Whether you’ve lived in Liberty County for a day or a lifetime,we’re excited you are here! We guarantee that our unique perspective on the community, presented here in our membership Directory and magazine will offer you an intriguing and engaging view on a place we love. Whether it’s our cover story featuring a fascinating little girl named elizabeth rogers or the editorial look on the lifelong relationship between a local couple, we guarantee that you will learn something new and possibly fall in love with this wonderful place all over again. We focused a lot in this magazine on business because as a Chamber that is what we support and who we serve. both new and existing, we want them in liberty County, and we want them to be prosperous. We have a feature on some of the older, more established businesses in our community and another feature on two local youngsters who are athletes in their own right and hope to make it big one day. We have also given you some truly noteworthy and astoundingly beautiful photography courtesy of Alimond Photography and Aliyah Dastour. liberty County is rich in both history and culture, with two signers of the Declaration of independence, a revolutionary War fort with the original earthen works, Dorchester Academy where Civil rights leaders like martin luther King Jr. came to plan important marches like the ones that took place in selma, Al and so much more. We have the original rice dikes as leconte Woodmanston Plantation, beautiful camellia gardens in the historic district of Allenhurst and one of the most picturesque coastlines on the eastern seaboard. those of us who are native to the county are fond of telling newcomers and old timers alike that there is always something to do, something new to see or explore, however, these adventures that await you will take a little searching on your part, and the Chamber/CVb is an excellent place to start mapping out your trek! With an active website at www.libertycounty.org, a Facebook page at liberty Chamber or liberty CVb and twitter where we are @libertyCChamber and @libertyCVb, there are many ways to get plugged in and get active! We are also home to the 3rd iD and Fort stewart, the largest military installation east of the mississippi river, with 20,000+ soldiers in residence at any given moment. Formed as Camp stewart during the advent of World War ii, soldiers from our military installation have fought in every major conflict since. Our pride and commitment to making our soldiers and their families at home is rock solid, much like their go to phrase “rock of the marne!” And finally this publication would not have been possible without the dedication of the Chamber/CVb staff: Amanda scott, brandy simon, evanne Floyd, lisa Davis, Anita hughes and mary Prince, you ladies are the best! And mandi martin and elizabeth beasley at With You in mind Publications made the whole process smooth and seamless, i am still not sure if anything ruffles either of them!

W What is the South if not a mecca for food, a haven for the foodie and a place where even the most wizened among us can be brought to tears with a piece of cornbread? You will hear it called “soul food” this manna from a southern woman’s kitchen, but to those of us born and raised among this type of food, we just call it home. As Bill Neal states in his book Southern Cooking, “Southern food is not just food that is cooked South of the Mason-Dixon line. It is a product of time and people as well as place. From 1607 to 1860 European, African, and Native American cultures accepted and modified each other's agricultural, dietary, and social customs and molded them into a distinct regional cuisine.”

It has long been recognized that southern cooking is born of three major influencers, European, African and Native American. It was the advent of new materials, combined with the traditional ways of cooking that created a very unique blend of dishes and tastes that continue to trickle down through

the generations. These blends have given the country a coveted culinary delight that people from all over the world travel to sample and it is the combination of all these influences that makes our cuisine the unique treasure that it is. Sweat tea, fried green tomatoes,

chicken and dumplings, fried catfish, barbeque, fried chicken, shrimp and grits, fried okra and oh so much more bring to mind many a childhood memory for those native to the South. While other parts of the country surely have their own food specialties and offerings, food to a Southerner is much

like air, we need it to survive and not just anything will do. This article is a brief introduction to some true southern staples, as well as a homage to one of our favorite past-times, the Low Country Boil! First off what is a grit? This is always a source of amusement for a southerner when someone from another part of the country tries to understand where grits come from. Basically, grits are coarsely ground corn that is then cooked to be served at breakfast with eggs, bacon or country ham. Or with red eyed gravy and biscuits, yummy! But it can also be used as a side-dish to go with fried fish or shrimp. Recently we have seen cooks repackage this Southern staple in bite-sized containers to serve at weddings and cocktail receptions. Another Southern staple to explore is cornbread. If you ask ten different Southern cooks how to make cornbread you are liable to get ten different recipes, however, one ingredient a true Southern cook will not include…sugar. If available, stone ground corn meal makes the best cornbread, however, most of this generation uses the self-rising brands sold in grocery stores. Another cousin to cornbread is the hush puppy, which is a favorite accompaniment to fried seafood. Also known as corn dodgers, hush puppies are deep fried little cornmeal balls. The term “hush puppy” is said to have originated during the Civil War when Southern soldiers would throw their corn dodgers at the camp dogs whenever they thought Union soldiers might be close, whispering “hush puppies!”. Sweet tea, often called the Housewine of the South, is another must have. With varying recipes to create this cold beverage, Liberty County has developed a Sweet Tea Tasting Contest to accompany an already successful Blues & BBQ festival that happens each September. With numerous entrants to the contest each year, from both home cooks and restaurants, participants get to sample and vote on their favorite sweet tea. Being one of six coastal counties in Georgia, Liberty County is known for their ability to make a good Low Country Boil. Used throughout our community for fundraising purposes or just a good time at home with friends and family, a Low

Country Boil is a great chance to gather a group of people for a good time. There are a variety of ways and recipes for making a Low Country Boil, however, some basic staples include: shrimp, new potatoes, corn on the cob, sausage, whole onions and seasonings of some type (shh! We can’t tell you everything!). There is definitely a sequence to cooking the food, you wouldn’t want the shrimp to go in first and get overcooked, so make sure you find a good recipe or someone who has done it before to ensure success. After the cooking process the pot is usually dumped on a newspaper covered table for those that are eating to be able to pick through and grab what they want. The origins of the Low Country Boil go farther back to the cuisine of the Gullah/Geechee peoples of the Sea Islands along the coasts of

