Starpointe is getting busier each day now that the weather is warmer and many

people are taking advantage of the pool and absorbing the great Arizona sunshine. I asked the staff what they like most about working

the front desk and here are their comments. The next time you visit Starpointe, introduce yourself and meet the staff of Starpointe Front Desk.

Mary ann Brungardt: What I like most about my job is the opportunity to interact with the great Estrella residents, being part of an excellent team and the scheduling flexibility offered by part-time positions. When not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, family and friends; occasional trips to visit family (precious grandchildren who live in Sweden); and the opportunity to go to the casino for a great concert.

Carol Foster: My job at Starpointe entry desk has allowed me to meet many interesting people I now call friends. During my free time, you will find me walking, bicycling, researching family genealogy and going on adventures with my husband and Estrella friends.

Margaret HedriCk: It is always a pleasure greeting residents and guests as they enter the Club! Our part-time work status allows us to enjoy hobbies and/or take on projects. I guess one could say we have the best of both worlds.

lyn MartHaler: After the move from Illinois I accepted a part-time position at Starpointe and have enjoyed it for over eight years. What I find most enjoyable about this job is that I am working in and for my own community and have been fortunate to meet many of my Estrella neighbors. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, outdoor activities, travel and spending time with my two adorable grandchildren.

terri ready: I like the people I work with as well as the residents – both adults and children. The flexibility is great. I like the mellow and friendly atmosphere that makes me enjoy coming into work. In my spare time, I like spending time with my kids, grandkids and husband. We always seem to laugh and have fun! I enjoy sports, traveling, and cooking – I’ve been told that I am a good cook.

Colleen sCHier: I really enjoy working the front desk at Starpointe. I have met many wonderful people that I would otherwise not have met. I also have the privilege of working with a great group of women. Working in the PreSchooner room and Youth club give diversity to the job. When not working I really enjoy seeing all that Arizona has to offer with my husband and my children (when they can visit). It

really is a beautiful place to live.

BarBara VaugHn: I love interacting with the residents and many have become friends. Our team is amazing! We can rely on each other and are also friends. Our lead, Mary Ann, is so accommodating. I have very little travel time and no traffic to worry about! In my off time my husband and I enjoy traveling. We also love to attend our grand-children’s sporting events and being with family.

Marilyn WoodruFF: I work in the PreSchooner Club and enjoy the children. If it is true that laughing adds years to one’s life, I should live a very long time. The children make me laugh and that makes my job so much fun! Swimming is what I do to relax.

All around the valley weeds are sprouting up and trees are growing fast. That

means all the beautiful vegetation in Estrella is blossoming and we are beginning to see those pesky weeds.

The Compliance Department is keeping a particularly close eye on this in an attempt to assist homeowners to spot the potential issue before the problem gets too out of hand. Many notices have been sent out as friendly reminders and more will continue to go out in order to stay on top of the spring weeds. We understand it is not always well received to get a letter in the mail from your Homeowners Association, so please ensure the yards are receiving additional care and maintenance during this time.

When it comes to preserving the visual appeal of your front yard, there are many different options when it comes to yard maintenance. Weeds can be removed by using pre-emergence, post-emergence, or the good old fashioned method of pulling weeds by hand.

There are also many great landscaping companies available that are able to remedy weeds as well as trim overgrown trees and also offer continual care year around.

As fellow homeowners, we understand the time and effort it requires to keep yards in tip top shape. However, let’s work together to continue to maintain Estrella! We appreciate the time that residents put into their homes and yards as it does show. Keep up the good work.

• To apply best practices for the use of owner and builder assessments by continuously tracking expenses for the Estrella Joint Committee (EJC), Starpointe, and other associations until all work budgeted in 2015 is complete

• To monitor the update and results of the community’s Reserve Study to be completed no later than August 1, 2015

• To complete review of the EJC, ECA and VCA Associations’ “cash flow” positions by July 1, 2015, along with recommended long-term targets and plans for achieving those targets

In their spare time, Committee members enjoy Estella’s many amenities: walking the lakes, playing bridge, bingo and trivia at Starpointe Residents Club, and enjoying family time and the new pickleball courts!

