General Studies Option (Plan “H”) 

The General Studies Option is designed for students interested in a broad liberal arts education with studies in many subject areas rather than concentrating on one field of study. This option is ideal for students who: 

•  Enjoy studying a variety of subjects instead of specializing in just one area. •  Want a major that develops their reading, writing, research, and critical thinking skills. •  Are interested in having the flexibility to choose from a wide range of classes. •  Want the opportunity to gain real world experience before graduation. •  Desire to advance professionally by earning a BA degree. •  Plan to pursue a graduate program in a variety of fields such as law and public 

administration. 

The General Studies Option provides students with a rich educational experience across a broad range of academic disciplines such as the language arts, math, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and the visual and performing arts.  General Studies Option students are required to complete an Area of Specialization consisting of at least 21.0 units providing them with the opportunity to study a particular area in depth by either selecting a minor or creating their own interdisciplinary specialization.  In order to provide students with “real world experience” before graduation, students will also be required to complete 20 hours of community service, an internship, or a service learning class during their course of education.

General Studies Option and General Education (GE) Students pursuing the General Studies Option complete their General Education and Title V (U.S. History and U.S. Government) requirements outside of the major.  Even though many of the course choices in this major count for G.E., General Studies Option students may not double‐count any courses from G.E. within the major.

Area of Specialization General Studies Option students are required to complete an Area of Specialization consisting of at least 21.0* units providing them with the opportunity to study a particular area in depth by either selecting a minor (Option A) or creating their own interdisciplinary specialization (Option B): 

Option A.  Complete one of the following minors*: African Studies, American Indian Studies, Anthropology, Armenian Studies, Art, Asian American Studies, Biology,  Central American  Studies,  Chemistry,  Chicano Studies,  Classical Greek and Roman Civilization, Communication  Studies,  Computer  Science,  Economics,  English,  French, Gender  and Women’s  Studies,

Geography,  Geology,  German,  History,  Humanities,  Human  Resource  Management,  Information Systems,  Italian,  Japanese,  Jewish  Studies,  Linguistics,  Management,  Marketing,  Math,  Pan  African Studies, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Russian, Sociology, Spanish, Theatre, or Urban Studies. 

*Some approved minors require completion of less than 21.0 units.  Regardless of the size of the minor, students must earn a minimum of 120 units for graduation purposes.  Students must declare their minor and seek advisement in the department in which they have chosen the minor. 

OR 

Option B.  Interdisciplinary Specialization: In  consultation  with  a  Liberal  Studies  advisor,  develop  an  interdisciplinary  specialization proposal.  It  should  focus on a particular  theme  in  the  Liberal Arts  (please  see  the guidelines below).  The Liberal Studies Program must approve all proposals. 

Interdisciplinary Specialization Guidelines 

1.  The Interdisciplinary Specialization must reflect a carefully structured interdisciplinary program, which includes at least two but normally three disciplines. 

2.  The Interdisciplinary Specialization should focus on a particular theme in the Liberal Arts. For example: Los Angeles Studies, Arts and the Media, Comparative Cultural Studies, or General Sciences. 

3.  Students should propose an Interdisciplinary Specialization that will enhance their future educational and/or career goals. 

4.  It must consist of at least 21.0 semester units of which 15.0 units must be at the upper division (300‐499) level. 

5.  The Interdisciplinary Specialization and the General Education/Title V requirements may not be double counted. 

6.  Six units in the Interdisciplinary Specialization may be double counted with lower and/or upper division major requirements with approval of the Liberal Studies Program. 

Real World Experience requirement In order to provide students with “real world experience” before graduation, students are required to complete one of following: 

1.  Complete 20 hours of community service by volunteering at a non‐profit agency OR 

2.  Complete a formal internship:  student may visit the Career Center for possible internships.  It must consist of at least 20 hours and could be paid or volunteer OR 

3.  Students may take a course within the major or general education that includes service learning. Typically, these classes require at least 20 hours of service learning as part of the course. 

Please be sure to submit a signed Experience Verification Form (Appendix #4) to the Liberal Studies Program after completing this requirement.  Note:  Experiences used to fulfill the community service, internship, or service learning requirement must be completed within the last five years.