Georgia and South Carolina. Africans in the slave trade often brought with them not only cooking influences from their homeland, but Spanish and French cooking influences as well. Meals for large gatherings of people would have to be made as quickly as possible with readily-available foods. The boil was a quick and easy way to prepare all the foods at once. Even today, Southern cuisine is bits and pieces from our ancestors with recipes that are passed down from generation to generation, some kept so secret they are only shared after the loss of a loved one. It is from traditions like these that you can understand that food is not simply used for nutritional purposes in the south, rather it is a constant reminder of the importance the South places on family, history and tradition. afraid of admitting to his tender heart. How do you survive 50 years of marriage you may ask? “You learn to roll with the flow,” said Fox. “Or you drown if you don’t,” they both chime in together. Fox further said that it is not hard to stay married to a “good girl” like Julie. Oh yeah, in case you wondered, Fox is 70 and Julie is 66, so while “girl” may be a misnomer you can see in Fox’s eyes Julie will always be the 18 year old from Riceboro that he married. While reminiscing on times past the two admit that it takes a lot of work and dedication to make a marriage work. As well as a lot of laughter, saying that the first 10 years are definitely the hardest. In their early years Julie was the Chief of Voter Registration and then the Elections Supervisor for Liberty County, retiring after 30 years on the job. Fox worked for Chemtall (then Riceboro Chemical) before joining the National Guard and working at Mates on Fort Stewart as a small arms technician until he retired. With one daughter, Della and a granddaughter, Hailey, to keep them busy now, Julie and Fox attend Riceboro Presbyterian Church and admit to a combined passion for their friends and family. If asked to distinguish between the two they cannot. “Fox has never met a stranger, we go anywhere and that man will find someone who knows him, laughing, talking and cutting up,” said Julie. While they literally finish each other’s sentences, Julie admits that Fox has a hard time hearing due to his career in small arms repair, never noticing that he stares at her the

whole time, often chiming in and completing her thought when she gets stuck on some piece of a story, so that even though he may not be able to hear the author of this article it’s only because he is so completely focused on her. “When we got married let me tell you what my momma told me, she said, ‘Julie now don’t go getting the silverware engraved because this won’t last a year’,” Julie admits. Forty years later before her death, Julie’s mother, Cordella Jones Browning, finally told her that she thought it was probably okay to get the silver engraved. Hearing about their evacuation due to Hurricane Floyd in 1999, when they took 3 cars full of boxes of Julie’s mother’s old papers and 13 dogs to Macon and the trailer they then subsequently bought in case an evacuation should ever happen again, as well as witnessing their ability to make one another laugh and accept each other’s idiosyncrasies, you can see the blending that has happened over the years. Building common interests has taken time the couple admits. Julie loves to “go junking” while Fox loves to hunt, fish and golf. Fox may not have liked junking at first, but he has gotten into the groove, admitting that anymore furniture in their house would take the addition of a room, but he still likes the hunt with Julie. “I have learned to adapt to the things he likes, I take a book, a camera and a cooler of Diet Coke to go hunting or fishing, but I absolutely draw the line at golf, that I cannot do. I told the Lord the one time I went that if he got me out of it successfully I would never go again, he did and I haven’t,” said Julie. Having been retired for a number of years at this point, they have adopted another child that Julie fondly calls “the Dorchester Civic Center” while laughing. “I admit Barbara Martin and I get most of the credit while our husbands do most of the work,” said Julie, downplaying the tremendous improvements made to what was once an old school and is now a vibrant community center on the east end of the

county. This has been done with the help of a very active board. Okay, by now you are probably wondering, and if you’re not then you are just plain weird….why Foxy? His name is actually Jerry. “Well you see one day when we were out playing ball, it was the 6th grade, or maybe the 7th or 8th, aw heck I can’t remember, I was playing ball with my friends and my Daddy asked if I wanted to go fox hunting with him. The ball belonged to me, times were hard then and nobody else had one, so when I took the ball to go fox hunting, the game ended and the other boys got mad and then called me ‘Fox’ to get

back at me,” he admits. He further said that it took some time to get over it because he was really angry but that eventually the name stuck and he got used to it. “Let me tell you one thing. Both my mother and my grandmother passed away very old. Fox’s mother passed young in her 60’s, from cancer but his daddy was old, if either of us die anytime soon I’m frankly going to be pissed off, we have plans to enjoy each other a good bit to come,” and that my friends is the end of that and this writer would dare you to tell this couple differently. According to the US Department of Commerce, small businesses represent just over half of all private sector employees, pay 44 percent of the total US private payroll and have generated over 64 percent of all new jobs in the US over the past 15 years. The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting all business, large or small, however, we especially understand the trials and tribulations that small business experience and work to act as another storefront and helpmeet to increase commerce and trade. With a mission to support new and existing business, trade and industry within Liberty County, while increasing cultural, civic, educational and overall quality of life of its citizens, the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce had a vision to cultivate and nurture new and existing businesses, increase and improve the quality of life of our citizens and promote economic development within our community. The Chamber works to exemplify diversity, professionalism and ethics through our willingness to collaborate with various cultural, civic and governmental entities

to achieve quality results. Local businesses and leaders see the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce as a cornerstone of our community; with an active, unified membership that is well respected. The Chamber is known for its vigorous advocacy for business, excellent staff and financial stability as a result of the programs it provides that enhance and enrich the lives of all citizens of Liberty County. While new entrepreneurs should certainly be celebrated and lauded for their efforts to begin businesses in today’s economy, it is those who have existed for several years, one who has been in Hinesville 30+ years, and continued to thrive, that we focus on here in this article. We are paying tribute to those who have withstood the test of time and continue to prosper and employ in our community. Celebrating 10 years in business this past July, Matthew Cardella, owner of Edward Jones Investments, moved to Hinesville in 2003 from Valdosta. “I did not know anyone except Evette Layne, who now runs my office. I told Evette that the only way I would take over the branch in Hinesville was if she promised not to quit for one year,” said Cardella. Cardella credits the success of the business to both Layne and the handful of clients who took a chance and placed their trust in a 25 year old young man from southwest Georgia.

