MAsterplAnningThe generating of new and regeneration of old, a master plan is the visual statement of a dynamic strategic plan. They should be tangible statements of where a space is now, what it should be in the future and what is required to get there.

We will champion your masterplanning requirements, aligning them with the local and national development strategies to maximise your sites potential. Our experience in masterplanning includes large mixed use urban regeneration, small, medium and large scale retail and industrial zones, varied residential developments and university campus design.

Within the current emphasis for maximising brownfield development with a low carbon design solutions Lewis and Hickey will bring innovation and style to your enterprise.

interior DesignWe understand the essential link between “inside” and “outside”: the successful integration of interior design to a building sends a potent message reinforcing brand, expressing function, displaying heritage or declaring a corporate identity.

The creation of stylish and exciting contemporary interiors goes beyond mere decorative finish to include strategic space planning optimising work spaces, technical understanding of specialist environments and specification of sustainable materials.

We design sustainable interior solutions for retailers, offices and workplaces, the leisure industry, banking, healthcare, residential, higher education and student living. Aligned to our interior design capabilities, we provide brand development as an integrated part of creating new identities for our customers.

brAnD MAnAgeMentBrand is the personality that identifies a product, and we understand the importance of correctly implementing a client’s brand and corporate identity. Difficulties encountered by clients in maintaining brand consistency encouraged us to develop our L&H Studio proposition and create a suite of products to provide a versatile ‘environment guide’ solution to facilitate accurate brand deployment.

These guides enable the intelligent control and management of bespoke environment guides for corporate, retail and banking businesses. They are an accurate, responsive and cost-effective implementation tool for brand environments utilising the latest digital media and publishing software.

Available in a variety of formats to provide controlled, structured information delivery from a single point with the benefit of access control to ensure that the right audience sees only the correct information. An always up to date, searchable resouce that is acessed on the fly and in situ.

store plAnningA quality retail space provides the opportunity for a branded ‘point of difference’ that adds to the customer experience, increasing footfall and sales. All store layouts are different, so when developing and deploying a strategy we look at the business model to deliver the layout best suited to the brand.

Customer journey, focal points, staff levels and space standards are all of great importance, yet a solution must also comply with current guidance & legislation and address specific security and operational needs.

A clear layout strategy and the correct product placement location can provide sales information and inform marketing decisions while providing a logical and ‘user friendly’ customer environment, with easy product identification and brand separation. Even where these factors have already been considered, we work with the client team to ensure that these aspirations are understood and that the brief and delivery programme are consistently met.

visuAlisAtionAs architects our role is to provide a vision and express our ideas through illustrations and drawings. We have developed a number of traditional and digital techniques to present our work which can be commissioned independently.

Our services include; coloured concept sketches and storyboards, 3D building views (internal and external), in-context 3D building views (photo realistic) and finally computer generated fly-throughs and movies.

Our recent movie animations also include ‘transitions’ from existing to proposed buildings or features. This is an excellent way to promote a vision. These can all be produced in-house by our dedicated team.

Our staff are actively engaged in the latest trends for zero carbon design, attending industry led forums conducted by the BRE, BREEAM and LEED.

The Trocadero has been one of London’s premier leisure destinations for over 350 years in the form of theatres, restaurants, music halls and hotels and is located between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square in an area that has the highest footfall in Europe and is known throughout the world as a symbol for London. The site is made up from a number of different buildings constructed and extended at different periods; each of these having their own opportunities and challenges. Many of the lower units and the western buildings are occupied by tenants that will remain and the brief was to develop, refurbish and convert nine floors into a high class hotel with destination bar, roof terrace with breathtaking views of the London skyline and a floor dedicated to celebrity suites.

We developed the interior concepts for the rooms and for the front of house / destination bar areas. The clients’ ambition is that the new hotel facility will put the Trocadero firmly back as the premier London leisure destination and become a prestigious hotel of international repute.

Hotel La Tour is situated in a very prominent location in Birmingham which serves as a gateway to the city from the south and as a primary link between the retail and business heart of the city and the new city park and emerging east side beyond.

We were tasked with maximising the potential from an unusual triangular Brownfield site, whilst creating a striking and memorable contemporary building, offering a sanctuary of comfort and a unique architectural experience. The four star luxury hotel includes ancillary facilities such as a restaurant, bar, gym, conference facilities, open south facing terrace, parking and servicing, and topped with two multi storey penthouse suites that offer views across the city and beyond.

