening in your community. Plus there will be over $4,000 worth of donated prizes given away and you have to be present to win!

Art: A Path to Creative DiscoveryBy Phyllis Hill, CDP, Senior Consultant, The Creative Arts Academy
P icasso, Rembrandt, Monet . . . When many of us think of art, we may think of Monet’s painting “Impression Sunrise,” hanging on a museum wall, or a sculpture
such as Di Vinci’s “David,” on display. The mention of art may evoke images of marble pillars, ancient expressions of periods of time, odd shapes of clay or metal reflective of a more modern twist. But art is more than an end product on display; art is a path to creative discovery.
Most aspiring artists will never attain the fame of Picasso and Rembrandt, but they do not let this stop them from engaging their creative value, for the creative process inspires the soul, entertains the mind and encourages artistic expression. Expressions of creativity are limitless, from paper to canvas, brick walls to drywall, from wood trusses to water-filled shapes, flowers to planets. Creativity spurs us down the path of discovery and broadens our relationship with texture, color, time, light, sound, volume, size, and shape. Art brings all of these elements together to increase our understanding and enhance our experience in the world around us.
You can engage your creative value. Yes, you have creativity eagerly waiting to draw you into a delightful experience of discovery! No need for reserve or embarrassment; the discovery of creativity will inspire your own style of expression. It is the process of discovery that holds great value.
There are many opportunities to engage your creative side right here in Estrella. The Creative Arts Academy provides classes for those who dare to discover. Approaching this fall is Coffee and Canvas, September 13, 2013 and Family Canvas, November 2, 2013. Visit www.createu.org for class registration, time and place or send an email to [email protected] for more information. Come and experience the warmth of community in an inspirational setting over a delightful cup of coffee and discover your creative value!

A s you may have noticed, many lawn areas in Estrella are undergoing a transition from summer lawn to winter. In the Desert Southwest we do not have the
ability to grow one species of grass year around, thus the Summer Bermuda grass areas that are not overseeded with Rye Grass seed go to sleep and turn a golden brown. The areas that are overseeded with the winter Rye Grass blend provide the community with a healthy stand of lawn for the winter months.
This year we will be continuing with our three-year rotation cycle of overseeding areas. This plan was created in partnership between the Landscape Committee and your management company, CCMC. It began in the fall of 2011 and continues the philosophy of overseeding a particular area two years in a row, and the third year it is not overseeded. The goal is to provide the Summer Bermuda turf base an opportunity to become strong again without the competition from being overseeded.
Major elements throughout the community that will be overseeded include Starpointe, North and South Lakes,
Let’s Make A Difference in the Lawns at Estrella By Jim Potts, Horticulturist
and the North side of Bougainvillea Park. All other residential areas within the community are on the three-year rotation as well. Some exceptions to that are areas that have extremely poor summer Bermuda grass and include the Sidewinder retention in The Fairways Parcel 95 and the large Serenity basin in Parcel 9.3 adjacent to the playground. Once The Fairways and the Serenity basin are recovered, they will be reintroduced into the three-year rotation cycle. In exchange for these areas that are scheduled to not be overseeded, to help the Summer Bermuda grass recover, other areas within The Fairways and Serenity will continue to be overseeded in order to provide some usable active green turf areas in those communities during the winter.
There has been a great deal of resources exerted this summer trying to improve the appearance of the lawns in Estrella through proper watering, an aggressive nutritional program and proper cultural practices. This program will continue in the spring of 2014, as CCMC and Four Peaks work together to make a difference in the lawn areas in the
Estrella Community.

