History of the Roman Castles

The Castelli Romani are located in the Alban Hills to the south-cost of Rome.

The history of the “Castelli Romani” dates back to 476, at the end of the Roman Empire .At the end of the XVIII th century the Alban Hills were the scene of the Neapolitan Wars of Succession fought between Austria and Spain in 1744 in Velletri. In 1870 the “Castelli Romani” were joined to the Kingdom of Italy.

A period of growth began with the extension of the railway line to Velletri, inaugurated by Pius IX in 1863. During the Second World War, the town was bombed, but after the War, the local economy started to improve.

History of VelletriVelletri is an Italian town with 60 000 inhabitants. It is a provincial district just outside Rome, in the Alban Hills.

It was an ancient town founded in the IX century b.C. by the Volsci (ancient population). It was influential in the time of King Ancus Marcius and was almost on a par with Rome. In the Middle Ages it was one of the few “free towns” in Lazio and central Italy.

Nowadays, in Velletri there is an important court and state prison in addition to several colleges and high schools and carabinieri marshall school. It is the terminus of the Rome-Velletri railway line.

and above all with the acronyms “S.P.Q.V” (Senatus Popolusque Veliternus, which is the provincial version of S.P.Q.R. “Senatus Popolusque Romanus”) all enclosed by an Austrian double-headed eagle with spread wings, and two imperial crowns

Roman Castle: the origins

The Alban Hills include villages and small towns. The history of the Alban Hills begins after the fall of the Roman Empire when fortified private properties were built by various Roman baronial families. Later these buildings were transformed into real castles during the Middle Ages, hence the “Castelli Romani” name. One of the many towns which is part of the “Castelli Romani” is Velletri.
