WHY BULGARIA

WHY BULGARIA

Located within the south-eastern tip of Europe, neighboring Romania to the north and Greece and Turkey to the south, you have a land steeped with history, swooping mountain ranges and costal paradises. In the past few decades, Bul-garia has developed into a leading tourist destination for both summer sun seekers and alpine winter sports enthusi-asts. The Bulgarian countryside is beautiful and unspoiled. The wines and food are excellent and if you want some cul-ture, there are plenty of monasteries hidden in the moun-tains where you can hide away from the dynamics of the city and reflect on life. Alongside its tourist attractions, Bul-garia is transforming into one of the digital and technologi-cal capitals of Europe, with no signs of slowing down. With a culture that has foundations built on strong social connec-tion, this makes relocating to Bulgaria easy for non-natives making it their home away from home. It is no surprise why so many people are relocating to Bulgaria.

Some basics: nodding means “no” and shaking one‘s head means “yes”.Holding your thumb between your ring and middle finger is considered an obscene gesture in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is considered an overall safe country. Use your common sense and you’ll enjoy your stay.

Never use a taxi without stickers on it and check the tariffs before getting in. The maximum price per km should be no more than 0.79 BGN. Yellow Taxi is our recommendation.

The best public transport to use is the subway (metro). The price of a ticket is 1.60 BGN for all transports.

The Bulgarian diet is mainly based on dairy and meat. However, even if you have food intolerances, or you’re veg-etarian/vegan you still have many op-tions. Bulgarian vegetables are very tasty and fresh.

You will see plenty of stray cats on the streets. If you’re inclined, buy some cat food and treat them to a nice meal.

Tattoo culture in Bulgaria is growing more and more, with Sofia becoming a hub for tiny shops with big talent. If you’re interested, there are also an-nual tattoo expos.

COST & CURRENCY

COST & CURRENCY

The currency of Bulgaria is called the lev or leva (plural). They come in the form of paper notes or coins, all of differ-ent value. Paper notes come in the form of: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 leva. Coins come in the form of: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 stotinki or 1 and 2 leva. The Cyrillic symbol for lev is лв and the currency code is BGN.Tipping in Bulgaria is not very strict, but is appreciated. A 10% tip is average for services such as restaurants, taxis, sa-lons, or bars. In some restaurants, however, a 10% service charge is already added so you aren’t expected to add a tip, though it might make the waiter happy. Taxi drivers typ-ically will keep the leftover change as their tip so it’s smart to keep smaller notes and coins on hand. It is not expected to tip hotel staff unless you are in a very high-end place.

RILA MONASTERY

PLACES TO GO

Rila Monastery was founded in the 10th century in honor of the ascetic St. Ivan of Rila. St. Ivan was deeply respect-ed during his lifetime and viewed as a saint. He prayed in a cave in solitude for over 20 years and people would go there to receive his blessing. People visiting the mon-astery can hike to visit the cave. In the 14th century the Ottomans looted and destroyed the Rila Monastery and people of the church rebuilt it in the 15th century. The mon-astery was destroyed again in 1833 by a fire and only one structure remained. It was rebuilt again by Peter Ivanovich and restored to its full glory. Monks still live there so you ofen times will see them walking around. The monastery exhibits centuries of historical and religious work and is a spectacular sight to see.

DEVIL’S BRIDGE

Devil’s Bridge, also known as Dyavolski Most, was built in the early 16th century by a renowned artisan, called Dimitar. The bridge is located near Ardino and crosses the Arda River. There are many myths and folklore that the locals tell about the bridge. One of the legends is that every bridge that had been built on that place couldn’t withstand the rough waters of the Arda River. The artisan made a deal with the Devil to receive the secrets of build-ing a bridge. Dimitar had to sacrifice his wife and engrave the footprint of the Devil on the Bridge.

If you time your day right and go at around noon on a sunny day you can see the reflection of the Devil from the bridge.

Families and friends give each other red and white tassels, known as mar-tenitsas, which are often times worn on your wrist. The tassels are taken off whenever you see a stork or a blos-soming tree which are symbols for the upcoming warmer season. Peo-ple exchange the tassels in hopes of luck, health, and happiness.

Fire dancing, commonly referred to as nestinarstvo in Bulgaria, takes place in villages near the southeast of Bul-garia. It mainly occurs on the holiday of St. Konstantin and Elena. The holi-day is a symbol of the seasons chang-ing from spring to summer. The danc-ers walk and dance barefoot on hot embers as if in a trance. According to tradition, the dancer is guided by the saint of the holiday and is said to have special gifts such as interpret-ing omens and communicating with the dead because of their connection with the saint.

