The need for feedback In 1968, Dr. Keene Dimick, a chemist and university professor, was inspired to create the Lifecycle® Exercise Bike so he would know how long he’d been exercising, how far he had gone and how many calories he’d burned.

Revolutionary programsDr. Dimick also created the idea of programs, where the computer challenges the user based on time and level.

Gaining momentumEntrepreneurs Augie Nieto and Ray Wilson purchased the rights to the Lifecycle and introduced it to commercial fitness facilities. As the fitness industry grew, Lifecycle, Inc. grew along with it, introducing new products along the way to help people live a healthier lifestyle.

Life Fitness leads a healthy revolutionHealth clubs grew increasingly popular in the 1980s and 1990s, and with our treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers and strength equipment dominating the floor it made sense to rename the company Life Fitness. As the global leader in commercial fitness equipment, Life Fitness was a natural acquisition for Brunswick Corporation, the leader in recreation and our parent company since 1997.

Adding to our strengthRecognizing a fellow innovator in founder Gary Jones, Life Fitness purchased Hammer Stength, a revolutionary manufacturer of performance strength equipment, in the late 1990s.

Smart designWe create authentic exercise experiences for people through products that look good and perform brilliantly. Our internal industrial design, biomechanics and reliability teams provide tested, real world solutions that help people achieve better results.

Man and machineThe largest dedicated biomechanics team in fitness studies people as they move and interact with the machines. By examining the science of movement including range of motion and center of mass, plus how exercisers behave, we develop products that are easy for most people to use without the need for many adjustments.

Extreme testingOur on-site functional laboratories include mechanical, electrical, software, integrated, biomechanics and test labs representing a multi-million dollar investment. This exemplifies our commitment to developing the best equipment for use in facilities worldwide.

Having our own labs makes us more agile. We do more new product development because of the testing capability that exists here. If a new feature is developed, we can test it on its own as well as how it integrates with more proven technology.
