Finding articles

• What have you got to start with?

• An article with a bibliography?

• A list of citations/references?

• A rough topic?

• Some key words?

Citation Indexes

• Find articles, articles’ bibliographies, and articles that cite your chosen article(s)

• E.g., Web of Science – includes Science Citation Index, 1965-present

• Databases by Title > W > Web of Science

• Search by key words or by article Title, Author, Publication (journal) Name, Year Published, etc.

Cited References

• (Cited) References = Bibliography

• Find articles cited by your article

• Look ‘backwards in time’

Citing References

• Times Cited = Citing References

• Find articles that cite your article

• Look ‘forward in time’

Getting articles

1. Identify interesting articles

2. Click purple Get it @ Western buttons

3. Can you link to Full Text?

4. Holdings Information (check Library Catalogue)?

5. Interlibrary Loans (request via RACER)

• Inventory of all print & online journals owned by UWO Library

• Do we have the volume & issue you need?

• Do we have it online or in print?

• Which library is it in?

• What is the location (section) & call number?

Interlibrary Loan (RACER)

• Order a photocopy from another library

• How much time do you have?

• Need to create an account

• $5 per article

Getting theses

• For UWO theses, search the Library Catalogue by author name

• For non-UWO theses, try:1. Searching ProQuest Dissertations and Theses (Full

Text available online) – under Databases by Title

2. Searching the library at the university at which the thesis was written

3. Contacting the author

4. Borrowing through Interlibrary Loan

5. Ordering through UMI Dissertation Express ($41)

Finding more

• Identify interesting articles (using Web of Science and/or your article’s bibliography)

• Skim their abstracts, identifying key words & vocabulary used by authors of articles

• Search by these key words (in Topic), using “quotes for phrases” and truncat* (truncation, truncating), AND, OR, NOT

• Use more than one database (because coverage varies)

Another article database

• GeoRef - American Geological Society (1785-present)

• Databases by Title > G > GeoRef• Can also search GeoRef In Process at the

same time• Search results tabs - sorted by type• Doesn’t have Cited Reference Searching• Does have Descriptors - use them to

increase the relevance of your results

Database focus & journal coverage

• GeoRef has a focus on geology, and covers the geological literature more in-depth than does either Web of Science or Scopus

• You may find articles from journals that are not geology-specific (e.g., Chemistry Letters)

• Not all journals will be indexed cover-to-cover (e.g., chemistry journals)

Another citation index

• Scopus (1960/1966-present)• Has Physical Sciences component which

contains Earth and Planetary Sciences• Databases by Title > S > SCOPUS• Off-Campus Access is temporarily unavailable• View references (aka Cited References)• Cited by (aka Citing References)• Refine Results – Subject Area, Document

Type, Year, Author Name, Source Title, etc.

RefWorks• Useful web application for building & formatting your bibliography• Create an account – use your @uwo.ca email address• Group code = RWUWestOnt• Add references:

– Export directly from GeoRef or Scopus (easy)– Import from Web of Science (tricky)

• Save as Plain Text (in Web of Science, then in RefWorks…)• Import Filter = ISI• Database = Web of Science• Encoding = ANSI – Latin I

• Export/Import help for more databases is here• Check the quality of what you’ve imported• Create your Bibliography

– Access Style > Output Style Manager > Earth and Planetary Science Letters > Add to Favorites

• Create endnotes/footnotes using Write-N-Cite MS Word plug-in

Off-Campus Access

• You can access Web of Science, GeoRef, eJournals, etc. from off-campus

• You _should normally_ be able to access Scopus from off-campus as well

• Click Off-Campus Access and login before you try to use databases or eJournals