He continued by saying that Liberty County has been a great place to start a business, with friendly, helpful and honest people and an abundance of talented and skilled citizens. “We owe our success to the partnership we have with our clients. That relationship and culture of true partnership is the most valuable asset that I manage,” Cardella said. He oversees just about every aspect of his client’s financial affairs, which entails a trust that does not happen overnight. It happens by investing time to deeply understand each client’s specific needs and only after knowing what is important to them, developing a specific tailor-made strategy for each one. The investment of time ensures that he can weigh options together and formulate strategies that address the specific needs of each client. Cardella said that the success of his business in Liberty County is not tied exclusively to any one specific factor; rather it is the sum of all parts. He thinks that Hinesville/Liberty County has so many exceptional features that make it a great place to successfully conduct business as well as raise a family or retire, with extensive opportunities to volunteer and contribute to the community. He met his wife, Jennifer in Hinesville and they are now raising their two boys here. Having been in business 30 plus years, Brinkley’s Floor Covering Inc is owned and operated by Bobby E. Brinkley Jr (Chip) and run by he and his family. Brinkley credits most of their success on repeat customers. “We have very good installation crews and with Hinesville being the military town that it is we also have a lot of home turnovers,” he said. He further said that it is the local customer base that he appreciates for their support of this family run business. Hinesville/Liberty County has provided his family a living for several

He further confirmed that today it’s still a completely family run business with everyone from cousins to aunts and uncles having a role of some sort. Having worked for Georgia Power from 1980-1994, Brinkley took over the business in 2003. He likes their location, which is in downtown Hinesville, convenient for most to access. Being homegrown himself, Brinkley and his family are native to Liberty County and know what that means. They treat each

With a unique vendor based store layout, Plunderful, understands that success means providing customer service and communication to their customer base. They have a dedicated following of customers from Long, Effingham, Chatham, Bryan and Liberty counties. Fullwood is a veteran, with 12 years of retail experience, who came to Fort Stewart as his final duty station and decided to stay. He expects to open a Hinesville location of his successful store sometime in the near future and eventually a Jesup store as well. “By having vendor booths it gives local artisans and home-based businesses, as well as other vendors, the opportunity to showcase their products and services in a storefront venue,” Fullwood said. Ease the Pain Massage Clinic has been in Liberty County for the past four years. Owned by Miguel Ayala, the professional massage services are offered at reasonable prices. “Our massage therapy sessions are tailored to the individual needs of our clients, ensuring that they receive maximum benefits from their experience,” said Ayala. Having started with one employee, Ayala has since expanded to three. He stresses the medical benefits of massage and says that his business provides an outlet to relieve pain and stress. He said that all of his therapists are licensed in the State of Georgia to perform massage and with continuing education that they can offer the most current, top quality services. Ayala is another veteran who decided to make Liberty County home after being stationed at Fort Stewart. “It gives me the opportunity to serve in the local community and help people achieve better health,” he said. In the next five years Ayala has a goal to develop a whole wellness clinic, focusing on massage, chiropractic, nutrition and life coaching, with a natural and holistic approach to healthcare. when we dine out with our families, that ‘wow experience’,” said Christopher Hicks, owner. With his number one rule for both himself and his employees being to abide by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you’d have done unto you….or give the experience you hope to receive,” he said. Cooked fresh to order very day, the kitchen at Chris’s is open so that you can see why they scored a 100 on their health department inspection. With over 65 flavors of sauces and seasonings for not only wings, but also to be added to their angus burgers, rib eye steak sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches and more, there is something that is sure to please everyone. Having opened originally inside of Revolutions, Chris leased the kitchen in the building to start his food fan base, eventually having a take-out business. He expanded his set-up not long thereafter, putting an 18 foot food trailer on the corner of Airport Road and Hwy 196 which he then ran from 2004-2006. Moving into his present location less than a year ago Chris is looking forward

to opening his own sauce company, featuring some of his 19 homemade signature sauces. He also just completed a remodeling of his current location, with the plans to expand sometime soon. “All of this would not be possible without the loyalty, love, patience and understanding from our amazing guests! I look forward to serving you all for many years to come,” said Hicks. The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce is all about promoting and supporting business. It’s about making your hard-earned money go further, fueling the local economy by buying within the county and helping to preserve the unique character of our community. According to Project 3/50 (www.theproject350.net), a research based study that focuses on the importance of shopping local, if half of the employed population spent $50 each month in locally owned businesses it would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. Further for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. Shop local, Shop Liberty. LCM

PPhoto shoot day finds our three lucky gentlemen to be profiled slightly scared, late and unprepared for what it means when we say “magazine photo shoot.” Now while the late part is no surprise with this particular crew, I mean after all they are guys, the lack of confidence in their natural abilities to charm and turn heads is rather surprising. Never mind showing them the photo proofs, they each critique themselves and wish that other pictures had been chosen, which is why we very specifically didn’t let them chose. And women are the more difficult sex you say? A consistent question for these three was “Why me? What makes me special?” In explanation: everything! Why not celebrate your differences and enjoy learning more about three guys who are on the move. With a transmission technician, a soldier in the Army and a lead singer in a band, could we have found a better sampling of guys to show the diversity that exists in Liberty County? I think not!

From kayaking and fishing to hunting and camping, Dakota loves everything to do with nature.

Having been homeschooled, Dakota earned his Associates Degree from Savannah Technical College before entering the workforce. Growing up in Liberty County, he currently lives in Isle of Wight, not far from his parents, Jeff and Robin Woods and his little brother, Gaitlin. Dakota is also a self-taught guitarist who has been performing for five years. He previously played with the Acoustic Rhythms and the Brandon McKenzie Band, however, he now plays lead guitar and does vocals for Liberty County favorite, 3rd Class Citizens.

