D E V O T I O N From the General Secretary...Biblical Egalitarianism

God created human beings in his own image, as male and female (Gen 1:27). We must have come across this verse frequently; this is the first instance where we notice a difference in gender in the Bible. The verse speaks of two things – gender equality and gender differentiation. Gender equality in the Bible does not mean men and women are identical; it means both were created in God’s image but differently created so as to complement and benefit one another by means of those differences.

If this is so, we need to ask ourselves why so many restrictions are placed on women in the name of custom, tradition and religion. Are these restrictions necessary? Why always women but not men? Our faith propagates equality and freedom from sin-ful bondage. We misinterpret the scriptures and use it to enforce discriminatory social laws rather than liberating ourselves from its narrow confines.

Very often, and too often, men deny ministerial rights to women because they consider it ‘masculine and unsuitable’. However, we find passages in the Bible where women have been anointed and called to minister (Ex 2:3-8; Lk 2:36-38). Biblical equality means that irrespective of gender, class, caste and race, all believers have equal rights to the ‘gifts and callings of the Spirit’. We are called to conform to the image of Christ (Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3: 18). As believers, both men and women are bound by oneness in Christ and have an obligation to respect each other as equals.

Dear friends,

The December – January – early February period covered in this issue of Life For All has seen a number of exciting events.

We were kept quite busy with preparing for the Healing Ministry Week. Working along with CHAI, CBCI and NCCI, we finalised the Bible Studies, Order of Worship and the poster, and posted them in early January. We trust you received them well in time. We have also been contacting mission hospitals and churches to encourage them to observe this special time. It was a joy to hear exciting ways in which institutions were planning to observe the Week, and how quite a few of them were using this opportunity to make concern for the environment an institutional priority. Some were going to actively sensitise schools and shops around them. We will share more details of institutional and church celebrations in a special section in the next issue of Life For All. Please do send in your reports by email or post before 15 March 2011.

Another significant event was an inter-faith consultation on women and child health. For the first time in our country, religious leaders from across India came together for two days to discuss and suggest strategies that religious leaders could take up on this issue.

In early December, I participated in the meeting of “The Strategy Group On Health And Healing” constituted by the World Council of Churches and DIFAEM, an interesting initiative to further strengthen the work of churches internationally.

The National Board of Examinations, which accredits the Diplomate of the National Board (DNB), had last year, instructed that all centres must accept a centralised counselling. At a consultation in October 2010 held at Bangalore Baptist Hospital, the participating CMAI and CHAI mission hospitals agreed that CMAI and CHAI should approach the National Board to protect our rights. This was done, but without any reply or response. The Association of National Board Accredited Centres (ANBAI) approached the Delhi High Court for a stay. CMAI, after discussions with DNB centres, has also impleaded in the case. At the time of going to print, the case was being heard in the Delhi High Court. Regardless of the outcome, what is important is that we, as a network, have stood up together, for our rights, not for our own benefit, but in order to help our member hospitals that work in more remote areas. Thanks to the many institutions and individuals who have phoned and emailed with their support.

Dear friends,Greetings in Jesus’ matchless name!

Seasons come, seasons go, but the promises of God remain forever. They are always ‘yes’ and ‘amen’ in Christ Jesus, who declared that apart from Him one can do nothing; but remember through Him we can do all things. Let’s remember this as we carry out our various activities!

On 10 and 11 December, we conducted the 2nd Emergency Medicine workshop at Nagpur, in association with Mure Memorial Hospital. At the time of writing this column, the 3rd Emergency Medicine Workshop was being planned for Bangalore on 25 and 26 February.

On 9 January, I had the privilege of be-ing part of the CMAI regional meeting at Vadodara, Gujarat, arranged by Dr Pradip Martin. During the same trip, I visited three member institutions in Gujarat – The Salva-tion Army Emery Hospital, Anand, Madam Robert’s Memorial-IP Mission Hospital, Borsad, and The Methodist Hospital, Nadiad. Please remember the latter two institutions and their needs in your prayers, especially their need for doctors.

As the New Year has set in fresh plans are being made. We also invite sugges-tions from our doctor members and Doc-tors Section Secretaries of all the 13 CMAI regions so that we can serve better.

