BrochureMarch 29, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description:A two sided (duplex) folding brochure for International Language Pro-grams (ILP).

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I started out by sketching, and that is when I came up with the idea for a circular brochure. It seemed fitting for an international company, and I wanted one panel to feature an image of the Earth, so I set up my circular layout in InDesign. I used the path-finder tool to combine the three circles into one shape.

Next, I created my logo in Illustrator. I placed white text over a teal cir-cle, then created outlines on the letters so I could manipulate the length of the “L” and “P.” Again, I used the Pathfinder palette to cut out the letter shapes from the circle, then colored the individual shapes with my color scheme.

I placed my logo on the front and back panels of my brochure, and used the repeating elements of the three dots throughout my design. The three dots not only created unity, but also made my color scheme evi-dent throughout the entire document.

Before placing my images in InDesign, I clipped them in Photoshop using the quick selection and lasso tools. Then I placed them and used the text wrap feature to align my text around the images.

Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photo-shop

Objective: To inform the audience of what ILP has to offer, and to pique their interest in participating in the program.

Audience: People interested in teaching, interacting with children, and having a fun experience abroad.

Description: An inspirational design to encourage the audience to par-ticipate in FamilySearch indexing.

Process: As I was brainstorming this design, I decided on a triadic color scheme with teal, gold, and violet. Using good lighting and composition, I took this photo with a focused foreground and a blurred background. It wasn’t until after I took this picture that I realized that the lip balm and the sky provided the exact colors I was looking for! Photoshop and I became fast friends as I altered the photo using levels, vibrance, se-lective coloring, and sharpening. I used the rule of thirds to set up my design, aligning the lip balm on the left third and the text on the right. I then incorporated my color scheme name using the circles as repeating elements. I used the color picker to match the shape elements with the colors in the photo. I emphasized my title with a bold, serifed font, and contrasted my body copy by using a simple sans serif. Learning to work with the layers in Photoshop was a awkward at first, but I soon became comfortable with the software. I look forward to learning more tech-niques in Photoshop as I continue designing.

Objective: My goal was to inspire the audience to participate in Family-Search Indexing. I wanted them to feel like it would be worth their time, and that even a small contribution can make a big difference in the world.

Audience: People who are looking for a simple way to serve others.

Color scheme and color names: Triadic (Teal, Violet, Gold)

Business CardMarch 1, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description: Business card designs for appledge graphic design, using an original logo.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I decided to use the same company that I used for the logos project, but I brainstormed a new logo design, which I created using Adobe Illustrator. I made the body of the ap-ple with the pen tool and used the ellipse tool (with two anchor points changed to corners) for the leaf. I put a rounded stroke on both the “e” and the leaf so that the logo would have an overall flowing look.

I designed my business cards in Adobe InDesign and achieved a good diagonal balance, with the apple logo in the top left corner and the watermark (at about 2% opacity) in the bottom right corner. I used the rule of thirds when placing my watermark; it fills up two-thirds of the page both horizontally and vertically. I made sure to have plenty of white space that flowed to the edges of the page. I added my contact information in a text box and placed it in the bottom left corner. I used the same logo, title, and contact information on the business cards, and used the red and green lines for repetition and unity in the design.

Objective: I created a logo and design that is very sleek and profes-sional, but also customer friendly (hence the apple-themed company). I want to send the message that this is a cutting-edge graphic design company.

Audience: Anyone in need of a fresh, professional graphic designer.

FlierJanuary 25, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description: Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate lead-ership conference.

Process: I started with layout sketching to brainstorm ideas for the shape map of my design. From there, I used Adobe InDesign to create the flier. I made the title the focal point by putting the text box at an angle, and by using a bold font. I contrasted the 80 pt sans serif title with an 11 pt oldstyle body copy. I grouped related items and aligned each element with another element. I created visual flow by having the people in the photo face the title, which angles downward to lead the viewer’s eyes to the body copy. I was given the photo, content, and logo for this flier.

OBJECTIVE: The flier is designed to appeal to recent graduates, and communicate to them that this conference will be interactive and enjoy-able, but also professional.

Audience: Recent graduates, ages 22-30.

Web PageMARCH 15, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description: a web page made to showcase a logo that I created.

Process: I made this web page by editing HTML and CSS documents in TextWrangler. I had not prior experience with coding, so it was very fas-cinating to see how simple changes in the text could make a big visual difference in the web page. I also used the W3C code validator (http://validator.w3.org/) to check my work, which was very helpful as I tried to get a handle on this new skill.