Growing Up

Page 47: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

At age 39, with 16 years in the military, Ernest Davis is a man to be reckoned with. Having started his military career in the Marines, Ernest decided to transfer to the Army to finish out his 20 years of service. Having married his wife, Courtney, eight years ago, the couple shares five kids between the two of them. With three of those children still at home, Ernest and his wife are always busy, yet they still find the time to give back and be active in Liberty County. Having moved from their last duty station at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, they have been in Liberty County a little over two years and have enjoyed every second. “It’s quiet here for the most part. We like it because the people are all so nice. We plan to retire here, we bought a house,” said Ernest. When asked what made him decide to join the military after growing up in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ernest admits, “I joined off a bet. Ok that sounds bad. I joined because my brother did and

seeing him in his dress blues when he came home and the respect that people gave him, I decided that’s what I wanted too.” It sure didn’t hurt that his brother also told him that he would never make it through basic training because of his attitude. An avid weight lifter and “gym rat”, Ernest could not let that challenge go unanswered. Over a decade later Ernest and his wife decided that with their careers firmly in place that it was time to offer even more back to the community. The second oldest of seven kids, Ernest’s mom often worked three jobs at a time to make ends meet before meeting his stepdad, a preacher and a gardener. “My parents taught me the importance of giving back. We upgrade our wives rings, we buy the next best car, at some point enough is enough and you have to return the favors you have been given,” he said. To that end Guardians in Action was formed in July 2012. Even though the non-profit has not been in existence very long their reach and scope of service is far. From food drives to providing Christmas for an entire Headstart program, this membership based organization has a mission to support those in need.

A man of many interests and talents, 19 year old Dakota Woods is by far the latest of our motley crew, having to use his lunch hour to make the photo shoot and stressing the whole time that he is not going to make it back in time. But quite the shocker, he does own his own tuxedo, go figure! Currently a transmission technician for Richmond Hill Transmission, he will turn 20 on November 30th, so not long after this magazine publishes. Having been homeschooled, Dakota earned his Associates Degree from Savannah Technical College before entering the workforce. Growing up in Liberty County, he currently lives in Isle of Wight, not far from his parents, Jeff and Robin Woods and his little brother, Gaitlin. With a dad in land management for St Catherine’s Island it’s not hard to figure out how Dakota became such an avid outdoorsman. From kayaking and fishing to hunting and camping, he loves everything to do with nature. He was heavily in involved in 4H throughout his school age years and also holds several state swimming titles, which he doesn’t like to talk about. Dakota is also a self-taught guitarist who has been performing for five years. He previously played with the Acoustic Rhythms and the Brandon McKenzie Band, however,

he now plays lead guitar and does vocals for Liberty County favorite, 3rd Class Citizens. The only one actually semi on time for the photo shoot, with little brother Aiden, 10, in tow, Blaine Bunting is by far the most visibly nervous of our three selected. It takes prompting, jokes and a few downright shenanigans to get some of his natural showmanship and gregarious personality to shine through. Lucky for him, we’re persistent! A 2012 honor graduate from Liberty County High School, he is also a native of Liberty County. With generations of his family having also been born and raised here, Blaine enjoys living on the coast with his mother, Tammy Richey and little brother. While deciding which avenue to pursue in his education, Blaine has been picking up odd jobs here and there, having worked a full time job just out of high school for almost a year, wanting to focus more on his dream of becoming a musician. As one of the founding members of 3rd Class Citizens, he plays acoustic guitar and does vocals. Leaning to play the drums and guitar at the knees of his family, he has been dubbed the “comedian” of the four musicians, which also includes Ashley Sands and Jason Stewart. While it is unusual to find someone who knows so emphatically what he or she wants to do, such is not the case with Blaine. He is very focused on his goal of becoming a professional musician, singing as often as he can in as many different venues as he can, trying to vary his experiences and range. So why these three? Our question would be why not? LCM

Midway has something for everyone! www.historicmidway.com • 912.884.3344

Midway, a small historic town, nestled in eastern Liberty County, has something for the entire family. Are you looking for affordable housing, daycare centers, award winning schools, worship centers, employment, shopping, banking, medical and dental needs, dining, fire and police protection and leisure time activities? Then Midway is the place where you want to be. Midway offers a variety of single and two-story homes that are strategically located throughout the City. The educational needs of children are met through several privately owned daycare centers, Liberty Elementary and Midway Middle Schools. The two schools are within walking distance of four planned communities located in a quiet, safe environment that assures uninterrupted learning. Students may complete after school projects by using the facilities of the Midway/Riceboro Library Branch. For spiritual edification, seven worship centers (five denominations) are opened to all who will come. The Midway Industrial Park, along with Trade Port East which is located just outside the city limits, provides excellent opportunities for those who are seeking employment. Shopping in Midway is fun! A grocery store, retail shops, quick marts, and auto businesses offer an array of items to meet your needs. Financial services are available and are provided by two financial institutions. Financial services can also be secured through four tax businesses that are located throughout the city.

The unusual historic city has a dentist, an Internal Medicine Specialist, a health care center and a pharmacy to serve your medical needs. Unlike many small towns, Midway has a wide variety of dine-in or take-out establishments that offers a variety of selections that include seafood, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, sandwiches and home cooked breakfast and lunch. The safety of our citizens is of utmost concern to the Midway City Council. The Midway Police Department is staffed with a chief and four highly trained officers who are consistently visible and provides twenty-four hour protection throughout the City. The City’s Municipal Court is under the auspices of the police department. The Midway Volunteer Fire Department responds to more than twenty calls per month. All the

firemen are certified and several are trained as first responders. During leisure time, the entire family can tour the grounds of the Historical Old Midway Congregational Church, or take a quantum leap back in time and ease through the Midway Colonial Museum and Cemetery, or picnic at Cay Creek Wetlands and Interpretive Center and take a nature stroll down the board walk to view the marshlands, beavers, turtles, and species of birds and snakes. Use our city to connect to all of Liberty County and all it has to offer. Think of us when considering a new home location or starting a new business.