As you are aware, we will be conducting Emergency Medicine workshops in all our 13 Regions across India. I would like to remind all the Regional Doctors Section Secretaries about our request that they find out the details of institutions / hospitals where we can conduct this workshop in their particular region, and also that they conduct regional doctors meetings in their regions.

Christmas Fellowship Programme Held by Nurses League, Karnataka Region

The Karnataka Region Nurses League held a half-day Christmas fellowship programme on 16.12.2010 at Rebekah Ann Naylor School of Nursing, Bangalore Baptist Hos-pital campus.

Nearly 100 staff and 92 students from various colleges and schools of nursing in and around Bangalore participated. Mrs Flora Edwin, Chief Nursing Officer, BBH, said the opening prayer. Mr Sunny Kuruvilla, Regional Secretary, Karnataka, welcomed the gathering and Dr Alexander Thomas,

Director/CEO, BBH, appreciated NL's work. Mrs Lalitha Varghese, Secretary, BNESIB, shared on the theme for 2011, Our World, Our Health. Carols were sung.

Mrs Jessie, Secretary, Women’s Wing, Ambassadors of Christ, spoke of the pur-pose of the Saviour’s birth. The programme ended with a prayer by the Programme Secretary, Ms Elizabeth. Santa Claus gave away gifts. Many nurses came forward to become CMAI members.

Dear friends,Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

Hope all of you are refreshed after the wonderful time we had at our National Conference. I certainly believe that all the inputs and inspirations are being put to use at the place of your work and learning.

"Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love." (Ephesians 1:4, Message Bible)

Many of us are caught up in the hustle-bustle of daily existence. We forget that the Lord Jesus made us the focus of His love even before time began. We need to be gripped by this fact and life-changing truth. We, as nurses who work in areas like the health sector, have ample opportuni-ties to show forth this love to the suffering multitude we meet daily!!

If the Lord could fill us with His spirit and if the love of Jesus were manifested through our lives, we would go back to the days when Jesus walked the streets of Jerusalem and the sick and the weary just waited for a loving glance or a touch.

Oh, what a higher calling we have than what we have reduced nursing in India to. How we fail to realise that the aching heart of India waits to be touched by the love of God. It may be a smile on the face of a little child or a soothing word of comfort to an ailing man.

May the Lord use each of us to show a unique part of Jesus and His love to the little worlds around us. The Lord has said… the harvest is plenty but the work-ers are few…

May we be counted among the few who are whole hearted!!

Amen.

Dear Members, Greetings from the Administrators Section!

There was hectic activity in preparing for the XXIV Workshop on Hospital and Health Services Management held at Bangalore from 31 January to 11 February 2011. We experienced the divine hand of God through the entire programme. A record number of 44 participants from 13 different states of India underwent this training. This workshop also had international participation as delegates from Liberia, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone and Bangladesh attended it. The participants went back energised so as to be more effective in their work environment.

Recently, I had the privilege of attending the Healthcare Leaders’ Forum organised in New Delhi by ehealth magazine. The aim was to highlight strategies and steps that will carry forward successful health care delivery in India. During the deliberations, it was highlighted that the combined annual growth rate of health care is 16 per cent. And with an estimated market size of USD 75 billion by 2012, the health care sector is expected to constitute as much as 8.5 per cent of the national GDP, employing more than 9 million people over the next couple of years. As health care service providers, we need to be geared to play a larger role during the time of this unprecedented need.

The third in the series of CMAI-MNRE workshops meant to create awareness about energy efficient practices and to empower health care organisations to opt for alternate technologies will be held at The Mirador, Andheri East, Mumbai on 11 March 2011. Details of the workshop can be downloaded from the CMAI website www.cmai.org

Please continue to pray for me, as I will be travelling to Orissa, MP and Maharashtra shortly.

Dear friends in Christ,We are planning at least one workshop every month in different disciplines. On 16 February, we had a 1-day workshop in Bangalore for Laboratory Technologists on the topic, Modern Trends in Laboratory Technology. With cooperation from all our members, activities in all disciplines in different regions are possible. Our re-gional sectional secretaries and members should take more initiatives in organising this. Although it may not be possible for me to be present at all places, CMAI will provide the necessary support.