The new neighborhood will begin pre-selling later this fall and will feature 55 foot wide lots and four different floor plans, all of which include solar.
Shea Homes will make its debut in Estrella with 110 home sites on 60 foot wide lots. Models are currently slated to open sometime in 2014. The well respected, family owned builder prides itself on providing energy-wise, eco-friendly designs and quality home construction.
Newland is currently in negotiations with several additional nationally recognized builders to bring another 345 lots online. The developer has also begun the zoning and approval process to build on 620 acres of land at the community’s entrance. The new development will be zoned to feature a wide variety of lot sizes and boast 300 acres of open space and trails.
E strella is continuing to expand and is increasing housing inventory to meet the rising demand. Recently T.W. Lewis by David Weekley Homes, William Ryan Homes
and Shea Homes have been contracted to build a total of
355 new homes in the community.
T.W. Lewis by David Weekley Homes has begun preparing its parcel to build 167 homes in its new gated neighborhood of Golf Canyon along Estrella’s award-winning Nicklaus-Design Golf Course. Homes will range in size from approximately 2,100 square-feet to 3,800 square-feet on a choice of lots 60 or 80 foot wide. This will be T.W. Lewis’ fifth neighborhood in the community and models are slated to open by the end of the year.
Another builder, William Ryan Homes, has taken on 78 home sites along the golf course in Golf Ridge, its new gated neighborhood. William Ryan Homes has built and closed more than 200 homes in Estrella since 2008 and is currently close to selling out its existing three Estrella neighborhoods.

Estrella Economy and Investment Group; There is Something for EveryoneBy Kevin Jordan
C ome join the group! It’s a low stress open forum where we
discuss the things that are happening in the world that have
a direct effect on your money. After all, money matters &
Investing is no Picnic, truer words have never been spoken. Did you
know that less than 5% of those at retirement age have enough to
retire or that 90% of the wealth in this country is held by fewer than
4% of the people?
The stock market, real estate, risk or no risk; who knew it would be
this hard? If you don’t understand the world of investing you’re not
alone. Our group is designed to take some of the mystery out, to
inform people of what’s affecting their money every day. The days
of “buy and hold” or blindly contributing to a 401K is over. You can
no longer be disinterested in how money works or turn it over to a
“professional” to manage for you. Truth is: “If you don’t care about
your money no one else will”!
We all face the same unknown future. Will my home value continue
to rise or is there another bubble looming? Am I invested in the right
areas for growth? Will I be able to afford to send my kids to college
and how do I save for retirement?
It’s time to get off your duff and COME JOIN THE GROUP. You
can be an EXPERT or a NOVICE, 18 or 80, all you must have is
an interest in how to better plan for your financial future. We’ll
have guest speakers in from time to time, so mark down the first
Tuesday (starting Oct 8th) of each month from 7:00pm to 8:00pm at
Starpointe. Call Kevin Jordan for more information: 623-528-8885.

M y name is Judy Gauvin and I’m a Breast Cancer Survivor. I knew that August 16, 2004 was going to be
the start of a new chapter in my life. What I didn’t know was that it would also be the day that changed my life forever.
That morning, I had started a new job after 23 years as a human resource manager with a company that had recently changed hands. That was also the day that I found out I had breast cancer. I was shocked. I was only 46 years old, there was no history of breast cancer in my family, I didn’t smoke, I was in excellent health, I exercised 5 days a week and I ate a balanced diet. I thought, NOT ME! I couldn’t have breast cancer!
But I did. With the support of my family and friends I went through all of the tests. The results came back. I had invasive ductile carcinoma, HER2-positive breast cancer. Fortunately the tumor was small so my surgeon recommended a lumpectomy. Thankfully the cancer hadn’t spread, but because this type of cancer was very aggressive chemotherapy was recommended. I had six rounds of chemo, losing my hair after the 1st round, and 33 sessions of radiation.
That was nine years ago. After completing treatment I knew my life had changed...for the better. Before my breast cancer diagnosis, I took many things in life for granted...my family, my friends, my LIFE. Now I try to value each and every day of my life and the many wonderful people who are a part of it.
I also made a commitment...I committed to do whatever I could to help others learn more about breast health. While living in Milwaukee, I served as a mentor to newly diagnosed women through the organization ABCD (After Breast Cancer Diagnosis). And, for the last 2 years I have been an office volunteer and a Community Outreach Ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and Northern Arizona.
Advocating breast health awareness runs in the family - my husband (and biggest support) Jeff, sits on the board of Komen Central and Northern Arizona. Together we have participated in several Komen Race for the Cure events in both Milwaukee and Phoenix.
And just this last month, with the help of a group of committed neighbors, we established the Estrella Community Crusaders, a grass roots initiative aimed at raising awareness

of breast health and providing a forum to connect Estrella residents for information and support. The group’s first event is a community walk scheduled for Saturday, October 19th (in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month).
One in eight women will develop breast cancer! I fought the battle and I won. Now I want to help fulfill the promise that Nancy Brinker made to her sister, Susan - to find the cure and end the battle with breast cancer once and for all!