We have enjoyed profiling several children/teenagers over the past several years, exploring what makes them tick and how

each is special and unique, this year is no different. So read on and meet Bobbie Elina McDonald, 15 and Taton Boyd-Scott White, 18; two Liberty County teens who have a lot going for them. A sophomore at Bradwell Institute, Bobbie has a serious passion for all things equine. And floral design. And dance. Ok heck, she has a lot of interests, way too many to explore in a 1,000 word article that she has to share with Taton. Having ridden since she was 8 years old, Bobbie currently rides at Gravel Hill Farms in Flemington, enjoying her horse, Rocky, who is an American Saddlebred. The daughter of Teresa and David McDonald, who own David McDonald Rentals, Bobbie is the youngest with two older brothers, Daniel Dasher, 32 and David McDonald Jr, 19. Having met when Teresa worked at State Farm, the couple has been married for 20 years. While Teresa has to work, she enjoys being able to

work in the family owned business because it offers her the time to be involved in all of Bobbie’s extracurricular activities, giving her the support she needs to succeed. She won First Place in the Junior Floral Design at the State Future Farmers of America competition last year, and Bobbie has also been dancing with Cheryl Brett since the age of 4 years old. Her favorite type of dance is lyrical and she has participated in numerous competitions throughout the years. “If it comes down to a dance competition or a horse show, I choose the horse show,” Bobbie said when asked why she hasn’t competed as much recently in the dance arena. She admits that she likes the horse shows better because you do not have to depend on anyone else but yourself and your horse, which she likes. “We like that she likes to be so busy, some kids do not. It makes her more well-rounded and very knowledgeable while preparing her for college,” said Teresa. Bobbie plans to attend the University of Georgia and study veterinary medicine and admits that her favorite subject in school is science which she “gets” easily while social studies seems more like memorization to her and is not something she enjoys. She loves pizza, and would like to visit Rome one day and says that the person she would most like to meet in this world is her Grandmother Bobbie who passed away before she was born. “I always hear stories from my family about how much I am like her, I would really like to see if that’s true,” she said. An avid outdoorsman, Bobbie has competed in the Regional 4H competitions, which are comprised of some 17 states throughout the southeast. In 2012 she won 3rd place in the Saddleseat Division, a huge honor.

A polar opposite from our outgoing and show stealing Bobbie is Taton Boyd-Scott White. At the age of 18, Taton has already signed up to join the Marines, and will leave July 7, 2014, when his training begins to hopefully mold him into someone selected for force recon. A senior at Bradwell Institute, Taton loves to work out and play golf. Having moved to Liberty County from Fort Campbell 4.5 years ago, Taton lives with his mom, step-dad and little brother, Jarrett, 12. Where did we find Taton you may wonder? In the gym. Crossfit to be exact, where his mom has gotten him hooked on the workouts that force him to “push harder and strive for better,” every time. Important to note is that when Taton couldn’t find his socks for the photo shoot back in June, he did borrow his mom’s so if you like stripes you need to talk to her! He likes to play video games and cannot pick just one as a favorite and admits that anything that his stepdad cooks is going to be awesome, “He makes the best spaghetti ever,” he said. Taton also has a hard time choosing a favorite football team, knowing that it would either be the Seattle Seahawks, the Baltimore Ravens or the Oakland Raiders. With an affinity for the North and Pacific Northwest, he would love to one day visit Washington again where he loves the rain and cold weather. Having lived on the Georgia coast for the past several years he has discovered an aversion to sand and salt water, knowing that he likes the freshwater better. Each year hundreds of individuals volunteer their time at the Recreation Department to help make a difference in the quality of life in Liberty County. Most volunteer to coach the many youth sports teams formed each year. However, there are many improvements and expansions that could be made with the assistance of other volunteers.

Other volunteer positions include coordinators for Special Events, Volunteer Resources, Publicity, Commercial Sponsorship, Sports, Park Overwatch, and Community Service. Helpers are also needed for administrative/clerical work, concessions, bus drivers, chaperones, scorers, timers, and grounds maintenance.

You may find that this is a great way to have a positive influence on your children and their friends. You may even have the special skills or abilities needed to help start a new program. Volunteering may be used as a means to gain experience to help you obtain future employment.

If you would like to get involved in this community and positively influence the lives of others, consider volunteering your time, talent, and abilities at the Liberty County Recreation Department. For additional information, call 876-5359, or visit the LCRD Office.

nIIngénue is the term that comes to mind when meeting Elizabeth Grace Rogers. An innocent and sweet young lady, Elizabeth embodies the characteristics that we all wish our children could embrace. At the age of 10, this 5th grader has her mind set, while still exhibiting an unsophisticated and unpretentious approach to life that allows her to enjoy things like I Love Lucy, which happens to be her favorite television show. The daughter of Jason, 39 and Tracey, 41, she loves attending Joseph Martin Elementary because, “The teachers don’t make it sound like learning, they make it fun,” and she shyly admits her favorite teacher is Ms. Anderson, her reading teacher,

62 Liberty County magazine

Page 65: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

because she loves to read. Her current favorite you might ask? Deep, Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn. Elizabeth says that her favorite books right now are mystery and suspense driven and mom admits that it is hard to chastise her for staying up late to read, even if she gets caught reading late into the night. Both graduates of Bradwell Institute, Jason and Tracey are products of the Liberty County School System and firmly believe in the quality of the

education their only child is receiving. “We have only had great experiences,” said Tracey of Elizabeth’s school years in Liberty County thus far. Having both also attended Georgia Southern University, Tracey got her Master’s from Armstrong Atlantic State University and hopes to one day get her doctorate. “So Daddy can call you Dr. Rogers right mom?” Elizabeth jokes. A family full of fun and a lot of quality time, the Rogers’ enjoy traveling together or just staying home to veg.

