Contractors' responsibility shall include, but not be limited to, the following: MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS: 1. All plants, shrubs, trees, and groundcover 2. Hardwood mulch - black 3. Stakes and other material to secure all vertical plants and trees 4. Install new sod. (Green Side Up.) LABOR SCOPES: No stockpiling of material shall be allowed on job, except for daily installation of mulch, dirt of plants or in designated areas. Any plantings not installed the same day of delivery shall have root balls covered with mulch and watered. Any material not planted within three (3) days of delivery shall be removed from job. No landscape refuse or debris will be allowed to accumulate. The Contractor shall deliver only those plant materials that may be planted in one day unless adequate storage and watering facilities are available at the jobsite and there is no danger of freezing or drought. Contractor shall properly install all plantings per the landscape layout. All spoils generated from excavation of holes shall be removed from the job site. All trees shall be balled, burlapped or in containers properly sized for species of plant. No bare root trees are to be planted. Contractor to provide initial pruning of plants as required upon installation. Contractor shall clean all dirt or mud from the parking lot, sidewalks, driveway, and curb upon completion of his work. Dirt, mud, trash by others is not to be removed. All plant materials used shall be true to name and size in conforming to the American Joint Committee on Horticulture Nomenclature and the American Standard for Nursery Stock. All plant materials shall be true to species or variety, shall be sound, healthy, vigorous, acclimated representatives of their species, free from defects, disfiguring knots, sunscald injuries, disease, insect eggs, bores and all other forms of infections. They shall have healthy, well- developed root systems, and a well-developed branch system. Proper drainage is required around all plants to insure water run-off. All trees must have straight trunks with single leader intact, except those trees specifically grown and noted that they are trained to other methods, re: open center, trellis or umbrella. Trees shall have no abrasions of the bark and no fresh cuts of the limbs over 1-1/4" which have not completely calloused over. All materials shall be freshly dug. All trees shall come balled with no exposed root system. Prior to commencement of any work, the Contractor shall inspect the job site; locate the planting areas and underground utilities so that proper precautions and procedures may be followed during and throughout construction. SPECIFICATIONS The Contractor shall immediately notify the Owner of all discrepancies between the plans and/or specifications and actual conditions. No work shall be performed in affected areas until the discrepancies have been resolved and approved by the Landscape Designer. Planting may be adjusted to fit actual as build conditions on the job site, and any changes to locations as a result of these conditions shall be made without additional cost to the Owner. Should adjustment of plants result in reduction in number of plants installed by this Contractor then Contractor will issue a credit to Owner. Contractor shall comply with all state laws, municipal ordinances and requirements of all authorities. These laws and regulations shall be deemed to be included in these specifications as though herein written in full. The Contractor will replace dead materials and materials not in vigorous, thriving condition as soon as weather permits and on notification by Owner. Replace plants, including trees, which have partially died, thereby damaging shape, size or symmetry. Replace shrubs and trees with same kind and size as originally planted, at no additional cost to the Owner. Provide 1-year guarantee on all shrubs and trees. The Contractor, in submitting a bona fide bid, has agreed that the plant material specified is generally available in the quantities and condition ranges shown and described in the plans. The Owner shall provide suitable water for the execution and maintenance of the landscape work. The Contractor shall, however, be required to furnish hose and hose connection from water source outlets. The Contractor shall verify water availability prior to planting operation. Water will be available on site. The Contractor shall inspect conditions such as, but not limited to, soil work ability and moisture content, soil quality and grade elevations of planting areas. The Contractor shall notify of unsatisfactory conditions so that problems may be resolved and mutually acceptable to the Owner, Landscape Designer and Contractor. During the course of work, the Contractor shall keep the premises clean and orderly at all times. The Contractor shall remove all trash, debris and rock from planting bed preparation daily from the site. Fine grade all planting areas and remove exposed extraneous materials from the site. Areas to be planted in flowers or ground covers shall be graded one (1'') inch below adjacent paving. The Contractor shall prune all plants immediately after planting operations to remove injured and dead branches. Pruning shall be done in such a manner as to retain the natural form of the plant material, or as directed by the Landscape Designer. All trees must measure according to sizing requirements detailed on drawings. All materials must be naturally bushy, dense, in good foliage, well branched and of good appearance. Material lacking compactness or proper proportions, weak, thin or injured by closely planted nursery rows will not be accepted. The Owner reserves the right to reject all materials, which do not meet the standards and requirements, set forth in the Contract Documents, plans and specifications. The Contractor, as required, shall remove all rejected materials. During work, keep premises neat and orderly, including organization of storage areas. Trash, including debris resulting from removing weeds or rocks from planting areas, preparing beds or planting plants, shall be removed from the site daily as work progresses. Keep walk and driveway areas clean by sweeping or hosing. All Contractors' work will be installed in such a manner as not to restrict, interfere or alter the intent of site drainage. Maintain positive drainage away from all buildings, or other structures. Grade all planting areas to provide positive drainage without ponding or standing water. The Contractor will supply and place all ground surface stone at all locations as specified by approved building plans. Type of stone must be approved prior to placement. Stone must be washed and free of all dirt, mud or other debris. Plant and Tree Installation: Planting pots shall be large enough to allow for natural root growth in accordance with American Nurseryman's Association Standards. Topsoil in shrub and groundcover beds and containers shall be adequately overfilled and allowed to have a sufficient time interval between soil placement and planting so that full settlement can be accomplished naturally. No mechanical compaction shall be permitted. Topsoil mixture backfill shall be firmed at 6" to 8" intervals and thoroughly settled by foot tamping around entire perimeter of plant ball. All plants shall stand after settlement at the same level, at which they have grown. Care shall be taken that plants are set plumb. Scarify the root ball of all container-grown stock all around prior to planting. Prior to backfilling, all strings at base of trunk shall be cut to protect against strangulation. Prior to installation of mulch, Contractor shall rake the surface of planting beds. Contractor shall install mulch no less than 3" in depth and will be black in color. Mulch must be double ground so as not to have large pieces. Mulch material shall be laid at a uniform, even level to promote water and nutrient accessibility as well as discourage and prevent weed seed germination. Contractor shall stake each new tree using one 6'x2" x 2" stake, hemp, and hose harness so as to support the tree and prevent undue trauma to root system. Contractor shall warrant all plantings for a period of one (1) year from installation date. Guarantee excludes replacement of plants because of injury by storm, natural drought, drowning, hail, freeze or acts of nature. The Contractor shall plant materials in compliance with applicable State and Federal laws relating to inspection for disease and insect infestation at the growing site. Contractor shall install new sod (green side up).