Q:  Why should I consider taking my classes on‐line? A:  On‐line classes are extremely convenient for students with busy lives.  You can complete 

your classes in the privacy of your home or at work during your lunch break, on the weekends, or late at nights should you choose to.  The department offering the course will be able to give you information about whether the course is offered completely on‐line or as a hybrid course.  By taking classes on‐line you will also save on travel time to CSUN.   On‐ line classes can be more interesting than the traditional lectures since professors may present class content in many different innovative ways such as narrated PowerPoint presentations and videos.  You may also have the opportunity to participate in class discussions via an electronic bulletin board. 

Q:  How do I enroll for on‐line classes? A:  All on‐line classes are listed under the “Online Courses at CSUN” section of the Schedule of 

Classes each semester.  You enroll in on‐line classes like any other class through the portal (www.csun.edu/portal).    After  enrolling  for  the  course,  you must  email  the  instructor  in order to complete your enrollment. 

Q:  I have never taken an on‐line course.  Do I need to be a computer expert to take on‐line classes? 

A:   No.  You don’t have to be a computer expert to succeed in on‐line classes.  As long as you have had some experience surfing the net and have used email in the past, you should be able to handle taking your classes on‐line. 

Q:  Do I need specific software to take on‐line classes? A:  Students must have access to a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape in order to 

take classes on‐line.  In addition, access to Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint) and email are highly recommended. 

Q:  Will I be able to use CSUN’s server to gain wireless access? A:  Yes.  Matriculated CSUN students have access to CSUN’s server at home or on campus.  For 

assistance on how to gain wireless access, please visit http://www.csun.edu/itr/ . 

Q:  In the Schedule of Classes, some on‐line classes have a specific meeting time.  Does that mean I will have to log in at that specific time? 

A:  Yes.  If an on‐line class has a specific meeting time, it means you must be at your computer at that specific time—the class meets in real time.  Please feel free to direct your questions about the class meeting time to your instructor.

Q:  In the Schedule of Classes, some on‐line classes have a “TBA” meeting time.  When will I have to be available for the class? 

A:  Classes with a “TBA” meeting time do not have a required meeting time.  Typically, professors for these classes give an assignment and it is due by a specific deadline. 

Q:  Who should I contact if I have difficulty with my on‐line classes? A:  The Office of On‐Line Instruction provides support for on‐line classes.  Their phone number 

is (818) 677‐6558 and they are located in SH 441.  The Help Desk is another office you can contact.  Their phone number is (818) 677‐1400. 

Q:  Do on‐line classes cost the same as other classes? A:  There is no extra charge for taking classes on‐line.  You will pay the same tuition and fees as 

any other class offered through the regular schedule. 

Q:  Will I be able to complete my entire major on‐line? A:  At this time, all major requirements excluding HUM 391 and LRS 491 are offered on‐line. Please note, General Studies Option students complete their General Education (GE) requirements outside of the major.  Please check the Schedule of Classes on SOLAR for GE courses offered on‐line. 

Q:  Are General Studies Option students guaranteed a seat in on‐line classes? A:  Liberal Studies students are NOT guaranteed a seat in on‐line classes.  You may attempt to 

enroll in on‐line classes based on the registration date that has been assigned to you by Admissions & Records. 

Q:  Do I earn residency credit if I take my classes at CSUN on‐line? A:  Students who complete on‐line classes as a matriculated student at CSUN will earn 

residency credit toward graduation.  ONLY 24.0 units completed through the College of Extended Learning can be counted toward residency. 

Q:  If I take on‐line classes will I be able to attend classes on campus as well? A.  Yes.  Matriculated students may take their classes on campus or on‐line at CSUN. 

Q.  Will I be able to enroll in General Education and/or elective units on‐line? A.  Yes.  You may take General Education and/or elective units on‐line in addition to the major

Academic advising is an educational process that facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education.  It fosters intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning (NACADA, 2004). 

Mission of Advising Services At CSUN, the mission of academic advising is to assist students in forming intentional partnerships that connect their needs, values, abilities and goals to the educational program of the university.  Academic advising is an on‐going relationship and a developmental process.  It is the shared responsibility of faculty, staff, and students.  Academic advising incorporates the continuum of teaching and learning moments that both stimulate and support students in their quest for an enriched quality of life.  These interactions assist students in realizing their academic and professional goals and facilitate timely graduation.