Currently Jason is the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services for the Liberty County School System and Tracey has been a PreK teacher at the Liberty County PreK Center for the last 9 years. “I just love this age group. The little ones are so sweet and lovable and every day is a new day for them to keep me on my toes and hopping,” Tracey said. Prior to joining the staff at PreK she was a kindergarten teacher at Button Gwinnett. Having been married for 14 years the couple has dedicated themselves to the community and education system that they believe in, knowing that their daughter is receiving an excellent background upon which to build for her future. “We tried living in Atlanta for one year, that’s all we could take. We decided that it is a great place to visit, but it just was not our cup of tea, this is home,” said Tracey. Having met as camp counselors at the Liberty County Armed Services YMCA, Tracey and Jason are both from Liberty County, with deep family roots in the community. While she is not 100% sure what that future will entail, Elizabeth knows that her first choice of career will be to own her own stables to train, teach and ride horses. An avid animal lover, she rides with Gravel Hill Farms in Flemington. Her horse is a school horse named Andy. Now should the whole horse thing not pan out

Liberty County Magazine 65

Page 68: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

n

Elizabeth’s back-up is a career in marine biology. She happily points out that the University of Georgia has great programs in both fields. Probably does not hurt that her parents are avid Georgia Bulldog fans huh? A horse is only the beginning of the animals in Elizabeth’s life, just at home she has two dogs, Tucker and Scarlett; a cat named Sunny Boy, a Beta fish named Sushi and six chickens that live in Cluckingham Palace (aka the chicken coop). “She won’t even let us kill a spider, we have to capture it in a cup and take it outside to set it free,” said Tracey, smiling fondly at this tenderhearted child of hers. Elizabeth is not just addicted to animals however, she is also active in numerous school and other activities. She is in 4H, Girl Scouts, Chorus and Student Council just to name a few. She loves to cook, admitting that Ramen Noodles are her specialty and Tracey says that breakfast in bed is a regular occurrence around their house as Elizabeth likes to cook and bring her mom a feast to get her day started.

A close family, the three enjoy traveling together, playing board games, decorating for the various seasons and just hanging out enjoying family time. “I want to go to Hawaii because mom and dad got to go and they are so used to me going places they forget that I didn’t go so they’ll mention it sometimes and be like ‘oh yeah you didn’t go’,” said Elizabeth. Now while she may seem the model child Elizabeth readily admits one of her least favorite things to do is homework, a subject upon which neither she nor mom disagree. “It takes time away from my horseback riding,” says Elizabeth. Ok, maybe she whines, just a little, but it’s cute and endearing and the first sign of petulance that has been exhibited and all because she is missing time with her horse. An outside kid, she can bait her own hook and take the fish off too. She says that spring is her favorite season because the weather is neither too hot nor cold and because that is when things are growing and blooming. In a true testament to her

forthrightness Elizabeth admits one of her favorite musicians used to be Miley Cyrus but then she “made bad decisions” and now she does not care for her anymore, preferring country music superstar Taylor Swift instead. She loves old television shows like I Love Lucy, the Brady Bunch and Saved by the Bell which makes mom and dad very happy. “I wish I could say I regret introducing her to Saved by the Bell because I have now had to rewatch each and every season, but if it makes her happy to watch something like that versus what she could be watching then we are happy,” said Tracey. “I would love to meet Lucille Ball if I could choose one person to meet because she is the original Queen of Comedy,” said Elizabeth, admitting that she loves slapstick or physical comedy. She would also like to visit Japan one day because both her great grandmother, Hisayo Cahill, who is now 90, and her grandmother Katy Dasher, were both born in that country. The family attends Savannah Christian Church where they are active parishioners and volunteers. A well rounded young lady, Elizabeth has visited New York City with her grandparents to see Mary Poppins on Broadway and has been to Washington DC to visit the Smithsonian museums. She admits her favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh because of his vivid colors and his ability to go from dark and dreary to bright and colorful all in one painting. Elizabeth’s favorite color is turquoise, which she just happens to be wearing during the interview. It’s easy to see why anyone in her sphere becomes enchanted with this bright and endearing girl, and proves a continued testament to her quality upbringing and the activeness of her parents and family in her day-to-day life. t The story of D.C. Miller Nature Preserve and Learning Center, located in Allenhurst, begins on the other side of Liberty County in Riceboro, at what was historically known as the Woodmanston Plantation. In 1765, American naturalist John Bartram discovered the Franklina Altamaha, a previously “lost” flowering tree that is currently extinct in the wild and exists only as an ornamental tree. Due to this discovery, botanists from around the world flocked to the region during the 19th century in search of rare and previously undiscovered plants. Most of these plants were found under the care of the plantation founders youngest son, Louis LeConte. Trained as a medical doctor, LeConte was interested in botany and horticulture as a way to create medications and remedies for his patients. However, this interest developed a botanical and floral garden that became internationally famous. Especially well known for his camellias, some of which reached a height of 15 feet and had trunks over a foot in diameter, LeConte’s botanical gardens measured over an acre and produced a wealth of information about coastal Georgia’s native flora and fauna. Several species of the LeConte camellias can still be found in Allenhurst around the D.C. Miller property. The community of Allenhurst evolved around 1904 when Byers H. Allen built the Allen Lumber Company, just four miles south of Hinesville along the Atlantic Coastline Railroad. A small community evolved and was known as Allenhurst, after the mill owner. A post office was established in 1909.

Page 74: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

In the same year, the Allen Lumber Company was bought out by Ernest V. Dunlevie. He also purchased 200 acres of land from E. P. Miller which became present day Allenhurst, according to the Liberty County Cultural and Historic Affairs Committee. To sustain future growth, Dunlevie built a large mill town with over 100 homes, all of which were connected by wooden boardwalks. The town also had “two swimming pools, a two story hotel, a commissary, a church, a school, a clubhouse, and both a doctor and dentists office,” according to the Liberty County Cultural and Historic Affairs Committee. “The Dunlevie Lumber Company grew into the second largest mill in the Southeastern United States and employed over 1,000 workers,” said Andrew Standard, D.C. Miller Trust Board Member. “The Mill thrived for 20 years until the Great Depression hit, and that became the demise of the large timber industry. Of the 100 or so homes originally constructed, the upscale two story houses were reserved for company executives, of which only six remain. They are easily recognizable on Dunlevie Road, and include Dixie Stables, several private residences and the Dennis and Jan Waters Learning Center. “The Dennis and Jan Waters Learning Center was originally the home of Herbert Dunlevie. The Waters’ donated land and the existing building to the D.C. Miller Trust, which includes the 1400 acre tract that encompassed the original Miller house, which burned in 1989,” said Standard. Restoring the 2500 square foot Herbert Dunlevie House offered many unique challenges:“With only a few pictures and little documentation, the building was