Regional Conferences in all regions have to be organised with the coordination of regional secretaries. Please attend the Regional Conference in your region and motivate others to attend. The other major event planned for this year is the Bien-nial Conference, which is scheduled to be held from 3 to 5 November 2011 at Chennai. Please prepare now itself to be there and make a difference.

Regarding our degree programmes, the practical exams for the first batch will be over by March. The second batch will have theory exams in June – the end of this academic year. We have to work in many areas to reach our goal. I need your constant support and prayers.

You might have heard of the demise of Mr V Y George on 30 January 2011 at Thiruvananthapuram. He was a stalwart of 36 years in the field of Laboratory Technology. He worked for CMAI with zeal and enthusiasm. Dr Sara Varghese, former Convener, LTC, paid homage at his funeral on our behalf. Let us praise God for Mr George’s services to CMAI and to society at large.

With prayers and warm regards,

You may support CMAI's needs by sending contributions received on Healing Ministry Sunday. To those of you who have observed and sent in your contributions, I would like to express our sincere gratitude. If you were unable to observe the Healing Ministry Sunday on 13

February, you might consider observing it on one of the following Sundays and send in your contributions.

Some of my colleagues at CMAI’s New Delhi office presented the Gospel based on this year’s theme, Our World, Our Health, in the CNI, Methodist, ECI and independ-ent churches on 13 & 20 February. We are receiving encouraging comments and con-tributions from members of all Sections. We place on record our thanks to the pastors who gave us the opportunity and to those who sent in their contributions.

We had a 2-day retreat for the Andhra Pradesh regional chaplains / pastors on 11 & 12 January 2011 at Christian Medi-cal Centre, Pithapuram, AP. Rev Samuel Chinniah – Vice Chairperson of CMAI’s Chaplains Section and also the AP Re-gional Sectional Secretary, Chaplains – organised this. Rev Babu Rao, Professor, ACTC, was the Guest Speaker on Sharing The Pain.

We are planning to have the annual meeting of the DCPC & DPHM course coordinators, a fellowship get-together for the IELC Ambur synod pastors, and a 1-day workshop for the hospital chaplains of Tamilnadu & Puducherry regions at Bethesda Hospital, Ambur, in April.

May God be with you all as you prepare to observe Lent 2011.

Dear Members,The Christoffel-Blindenmission (CBM), Joseph Eye Hospital, Trichy, and CMAI held a planning and strategising meeting for some mission hospitals as part of a hospital strengthening project at Vellore from 28 to 29 January 2011.

CMAI has been supporting member in-stitutions by way of documentation. Review visits to Seventh-Day Adventist Medical Centre, Bangalore, and CSI Holdsworth Memorial Hospital, Mysore, which are part of our NABH accreditation initiative, were held in February.

I had a 1-day review meeting at the Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, with the quality team and staff from various departments with regard to progress on NABH accreditation. Most of the poli-cies have been developed as per NABH standards. At the time of writing, CMAI was planning to conduct a mock audit of the NABH preparedness of MMM Hospital in the first week of March 2011.

In the forthcoming review visit to the Northeast region, discussions with the core team on the gap analysis report, implementation strategies and project progress plan will be taken up. Support has been extended to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital, Nazareth Hospital and Bethany Hospital – all in Shillong.

CMAI also plans to bring all institutions it is working with for NABH on one common platform with the aim to exchange experi-ences, and find solutions to legal problems and operational hurdles in implementa-tion of the standards. To address these issues, a meeting was held in Bangalore on 9 February 2011. Invitees were Mercy Hospital, Kolkata, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, Pondicherry Institute of Medi-cal Sciences, Pondicherry, Seventh-Day Adventist Medical Centre, Bangalore, CSI Holdsworth Memorial Hospital, Mysore, and CSI Hospital, Bangalore.

The CEOs Forum meeting of CMAI member hospitals for the MP-Chhattis-garh and Gujarat regions will be held at Raipur on 19 March 2011. Dr M C Mathew, President, CMAI, has agreed to facilitate the discussions. Kindly pray for this meeting.
