The Master of Science in Library and Information Sciences in the College of Information has consistently been named within the top 20 graduate programs in the nation by US News and World Report.

Courses are offered online, on site, and in blended formats with class locations across the nation. Web institutes meet in Denton, Houston, California, Georgia, Nevada, Utah, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and are soon to be offered in the U.S. Pacific Islands.

The Master of Science degree has been consistently accredited by American Library Association since 1965.

There is a whole world within the field of librarianship. When I embarked on this program with UNT, the doors began to open.

DIGITAL IMAGE MANAGEMENTProgram includes the production of digital images, digital information data-base creation and management of digital information.

DISTRIBUTED LEARNING LIBRARIANSHIPProvides a foundation of expertise in information and telecommunications technology, distributed learning, copyright/intellectual property issues, and issues facing library services in distributed learning environments.

HEALTH INFORMATICS SPECIALISTFocuses on the fundamental concepts and activities in health information processing, including health storage and retrieval systems, clinical decision support, clinical research and issues in health care financing, consumer health advocacy, and legal, ethical, and philosophical concerns in health informatics.

INFORMATION ORGANIZATIONLearn to organize and control information for a wide variety of information formats, resources, systems, and environments. Fundamentals include cataloging, classifying, indexing, or abstracting in libraries or bibliographic utilities, organizing networked resources, web sites or digital libraries, knowledge management, and information architecture.

INFORMATION SYSTEMSDirected towards the synthesis of intellectual skills such as classification and metadata description with web administration and web site design.

LAW LIBRARIAN & LEGAL INFORMATICSPrepares graduates for careers in information organizations using legal information resources, management of information, and training in law schools, courts, private law firms, corporations, government departments and agencies, or in correctional institutions.

SCHOOL LIBRARIANSHIPFocuses on the foundations of library and information science with a specialization in services and programming for children and young adults in a K-12 school setting. Prepares students for the TExES exam in School Librarianship.

YOUTH LIBRARIANSHIP Develop the competencies in the following areas specific to youth: history of youth information services/systems, knowledge of the client group, administrative and managerial skills, communications skills, materials and collection development, reference services, programming skills, technology applications, advocacy, public relations and networking, and professional development.

CAPSTONE EXPERIENCECandidates in all master’s programs of study will participate in the Cap-stone Experience (in lieu of a thesis) during their last semester.

PRACTICUMMaster’s students must present evidence of relevant field experience of at least six months in a paid position performing professional level duties or volunteer for a minimum of 120 hours in a library environment within a semester’s time frame.

MS CORE COURSES

Nine hours of core courses are required to be completed by all students. These classes are offered in a residential format in Denton, off campus in Houston and UNT Dallas, and through various web institutes.

The Master of Science program in LIS is offered through a distance education model that includes web institutes that meet across the nation. This model is committed to:

• Enabling a vibrant learning community• Combining two four-day institutes with a highly interactive online

experience• Providing an opportunity for on-site advising and program planning• Establishing links with the local library and information community• Encouraging local student organizations and associations• Providing a variety of opportunities for students to meet formally

and informally.

Distance Education

The web institute portion of the master’s program includes an orientation, technology training, instruction in the core courses, as well as time to socialize with colleagues and faculty.

Groups form social bonds during the intensive Institute study that will continue to expand through the online portion of the program. Using a variety of communication tools, faculty and students will expand the learning community established during the on-site institutes to enable a high level of communication and support during the online portion of the program.

DENTONClasses are held at the University of North Texas Denton campus as well as the UNT Discovery Park location - conviently located five miles north of Denton campus. Students may attend face - to - face courses in Denton or visit for web institute dates.

GEORGIAOn site instruction includes two four-day institutes held at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library. The Georgia Cohort of students began in 2010 and will study together through their first year of study and attend classess limited to cohort students.

GREATER LOS ANGELESA collaboration between UNT LIS and the California State University, Northridge Library brings the Master of Science program to the Greater Los Angeles area. Applications will be accepted until the Fall 2011 cohort reaches 40 students from the LA area only.

The program will be planned and taught by University of North Texas full-time and part-time faculty. California State University full-time library facul-ty, and selected distinguished regional library leaders teaching and serving as guest lecturers and mentors for field projects.

HOUSTONThe Houston program started in the early 1990s and has continued a great history of sucess. Many graduates still live and work in the Houston area- providing a great source of support and mentorship for students.

NEVADAThis program is available to persons in Nevada and Utah, as well as surrounding states. Applications are being accepted for the Fall 2011 Nevada cohort. For more information contact Dr. Yvonne J. Chandler, [email protected] or Charlotte Thomas, [email protected]. S.W.I.M.S.W.I.M. services the states of South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Students in this cohort began classes together in the fall of 2010 in Missoula, Montana and will continue in the spring of 2011 in Billings, Montana. For more information contact Dr. Yvonne J. VIRGINIAOn site instruction for Virginia is held at the James Madison University Library. Various on site events available throughout the the Virginia cohort include advising sessions and social activities at the Virginia Library Association conference. NEW!!! L.E.A.P. Library Education for the U.S. Affiliated Pacific

LEAP will provide full scholarships for 23 residents of the Pacific islands to enroll in the MS program. The goal of the program is to increase the number and diversity of degreed library professionals for the islands. Applications for the scholarship will be accepted through April 1, 2011. Check the LIS Web site for more details.

99 Apply online via ApplyTexas.org and pay the $60 fee.

99 Undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) must be at least a 3.0 from an accredited program.

99 Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores sent directly to UNT from the service administering the test.

99 U.S. citizens or permanent residents submit application, fee, and all official transcripts to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.