Goodyear Lakeside Music Festival returns Submitted by Newland Communities

We are excited to announce that the Goodyear Lakeside Music Festival will return to Estrella for

a fun-filled day of food, art and of course fantastic live music on Saturday, April 11 from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. After overwhelming support from the community for last year’s festival, the West Valley Arts Council (WVAC) and the City of Goodyear are gearing up for another show stopping event. Designed to be a true celebration of arts and culture, the 2015 festival will feature more than a dozen bands, on two stages, with a wide range of genres – everything from rock and mariachi to bluegrass, jazz, French indie and beyond. The free event, which is open to the public, will feature an arts expo, beer and wine garden and food vendors.

The Estrella community has long been a supporter of the arts and the West Valley Arts Council. The WVAC is the only regional organization that focuses on all disciplines of the arts and works to bring concerts, theatre, dance performances and public art exhibits to the West Valley. The City of Goodyear also places a high priority on the arts and arts education, providing family friendly cultural programs such as the Goodyear Family Concert Series and the annual Ballet Under the Stars, hosted here in Estrella.

The Goodyear Lakeside Music Festival will be held at the Estrella Lakeside Amphitheatre. For more information visit westvalleyarts.org and keep up to date with the latest news by following #GLMFest on Twitter and Facebook.

LANDSCAPE>>>snippets

Spring is here – Time to Prep for SummerBy Four Peaks Landscape Management, Inc.

Spring has arrived and now is a great time to be out in the landscape getting it ready for the coming summer months. A couple of items

should be taken care of now if they haven’t been already. Remove all frost damage from plants. Given that we have had a mild winter the damage was probably minimal; however, do not let that discourage you from thinning out and rejuvenating your frost sensitive plants. Pruning stimulates new growth, and new growth is what produces blooms. You will see your plants recover from the pruning very quickly and you will see new color as well.

You may have noticed some insects in your landscape. Most will be here for a short period of time, causing minimal damaged to plants. If you see them you can use water to spray them off or there are products available such as insecticidal soaps and systemic herbicides for tougher problems. Please choose the product you are most comfortable with and follow the directions on the label.

Tune up your irrigation system by operating each valve from the controller and inspecting the plants and areas it waters to ensure you do not have any

leaks or damaged components. Also check your soil moisture and if necessary increase your water days to provide additional water. Remember you want to let the soil dry out a bit before you add more water. Make sure you move your drip emitters to your trees away from the base of the tree and out to the ends of the branches. This is where the root system is and will help establish stronger roots away from the base of the tree to provide greater support.

If you have winter grass planted in your lawn you will want to be sure that you are lowering the cutting height of the turf as we progress toward the summer. This will help with a better transition from rye grass to summer bermuda. Feed your turf now with a well balanced fertilizer and keep your water consistent; make sure not to over water.

We have a couple of months to enjoy the outdoors and our landscapes. With a little work now it will be beautiful for the summer. Inspect the plant looking for new leaves sprouting out from the branches of the plant.  You can trim off all of the damaged foliage back to the point where you are seeing the new growth.  Your plants will grow back from this point.

If you have not been able to prune back your non frost sensitive landscape plants you still have time. As you have been seeing throughout the common area landscape we have been continuing our renovation pruning.  Some of the species that we started with are already growing back.  Don’t forget that a good rule of thumb is to prune the plants back after they bloom.  A little time in the landscape now will help reduce the time you need to spend in the landscape later.

Enjoy the great weather and all of the activities throughout the valley this spring.

LifeInEstrella.com Update requires volunteersSubmitted by Communications Committee Members

Estrella needs a major refresh of its website. The information needs of our community have changed considerably over the past years and

web technologies now offer a variety of easy-to-use information access and delivery methods.

Community information is vital to all of us. To help us improve our information channels we are initiating an Estrella website update project. The project team will help gather and compile requirements, collect and evaluate information from web providers, evaluate web demonstrations, assist with vendor selection, help facilitate a website pilot test program and monitor implementation and testing of our new Estrella website.

This process will probably take a year from inception to implementation. The Estrella Communications Committee will be responsible for orchestrating the process and timeline of the project.

