Starpointe Residents Club has been going through some major renovations in the past

several months and we would like to thank all of the residents for their patience and understanding during these projects.  We are certain that you will be truly impressed with the

new, fresh look at the club as things start to come together this month.

To celebrate the renovations, we will be holding an open house on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. We are asking that you RSVP to Lois Jenkins at [email protected] by Monday, November 30 at 5:00 p.m. so that we can be sure to accommodate all attendees.

At this time we will be showcasing the newly renovated

lap and recreational pools, slides and slide structures, pool furnishings, landscaping and lighting.  On the interior, you will be amazed by the new stack stone walls, café area, lighting, renovated floors and tile and several updates to the décor.

The staff was here cleaning from top to bottom, installing lights, installing the stack stone, patching and painting for over seven days.  They devoted many extra hours to ensure that Starpointe Residents Club is shining.  Thanks to all of them for their countless hours of hard work and dedication to make a difference and bring new life to the club for the enjoyment of the residents.

We are all looking forward to showcasing their work at the open house event on December 3 so we hope you will all be able to attend.  We would also like to wish everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

developer

Newland Communities recently conducted a general satisfaction survey with Estrella residents. The purpose of this study was to

gather additional information on resident satisfaction and gain deeper insights on how to improve upon, or add to, the vast selection of amenities to make Estrella an even better community.

Here are some of the key findings from the study:

• The lakes and community activities are among the most highly rated features of the community

• Estrella residents also love their homes! The family rooms and backyards were cited as the two rooms that would be missed most if they were to move

• Finally, residents appreciate the sense of community. People value their neighbors and feeling safe at all times

While physical amenities and the natural beauty at Estrella consistently receive high praise, it is the positive experience with the people in the community that a majority of residents cite as the deciding factor in purchasing an Estrella home. More than 50 percent

of residents surveyed said that the overall feeling of community was a major factor. More than 35 percent pointed to a positive experience with knowledgeable, friendly and helpful sales representatives and community members as a key factor in the decision to buy a home in Estrella.

As the developer of Estrella, we value resident input and refer to this information when determining where we need to improve and direct long-term community planning. In a previous resident survey, we noticed many residents had asked for additional facilities to compliment a social lifestyle and community bonding. The upcoming residents club, Presidio, will feature many of the requested amenities such as meeting spaces and a café and beer/wine bar.

We appreciate your participation in the recent survey. We are always looking for feedback and would like to remind residents that your input can be shared with our staff at the Information Center or Starpointe Residents Club at any time, and that you don’t have to wait for the next survey to be heard.

Estrella Landscaping Update & Lawn TipsBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

We have continued to work on the common area landscaping throughout Estrella. We have completed the installation of the

annual flowers, installed the winter lawn in select areas and completed the landscaping in areas around the pool at Starpointe Residents Club for the re-grand opening of the pool.

As we continue with our landscape maintenance cycles, we will start our renovation pruning of certain species of plants so that they can grow and bloom within the space that they have to grow. This process helps the plant by stimulating new growth and flowering and is recommended by the Arizona Landscape Contractors Association, Sustainable Landscape Management practices.

We will continue with our horticultural plan to keep the grass fed and to provide the nutrients necessary for healthy root growth in the turf areas that we did not overseed. This will help the turf break its dormancy in the spring by giving it a head start on the growing season.

In your own landscape, be sure to adjust your watering for the cooler weather as plants do not require as much water as they did during the hot summer months. Take advantage of any rains we receive by turning off your controllers until the soil dries out.

