home�away�from�home.

friday night servicesOur�Friday�night�Shabbat�service�includes�music,�singing,�traditional�

and�creative�prayers�and�a�short�sermon�or�d'var�torah.��We�begin�with�

a�short�“PrOneg”�(pre-Oneg)�at�5:45�for�a�pre-service�nosh�and�chance�

to�greet�each�other.��At�6:15pm,�we�begin�our�service.��Children’s�Shabbat

Programming�is�offered�for�pre-school�to�third�grade�children.���We�offer

Shabbat�services�at�7:30pm�on�one�Friday�of�each�month.��Watch�your

Bulletin,�the�LBT�website�and�emails�for�these�dates.���

life at leo baeckshabbat morning minyan -��9:30amLeo�Baeck�Temple’s�Shabbat�morning�minyan�is�one�of�our�

community’s�greatest�jewels.��Though�it’s�called�a�minyan,�it’s�

in�no�way�limited�to�ten:��it’s�a�welcoming,�joyous,�vibrant,�

intellectually-stimulating�gathering�open�to�all.��Full�of�humor�

and�heart,�the�minyan�community�meets�on�the�second�and�

fourth�Saturday�of�every�month.�Some�members�sign�up�

to�give�the�d’var�Torah,�to�read�from�the�Torah,�and�to�read�

haftarah.��Others�come�to�check�it�out�–�to�sing,�pray,�learn�

and�be�in�community.��Our�clergy�join�with�members�to�create�

an�informal,�musical,�spiritual,�and�eye-opening�Shabbat�service.��

A�potluck�Kiddush�lunch�follows�each�service.��To�learn�more�

You�won't�want�to�miss�this�special�Shabbat�service�with�a�focus�on�

the�themes�of�the�festival. Following�the�service,�we�will�go�into�the�

Sukkah�to�shake�the�lulav�and�the�etrog.��Bring�your�own�picnic�and�

fulfill�the�mitzvah�of�eating�in�the�Sukkah.��Bake�your�favorite�harvest�

pie -�berry,�apple,�pecan�-�and�bring�it�to�share.

Simchat�Torah�celebrates�the�completion�of�the�annual�Torah

reading�cycle.��After�finishing�the�last�sentence�of�Deuteronomy,�

we�begin�the�new�cycle�immediately�with�the�beginning�of�Genesis.�

On�this�night,�we�unroll�the�entire�Torah�into�a�great�circle�and�

dance�with�the�Torah�scrolls.��The�joyous�celebration�concludes�

with�ice�cream�and�Israeli�dancing�for�all.��

Purim�is�a�festive�holiday�commemorating�the�rescue�of�the�Jews

of�Persia�by�Queen�Esther�and�her�uncle�Mordecai�from�the�evil

Haman.�The�story�is�read�aloud�and�when�Haman�is�mentioned�in�

the�Megillah�(scroll)�of�Esther,�people�scream�and�turn�noisemakers

called�“groggers”�to�drown�out�his�name.�

by�our�homespun�carnival�with�food,�prizes,�dunk�tank�and�fun!��

For�the�past�six�years�we’ve�had�more�than�400�

Leo�Baeckers�experience�a�weekend�away�at�the�

beautiful�retreat�center�of�Brandeis-Bardin�located�

on�3,000�acres�in�Simi�Valley.��This�all-inclusive�

weekend�features�a�climbing�tower,�swimming,�

tennis�courts,�25-hours�of�Shabbat,�great�children’s�

programming�and�more.��

This�year,�the�Community�Retreat�is�hosting�LBT’s�

2015�Scholar-In-Residence,�Alan�Morinis.�

We�are�thrilled�that�Alan�Morinis�is�joining�us�as�

our�Scholar-�in-Residence�this�year.��

Mr.�Morinis�is�the�founder�and�Dean�of�The�Mussar�Institute�and�an�active�interpreter�of�the�

teachings�and�practices�of�the�Mussar�tradition.�

Born�and�raised�in�a�culturally�Jewish�but�non-observant�home,�he�studied�anthropology�

at�Oxford�University�on�a�Rhodes�Scholarship.�For�the�past�sixteen�years,�the�nearly-lost

Jewish�spiritual�discipline�of�Mussar�has�been�his�passion,�a�journey�recorded�in�the�book

Climbing�Jacob’s�Ladder (Broadway�2002).��His�guide�to�Mussar�practice,�entitled�Everyday�

Holiness:�The�Jewish�Spiritual�Path�of�Mussar,�was�published�in�May�2007.��His�newest�book�

on�Mussar,�With�Heart�in�Mind,�was�published�in�August�2014.�

Building�a�Soulful�Lifewith�Scholar-in-Residence�Alan�Morinis

What�is�Mussar?

