Show Me The SavingsThe Department of Energy reports water heating can account for 14 to 25 percent of the energy consumed in a residential home. “Green” advocates are touting solar power as a viable option to reduce those costs and applaud Congress’ decision to extend the federal solar tax credit for another eight years.

Through the tax credit program, it’s reported homeowners can recoup 30 percent of the total installed cost of a solar thermal water heating system. on average, if you install a solar water heater, your water bills should drop 50-80 percent. Will the general public make the switch? With average installation projected to cost $6,500 to $11,000 - and some complex systems running as much as $12,000 - it’s unclear what percentage of the population Congress hopes will sign up for the tax credit.