Keep in mind that frosty nights may be right around the corner. If you have frost-sensitive plants be sure to locate your frost cloths and have them handy.

communityEstrella Trailblazers Enjoy Moonlight HikeBy Estrella Trailblazers Hiking Club

There is something beautiful about the desert at night. Everything looks different. When you combine the beauty of the Estrella community,

a full moon and a climb to where we can see the lights of our homes, it’s really stunning. During cooler weather and during the full moon, the Estrella Trailblazers hiking group often takes to the trails at night. The trails we have covered at the FINS (Fantasy Island North Single-Track) during the day take on new shapes and sounds in the evening. It’s a different world with the hoot of an owl or the yip of a coyote to provide some background music. Our route includes a stop half way up North Star to view the moon and the warm lights of Estrella lighting up the surrounding area. Come join us sometime! We do a variety of hikes for all levels of fitness. Our next “almost” full moon hike will start at 6:00 p.m. at the FINS parking area on Westar Drive on Tuesday, November 24. Contact information for the Estrella Trailblazer group can be found on the last page of this magazine under Groups.

“Estrella by moonlight is awesome! By the full moon it’s even better. This was my first hike

as a new resident and it could not have been better. Great introduction to a great group and activity. For a new perspective on the

community this is an outing that you should try.” – Fred Wordell, Estrella Resident

Giving ... A Wonderful Act of Compassion>>> celebrating estrella

For many of us, November and December bring thoughts of getting together, enjoying one another, reminiscing and giving to others.

Estrella residents are welcome to join the Estrella CCMC team and fellow neighbors in helping the three organizations listed at right.

Please take a moment and read about them. If your heart is led to give, please drop off your items to Starpointe Residents Club by Thursday, December 3, 2015, which just happens to be ‘Starpointe’s Grand Re-Opening’. A list of needed items is located on www.LifeInEstrella.com. Thank you in advance for your generosity in giving during this holiday season.

Learning More About the F. Scott FitzgeraldsBy Estrella Book Club

Although our November selection is a novel, it reads like a larger-than-life biography. Names familiar to us – F. Scott Fitzgerald,

Ernest Hemingway, Sheilah Graham, and, yes, Zelda Fitzgerald – become people we get to know with a fresh lens in this well-researched book. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler is so much like biographical work that one has to be cautioned to remember it is actually fiction.

Many of us remember The Great Gatsby and its author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Zelda’s story certainly encompasses her husband’s life, but this novel is really uniquely Zelda’s story. We see how a young Southern girl wants to marry well and lead an exciting life. We see how difficult it was for women growing up in 1920s America to find their own worth. We see a woman seriously affected by her times, her personality, alcohol in abundance and the luminaries who surround her. F. Scott is but one of her problems. Theresa Anne Fowler does an excellent job of painting

Zelda’s story in words. Fowler doesn’t merely tell us Zelda’s story, she shows it to us. It unfolds before us in all its glorious mess.

Psychiatry was still in its infancy during Zelda’s lifetime and we see some of its early practices used in Zelda’s treatment. We get to participate in the life of early Hollywood, if only vicariously.

Come join us for a lively discussion on Wednesday, November 11, at 10:00 a.m. at Starpointe Residents Club. New members are always welcome and help us grow. Over the past year we have welcomed several who now are regulars with us. Call Nina Adair at 623-810-3494 if you have questions. We would love to have you join us!

turkey two times: tetrazzini By Estrella Resident

ingredients: 4 tbsp butter (1/2 stick) 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 lb white mushrooms, quartered 1 c dry white wine 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1/4 c flour 4 c turkey or chicken broth 8 oz cream cheese (one package) 3 c Thanksgiving turkey, shredded or diced 1 1/2 c frozen green peas 1 c grated Monterey Jack cheese 1 c chopped black olives 1/2 c grated Parmesan cheese 4 slices crispy bacon chopped 12 oz thin spaghetti broken in half and cooked (can substitute cooked elbow macaroni)1 c Panko bread crumbs

directions: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat and add the garlic. Add the mushrooms, wine, salt and pepper, stirring occasionally until the liquid reduces by half (about 3 – 4 minutes). Sprinkle in the flour and stir to combine. Pour in the broth, stir and continue to cook until the sauce has thickened (about 3 to 4 minutes). Add the cream cheese and stir until smooth. Add the turkey, peas, Monterey Jack, olives, Parmesan and bacon. Stir until all ingredients are combined well. Add the spaghetti and stir (If mixture seems too thick add ¼ - ½ cup of broth). Pour the mixture into a 9 x 13 casserole dish or your favorite large casserole dish. Sprinkle on the Panko bread crumbs and bake until the crumbs are golden brown and the casserole is bubbly (about 20 to 25 minutes).

CITY>>> city of gooDyear

Get Engaged: Citizen’s Academy Needs YouBy Mayor Georgia Lord

President John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.” In a similar way,

I am asking you – residents of Goodyear – to get engaged in your city government and see what you can do to make your city the best possible place to live by participating in the Citizen Academy.

The Citizen Academy is a seven-week community leadership program that provides city residents the unique opportunity to interface with elected officials, city management and department directors to learn how the City of Goodyear operates. Specifically, the course delves into the City’s organizational chart, providing in-depth information on critical departments and services such as Public Safety, Public Works, Engineering, City Court, Economic Development and many others.

There’s room for 40 people to sign up. The program is free and includes course materials and snacks.

The program begins January 12. Sessions are on Tuesdays and last between 90 minutes to two hours. You never know, maybe one participant or more could become the next mayor.

Don’t laugh! I didn’t plan to run for council or mayor until a few years after I was coaxed into attending the academy by the late Gary Gelzer, who served on our City Council. I was glad I did. I wanted to learn more about City government. After graduating from the academy, City staff members wanted me to serve on a committee as chairman of the City Center Committee. The Citizen Academy provided me a foundation to first run for City Council in 2005. I learned a great deal and I know you will, too. I hope to see you there.

For more information, visit: http://www.goodyearaz.gov/residents/citizen-academy or call Rachel Aja, Assistant to the Mayor, at (623) 882-7781.

Estrella Resident Receives Copper Apple Award By Sharon Marine, Principal

The Copper Apple Award is the highest award bestowed annually by the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics to recognize

excellence in mathematics education in Arizona. Each year, the AATM Executive Board chooses one recipient from all of the nominations sent in from the entire state of Arizona for the teaching award and one recipient for the leadership award.

The 2015 recipient of the Copper Apple Award for Teaching in Mathematics, Penny Roubison, a third grade teacher from Liberty Elementary School, was selected to be recognized for her outstanding contributions in fostering an interest in mathematics among students. She and her husband Mike, also a fellow educator, have lived in Estrella for 15 years with their two sons, one who is in 7th grade at Westar and the other attends ASU.

Life is better in Estrella

The kids are back in school. Summer vacations have come and gone and “getting back into the swing of things” has become a familiar

saying. The end of summer gives rise to the juggling act of more activities crammed into our days: school, heavier workloads, after school activities, social and family obligations. Everyone is maxed out!

During these busy times it’s easy to get sidetracked with obligations and put our health on the back-burner. Ultimately this is when the easy, quick and unhealthy behaviors take over. We may focus on our family life or work life and forget to feed our soul or our physical life. This is when life can get out-of-whack and we lose ourselves. It’s the mind-body connection we hear about so much and they directly affect each other.

The feeling of being out-of-whack takes a toll on us when life’s balance is off. When we begin to feel this way, it is important to recognize it and start to focus on all aspects of our life to restore the balance. When we pay attention, we find harmony. Ultimately, this balance is crucial for complete health.

In Estrella, there are many ways to help find the healthy balance you need in your life. Making the time to come to the Club for a workout is a great way to focus on your physical health, but maybe you need to come and just relax and utilize the Club’s pool for a leisurely swim. Or how about just taking a stroll around our beautiful lakes? This is a great way to get some fresh air and light exercise. Do you need to get out socially for some balance? How about taking advantage of one of the many

Estrella social opportunities to help put harmony back into your life? Perhaps a healthy lunch at the Players Grill at Estrella Golf Club is what you need!

