WHAT IS LI-FI ?

Li-Fi means “Light Fidelity”, in simple terms it can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi.

LI-FI is transmission of data through illumination ,sending data through a LED light bulb that varies in intensity faster than human eye can follow.

GENESIS OF LI-FI

Harald Haas, Professor at the University of Edinburgh, began his research in the field in 2004; he gave a debut demonstration on a Li-Fi prototype at the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh on 12th July 2011.

LI-FI TECHNOLOGY

The LEDs can be switched on and off very quickly, which gives nice opportunities for transmitting data.

we can achieve 10Gbps –meaning we can download a full high-definition film in just 30 seconds!

WHY ONLY VLC ?

Radio Waves

Infrared Rays

Visible Rays

Ultraviolet Rays X- Rays

Gama Rays

HENCE WE ARE LEFT WITH ONLY THE

VISIBLE - LIGHT SPECTRUM

•Radio Waves: Radio Spectrum is congested but the demand for wireless data is doubling each year.•Infrared Rays: Infrared, due to eye safety regulation, can only be used with low power.•Ultraviolet Rays: Ultraviolet light is good for place without people, but otherwise dangerous for the human body.•X- Rays: X-rays have similar health issues.•Gamma Rays: Gama rays can’t be used as they could be dangerous to human race.

CONCLUSION •This Technology is still in

its infancy, the possibilities are numerous and can be explored further.

•If this technology can be put into practical use, every bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspot to transmit wireless data and we can proceed towards a cleaner, greener, safer, and brighter future.