3) Monthly BSE [Breast self-examination] for all women
Starting your annual examinations at age 40 has proven to be very beneficial. The Mayo Clinic recently reported on a study, which showed that the death rate from breast cancer was 29% lower in the women in the study who got mammograms compared to those who didn’t.
Risk factors such as age, family history, inherited genes, radiation exposure, obesity etc. may mean a different screening regimen for some women.
HEY GUYS! Breast cancer is naturally more associated with women. After all, breast cancer is about 100 times less common
O ctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What better time to give some thought to taking
control of your health through prevention/early detection of breast cancer? After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States.
The American Cancer Society recommends:
1) Yearly mammograms for women 40 or older
2) Yearly CBA [clinical breast exam, a breast exam performed by a health care professional] for women age 40 or older [or every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s]

P ay it forward, Just BEEcause. This is the core idea that Estrella residents, Justin Clarke, wife Jaime Clark and Mother, MaryAnn Pennella set into place when forming the Honey
Foundation. The basic principles of the non-profit organization, is to teach others about the importance of benevolent giving and to encourage our community of givers to perform these acts more frequently, just BEEcause.
These core principles were created in memory of Justin’s brother, Scott Clarke who performed random acts of kindness on a daily basis.
An interesting aspect that the Honey Foundation created was its tracking, quantifying and commemorating system to see how far your good deed reaches others through technology. This is how it works:
1. Participants can register at www.honeyfoundation.org which will give the foundation the ability to distribute unique stickers that will be mailed to you.
2. Every time you do a good deed or random act of kindness, you will give one of these stickers to the recipient of the good deed.
3. The recipient then displays the sticker somewhere prominent, and follows the simple instructions on the sticker to go online and register the deed they received.
Pay It Forward, Just BEEcauseBy Andrea Tucker, Communications Committee Member
>>>mAKING A dIFFereNCe
4. The original recipient can now create an account, if desired and receive their own unique stickers to “pay forward” their deed to another who is in need.
After deeds start being entered into the website, you can go online and see where deeds occurred, what kind of deeds were paid forward and by whom. This unique system allows users to visually see how that deed was spread throughout the globe.
Although the Honey Foundation promotes a “pay it forward” ideal on a daily basis, they also encourage other random acts of kindness and support locally.
If you would like to participate in an upcoming event, the Foundation is seeking volunteers for the
following programs:
1. Relay For Life- October 5th & 6th from 3pm to 7am
The Honey Foundation is in need of people to join their relay team and volunteers to “man” the Honey Foundation booth.
2. Phoenix Children’s Hospital (PCH) Healthy Obesity Transformation (H.O.T.) Program- Will launch in October/November
The Honey Foundation is in need of donations to supply the families with gifts in kind, such as grocery store gift cards, healthy snacks, sports activities, healthy cook books, etc. They are also seeking volunteers to present information to the families and stuff bags.
3. PCH Birthday Party- April 2014
The Honey Foundation is hosting a birthday party for PCH in April. They are currently seeking donations such as plates, napkins, balloons, cake, food, party favors, etc. for 200 people.

T he EMR Motorcycle Riding Group formed in April of this
year. About the same time AZ Bike Week pre-rally days
kicked off. For those who are unaware, AZ Bike Week is an
annual occurrence, and is comprised of five days of pre-rally events
followed by five more days of official Bike Week events. During those
10 days, members of our newly-created EMR group went on four
separate charity rides.
The first three rides were to raise money for cancer research and the
final one was to raise money for victims of child abuse. That ride,
the Child Empowerment Ride, was hosted and led by two actors
from the TV show Sons
of Anarchy. I volunteered
at that event and, while
I was exhausted from
directing traffic for 2,500
motorcyclists for four
hours, it was a feeling
like no other to do
something so worthwhile
and important. It was a
cause we all cared about
deeply as evidenced by
the number of bikers that
had volunteered to help
out that day.
Anyone who saw
the thousands of
motorcyclists all staged
in one huge area, all
there to help children
who suffer from abuse,
couldn’t help but be
moved. And when the
moment came for all
to start their engines,
the rumbling of 2,500 motorcycles was so loud that people from
everywhere around stopped and watched. The motorcyclists poured
out of the parking lot for five minutes straight, led by the Sons of
Anarchy actors, onto the loop 101, which was shut down by the
DPS officers specifically for this event. They all rode to Westworld
where they met up with the actors and shared in the pride of raising
money for such an important cause. The EMR Motorcycle Riding
Group was proud to participate in these events, and will surely be
involved again in more charity rides in the future.

