NEWSLETTER

It’s Octobers and the leaves are starting to change, welcome Autumn. Last month we had the District Deputy visit and the preliminary seem positive. As expected we have a few issues to address but all and all I am happy with what we have accomplished. Thank you too John Wyman, Belinda Ashworth, Marge Carter and Bob & Liana Pinard for all the help in preparing for the visit. In September we also initiated six new members, Mark Vasilauskas,

Megan Skillin, Melissa Legare, Kevin Jewett, Tina Crowley, and Roger Paradis. If you happen to see any of them please make sure you welcome them to the Elks. Pictured are the new members with their sponsors. It is that time where we have to re-visit as a Smoking/Non-Smoking Lodge. The vote will be taken at the meeting on Monday October 28. If this is something you are passionate about one way or the other please make sure your voice is heard. If you cannot make it to the meeting, absentee ballots are included in this newsletter and must be returned by that meeting. We have a very exciting month of activities in October. We will be continuing dinner and music every Friday night—look to facebook and e-mails to see what is on the menu and who will be enter-taining us. Our 5th Annual Variety Show featuring “The Legends” (Elvis, Sinatra, Tom Jones…) will be Satur-day October 12th. This evening we will also be welcoming State President Dwayne and First Lady Barbara Guy for their Lodge visit, please come by and say hi, I know they would love to see you. This is a very casual evening, with great entertainment and lots of fun. Tickets are on sale at the bar for $10 each—if you have a group, make sure you get your table reservations early. Social hour be-gins at 6:30 with the show starting at 7:30. On October 13 the Lodge will be hosting a “Christmas Affair”, a fair for the holidays, from-9am to 3pm. If you want to start shopping for the holidays, have lunch, win prizes or a 50/50 and help your Lodge (all proceeds go back to the Lodge) stop by and add your support. If you are interested in being a vendor, there are a few booths left, e-mail Adriane at [email protected]. On Friday October 25th we will be having a Halloween Party on the Grill side with music by Lena and Ray starting at 7:00. There will be prizes for the best costumes, so if you get into the Halloween spirit you could win a great prize. Yours in Elkdom Michael R. Aube Exalted Ruler

From the “First Lady” October is ENF month. What is ENF you ask? ENF stand for Elks Nation Foundation and their mission is “To help Elks build stronger communities. We fulfill this pledge by investing in communities where Elks live and work. We provide tomorrow's leaders, our youth, with lifelong skills; honor the Elks' pledge to never forget our veterans; help the state Elks associations accomplish their charitable objectives; and fund projects that improve the quality of life in local Elks communities.” This year the ENF board approved a distribution of $26,000,000 to Elks lodges across the country for programs that include Drug Awareness, Hoop Shoot Contests, Veterans Service Programs, Community Investment Programs and other programs that help Elks organization accomplish their charitable objectives. Over the years the Lewiston Elks Lodge and our community have benefitted from ENF contributions for New Flag Poles at Androscoggin Hospice House and the Lewiston Armory and Geocaching lessons and equipment to our local Boy Scouts just to name a few. In order to accomplish such great giving, donations from Elk members are necessary. Based on membership, each Lodge is asked to contribute to ENF. The Lewiston Lodge’s ENF Chairperson is Karen Staples and she works diligently to not only meet but to surpass the Lodges goal, because she has seen and knows the difference it makes in our community. Please help the Lodge achieve and surpass its goal—your help really does makes a difference. Please call Karen today to give your support—any and all do-nations make a difference. Maureen

From the Secretary I am having a difficult time believing that the year is half over. Thank you for your support and understanding as I continue my growth as an Elk and as your secretary. We recently hosted our District Director’s annual visit; all things considered we did quite well. One thing that was pointed out is that the State of Maine requires us to vote on our smoking policy every three years; the last time this was done was in January, 2010 so we are a bit overdue. The process is a two-step process. First the employees of the lodge have to vote to maintain the current policy – smoking is permitted only in the enclosed room with smoke eaters adjacent to the grill room. If the employees approve the continuation of the policy, then the members of the lodge will have an opportunity to vote on the continuation of the policy. Ballots have been distributed to the employees of the lodge with a request to return them as soon as possible. Assuming the employees approve continuing the current smoking policy, a vote of the lodge will be held at the second meeting of October. In the event that you will not be able to attend that meeting, you will find a ballot in this newsletter that can be returned either by mail or in person prior to October 28, 2013. Membership continues to grow. However, we currently have 56 members who have not renewed their membership for this year. If you know any of them, please take a mo-ment and ask them to renew. If you would like to find out who has not renewed, please stop by the lodge on any Monday or Tuesday between 3 PM and 6 PM; those are the hours I will be in the office. Recently, I successfully completed the Server Seller Program. What this means is that I can volunteer some hours to open the bar. Effective October 1, 2013, when I am in the office on Mondays and Tuesdays, the bar will be open between the hours of 3PM and 6 PM. I have heard some members say that if the grill room was open on their way home from work, they would be inclined to stop in. Here is your opportunity; please stop in and have a beverage of your choice. Sealed tickets and Queen of Hearts tickets will be available. Finally, back to membership, we have 10 candidates awaiting initiation and 3 reinstate-ments. The next initiation will take place on Friday, November 15, 2013. I hope you will join us as we conduct the Initiation Ceremony and then socialize with the newly initiated members. Yours in Elkdom, John Wyman

BINGO Just a quick note about BINGO. We are doing well; the attendance is still between 90 and 115 players on a regular basis. The Emblem Club no

longer staff the kitchen during BINGO. Scott Bussiere has stepped up to lead the Elks Kitchen Crew. If you would like to volunteer to help out,

you can call or text Scott at 207-240-6172.