But to make this very important community project

happen, we need team members who have the interest, time and background to participate. Skills we are looking for include: business decision making, understanding of web technologies, creativity and experience with technology vendors/service levels, user data gathering and people interfacing skills. If some of these skills are included in your background and you are willing to commit to participating for the duration of the project then we would love to hear from you. Submit your application on www.LifeInEstrella.com under ‘Contact Us’ before April 20, 2015.

>>> clubs & Groups

Estrella Guitar ClubBy Alex Hall, Estrella Guitar Club

Playing the guitar has been a passionate activity for me since I was a “Beatles-struck” eight year old when I began taking lessons. My

interests in guitar and music have evolved to the extent of my having been a guitarist and vocalist in numerous musical performance projects, mostly on the east coast where I was born and lived most of my life. I have learned so much from playing with other musicians over the years. The camaraderie, enthusiasm, exchange of ideas, and the pure fun of playing music with others are what inspired me to begin this club.

Organized and periodic meetings with people who share common interests is a great way to foster friendship and community values. However, I believe that there is too little being organized for the sake of promoting young people’s appreciation for and education in music – especially during these times of pervasive computerized synthesizing, virtual

experience technology, and video games.

I invite anyone with any musical ability or interest, not just in the guitar, regardless of their level of skill or talent, to stop in during one of our sessions occurring on the second Saturday of each month and participate in our discussions about the music pop-culture scene, the artists and entertainers involved in it, playing techniques, rock ‘n’ roll history, the future of the recording industry, and other related issues, as well as partaking in our demonstrations to let the “musician” in you come out. Just don’t forget to bring your acoustic guitar, or whatever it is you play.

Our small group of devotees will be having our fourth session this month and we hope to recruit as many interested participants as possible along the way.

CITY

The arts and culture scene in Goodyear is thriving – thanks to partnerships

among the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission, West Valley Arts Council, Agua Fria

Community Artists, Ballet Arizona, and Newland Communities at Estrella. They help bring events that provide entertainment for all ages. They also support the city’s mission of increasing awareness of arts and culture contributions to Goodyear’s economy and quality of life.

Whether it’s one of Goodyear’s premier events such as Ballet Under the Stars at the Lakeside Amphitheatre at Estrella, Tale of Two Cities Parade and Festival or Goodyear Lakeside Music Fest, also at Estrella – to be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 – I’m excited and proud to say the number of attendees at these types of events is growing.

On a smaller scale, the Hot Coffee Lecture Series held monthly in the community room at Total Wine, 1416 N. Litchfield Road, is drawing large crowds. The lectures provide insight to the arts profession and the crafts of others. Every time I attend one of these lectures, I learn something new and walk away in awe of the work.

This past November, the annual Chalk Art in the Park – which allows professional and young artists to draw their work on the sidewalks of Goodyear Community Park – drew more than 700 attendees. That’s three times the number of people who attended the first one in 2012!

Other new events overseen by Guylene Ozlanski, arts and culture coordinator for Goodyear, and Brian Driscoll, chairman of the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission, also are being well received. The recent Art of Cultures Expo, a first-time event showcasing ethnic groups and art of the West Valley, was attended by 1,500 at Palmateer Park on Feb. 7.

And just around the corner, we’ll soon host a reception for the spring portion of a program that is near and dear to my heart – the Mayor Select Art program. It was my

goal to provide Goodyear elementary and high school students with opportunities to win scholarship money for producing fine pieces of art including paintings, photography, and drawings. Dr. Olga Dolghier of Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry has been the main sponsor of the event and we’re grateful for the role she has played in making those scholarships possible. These young artists are the future and already have made an impact on Goodyear’s arts scene.

I truly believe there’s a great need for a consistent exposure to arts and culture as it provides an additional venue for creative education, expression and enriching one’s life.

If you haven’t been to one of Goodyear’s arts and culture events, we’d like to see you there! To learn more about Goodyear’s arts and culture program visit www.goodyearaz.gov/arts.

SCHOOL BELL

The existing gifted program was based at Liberty Elementary as the geographic center of the school district. The program was very small

with about eight to twelve students. Upon reviewing the program and seeing how it could grow to service more of its Gifted Student population,  Liberty School District decided to move the program to Westar Elementary in Estrella. This was due to the fact that a majority of identified Gifted Students were based in the Estrella Community.  In just one year the program has grown to 50 students.

