Dal 1993 Lolli e Memmoli non sono soltanto i cognomi accostati di Ivan e Mario: diventano un’unica parola, che identifi ca un progetto di luce, forma, geometria, tecnica, design. Il lampadario è occasione per raccontare equilibrismi tra le certezze della tradizione e l’imprevisto dell’istinto creativo, attraverso la moltitudine di migliaia di cristalli, ognuno con la propria identità, riconoscibili nei colori, nei diametri e nel taglio, ma tutti ordinati uno all’altro, tenuti quasi per mano da uno spillo. Poi la luce li attraversa in una iperbole continua, accendendo pixel sfumati, nel rifl esso e nella rifrazione, mentre il resto scompare: lasciando traccia inconfondibile nei migliori showroom, ovunque nel mondo, prima di disegnare nuove geometrie spaziali, ovunque nei luoghi dell’abitare.
Since 1993 Lolli e Memmoli are no longer merely the last names of Ivan and Mario put together. They are a single word to identify products of light, form, geometry, technique and design. Their chandeliers are a variegated and balanced mix of the certainties of tradition and the excitement of creative instinct. A multitude of thousands of crystals, each with its own identity given by color, diameter and cut, is neatly strung together as delicately as if hand-held by a pin. Then light shines through them ina hyperbolic continuum, igniting shaded pixels by refl ection and refraction, while all else disappears, endowing the most inviting showrooms all over the world with a trace of distinction, and offering new spatial fl ights of fancy to homes everywhere.

Ivan Lolli studia architettura a Firenze e si laurea al Politecnico di Milano.Mario Memmoli si laurea a Firenze e si specializza in architettura del paesaggio a Milano. Nel 1989 nasce lo studio Lolli e Memmoli Architetti, e progettano “dal cucchiaio alla città”: quando serve, anche le lampade per i loro interni. Soprattutto perché, agli inizi degli anni 90, gli interni sono scatole di cartongesso e la luce proviene da faretti incassati: e se volevi appendere qualcosa, dovevi reinventarti tutto.
Ivan Lolli studied architecture in Florence, then received his degree from the Milan Polytechnic. Mario Memmoli graduated from the University of Florence, then specialized in landscape architecture in Milan. In 1989, they founded Lolli e Memmoli Architetti, designing projects ranging “from the spoon to the city” including, whenever needed, lamps for their interiors. Especially because in the early 1990s, interiors were plasterboard boxes with built-in spotlights. If you wanted to hang up a lamp, you had to reinvent everything.

Lo scheletro di metallo è invisibile, una linea, a tratteggiare nel vuoto una geometria primordiale: alla quale le catene di cristallo si appendono con delicatezza, raggiungendo altezze diseguali e disegnando un profi lo irregolare, così diverso dal taglio orizzontale che le sostiene. Una sbavatura di pendenti a taglio bohemia, che gronda luce.
An invisible metal skeleton traces the line of a primordial geometric frame in space. From there, chains of crystals hang down delicately, reaching different heights - a feathery profi le much different from the horizontal precision with which they begin their descent. Streaming light and dripping pendants with a Bohemian cut.

La luce attraversa lo smaterializzarsi della massa, che per caduta si pronuncia verso il basso, goccia dopo goccia, disegnando una stalattite sospesa. Ogni giro di cristalli si sovrappone all’altro, stratifi cando una coltre sempre più trasparente, fi no all’ultimo pendaglio: quasi trattenuto nell’istante dell’ultimo sforzo, per arrivare a sfi orare il pavimento.
Light passes through a dematerializing mass cascading toward the ground drop by drop like a hanging limestone stalactite. Each band of crystals is layered below its predecessor, stratifying an increasingly transparent sheath down to the last pendant, seemingly frozen in the ultimate moment of skilful exploit, just in time to skim the fl oor.

I cristalli sono composti tra loro come in un tessuto, adagiato poi su un telaio bidimensionale che ne sostiene il peso: come porte metafi siche, attraverso le quali la luce sembra soffi are fuori dalla trama di gemme, prendendo forme diverse, circolari, ellittiche, rettangolari, e lasciando che per gravità si gonfi in un respiro morbido e dilatato nel tempo.
Crystals woven together like fabric, hung from a two-dimensional frame that carries its weight. Like a metaphysical portal, at will circular, elliptical or rectangular in shape, through which light seeps from the weave of the gems, gently nudged by the soft slow swell of gravity.

