• Mobile Platform – typically refers to PDA platforms such as Palm and Pocket PC or to Java-based software environments designed for handhelds. May also refer to cell phones or PC or Mac laptops.

• Mobile Operating System – System software on which all application software (programs) are run. Some competitors include Symbian OS, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Mobile Linux, MXI. Features, functions, and connectivity for each mobile device are tied to the particular mobile OS

• WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) - A radio frequency standard that is used to connect devices, such as computers, together using a wireless connection. Instead of computers being connected with network cables, signals are sent over radio frequencies using wireless network cards and hubs.

• Wi-Fi Hotspot – a venue that offers Wi-Fi access. The public can use a laptop computer, Wi-Fi phone, or other suitable portable device to access the Internet. Of an estimated 150 million laptops, 14 million PDAs, and other emerging Wi-Fi devices sold per year for the last few years, most include the Wi-Fi feature.
(Wikipedia - Hotspot (Wi-Fi))
Why Mobile?
• According to reports in RCR Wireless, sales of Smart Phones are greater than sales of laptops right now and analysts expect that trend to continue for the next five years. (Carson, 2007)
Lindquist/PattersonILS 539 Fall 2007
Why Mobile?• The 5 most popular mobile web apps:
– Gmail Java app for mobile phone.– Google maps for mobile.– Opera Mini (web browser).– Fring (free mobile VoIP software, that lets you
connect to all your IM services and talk for free when connected to 3G or Wi-Fi)
– Shozu (enables you to send videos and photos from your phone to the Web - e.g. your Flickr account, YouTube, Facebook)

Mobile for Libraries Because ...
Mobile applications are multiplying and use is becoming more widespread. For libraries, finding a way to leverage this technology is essential for remaining relevant to users that are increasingly young, impatient, and well-versed in cutting-edge technology.

Commonly Used Mobile Technologies
• Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)– Palm Pilot– IPaq– Sony Clie

What mobile services are libraries offering right now?
• Access to Library and OPAC using interfaces configured for mobile devices:
focus is on the essentials (simple graphics and text).
Examples:– Ball State University– Pace University– Hanover College– American University
Lindquist/PattersonILS 539 Fall 2007
More mobile services offered in libraries
• Exporting of OPAC citations to mobile devices using SMS (communication is
initiated from within the OPAC).
Examples:– Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Swarthmore joint OPAC (Tripod)– Ryerson University– Simmons College– Bowdoin College

Practical considerations forlibraries
• How can you make your library accessible by Mobile Devices?– Determine what services you want your
patrons to be able to access using mobile technology. Possibilities include:
• Catalog access/export functions• Circulation Functions such as renewals, holds• Reference via SMS, email, Skype• Sign Ups for meeting rooms, library programs• Library News and Program announcements