CITY
E ver since the City of Goodyear expanded the city limits to
the South, the need for a major roadway has been part
of the planning. The Sonoran Valley Parkway Project is
a much-needed roadway and a logical step in the expansion of
transportation in the region. It will provide convenient access to the
West Valley, including into Goodyear and Mobile and the input of the
residents regarding this roadway is important.
With that in mind, six years ago, City of Goodyear applied to the
Bureau of Land Management to build the 15 to 18-mile road that
would provide improved access for fire, police and emergency
services The specific location of the Sonoran Valley Parkway, which
has yet to be determined, would provide faster travel for residents
to and from the Mobile area and will serve future growth that is
expected to occur in this area
As your City Council, we must go through the proper studies as
outlined by the federal government; we must identify an alignment,
the number of lanes, the development need and evaluate its
potential impacts and benefits. Identification of an alignment is just
the first step in a long and rigorous process and take years to finalize
its design, acquire right-of-way and obtain funding for this project.
At this point, the plan for the Sonoran Valley Parkway proposes to
initially develop two lanes with future expansion to six lanes when
needed based on traffic demands. Although a specific location
for the roadway remains under consideration, it would originate at
Rainbow Valley and Riggs Roads and proceed southwest to SR
Residents’ Comments Sought for Sonoran ParkwayBy Mayor Georgia Lord
238 into Mobile. It would travel through
Bureau of Land Management property
in the “Rainbow Valley” area, to the west
of the Estrella Mountains.
The Bureau of Land Management
manages public lands where the
Parkway is proposed and evaluates the
environmental impacts of constructing,
maintaining, and operating a 250-foot wide right-of-way. The Draft
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released on July 19. Two
public meetings were conducted in August. Based on feedback,
the agency extended the comment period until September 20 so
that additional audiences could participate. You can read the Draft
EIS at: www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/lands___realty/svpp-eis.html
Publication of the Final EIS will occur later this year or early 2014,
followed by a “Record of Decision,” from the Bureau of Land
Management that will identify the preferred location of the Parkway.
I remind you that we are only in the planning phase of this process.
There is no funding allocated to the design and construction of this
road. It may be years before we move in that direction, however as
a City, we are taking reasonable steps to satisfy a legal requirement
that may ultimately, at some point in our future, be in the best
interests for the City’s future planning and growth of our community.

G oodyear Police D e p a r t m e n t is an agency
comprised of individuals committed to making a positive difference in the community it serves, even for our four-legged friends!
On July 30, 2013, police were called out
to a Goodyear residence, on a complaint of animal abuse and neglect. When police personnel arrived, they discovered a very disturbing sight! A male Rottweiler was living on the side of a house with no shelter from the hot summer sun, lying on feces-covered gravel. There was very minimal food and water available, and no human interaction. It was later reported that this dog had been living in these dismal conditions for approximately two years.
The Goodyear Police Department contacted the compassionate folks at The Rotten Rottie Rescue and this sweet boy was rescued and placed in immediate foster care and renamed Erie. But, that is
LIFEINESTRELLA.COM | OCTOBER 2013 | 23
CITYMaking A Difference for Our Four-Legged FriendsBy Lisa Kutis, PIO, Goodyear Police Department
not the end of Erie’s story….
Erie had some difficulty getting along with others. After two years of enduring harsh living conditions, Erie developed behavioral problems and trust issues. Unfortunately, Erie’s behavioral issues rendered him unadoptable.
When pets are not adoptable, they typically end up being euthanized. This was a disturbing reality for the employees at the Goodyear Police Department who had worked so hard to get Erie rescued; this was a reality they were unwilling to accept. The good people at the Rotten Rottie Rescue reported back to the department, “Erie wants to be a good boy; he just needs to learn how.”
After learning that the specialized training Erie required would cost approximately $750, Goodyear Police Department Personnel reached deep into their hearts and wallets and took up a donation with the mission of saving Erie’s life. The good news is that enough money was pledged through employee and outside donations for Erie to go to training to become an adoptable companion. Goodyear Police employees agree, “We may not be able to save them all, but
we can make a difference one customer at a time!”

