Lichen planus in african american patient

Lichen planus is a pruritic, papular eruption characterized by its violaceous color; polygonal shape; and, sometimes, fine scale.

Lichen planus is most commonly found on the flexor surfaces of the upper extremities, on the genitalia, and on the mucous membranes.

Lichen planus in african american patient The prevalence of lichen planus is unknown, but it is

estimated to occur in less than 1 percent of the population. Estimates of the prevalence vary among different populations, but the condition does not appear to exhibit a racial predilection.

Although it has recently been reported racial predominance of lichen planus in African American children1.

Lichen planus in african american patient The classic appearance of skin lesions

includes violaceous polygonal flat-topped papules and plaques.

However, in patients with black skin, as is the case we report, we will not see the color violaceous, with lesions in these patients pigmented.

If it is very distinctive, and in our patient, the lesions shine by reflecting light.