I started with my HTML, adding markups to the text and inserting a link for my logo image. Then I linked the HTML to a preset CSS file, to which I made changes in order to customize the webpage. I opened my logo in Adobe Photoshop to find the hex numbers for the red and green, then pasted them into the CSS text. I changed the my header font to Century Gothic, to match the “e” in the logo, and contrasted that with Georgia, and oldstyle font, for my body copy. I decided to increase the body width so that the overall web page had a square shape, to match the general dimensions of my logo.

Objective: to convey that Appledge Graphic Design is a professional, cutting-edge design company, and is a great source for any visual de-sign projects a customer may have.

Audience: anyone in search of a professional graphic design company.

Event AdFebruary 1, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description: This is an advertisement that I designed for a fundraising event: a cheesecake sale that will benefit the Charitable Children’s Fund of America.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I scanned the cheesecake image from a recipe book and used that as the basis for my design. I used Microsoft Word for all of my designing, and found that Word is actually a very ca-pable design program. I chose a rich, warm color scheme that matched the image I used, and made the background a cream color to match the cheesecake. I kept my body copy simple and concise, contrast-ing the cream font with colored boxes behind. I emphasized my title by using a decorative font that matched the personality of the design. I then used the squares to unify and add repetition and flow to my design.

Objective: This ad is for a fundraiser to benefit children in need through-out the United States. My goal was to reach an audience that is interest-ed in purchasing cheesecake, so I made the image the focal point of my design. If they are interested, they will come closer and see that not only can they buy cheesecake, but their money is going toward a good cause as well.

Audience: Charitable cheesecake lovers.

Color scheme and color names: Analogous color scheme; Red, Brick, Orange.

Scanned images used, sources, original sizes, location of scanner used: I scanned the original image (8.5×11 inches) from a Lion House Desserts recipe book, using an HP LaserJet M4345 MFP scanner in the BYU-Idaho McKay Library.

LogosFebruary 22, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description: Three logos for a cutting-edge graphic design company.

Process: I started by sketching and brainstorming until I came up with the idea for Apple Edge Graphic Design. I used Adobe Illustrator to create all three logos, and had lots of fun with the pen tool! I used the pen tool for the body of the apple. For the leaves, I made an ellipse and changed two of the anchor points to corners. The triangle tool came in handy for making the stem. I brought contrast to my designs by using serif and sans serif fonts within the same logo. My favorite part about Illustrator was definitely the pen tool. It is very versatile and powerful.

Objective: I want to communicate that this graphic design company is creative and fun, but also sleek and professional.

Audience: People looking for a good graphic designer, ages 20-40.

Three Color Scheme and Color Names: (Top): Complimentary, Red and Green. (Middle): Analogous; Lime, Green, and Teal. (Bottom): Monochro-matic, Red.

Three sets of Title / Body Font Names & Categories: Futura (sans serif) and Georgia (Oldstyle); Cochin (Oldstyle), and Kannada Sangam MN (sans serif); Century Gothic (sans serif).

MontageFebruary 15, 2014 - COMM 130-05 - Brother Kerr

Description: An inspirational montage poster designed to encourage more smiling in the world.

Process: I started by placing the image of the sunset in Adobe Photo-shop. I cropped the image to 8.5×11. I then took my portrait (to which I added effects in iPhoto: antique and color boost) and used the lasso tool to place the portait on top of the sunset. I placed the eyes at the top left third of the design, and placed my text on the right third. I also used the brightest part of the sunset to make the text my focal point. I used selective color to change the scarf’s color from burnt red to more of a light pink/violet color. Then I added a mask on the portrait layer so that I could blend the images. I used the brush tool with 30% opacity to grad-ually blend the images together. I used the black paint to blend the edg-es of my hair into the sky, and to blend the flowers in with my scarf and my blouse. I think this design wouldn’t have the same happy feel to it if I hadn’t made the two images into a montage. If they were rigidly sepa-rated, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the same effect of serenity and contentment.

Objective: The goal of this design is to get the audience to smile. Did it work?

Audience: This design is aimed at a very broad audience; really, anyone who needs a reason to smile.

Filter / Colorization: I used colorization on the scarf; it was originally burnt orange, but I used selective color to make it a pink/violet so it would match my color scheme.

Color scheme and color names: Split Complementary: Violet, Green, Yellow

Title Font Name & Category: Didot, Oldstyle.

Copy Font Name & Category: Avenir Next, Sans Serif.