Mussar�is�a�path�of�contemplative�practices�and�exercises�that�have�

evolved�in�the�Jewish�world�over�the�past�thousand�years�to�help�an�

individual�to�pinpoint�and�then�to�break�through�the�barriers�that�

surround�and�obstruct�the�light�of�the�soul,�the�obstacles�that�prevent�

a�person�from�becoming�the�best�human�being�he�or�she�can�be.�Mussar�

is�a�treasury�of�techniques�and�understandings�that�offers�immensely�

valuable�guidance�for�the�journey�of�our�lives.��The�Jewish�community�spawned�Mussar�to�help�people�overcome�the�

inner�obstacles�that�hinder�them�from�living�up�to�the�laws�and�commandments�that�form�the�code�of�life.�The�human�

reality�Mussar�addresses�is�actually�universal,�and�the�gifts�it�offers�can�be�used�by�all�people.

sessions. No�experience�is�necessary,�just�a�curious�mind�and�open�heart.

we�move�into�our�6th�year�with�much�anticipation.��We�want�to�give

Saturday,�February�7,�2015�-� all�day,�for�all�ages���

On�a�single�Shabbat�last�spring,�there�were�more�than�40�sessions�

conducted�at�Leo�Baeck�Temple�over�an�eight-hour�time�period�

with�more�than�300�people�in�attendance.��Many�sessions�were�sold

out�within�the�first�week�of�open�registration.��The�question�is,�will�

you�be�able�to�sign�up�in�time�to�get�to�attend�your�first�choice�

session�this�year?��The�bigger�question�is,�what�will�you�present�at�

this�year’s�Yom�Limmud?��

Yom�Limmud�is�not�just�for�grown-ups!��Pre-K�through�6th�grade�

students�are�invited�to�Camp�Baeck,�a�special�full-day�of�fun�and�

learning.��Parents,�you�are�welcome�to�sign�your�children�in�and�out

throughout�the�day,�so�that�they�can�attend�a�Yom�Limmud�session�

and�learn�with�you,�and�also�know�that�your�children�are�having�fun

while�you�are�learning�on�your�own.��

Since�2011,�we�have�engaged�in�more�than�300�one-to-one�conversations

within�our�temple�community.�Out�of�these�conversations,�we�identified�

the�economy,�health�care,�and�education�as�the�problems�that�most�affect

the�members�of�our�temple.�Working�with�our�partners�across�the�city�

and�on�a�statewide�level,�we�have�created�positive�change�and�we�have�

seen�results!

We�are�working�with�other�community�stakeholders,�One�LA�and�Mayor

Garcetti�to�create�more�than�100,000�jobs�and�get�80,000�cars�off�the�road�

by�building�rapid�transit�along�the�405�corridor.��Our�health�care�team�has

been�involved�with�health�insurance�options�and�the�implementation�of�

Covered�California.�Our�community�building�team�networked�our�affinity

groups�with�one�another,�and�expanded�the�Lifecycle�list,�building�a

stronger,�more�cohesive�LBT�community.

Finally,�we�are�part�of�Reform�CA,�a�powerful�effort�within�the�Reform

movement�to�make�a�difference�at�the�state�level.��Rabbis�and�lay�leaders

were�instrumental�in�passing�the�Trust�Act,�which�decriminalizes�

undocumented�immigrants�in�California,�creating�trust�between�immigrant

communities�and�local�law�enforcement,�while�preventing�many�deporta-

tions.�We�also�had�a�“win”�with�affordable�housing,�securing�$3�billion�

for�the�construction�of�affordable�homes�over�the�next�five�years.��You�

sufficiency.��Now�we�are�delighted�to�be�working�with�Marva�and�and�

her�family,�helping�them�overcome�obstacles�on�their�path�to�a�stable,�

homewalk -��Saturday�morning,�November�15,�2014����

HomeWalk�is�a�5K�walk�organized�by�the�United�Way�to�end�homeless-

ness�in�LA�County.�All�money�raised�through�HomeWalk�is�distributed

back�into�the�community�to�help�quickly�rehouse�homeless�families�

and�provide�permanent�housing�to�the�chronically�homeless.�HomeWalk

will�take�place�on�November�15�-�and�once�again�LBT�will�be�there!��To

healing blanket projectThe�Healing�Blanket�Project�was�started�by�members�of�LBT�and�is�

under�the�wing�of�LBT�Women,�however�it�is�open�to�all�men,�women,�

socialize�as�a�group�on�Sundays,�at�Yom�Limmud,�and�various�LBT�

to�gather�other�men�of�LBT�to:•� Foster�a�sense�of�brotherhood,�camaraderie�and�community�among�

Last�year�we�held�an�amazing�Men's�retreat�at�Camp�Josepho�with�ax

throwing,�beer�catching,�helicopter�flying,�and�team�building.�We�also�lost

our�shirts�playing�poker�and�lost�our�accents�making�Italian�pizza.�

The�purpose�of�Achim,�which�means�“brothers”�in�Hebrew,�is�to�create�a

collegial�community�of�men.��We�wish�to�foster�a�climate�of�caring�and�

understanding,�thereby�deepening�our�relationship�to�each�other,�to�the

Temple,�and�to�the�community.�The�group�meets�at�the�homes�of�our�

members�on�a�rotating�basis�and�over�breakfast�and�coffee,�we�explore�

various�subjects�of�interest�to�men.��Areas�we�have�explored�this�year�

include�Torah�study,�responsa�literature,�Israeli�and�domestic�politics,�

discussion�of�the�qualities�of�leadership�as�defined�in�Jewish�texts,�and�
