The Romualdo Del Bianco Foundation, aimed since 1991 at promoting intercultural dialogue, has given birth to the Life Beyond Tourism initiative. Life Beyond Tourism was conceived as strategy for the sustainable development of world different territories. LBT Model is the tool that creates the possibility of this development both at social and economical level. LBT recognizes and enhances the territories different cultural identities and therefore creates conscious and responsible opportunities for touristic economies, supporting, representing and enhancing their cultural expressions, traditions and heritage (both tangible and intangible).

During the intensive course students are introduced to the basic knowledge of tourism understanding pros and cons for local communities to deepen the aspect of cultural tourism through the best practice Life Beyond Tourism.

The course is an introduction to Life Beyond Tourism that can be studied more in detail in further steps. The course is given in English.

In a world that goes towards 10 billion inhabitants understanding different cultures is becoming a crucial need. Nowadays societies are getting more complex because of migrations and travels. Cultures that are created by the movement of the masses are new and mixed. Territories are changing but each one has its own identity and resources.

The aim of this course is to introduce to the Life Beyond Tourism cultural and economical model to observe territories and to represent them through a cultural mapping using the Heritage Community www.lifebeyondtourism.org as a tool to collect and catalogue the information of each territory.

Students are involved in three types of activities:

1. Lectures

2. Reading assignment on an international bibliography (UNESCO, UNWTO, ICOMOS, Life Beyond Tourism)

3. Discussions and presentations of the exercises.

For the exercise students are asked to make:

1. A pop up representing Japanese culture through rice

2. A video (made with smartphone or other tools they have) representing their point of view on rice

3. Presentation in ppt. on the research they made on rice and the making of the pop up.

Students will be evaluated on:

Part of the program documentation was the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, which was handed out to the students for reading and discussion. The students formed two groups and made a presentation regarding the subject “Responsible Tourism”.

There were improvised exercises to test the students knowledge and attention on world monuments and different cultures. They were handed out between lectures and exercises; the last one of them helped the students to prepare for the final pop up exercise.

Students were asked to identify the type of food or name of the meal and also the name of the place.

Various pictures of monuments without name or description. Students were asked to write down where the monument was located.

Students were asked to identify the name of the food.

Students were asked to represent by sketch their own culture. This was an interesting exercise due to the fact that in class there where Japanese, Vietnamese and Philippine students.

This was a preparatory exercise for the final pop up presentation. Students where asked to sketch and project their final presentation with Rice as the main theme.