Currently, the program has two classrooms. Grades three and four combination classes are taught by Connie Crowley.  Grades five and six combination classes are taught by Kimberley Ainsworth. They hope to increase the program with additional grade levels.

Identification of giftedness is a challenge in helping these types of programs grow. Oftentimes, parents, especially first time parents, don’t know their child is gifted.  Additionally,  inexperienced teachers might have a hard time identifying a child is potentially gifted.  What does gifted look like? It is very difficult to see…sometimes poor behavior and bad grades can mask the fact that a child is gifted.  Also, just because a child is at the top of their class,  doesn’t necessarily mean they are gifted.

There are lots of reasons why parents don’t get their children tested.  Testing involves:

• Parents giving permission for testing

• Child must be parent referred or teacher referred for testing

Children from other districts that have tested as gifted on a state qualified test can also be admitted to the program. In order for the child to be enrolled, they must qualify as Gifted in two of three areas tested: Verbal, Non-verbal and Quantitative. They must place in the 97% or above percentile in order to qualify.

Westar currently follows a specialized curriculum for gifted students.  Their hands-on program called “Envision” utilizes self-driven projects and helps students learn to motivate themselves while learning

independently.  With Common Core standards, the class uses Engage NY math curriculum, which, instead of taking the children further ahead in math from a linear direction, it teaches them to work deeper into a subject. This is often a challenge for gifted students, who find answers that come easily to them, but have a difficult time explaining how they got those answers.

The class also focuses on social and emotional skills.  This helps with the student’s communication. They may not know the answer and learn it is okay to be wrong.  In this environment and with different areas of giftedness, the children are able to learn from their peers, instead of always being at the top of their class where everyone learns from them, but they do not receive the same benefit.  Mrs. Crowley firmly believes in teaching the children to be proud of their strengths.

The program also has support for the parents of gifted students, and conducts parent institutes for them.  Examples of upcoming programs are “Motivation and Underachievement,” and “How to parent the Successful Child.”

Mrs. Crowley has taught for 20 years, the past 10 years working with Gifted students. Before becoming a teacher, she worked in Behavioral Health in the healthcare system, and began her career in the school system as a Behavioral Therapist.  This background experience makes her uniquely qualified to work with Gifted students.

Ms. Ainsworth has been teaching for 18 years, the last seven years in the Liberty School District.  Four of those years have been with a gifted cluster model classroom. She has been teaching with the gifted students in the five and six combination class. Two of her own children were in the gifted program in the Liberty School District, so she is well-informed with the program from both a parent and a teacher perspective.

If you have any questions on this unique and pioneering program, please contact Connie Crowley, at [email protected].

We value & Welcome Our residents

At Starpointe Residents Club, we value and welcome our residents’ feedback on how we can improve the club. As we continue to evolve

as a club, it is important for us to gather research and listen to our residents’ input on new opportunities in the fitness industry and club operations.

There are several avenues that a resident can take to communicate with us. We have always maintained an open door policy. If for some reason you are unable to speak to a staff person, we welcome you to visit our website (www.LifeInEstrella.com) and use the “Contact Us” link on the left hand side of the page. This generates an e-mail to all appropriate staff members so that your suggestions or concerns can be attended to. If you are not registered through our website, please take two minutes of your time to register as this will keep you updated with our weekly E-Blast that contains important community-wide information. In addition, this month we will be conducting a survey between April 10 and April 20

to get your feedback on Starpointe Residents Club. There will be a paper version of the survey at the Starpointe front desk and also an online version. This survey will enable us to address immediate questions, directly and confidentially with you.

Your feedback allows us to understand ways we can improve the residents’ experience and stay current with the latest club industry trends. Starpointe Residents Club is designed and managed to be a club, not a gym. It is a place for residents and guests to interact and have fun with one another whether that be while exercising, eating at the café, as part of one of our many resident groups or attending one of our wonderful events. We want the club to be part of your daily routine and feel like your second home. The highest compliment we can receive is when you feel comfortable enough to ask your friends, family, and co-workers to move to Estrella because of the wonderful amenities it has to offer.

BUNCO, Anyone?

As I stopped by to speak with some of the participants and take photos, I could not believe the excitement in the room. This

was before the game began. Once the game commenced there were tons of smiles, laughter and a few outbursts of screams. Upon leaving the room to prepare this short article, I found out over 59 million women play BUNCO and 27 million play regularly. That is a lot of laughter going on!