We want your life to be balanced and in harmony and we want to do everything we can to help you achieve a balanced life. If you aren’t sure where to start or how we can help you, please stop in the club and ask how we can help. Take advantage of the Adult Fitness Orientations or even the Very Important Teen program. We can familiarize you with everything the fitness center has to offer and you can meet the staff who will make your Starpointe experience life changing.

Life is about balance. Life is better at Estrella.

GIVING BACK AT ESTRELLA:

HOME IMPROVEMENT - DIY (DO IT YOURSELF):A great idea for home improvement that can help to maximize your budget is by way of do-it-yourself projects, or DIY. These types of projects can be very budget friendly and often be incredibly rewarding as a homeowner.

Here are a few DIY tips/décor ideas to freshen up your home:

Bathroom – Make it your own: Take your favorite paint or pattern and create an eye catching accent wall. There are plenty of simple DIY painting techniques that create character and texture. Using chalkboard paint on the accent wall will allow you to adjust your bathroom design at the stroke of the eraser, and kids can mark up the wall to their hearts desire without any damage. Another great idea for an accent wall is to use bold colors to create a fun stripe or geometric pattern. All you need is paint, painter’s tape, a tape measure and a level. Once you have your base paint color selected and on the wall, create your design with the tape, using a level to ensure your lines are straight and even. Use your accent color to paint inside the taped lines. Once dry, peel off the tape and enjoy your finished creation!

Bedroom – Create your own headboard: A great way to add some excitement and pop to your bedroom is to use items from around your home to create a DIY head-board. Repurpose old wooden doors to create a custom, rustic look. For a more distressed finish, apply Vaseline over a dry base coat of paint, let the Vaseline dry, then apply the top coat. Let dry and sand lightly. For children’s rooms, take various colored pool noodles and fasten them to the wall using a wall-mounting adhesive to create a fun, colorful and durable headboard.

Kitchen – Install a budget backsplash: A pegboard backsplash allows for extra storage as well as display space. The inexpensive panels can be fastened to the wall, and then hooks from the hardware store are used to hang utensils and kitchen gadgets.

DIY projects can be a lot of fun and transform an ordinary space into something extraordinary. New to woodworking, painting, etc.? Consider taking a class or reading online tutorials to get started. Budget-friendly DIY projects are the perfect way to personalize every room in your home. For more ideas, visit the recent blog post on estrella.com: “To save or to splurge? The holidays are a great time to reflect and be thankful for all of the opportunities we have been granted, and to turn our focus on the needs of others. For the upcoming holiday season there are many wonderful charitable programs in the local Phoenix area, providing you the opportunity to give back.

Visit the websites Volunteer Match (www.volunteermatch.org), a web service that aims to strengthen communities by making it easier for people to find good causes; or HandsOn Phoenix (www.handsonphoenix.org), an affiliate of the HandsOn Network, which is an innovative alliance of volunteer organizations working to build community through service and civic engagement.

Volunteering as a family is another great way to get involved and help instill positive values in children. Opportunities to volunteer as a family can be found through the organization, Families Giving Back. This organization has been working with

nonprofits throughout the Valley to develop programs that families with children of any age can experience. This is great for parents who wish to start getting their children involved, even at a young age. For more information, please visit www.familiesgivingback.com.

Finally, an ongoing tradition in which the Estrella community gives back each holiday season is through the City of Goodyear’s Fill-A-Need program. The program works to brighten the holidays for families who have suffered loss of employment, injury or illness, abandonment or loss of loved ones. The program connects these families with generous gifts and donations from City of Goodyear employees, residents and local businesses.

Estrella residents can participate in the Fill-A-Need program by donating items such as new unwrapped toys, clothing and school supplies for children 17 and younger. Items are being collected at the Estrella Information Center or CantaMia Village Center now through Thursday, Dec. 3. For more information on how to get further involved with Fill-A-Need, please call the City of Goodyear at 623-882-7081.