Advisee Responsibilities – What Students Are Expected To Do As an advisee, you have clear responsibilities in the advising partnership in order to be successful:

Seeking Advisement Prior to your first meeting with your advisor, you must complete an on‐line workshop.  An evaluation of your previous coursework will be mailed to you within 10 to 15 business days once the on‐line workshop has been completed.  An advisement appointment may be scheduled after receipt of the evaluation by calling the Liberal Studies Program.  Students are not assigned to a specific advisor.  It is recommended that you meet with an advisor at least once a year or more frequently as needed.  The busiest advisement times are May through July and November through December.  It is highly recommended that students plan ahead and make their advisement appointments during non‐registration periods. Students on academic probation or disqualification should seek advisement for Spring between October 1 st and November 1 st and for the Fall between March 15 th and June 15 th .

HELP at your fingertips! (ANSWERS to Your Most Frequently Asked Questions) 

I want to map out my next few years at CSUN so that I may graduate by my target date.  Where should I go for help? You can visit the Liberal Studies website at http://www.csun.edu/liberalstudies and click on 4 and 5 Year Degree Plans.  These plans will serve as a guide in creating your "MAP" (My Academic Planner) at http://www.csun.edu/anr/soc/guides.  You may make an appointment with a Liberal Studies Advisor to discuss the MAP you have created. To make an appointment with a Liberal Studies Advisor, please call (818) 677‐3300. 

The class I want to enroll in is full.  How do I get a permission number? You should contact your professor for a permission number.  Permission numbers are issued at the discretion of the professor, usually on the first day of instruction. 

I need to repeat a class but SOLAR won’t let me enroll in it.  What do I do? You may ONLY enroll in a course you have taken previously through SOLAR once the semester begins. If you plan to repeat a course for a third time, you must obtain approval from the Associate Dean of Humanities. 

I want to enroll in a class that has been restricted to one of the Liberal Studies special programs (ITEP‐ Junior, ITEP‐Freshman).  How can I get a permission number to enroll in the class? Courses restricted to special programs are ONLY available to those students who have been admitted to those programs.  Sometimes if the class is under enrolled at the start of Non‐Restrictive Registration, seats are made available to other students. 

I want to add a class after the third week of the semester.  How do I do that? During the fourth week of the semester, you may try to add a class by obtaining signatures from your instructor and the Department Chair offering the course using the Change of Schedule Petition form at http://www.csun.edu/anr/forms/petition.pdf.  The signed form must be filed with Admissions & Records.  After the fourth week of the semester, adds are not permitted unless there are extraordinary circumstances. 

I need to drop a class after the fourth week of the semester but I was told it was too late to drop.  Is that true?  What can I do about it? Requests for a withdrawal are rarely approved after the fourth week of the semester unless the student can provide written documentation verifying an extraordinary event beyond his/her control has occurred which will make it impossible for the student to complete the class.  Physical or mental health issues, relocation out of the immediate area, and activation for military duty may be acceptable reasons for a late withdrawal.   If you are not approved for a late withdrawal and stop attending, you will earn a “WU” which will lower your GPA and is equivalent to an “F”.  Assuming you have not repeated 16.0 units at CSUN, you may repeat the course and take advantage of the grade forgiveness policy.  You should contact your Academic Advisor to discuss your specific situation. 

I am having a difficult time coping because of my personal problems.  Where can I go for help? The University Counseling Center has very qualified and caring professionals who can help you through difficult times.  Their services are completely confidential and free of charge.  You can make an appointment by calling (818) 677‐2366 or stop by the Counseling Office in BH 520.  You may also visit their website at http://www.csun.edu/counseling.

I study very hard but I am still having a difficult time learning new material in my classes.  Where can I go for help? You may be struggling academically because of a learning disability.  The Center on Disabilities offers confidential testing and counseling services to CSUN students.  Once you are evaluated, if needed, they can provide you with special services to help you succeed at CSUN.  They can be reached at (818) 677‐ 2684 or visit http://www.csun.edu/cod. 

I am having financial difficulties.  I may have to work more hours in order to pay my bills.  Where can I go for help? Increasing the number of hours you work may have a negative effect on your academic performance. You may want to contact the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office for financial assistance.  You may be eligible for grants, forgivable loans, low interest student loans, or scholarships that will ease your financial difficulties.  The Financial Aid and Scholarships Department is located in the main lobby of Bayramian Hall.  The Financial Aid Office may be reached at (818) 677‐4085 or visit http://www.csun.edu/finaid. 

I am a Liberal Studies major and just received a letter stating I will no longer be eligible for financial aid.  Where do I go to appeal this decision? Students who did not meet the CSU, Northridge Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy may petition for reinstatement if there are extenuating circumstances.  Please visit http://www.csun.edu/finaid/sap.html for more information.  SAP petitions must be submitted to the Undergraduate Studies Office located in University Hall 215.  Questions regarding the SAP Policy should be directed to the Financial Aid Office at (818) 677‐4085. 