72 Liberty County magazine

Page 75: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

Liberty County Magazine 73

Page 76: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

instead deciphered in order to reveal the changed or missing details that were needed to be restored. Largely, with the assistance of Savannah College of Arts and Design Students the mysteries were uncovered. Porches and stairways had to be torn down. Plumbing, wiring, and new septic systems were added as a modernization (but complimentary) to the original design. Also ramps were added for ADA accessibility. The project was developed with the ability for new uses in mind. The final results changed the single family dwelling into an assembly occupancy where the general public could have access and up to 30 people could congregate/meet at any given time,” said Standard. The D.C. Miller Trust was started by Gloria and Dorothy Miller as a way to protect the lands formerly owned by their family from development. The Board of Trustee’s has a mission to first preserve and protect the property as the Miller sister’s wished and secondly, to share the property via educational

experiences to the youth and adults as one of Liberty County’s great historic sites. The property is currently available for use for photo shoots, weddings, or community meetings. Tours can be arranged for school groups, church groups, or other organizations to see the flora and fauna D.C. Miller has to offer. On the East end of the county, off Islands Highway in Sunbury, rests a historic site with a very different story to tell about early Liberty County and its inhabitants. Seabrook Village is a unique, African-American living history museum, which dedicates itself to telling the story of freed slaves from 1865-1930. The Seabrook and Trade Hill communities were established through federal land grants made possible by General William T. Sherman’s Field Order 15 (1865), a policy that is more commonly known as “forty-acres-and-a-mule.” Newly freed men settled on the lands they used to work as slaves with the desire to build a better future for themselves and their families. The idea for Seabrook Village began in 1990 when the historic Seabrook School faced demolition. Former students, many of whom were in their 70’s and 80’s, and the community rallied together to save the school which acts as a reminder of faith, hard work, education and self-determination for those educated within its walls. Although the initial project was the old school, which was rededicated in October 1991, the Seabrook Village Foundation expanded its vision to include a variety of structures that give a better view into the life of the Seabrook Community. Seabrook Village consists of six structures- the Seabrook School (1991), the Ripley Corn Crib (1992), the Gibbons-Woodard House (1994), the Bowens Barn and Tool Gallery (1994), the Bowens Chicken Coop (1995), the Bowens House (1994), Dorchester Train

Depot ( 1994), the Delegal-Williams House (1996) and the Riceboro Freight and Passenger Depot (1996). “Maintaining the authenticity of the buildings has been an ongoing challenge for Seabrook Village Foundation. Renovations have been made to each of the structures, however, because they are wood, repairs with period materials are often needed to retain the historical significance to recreate the ‘living story,’ said Dr. Mattie Brown, President of the Seabrook Village Foundation Board of Directors. “Several renovations are currently being planned to include repairing the fencing around Seabrook Village, repairing the roof on the Gibbons House, replacing the grape arbor and two gates at the Bowen House and repainting the exterior of the school house,” said Krystal Hart, secretary of the board. These renovations, along with others, will enable the foundation to host events and provide group tours as done in the past. “In the past there have been tasting events, cane grinding, fall festivals, old time Christmas, Halloween hayrides, crab boils, reenactment of ‘old time’ graduations and more,” said Brown. “Growing up in Sunbury, I remember attending summer camp and learning about how my ancestors lived once they became freed slaves. We would sew, cook fried eggs and rice with fatback, grind corn to make grits, prepare flapjacks (pancakes) from scratch, make dolls, wash clothes on a scrubbing board, pump water from a well, etc. for 6 hours a day! I can’t believe I had that much fun without technology or air conditioning,” reminisced Hart. The old school and property have long been considered the epicenter of the Seabrook and Trade Hill communities because of the inspiration that was drawn from having the opportunity to learn. The school was considered a “vehicle of change” for the community members. “The property and Seabrook Community are reminders of a time of major accomplishments in the African American community. A time when excuses were not acceptable. Hence, the theme at Seabrook is ‘Makin’ Do.’ The people of that time had much pride, love and joy in what they had. This is why the Seabrook School is at the heart of the community even now,” said Brown. Seabrook Village Foundation is a group of relatives, community workers, and volunteers with an interest in the Seabrook community. Sharing a common goal of

Liberty County Magazine 75

Page 78: Liberty County Chamber of Commerce Magazine 2013

preserving the history of African-American people that lived on Liberty County’s coast and wanting to preserve and share that story is what drives the Seabrook Village Foundation. In order for the Seabrook mission to be realized, it will take the community- families, schools, civic groups, government, and businesses to get involved by make a commitment to the cause. “This property is important to Liberty County because it is actually a snapshot of how life was shortly after blacks were freed. The homes of some of my family members are located on the property. My grandparents attended the school as children and are still together after 61 years of marriage! It is amazing to see how far we have come, and personally, it’s motivation for me to continue achieving great things for our community,” said Hart. LCM

The academy operated until 1940 and then became a cooperative to help area residents with farming, economic and household issues. Its most recent historical role was as a sit6e for civil rights movements. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. planned his campaign to integrate Birmingham during meetings there in the mid-1960s. The Dorchester Improvement Association is spearheading the effort to restore Dorchester Academy to its past glory and conducts annual fundraisers, the biggest of which is the annual Walk to Dorchester, usually held in mid-June. The walk retraces the average distance students had to walk to attend the school.

