Reading Comes Alive

A Success In December we had the largest crowd ever. The following schools attended: Bethune, Carlton Palmore, Cleveland Court, Combee, Crystal Lake, Davenport SOA, Dundee, Gibbons, Griffin, Highland City, Highlands Grove, Kathleen, Lake Alfred, Lena Vista, Lewis Anna Woodbury, Oscar Pope, Padgett, Philip O’Brien, Purcell, R. Bruce Wagner, Rochelle, and Sleep Hill. The books performed by the Harrison students under the tutelage of Mrs. Ilene Finns were Stop that Pickle, Christian the Huggable Lion, One, Ugly Pie and What’s in the Egg: Little Pip. A special Thank You goes to the Greater Foundation of Lakeland for helping with buses in the Lakeland area.

Library Media Center Named

The library media center was named in honor of Cathy Worthen at Winston Elementary School on Sunday, February 19, 2012. The superintendent and the mayor of Lakeland were among those who attended. This continues the legacy of schools naming library media centers after their library media specialists. Some centers that have named for former library media specialists can be found at Southwest Elementary, Winter Haven HS and Boone MS. There may be more. Cathy Worthen worked at four schools during her employment for Polk County Schools. She served as a teacher at Dixieland and Crystal Lake. She served as a library media specialist at Padgett and Winston until her death. A special thank you goes to Winston Elementary, Mrs. Strong and the SAC committee for recognizing Cathy and the contributions that this library media specialist made in the lives of Winston’s students.

Does your library have these books in your collection? The following lists are examples for you to check your collections in preparation for our shift to support Common Core. You probably have many or similar titles already in your collections. The three Common Core ELA & Literacy evidence-based pedagogical shifts are: Shift 1: Balance informational and literary reading in

all grades by emphasizing informational texts and the

Common Core Appendix B Text Exemplars.

Shift 2: Emphasize reading in many K–12 disciplines;

including history, social studies, and science, with

thoughtfully selected supplemental booklists.

Shift 3: Require knowledge and direct

consideration of the text to support students'

evidentiary argument skills at all grade levels.

The list below is only a sample list. Different

companies are preparing documents to help with

this topic. If you check Teaching Books.Net and

Renaissance BookFind, you will find additional titles

and information.

Please tentatively mark your calendars for March

21st

for a meeting with Just Read Florida. The

location has not yet been determined.