Forme geometriche elementari sembrano opporsi alla forza di gravità: sospese nell’aria, polilinee circolari e rettangolari trattengono una moltitudine di tessere di cristallo in una trama gonfi a di luce. Il vibrare dei rifl essi amplifi ca l’equilibrio tra pieno e vuoto: nell’ambiguità che lo spazio contenga, o piuttosto sia contenuto dal lampadario.
Elementary geometric shapes seem to defy the force of gravity. Suspended in mid-air, circular rings, concentric squares or rectangles trap a multitude of crystal drops in a net that is swollen with light. Vibrating refl ections amplify the equilibrium between solid and void contained in the ambiguity of the space, or rather in the chandelier.

La luce, e i cristalli che attraversa, sono macchie sospese nello spazio. La struttura in metallo scompare dietro le catene di gemme volutamente irregolari: con pendagli di forme e dimensioni diverse, quasi casuali. Così, il tema dello chandelier viene decostruito, per poi rigenerarsi secondo nuove regole asimmetriche e anarchiche.
Light and the crystals it illuminates have become entities hanging in space. The metal structure disappears behind chains of irregular gems with different shapes and sizes, almost random in their juxtaposition. Here, the strict order of the chandelier is deconstructed and regenerated according to new asymmetrical and anarchic rules.

Una moltitudine di tessere vengono ricomposte secondo geometrie e proporzioni che sfi dano la percezione visiva della forma: appare una sfera, svelata però nella sovrapposizione di cilindri a scalare, dove la rifrazione del cristallo viene reiterata a ogni strato. Intanto, la luce pulsa al centro, e vibra, attraversando ognuno dei tremila cristalli.
A mosaic of pendants is shaped into geometric proportions that defy the visual perception of their forms. A sphere might appear, unveiled by a layering of staggered cylinders, where the refraction of the crystals is renewed with each tier. In the meanwhile, light pulsates in the center and vibrates its way through each of the three thousand gems.

Quasi la combinazione di tre lampade: scatole o cilindri che si integrano gli uni negli altri, creando l’effetto di tre volumi che si attraversano in modo concentrico, secondo una forma allungata. Luce e struttura sono celati dietro l’illusione della sospensione e della levitazione, mentre il fi lo a cui la lampada si appende, è l’unico indizio di un sopra e di un sotto.
Almost a combination of three lamps, where boxes or cylinders are slid through one another, creating the effect of three concentric sleeves elongated in shape. Light bulbs and structure are concealed by the illusion of suspension and levitation, while the wire from which the lamp hangs is the only hint given as to which is top and which is bottom.

Autentica pioggia di cristalli per una superfi cie enorme e esplosiva, raccolta attorno a una struttura in metallo che quasi non c’è: esile e apparentemente incapace di sostenere la moltitudine di catene che si ripetono in modo ossessivo. Lo spazio è fagocitato nella tridimensionalità della forma, mentre la luce rivela la quarta dimensione.
Crystal raindrops fall from an enormous explosive surface held by a barely perceptible metal structure, so thin it would appear to be unable to carry such a multitude of obsessively repeated strings of pendants. Space is swallowed up by the three-dimensionality of the chandelier as light reveals a fourth dimension.

I cristalli diventano parte di una superfi cie continua e elastica: come una pelle, a rivestire un tamburo geometrizzato nell’essenza di uno scheletro di metallo. Il profi lo arcuato svela il segreto, e il rivestimento di gemme, così leggero da non potere opporsi neanche all’aria, manifesta una tensione naturale e simmetrica, come sospesa in un respiro.
Crystals arranged in a continuous elastic surface, like a skin, cover a drum that has been geometrized to the bare essence of a metal skeleton. The arched profi le reveals the secret, and the bejeweled mesh, so light as to not offer any resistance to the air itself, presents its tautness and symmetry as a touch of nature, as if waiting with bated breath.