I have earned an Incomplete in one of my classes.  How do I go about completing this course and earning a grade? Be sure to speak to your professor to get a clear idea of what you need to do to complete the course. You will have up to two semesters (excluding summers) to complete your remaining requirements. Professors may use their discretion to hold you to an earlier time line for completion of an incomplete. Please note:  You must not re‐enroll in a course if you have been given an Incomplete.  Re‐enrolling in the course will mean that you are repeating the course which will have an impact on the number of units you may repeat at CSUN in the future. 

I need proof that I am a full time student.  Where do I go? The Admissions & Records Office can verify your full‐time status. 

I am having difficulty in my math class.  Where can I go for help? You may visit the Learning Resource Center located in BH 408. 

I need help with my writing assignments.  Where can I go for help? You may visit the Learning Resource Center located in BH 408.

I think the grade I received in my class was unfair.  Who do I need to contact? Grade disputes should be discussed with your professor first.  If the issue is not resolved to your satisfaction, you should make an appointment with the Department Chair of the course.  If you are still not happy with the outcome, you may make an appointment with the Associate Dean of that college. 

I am having a problem with my professor.  What should I do? You should make an appointment with your professor to discuss your concerns.  After meeting with your professor, if the issue has not been resolved to your satisfaction, you may make an appointment with the Department Chair for the class you are taking.  If you are still not satisfied with the outcome, you may make an appointment with the Associate Dean of that College.

Would I get credit for a course in my major, if I enroll in it on a CR/NC basis? No, major courses may not be taken CR/NC unless they are only offered on that basis (i.e. MATH 310Lab, 1.0 unit). 

I think I want to change my major from Liberal Studies to something else.  Whom should I contact? If you know which new major you would like to pursue, please contact that department directly and speak with one of their advisors.   If you need career counseling before declaring your new major, please contact the Career Center at (818) 677‐2878 and meet with a career counselor who may be able to help you make a decision using various career exploration techniques. 

I need to take a semester off.  Whom should I contact? Unless you have been academically disqualified from CSUN, you are not required to notify anyone to take a leave of absence from CSUN.   You may leave for up to two consecutive semesters but must re‐ enroll after that time to continue your status at the university.  If you do not return after being gone for the two consecutive semesters, you will be required to reapply to CSUN. 

I want to study abroad.  How does that work? The first step is to contact the Study Abroad Advisor at the Office of Student Development and International Programs by calling (818) 677‐2393.  After consulting with the Study Abroad Advisor, you must bring to your Liberal Studies Advisor course descriptions for the courses you would like to complete abroad.  All courses must be approved by a Liberal Studies Advisor prior to your departure. 

I want to attend another CSU campus for a semester.  What is the procedure I need to follow? The Intra‐system Visitor program allows continuing students temporary leave from CSUN to enroll for one term at another CSU campus. Temporary leave arrangements may be made with the CSUN Office of Admissions and Records within the application deadlines outlined by the host campus. Both registration at the other campus and return to CSUN will be arranged by the Office of Admissions and Records without further application by the student. Contact the Office of Admissions and Records, Bayramian Hall 150 or call (818) 677‐3760 for more information and applications.  All courses taken through the Intra‐system Visitor Program must be approved by a Liberal Studies Advisor.

HOW DO I CALCULATE MY GPA? Each grade is given the following point values:

Each course is worth a specific number of units.  Most courses are 3.0 units although some might be 1.0 or 5.0 units, etc.

ROADMAP TO SUCCESS 

Please read the following information to successfully navigate your way to graduation. 

§  Check your CSUN email on a weekly basis as email is the primary source of communication for the campus. 

§  Visit the Liberal Studies website frequently at http://www.csun.edu/liberalstudies to access important information about the major, registration, events, etc. 

§  See your academic advisor at least once year—more frequently, as needed. 

§  Before attempting to register every semester, there are a few steps you should follow to ensure that your registration will go smoothly: 

•  Access your Portal account to determine if there are any registration holds preventing you from enrolling during your priority period.  There are a variety of holds you could encounter: advisement holds, health center holds, holds related to missing documents, etc. 

•  Make sure that your tuition will be paid by the deadline.  Failure to pay by the established deadlines will result in disenrollment from your classes. 