BUNCO is a social dice game involving 100 percent luck and no skill. There are no decisions to be made - just scoring and a simple set of rules. The object of the game is to accumulate points and to roll certain combinations on the dice. The winners receive prizes, sometimes for the highest score, lowest score, or the most BUNCOs. If you are curious to

learn more about BUNCO, come out and watch the ladies play BUNCO. They meet on the fourth Monday of every month at Starpointe Residents Club with an unpretentious potluck at 6:00 p.m. Rolling of the dice at 6:30 p.m. starts a fun and exciting game of BUNCO.

You are invited to contact Betti Guenther for additional information at 623-242-7877.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: MIKE “ODIE” PARK Q&Aaround our community, plus my “dirt brother” friends made me join. It has been exciting to see our community out there on the trails enjoying our beautiful desert.

4. What is the Trails Committee up to these days? What can you tell us about the new “Up There” trail? We are busy! We are still in the process of cleaning some of the trails that were punished with the heavy rains last fall, as well as working with Newland to open up more trails east of Estrella Parkway. “Up There” is the latest trail, and it parallels Estrella Parkway from the fire department to the high school for 1.65 miles. This trail offers incredible views of our community and showcases the beauty of our local desert.

5. Do you have family with you at Estrella? I have a great and supportive family, which includes my wonderful wife of 30 years, Debbie and my three strapping sons Andy, Mat and Kyle. I also have two dogs - Clark the super dog and Scotty his sidekick, two cats that tolerate me and one fish. My wife is also known as the “Trail Widow.” Thanks Honey!

6. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I am usually out in the desert building new trails or maintaining old ones, as well as hiking, or riding my mountain bike. I also love to snow ski, but unfortunately I don’t get to do that as much as I would like.

Estrella boasts more than 20 miles of hiking and biking trails that offer the opportunity to stay active and enjoy the great outdoors while taking in the beautiful desert landscape and mountain views. For more information on Estrella’s trail system, or for information on how to get involved with the Trails Committee, please contact the HOA at 623-386-1112.

The Estrella community thrives thanks to the hard work and dedication of its residents and their hands-on approach to creating a great place to live. The Estrella Trails Committee is a prime example of the impact that residents are able to make in the community. Committee members devote their free time to building new trails while maintaining Estrella’s

extensive network of existing trails to ensure an enjoyable experience for all residents. One particular member, Mike Park, otherwise known as “Odie,” saw an opportunity to help make the trails at Estrella a top-notch amenity for outdoor enthusiasts and decided to join the Trails Committee, with a little push from his committee friends. Odie was kind enough to answer some questions in order to shed some light on the wonderful work of the Estrella Trails Committee and to share his story and connection with the community.

1. How long have you lived in Estrella? 17 years. We lived in Spanish Bay for 15 years and now reside in Serenity.

2. What do you enjoy most about Estrella? I can sail, hike and bike all in the same day! I love the outdoors and have grown to love the beauty of the Sonoran desert. All of my great friends from the Air Force and mountain biking community live here too.

3. What inspired you to join the Trails Committee? We had “trails” but not the kind I really wanted to ride or hike, so I was inspired to build more single tracks in and

With tax day looming, now is the best time to think about the Arizona School Tax Credit for your 2015 taxes. The state tax credit provides a non-refundable individual tax credit for fees and cash contributions paid to public schools in Arizona for the support of extracurricular activities or character education programs. The credit is equal to the amount of fees paid or amount contributed up to $200 for single or head of household taxpayers and up to $400 for married taxpayers that file a joint return. Qualified taxpayers can receive credit for making a contribution to a K-12 public or charter school. Eligible activities may include, but are not limited to: band uniforms,

equipment or uniforms for athletics, scientific laboratory equipment or materials, or in-state/out-of-state trips for competitive events.

Estrella has three top-notch schools right here in the community. The School Tax Credit provides the opportunity for residents to support Estrella schools and the fantastic programs they offer. In return, contributors can receive a sizeable credit on their state taxes. For more information and a full list of eligibility guidelines for the public Arizona School Tax Credit, visit www.azdor.gov.