It features 7,400 square feet, including an auditorium, five classrooms, a full kitchen and an outdoor pavilion. The schoolhouse, originally built in 1927, consolidated the schools at Sunbury, Colonels Island, Riceboro and Jackson Chapel. That building burned and the school was rebuilt in 1938. It served grades one through seven until 1951, when it was closed. On Feb. 4, 1958, the Liberty County Board of Education sold the property for $10 to the nonprofit Dorchester Civic Center, Inc. Over the years the building fell into a state of disrepair and was closed due to the hazardous conditions. In 2008, Dorchester Civic Center, Inc. reactivated and began an effort to restore the historic building so it could again become a vital part of the community. The renovation was completed in 2010.

Today, visitors can stand within earthworks from the War of 1812 and view scenic St. Catherin’s Sound. In the museum, exhibits describe the once bustling colonial port at Sunbury that was larger than Savannah.

Now, 63 acres of the former 3,356-acre LeConte-Woodmanston Plantation has sprouted into a restored version of the colonial operation. While none of the plantation’s buildings remain, the site in Bulltown Swamp is a natural wonder with interpretive signs marking trails and the restored formal garden. In July 2010, portions of LeConte were closed due to a lack of funds, and the site’s hours of operation now are by appointment only. Those who set up tours still can meander down the nature trail along the ridge of one of the many dams built by slave labor in the 1770’s. The dams were used for rice cultivation and many of the trunks, necessary to control the movement of water, have been rebuilt and replaced.

MeLOn BLuFF naTuRe and HeRITaGe PReSeRveWhere: 2999 Islands Highway, MidwayWhen: Open only by appointment for horseback riders or day-users in groups of six or more. Contact: 912-880-4500 or www.melonbluff.comAdmission: Day-use park entry $3 per person, $15 per horse. This 5,000-acre stretch of land has a rich history and a bounty of historic treasures. Once the home of Native Americans, Spanish settlers sailed up the tidal creeks in 1526 – 39 years before they founded St. Augustine. With the Spaniards came African slaves, making this the entry port for some of the first slaves in America. The English occupied the area in the 1730s, creating several plantations including Melon Bluff. Remnants of this culture are still present in Melon Bluff’s abandoned rice fields and old ferry road. Along with a forest of native plants, Melon bluff is home to 309 species of birds, including wild turkeys, owls, woodpeckers, marsh birds, pelicans, painted buntings, hummingbirds, osprey and cardinals. The nature center also hosts a number of interactive education programs and day events.

FORT STeWaRT MuSeuMWhere: 2022 Frank Cochran Drive, building T904, 2When: 10am-4pm, Tuesday-Saturday; closed Sundays, Mondays and federal holidays.Contact: 912-767-7885Admission: Free The military history of Coastal Georgia comes alive at the Fort Stewart Museum, which chronicles the stories of Fort Stewart and the 3rd Infantry division from their origins to the present. In addition to showcasing the artifacts and service of the 3rd Infantry Division – the famed “Rock of the Marne” – the museum also highlights the early days of camp Stewart. Furthermore, it offers a look at the towns absorbed when the federal government bought the land that became the sprawling base in 1940.

Liberty County Historic Sites The museum pays tribute to the 24th Infantry Division that called Stewart home from 1974 to 1996. Information about the base’s change from the Taro Leaf to the Rock of the Marne also is provided. There is an exhibit of the 3rd ID’s march to Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Special exhibits focus on 1st Lt. Audie Murphy, the most decorated soldier of WWII, and Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith, who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for action in Iraq in 2003. Smith is the division’s most recent Medal of Honor recipient.

Midway MuseuMWhere: martin Road and Route 17 SouthWhen: 10am-4pm, Tuesday – SaturdayContact: 912-884-5837 or www.themidwaymuseum.orgAdmission: $7 adults, $6 seniors (62 and above), $3 students (K-12th grade), preschool children free, prearranged group rates available, military $1 off discount. Patterned after a raised, cottage-style house typical in the 18th century, the museum is a replica but holds authentic pieces and a wealth of information. The museum was built in 1957 and has been gathering artifacts, documents, pictures and furnishing since then. Several special days are held at the museum each year, including the annual Christmas tea. In late 2009, a new collection opened featuring documents and household items from the Charles Colcock Jones family, whose letters became the basis for “The Children of Pride,” a compilation about life on Southern plantations in the mid-1800s. Next door to the museum is the Midway Congregational Church, built in 1792. The church is a classic example of a colonial house of worship with neither electricity nor plumbing. The nearby cemetery was established in the 1700s by Puritan settlers. Many famous Liberty Countians are buried there. About 300 of the 1,200 graves still bear their original markers, while others crumbled or were destroyed by Northern troops who used the cemetery as a cattle pen during the Civil War.

Geechee Kunda cultural arts center and MuseuMWhere: 622 Ways Temple Road, RiceboroWhen: 10am-4pm, Tuesday-SaturdayContact: 912-884-4440, [email protected]: No fee; donations accepted. Geechee Kunda is located on lands where the rice, cotton and indigo producing Retreat Plantation once stood. The center was created as a means of contributing to efforts to preserve and perpetuate the knowledge of important Africa cultural elements in the United States. In addition to permanent and rotating exhibits, the center’s year-round activities include classes, workshops demonstrations and lectures covering a broad spectrum of subjects that allow visitors to explore various aspects of continental and diaspora African culture. Exhibits feature artifacts from Africa and this area, some dating back to the 1700s, including authentic slavery artifacts, Geechee relics and Jim Crow-era memorabilia. The center also has a gallery and gift ship that stocks merchandise such as books, textile, artifacts and crafts.

Live Oak ChurchWhen it comes to the number of retirement accounts you have, the saying “more is better” is not necessarily true. In fact, if you hold multiple accounts with various brokers, it can be difficult to keep track of your investments and to see if you’re properly diversified.* At the very least, multiple accounts usually mean multiple fees. Bringing your accounts to Edward Jones could help solve all that. Plus, one statement can make it easier to see if you’re moving toward your goals.*Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.

To learn why consolidating your retirement accounts to Edward Jones makes sense, call your local financial advisor today.

Having More RetirementAccounts is