I t’s that time of year for our local PTOs to start raising funds for their schools. The Estrella Mountain Elementary School PTO is proud to present its 4rd Annual Move-A-Thon!®
On November 7th, the school’s nearly 600 students will have heart-pumping fun for a great cause. Each class from Kindergarten through 8th grade will spend one hour learning new and fun exercises at fitness stations sprawled out across Estrella Mountain Elementary ball fields.
Local businesses are welcome to host fitness stations or sponsor water and shade stations and/or prizes. Those who support the

event will have their logo placed on all promotional materials related to the event.
This year, the Move-A-Thon® is coordinated by the City of Goodyear’s Parks and Recreation Department. Funds raised by the Move-A-Thon® help our school purchase technology and text books required by the International Baccalaureate program. This year, our goal is to raise nearly $20,000.
This is Estrella Mountain Elementary School’s major fund raiser of the year. Students will be knocking on doors
seeking donations. And you’ll know your dollars will not be going toward unhealthy foods or products you won’t put to use.
The best news is this: Unlike other school fund raisers, 100% of the funds from the Move-A-Thon® go to the PTO and are not split with outside vendors. So this is truly a win-win-win situation for the students, school, and sponsors!

I f you visit before and after school, or during lunch, you will see a new kind of “Cougar” on campus at Estrella Mountain Elementary School. These new adult “Cougars,” from our Estrella
community, are volunteers who assist the staff by keeping their “eyes on the pride” – our students. The Cougar Community Volunteer (CCV) program offers an opportunity for community members to make a difference at our school by volunteering anywhere from 30 minutes to many hours each week. Our volunteers are parents, grandparents, and community members who have some time to contribute during the school week.
The Cougar Community Volunteer program officially rolled out on the first day of school, with volunteers assisting staff with before and after school supervision duties, as well as lunchroom and recess supervision. The idea for CCV was hatched at a spring site council meeting at which budget and staff cuts for the 2013-2014 school year were announced. The staff cuts meant that teachers would have less time available during the day to mentor, coach and tutor students outside of regular classroom hours. The leadership team concluded: If we had volunteers to help keep “eyes on the pride,” then teachers could devote more time each day to doing what they do best – educating students.
The first priority of the program was to assist staff in managing the safety and well being of students as they come to campus,
A New Kind of Cougar at Estrella Mountain Elementary By Principal Sharon Marine, Estrella Mountain Elementary
while they are at lunch, and as they leave campus. We have made great headway, thanks to all the parents and grandparents who have volunteered, trained, and began assisting on the first day of school. Next, the program will gear up to recruit additional volunteer positions in the media center, reading lab, front office, and classrooms. Everyone at Estrella Mountain Elementary is grateful for the contributions volunteers make at our school every day. It takes a community to grow a great school.
If you are interested in learning more about the program, stop by the front desk at Estrella Mountain Elementary School at the southeast corner of Elliott and San Miguel to inquire or leave your contact information. We will be offering training sessions soon.

The Estrella community is home to three top-notch schools
in both the Liberty and Buckeye School Districts: Estrella
Mountain Elementary, Westar Elementary and Estrella
Foothills High School. The schools continuously work to enhance
education for all students through initiatives like the International
Baccalaureate and STEM programs, gifted and excelling courses
and an innovative curriculum.
Many of you may have already received an early ballot for the
November school-funding elections, or plan to hit the polls on
November 5. A “YES” vote on the Liberty Elementary School
District Bond and Buckeye Union High School District Bond will
provide funds to allow the schools to build additional classrooms,
improve athletic fields and playground conditions, update
technology offerings, increase extracurricular activities, provide
much needed facility maintenance and update security and safety
implementations.
Supporting the school systems in our community benefits all
residents and protects property values. According to the National
Association of REALTORS®, good schools are the most important
amenities in a buyer’s decision to purchase a home.

As Estrella continues to see steady expansion with new builders