§  Be aware of Add/Drop Policies – Students are only eligible to adjust their schedule (add classes, drop classes, or change the basis of grading) through the end of the third week of the semester.  During this period, you need to use the SOLAR Web Portal to make the change. 

Note:  if you are trying to add during the first 3 weeks, you will need a Permission Number from the instructor of the course to enroll in a course.  Always verify that the change has gone through by printing out and carefully reviewing your new schedule.  It is the student’s responsibility to verify correct enrollment each semester and to complete all courses they are enrolled in. 

Students are not automatically dropped from classes they are not attending, especially during the first week of instruction.  Failure to attend or complete a class will result in a grade of “WU” (Unauthorized Withdrawal) which counts as “F” in the GPA. 

Attempting to add or drop courses after the third week requires additional approvals and a justifiable reason to attempt the change.  Be aware, in most cases you will not receive approval of attempted schedule changes after the third week.  For add/drop deadlines, visit: http://www.csun.edu/anr/soc/adjsched.html

Grades and GPA Policies 

§  Credit/No Credit Coursework: Courses that are taken on a CR/NC basis of grading are not calculated into the GPA – only graded courses are used. BUT you need to remember that all courses that are used to meet GE, Title 5, and any course taken to meet requirements in the major must be enrolled in on a graded basis, i.e. cannot be taken CR/NC, unless the catalog states otherwise. A maximum of 18 units of CR/NC coursework can be taken in the degree. (See 2008‐2010 University Catalog) 

§  Repeat Policy: Effective Fall 2009, students may repeat up to 16 units of coursework for grade forgiveness.  The better of the first two grades will be used to calculate the GPA and the lower grade will be ‘forgiven’. However, both grades will appear on official transcripts. Students are allowed to repeat only if they have received a grade of C‐ or below in their first attempt and are not permitted to enroll in a repeat course until Nonrestrictive Registration. Students are not permitted to enroll in a class for a third or subsequent time without the written consent of the Associate Dean of the major. After the 16.0 unit limit has been reached, a maximum of 12 units will be averaged into the GPA. Courses taken at other schools cannot be repeated at CSUN to improve the grade point average. Courses taken at CSUN cannot be repeated at other schools to improve the grade point average. 

§  Policy on Incomplete Grades: Students may request a grade of “I” or Incomplete only if they have satisfied a substantial portion of a course but due to unforeseen and fully justified reasons they were unable to complete the course by the end of the semester. The work that is incomplete normally should be of such a nature that it can be completed independently by the student for later evaluation by the instructor. An incomplete shall not be assigned if the student must attend a major portion of the class when it is next offered. A final grade is assigned when the work agreed upon has been completed and evaluated. Students should not re‐enroll in any course in which they have received an incomplete.  For specific instructions and the Request for a Grade of Incomplete Form, please visit http://www.csun.edu/anr/forms/request_incomplete.pdf 

Unless an approved “Request for Extension of Time to Remove Incomplete” form has been filed with Admissions and Records, an “I” must normally be made up within one calendar year immediately following the end of the term during which it was assigned. This limitation prevails whether or not the student maintains continuous enrollment. 

An incomplete will be counted as equivalent to an F (or an NC if applicable) for grade point average computation under the following conditions: 

•  If a student fails to complete the assigned work within one calendar year. 

•  If an undergraduate student re‐enrolls in the course before making up the work during the calendar year.

§  Probation and Disqualification: If either your CSUN or your Cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 you are automatically placed on probation. A student on probation is allowed to enroll in no more that 13 units in any semester they are on probation. 

Disqualification means dismissal from the university (no longer eligible to enroll – please review the catalog). Students will be disqualified when: 

•  Freshman (0‐29 total units earned): CSUN or Cumulative GPA falls below 1.50 •  Sophomore (30‐59 total units earned): CSUN or Cumulative GPA falls below 1.70 •  Junior (60‐89 total units earned): CSUN or Cumulative GPA falls below 1.85 •  Senior (90 or more total units): CSUN or Cumulative GPA or overall falls below 

1.95 

Students must be on probation one semester prior to disqualification.  However, effective Spring 2009, if your Cumulative GPA falls below a 1.0, you will be immediately disqualified without having been placed on probation first.  This will not apply to first‐ time‐freshman whose GPA fall below 1.0 after their first semester. 

All disqualified students who are readmitted must maintain a 2.0 GPA every semester until both Cumulative and CSUN GPAs are 2.0 or higher.  Failure to do so will result in a second disqualification and dismissal from CSUN. 

