To all in the Uplands Community,
This week I am writing my newsletter
introduction sitting at Subang Airport
having been delayed twice by the
weather in Penang and Kuala Lumpur.
Last night I attended an event hosted
by the British High Commissioner, Mrs.
Vicky Treadwell, to celebrate Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth's II Birthday. At
the event I was delighted to be informed that Vicky Oh, in
Year 12, had won the overall prize for the Queen's Birthday
Art competition. Eight members of Uplands entered the
competition and received commendations, with Vicky Oh
being the overall winner from all the Malaysian International
School entries.
I arrived at the function to be greeted by Vicky's artwork
being displayed against the Petronas Twin Towers.
Copies of all the winning entries will be sent to Buckingham
Palace and the winners invited to a special reception at the
High Commissioner's residence in Kuala Lumpur.
The Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Paul Rennie, will be
our guest of honour at this year's Presentation Day on Friday
19th June and will be presenting Vicky with her certificate at
the event.
I look forward to seeing many of you at next week's end of
year celebrations and events, and in particular at the UPTA
Summer Fair tomorrow.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Yours sincerely,
Matthew Bristow Principal

It certainly is hard to believe that 41 weeks ago we began the new academic year at Uplands. The
penultimate week has come to an end and just like all other weeks, it has been business as usual, with a lot
of activities taking place.
The Year 10 students were fine-tuning their skills, as they were fully involved with their Work Experience
Programme. Students had the opportunity to have a taster in a field of work of their choice, with plenty of
them being risk takers and being brave to try new things. Feedback from many of the “employers” was
very positive and once again our students have done Uplands proud. From what I have heard, a lot of the
students were early to bed each night, being so tired from a hard days work. I had the opportunity to visit
some of our students at four different locations and my favourite comment from a student, who was
working at St Christopher’s Primary School as a Nursery teacher was:
CS – “It’s great to see that you have really enjoyed yourself. Do you think you will be considering teaching as a
profession?”
Student – “No, it’s way too hard. It’s so full on! I am so tired by the end of the day.”
All I could do was have a chuckle to myself. A big thanks to Mr Bill Mitchell, who oversaw the Work
Experience Programme and also to all of the companies which supported our students throughout the
week.
The Year 9 students were also involved in an experiential learning programme as they put their business
hats on and competed in the Champions of Enterprise competition. Monday, they spent the day in school
learning how to become entrepreneurs, whilst Tuesday and Wednesday they crafted their products and
tried to get experts to invest in their products. Once again it was a fantastic spectacle with all students
pushing the boundaries and surprising the staff with their business skills. Thank you to Ms Emma McAskie
for organising this wonderful opportunity for the students, as well as the Uplands staff and the volunteer
advisors who assisted her.
Yesterday evening I attended the Primary & Secondary CCA Music Concert and it was great to see such a
diverse array of music on display. From the Year 4 strings beginners to the Senior Choir, the talent on show
was remarkable. It was capped off by a wonderful performance by Ms Ogusu, Ms Jacob and Mr Brewer.
Congratulations to all involved.
Next week is the last week of school, with all secondary classes taking place up to Friday. Please note the
following events and schedules which will take place during the final week of this academic year. All

Primary FOBISIA Games
Last weekend saw Uplands play host to some 550 students, coaches and travelling supporters from across
the region. Our students preformed fantastically well, and more than held their own against much larger
Primary Schools. I am sure by now that many of you have heard of the many individual successes, but
from a coaches view point, the highlight was seeing how our team bonded and supported each other
throughout the Games.
For full results please go to:

On behalf of all the students and coaches, I would like to thank the many students and parent volunteers
who helped make the Games the success they were. You were a great advert for our school!
Reception, Year 1 & 2 Sports Carnival
This coming Tuesday sees our Sports Carnival for our youngest students taking place. This is very much a
participation event with no specific competitive element. Students will complete a circuit of physical
activities all of which have been part of their programme during classes over the past 3 terms. We aim to
start shortly after morning briefing at approximately 8:20am, and should be finished no later than 8:40.
Parents are very welcome to come along and offer support.

Year 7, 8 and 9 Swim Gala is scheduled for Wednesday, 17th June from 8.30 to 12.30pm. Students have
been practicing their strokes in their PE lessons over the past term and I am sure we will see some school
records being broken. Students are expected to compete in a minimum of 2 events. As always, you are
more than welcome to come and support your child and the event.
If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at: [email protected]

Congratulations to the Primary FOBISIA Team who performed magnificently during the B2 Primary
FOBISIA Games last week. The standard of competition was very high where Uplands was the smallest
school participating in our group. In the team events our Year 4 T-ball team was placed 3rd and in the
Football our Year 4 and Year 6 girls were placed 3rd. Our Year 5 girl’s team won gold, winning all their
games and conceding only 1 goal in the entire tournament! Our swimmers and athletes also performed
superbly, winning medals in the pool and on the track. Well done Uplands! A special thanks goes to the
PE staff, volunteer mums, Secondary students and parent supporters for their contribution to the success
of the Games.
Last evening our Primary musicians and singers performed in the CCA concert. I was particularly
impressed with the standard of the performances and the progress our students have made throughout the
year. Thank you to the Music Department for your dedication in nurturing the musical talents of our
students.
This afternoon our Year 6 students will celebrate their graduation from Primary in style in a special
ceremony at the Rasa Sayang Hotel.

Music Performance Next Week
Congratulations to all performers of the CCA Music Concert and Year 7, 8, 9 Music Concert that was
conducted this week. It was wonderful to see the huge strides in musical skills and the building of
confidence in the students evidenced on stage. I hope all the performers continue to hone their talents
outside of school and enrich their daily lives with the gift of music. Next week, more musical performances
will be showcased at the Secondary Award Assembly and during Presentation Day, in addition to the Year
12 and Year 10 recital. Details of these are given below. I would like to thank all parents for the great
support and encouragement given to the music department during this academic year and wish you all a
wonderful summer as we get ready for a new journey in the next academic year.
