  • 3About the Liberation

The Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany on May 10th 1940. Instantly placed under German occupation, Holland suffered from the highest levels of Jewish deportation during the Holocaust - higher than any other occupied country. By the end of 1944, the Western regions of the country were suffering from a famine so harsh, it would be forever known as the "Hunger Winter.

It was on May 5th, 1945, that the whole country was finally liberated by the complete surrender of all German forces. After crossing the Rhine at Wesel and Rees, Canadian troops, after all the hardships and defeating all odds, successfully forced the complete surrender of Germany, thereby re-establishing Holland's freedom.Even though Holland faced a terrible hardship during the Second World War, the country nevertheless flourished into the remarkable destination it is today. In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit, and is considered to be an alpha world city by the Globalization and World Cities Studies Group. Many do not know that it was fundamentally Holland that came to invent not only the world's stock exchange, but also important technologies such as compact discs, bluetooth, wi-fi, DVD's, and blu-ray.

But on May 5th of every year, Holland takes a moment to stop. The entire country comes together and looks back at what they have overcome, to specifically recognize the country and people from the other side of the world who had fought so heroically for their freedom from 70 years ago.

The appreciation, recognition, and understanding of what happened here is an emotionally invigorating experience for any Canadian, as we meet, embrace, share our intertwining history, and celebrate with our the Dutch community. We are very excited to begin this incredible and eye opening journey, and re-discover the special and historical bond we share with this remarkable country.

The D-Day to Holland Itinerary Day One - April 26thDeparting from Toronto's Lester B Pearson International Airport, you will begin your journey to Paris, France. [Breakfast and dinner will be served on board].

Day Two - April 27thUpon your arrival in Paris you will be met by your tour manager and coach driver. As we make our way through the historic city you will be given a chance for photo opportunities at the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. We will then continue on towards the Normandy coast to visit the famous Pegasus Bridge. This important strategic position was assaulted by the British 6th Airborne Paratroopers with amazing precision in the early morning hours of June 6th. We will take time to view the glider landing zone and see the first house liberated in Europe, the Cafe Gondree. Tonight is our "Welcome Dinner" and a chance to get to know everyone on tour![Overnight - Bayeux (D)].

Day Three - April 28th Today, we will explore Bloody Omaha focusing on 'Easy Red', ironically the worst sector and the site of the American cemetery and existing German bunkers. We then tour along the coast to the existing Battery at La Chaos before viewing Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches. Then lunch at the Juno Beach Centre and Juno Beach before visiting Bernieres sur Mer and onto the Canadian cemetery of Beny-sur-Mer.In the afternoon we will follow the Canadian Advance and a visit to Abbaye des Ardennes where Kurt Meyers 12th SS executed 20 Canadian POW's. We finish the day at Verrieres Ridge, scene of the Black Watch sacrifice during Operation Spring.[Overnight - Bayeux (B, D)].

Day Four - April 29th This morning we will travel to the Seaside port of Dieppe. The picturesque beaches of Dieppe are also the scene of Canada's darkest day in World War Two. On August 19th 1942, 907 men died in a space of just a few hours. Operation "Jubilee" as it was called, was an attempt to amphibiously land troops in occupied France in a rehearsal raid for D-Day. The catastrophe that unfolded is the main reason harsh controversy surrounding Dieppe continues to linger today. We will explore all three landing zones, the cliffs, gun emplacements and the many memorials to our Regiments that bravely fought here in a hopeless situation. Our day will end with a visit to the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery close by.[Overnight - Arras (B, D)].

Day Five - April 30thThis morning our visit will include the preserved battlefield of Beaumont Hamel, the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, the Courcelette Memorial and the Trench Museum in the famous town of Albert among others. After lunch, we will visit the Vimy Ridge National Historic Site of Canada. On April 9th 1917, Canada's volunteer army fighting together for the fist time accomplished what no other army could do previously; take Hill 145 and the surrounding area from the Germans. We will tour the restored tunnels and view Walter Allward's masterpiece monument, ourWorld War One National Memorial.[Overnight - Arras (B, D)].