Name days are respected similarly to birthdays. Anyone who is named after a saint gets to celebrate their name on name day. Saints are very respect-ed and have a great deal of religious value to Bulgarians. The celebration can include a big family meal and an exchange of gifts to the person whose name is being celebrated. Similarly, Palm Sunday, also known as Tsvetni-ca in Bulgaria, is the holiday of flow-ers and trees. People who are named after a flower or a tree celebrate their name on the last Sunday before Eas-ter. The celebration is the same as name day with a family meal and the exchange of gifts.

TRADITIONS

The Bulgarian Orthodox Easter tradi-tions involve different activities such as egg coloring, Easter beads, and egg breaking. It is tradition to color the eggs on the Holy Thursday before Easter. It is also tradition to dye the first egg red because it symbolizes the blood of Jesus and his rise from the dead. During the egg breaking, family members tap their eggs against each others with the intent to break them. The goal is to have the last unbroken egg because tradition says that they will have a year of good luck.

A large meal of many dishes is served and follows the forty-day Advent fast. The meal includes grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. One of the most im-portant parts of the meal is walnuts. It is tradition that each family mem-ber cracks a walnut in hopes of get-ting a good one. If the walnut is good then they are said to have a year of luck and success. If someone cracks a bad walnut then they will have bad luck. Additionally, it is tradition to hide a coin in a loaf of bread on Christmas Eve. Whoever finds the coin first will have good luck in the upcoming year. After the big Christmas Eve dinner, the table remains untouched until the next morning so the ghosts of ances-tors can come visit before Christmas morning. The table is then cleared the morning after Christmas Eve.

On New Year’s Eve it is tradition to chase away the evil spirits of the past year. Many children take part in this tradition in Bulgaria. Children prepare a special tree branch called a survach-ka and decorate it with many things like colorful string or dry food. The cel-ebration includes reciting verses with their families and lightly tapping their families on the back as symbolism of chasing the bad spirits away. Children are typically rewarded with sweets and gifts in exchange.

SOFIASofia is Bulgaria’s capital and larg-est city. Founded thousands of years ago, today the city continues to de-velop as the country’s cultural and economic center. The city has a pop-ulation of 1,250,000. Sofia has turned into the preferred destination for the world’s leading companies in the BPO industry. There is a large percentage of multilingual speakers from far and wide working in the BPO sector. In

2015 Sutherland announced a 10 mil-lion Euro investment in its Bulgaria operation to create 3,000 jobs in the country over the coming years show-ing the importance and opportunity that Bulgaria has to offer.Sofia is located in the western part of the country, on the lower slopes of Mountain Vitosha. The city’s altitude is 550 meters above sea level, the climate is moderate and continental.

The proximity to Vitosha gives peo-ple of Sofia great access to the moun-tains ski slopes in the winter. Bansko and Borovets ski resorts are just a short drive away.

The city of Sofia is at the crossroads of south-eastern Europe giving its residents great accessibility within a short drive to some of Europe’s most historic cities.

BURGASBurgas is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, situated in the south-east-ern part of the country, right on the Black sea coast. The climate is pri-marily continental with a distinct im-pact from the Black Sea. The Port of Burgas is the biggest sea port in the country and the Burgas Airport is the second largest airport where most of the international flights caring tour-ists are landing. Despite its location

on the seaside, the city is not famous as a beach resort, but more as a turn-ing point to the southern resorts like Sunny Beach, Pomorie, Sozopol, etc. which are all closely located. If you enjoy local seafood set on a beauti-ful coastline Burgas will be the per-fect place for you.Burgas is an important industrial center in Bulgaria, and the city also invests considerable resources in

tourism. In the past couple of years it has been voted several times as the best city in Bulgaria to live in. What attracts people here is mostly the sea. But the municipality supports multiple art and culture venues. After opening our office in 2014 we have seen Sutherland grow in the city and become one of the largest employ-ers in the area. Our presence and reputation in the city is paramount.

VARNAThe city of Varna is situated in the North-Eastern part of Bulgaria on the Black Sea shore providing a mild cli-mate throughout the year. Varna is the third largest city in Bulgaria with population of about 330 000 people. Because of its historical, economic and cultural significance it is often called the Sea Capital of Bulgaria. Along with that it is on the crossroad between the Middle East and West-

ern Europe. Nowadays Varna is the main port for both naval and com-mercial shipping and it has a cosmo-politan atmosphere. The city’s peculiar sea charm is sub-lime and moving. Ancient, medieval, renaissance and modern cultures mingle and coexist in the city. In Var-na you can see original artefacts of the oldest gold treasure in the world, dated between 4400 – 4200 BC. Of

the rich natural resources two are a must-see: The Marine Gardens, which are the largest in the Balkans and Euxinograd, the former Royal Palace. Varna is a city of old culture, living traditions and ambitious under-takings. Some 20% of its population are students. Varna has an impres-sive nightlife, especially during the summer season and many say that “the city never sleeps”.