§  Student Conduct Code ‐ Students and applicants for admission who do not abide by the policies on conduct are subject to discipline as provided by the Educational Code. This discipline could include any of the following: expulsion, suspension, administrative probation, or a lesser sanction as dictated by campus authority. Whenever it appears that there has been a Student Conduct Code violation, a complaint will be filed with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs for investigation. 

§  Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) – This federal act deals with the privacy of student records and the rights granted to students regarding their educational records. Under this act, an educational or student record is any record containing personally identifiable information that is directly related to a student and maintained by the University or its agents. Except as permitted by the Act, the University will not disclose student educational records without the consent of the student. FERPA seek to ensure: 

1) that all students have access to their records, 2) that students have an opportunity to challenge the content of their records, 3) that the university will obtain consent prior to the disclosure of certain student records to third parties, 4) that students will be informed of their FERPA rights.

Applying for graduation There is a 4‐step process to apply for graduation for ALL Liberal Studies Options: 

1.  Make an advisement appointment with a Liberal Studies advisor to apply for graduation at least ONE YEAR in advance of your anticipated date of graduation by calling: (818) 677‐3300. At least one semester of work must be completed in residence at CSUN before a Graduation Evaluation can be prepared. In order to receive a Graduation Evaluation prior to registration for your final semester, you must file before the application deadline.  Students who apply after the deadline* will pay a late fee. 

2.  Prior to your advisement appointment, you must complete your "MAP" (My Academic Planner). You are required to bring your MAP to your “grad check” appointment to apply for graduation. For instructions on using the MAP, please review the following website: http://www.csun.edu/anr/soc/guides/map.html 

3.  At your appointment, an advisor will update your advisement form, review a preliminary graduation worksheet, and sign your completed Application for Bachelor's Degree and Diploma form. 

4.  Students will submit their completed Application for Bachelor's Degree and Diploma form along with any necessary attachments, and the application fee to Admissions and Records in the Bayramian Hall BEFORE the application deadline*. 

*Note:  For application deadlines, please visit the semester calendar at http://www.csun.edu/anr/soc/calendar.html.  The Application for Bachelor's Degree and Diploma will be valid for 10 business days once it is signed and dated by a Liberal Studies Advisor. 

Graduating with honors To receive honors at graduation, a student must: 

•  Complete a minimum of 45 units of work in letter‐graded courses at CSUN; •  Earn a CSUN GPA of 3.50 or above; •  Earn the following GPA in all undergraduate courses, including transfer work: 

o  Summa Cum Laude: GPA of 3.90 or above o  Magna Cum Laude: GPA of 3.75 to 3.89 o  Cum Laude: GPA of 3.50 to 3.74 

Commencement Liberal Studies majors participate in the College of Humanities commencement ceremony.  Students who have applied for graduation for Fall, Spring, or Summer will automatically receive an invitation to attend the commencement ceremony typically held in May.

General Studies Option Careers What are my career options as a General Studies Option student? General Studies Option students are employed in a variety of fields.  Your Liberal Studies degree signifies to others that you are a capable well‐rounded individual who can accomplish complex tasks and communicate well with others. 

Many employers are looking for individuals who possess certain skill sets instead of a degree in a particular area.  Communication, writing, critical thinking, and computer skills are among these skill sets.  Ability to work in a team and independently is also important to employers. 

How can the Area of Specialization requirement help me with my career goals? General Studies Option students are required to complete an Area of Specialization.  They have the choice of either completing an approved minor or creating their own interdisciplinary specialization.  This aspect of the major provides students with a great opportunity to complete courses that will enhance their future employment opportunities. 

For instance, a student who is interested in a Business related career such as marketing, human resources, or management, may either complete a Business minor or create an individualized package of business classes that will provide a foundation for a successful business career. Students who are interested in working in the social services field may choose to select either a Psychology or Sociology minor or again create an individualized plan with the assistance of their academic advisor. 

The possibilities are endless.  The Liberal Studies advisors along with the Career Center counselors can guide you to find the right combination of career and academic preparation so that you can achieve your career goals. 

How can the “Real World Experience” requirement help me with my career goals? General Studies Option students may meet the Real World Experience requirement in the major by completing an internship, community service, or enroll in a class that has a service learning component.  This requirement in the major can provide students with the opportunity to explore and gain experience in a particular area.  Students who participate in internships often times are hired by the same organization after graduation.  The real world experience requirement can help you establish invaluable contacts and help you decide whether a particular career is right for you.