Planning permission was granted at committee with a unanimous decision from the councillors, and they commented that the building was ‘an impressive design’ and that it was ‘welcomed as a major addition, not only to the city but to the city skyline’.

We were commissioned to transform a number of diverse City Centre sites into modern health and fitness centres, including a severely dilapidated Grade II listed Cinema (incorporating a unique neo-Egyptian auditorium designed and built in the 1930’s), a 1970s concrete framed car park /office block, a former car dealership, and a number of other locations. The buildings now house high-technology training and sports facilities, including state of the art Gymnasiums, Cardio-Theatre, Swimming Pools with Steam and Sauna Rooms, Aerobics Rooms and Static-cycling. Other facilities include instruction, changing and relaxation areas as well as a specialist Pilates and Yoga Studio, a Crèche, Treatment and Therapy Rooms.

The buildings exposed columns and open ceiling spaces were incorporated in the designs to create an industrial theme with a contemporary feel. The café entrance areas have views through to the Swimming Pool and Gymnasium Areas. The projects were completed within narrow financial constraints to a challenging construction programme, providing new use for otherwise obsolete buildings.

The Bennachie Visitor Centre was a Design Competition winner for a resource centre to be located at the foot of the Bennachie range.

The centre was to be multi-purpose and was to include exhibition space, audio-visual facilities and toilets for walkers and yet was to be sensitive to the woodland setting.

The building is compact but involves a complex relationship of spaces reflecting the building’s various uses. Natural materials were used with the main structure being timber frame with local stone used for the courtyard and landscaping. Consideration was also given to energy conservation systems, the most notable being the “breathing wall” system.

‘Two Sites: One Vision’ creates two landmark buildings which will revitalise the waterfront and enhance the perception of Bognor Regis as a place to live, work and visit as well as being the biggest construction project in the regions history. On one side, the Healthy Living Site; Gateway Towers and the other, the Leisure Heart Site. The Healthy Living Site provides two stunning towers together with a health centre and new Council offices. The seafront Leisure Heart Site creates a sustainable mixed-use leisure destination and focal point for the town and incorporates a theatre, cinema and hotel complex, residential apartments, restaurants, shops and a public square provides year round usage whatever the weather.

The scheme utilises the coastal wind for power generation via its integrated wind turbines that are fitted with LED lights on the wing tips that light up to form dynamic hologram images after sundown. As well as adding visual impact to the design the turbines also form part of the environmental proposals that aim to establish Bognor Regis as a beacon for sustainable development. The design establishes two key focal points on the skyline and seafront and responds to its environment using local materials, retaining a sense of context within its surroundings.

Lewis & Hickey were engaged by Rank Group plc to design and implement Hard Rock Cafes, retail outlets and clubs across the UK and Europe. Sites included London, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and Dublin and many more.

We were responsible for checking potential sites for suitability and for assembling local implementation teams where required to gain consents. Over 40,000 pieces of music memorabilia were incorporated into the designs and displayed on walls, floors and ceilings often creating added drama to the spaces.

Each site had its own constraints and opportunities and was an individual design response to the location whilst maintaining the rugged and hard-edged image of the brand. The L.E.D ghost guitar chandelier hanging over the bar in Prague was custom made and is 5 metres long.

For many years, we have been responsible for a number of key projects for McDonalds. These included many unique interiors, new drive-thru restaurants; refurbishment works to existing branches, internet station installations and a host of other initiatives.

We applied a unique design concept to each location and introduced a ‘café style’ environment. New fixtures, furniture, lighting and wall treatments completely transformed these restaurants into vibrant, contemporary meeting places. All sites traded throughout the refurbishment works, and these prestigious projects were completed on time and to budget.

More recently, our Mumbai office has continued the implementation of our expertise in these family restaurants, and has completed a number of new format branches in India, with more in the pipeline. From the largest Drive-thru to flagship branches, we continue to create stylish, easy to maintain environments in tune with the McDonald’s ‘forever young’ theme.

Located on a 6.5 acre site, YMCA Ahmedabad covers 18,600m2 of world class sports and banqueting facilities. In addition, a 9,300m2 lawn has been landscaped to provide a perfect setting for events for up to 7000 people. Complimenting the gardens is the four storey structure itself. The sundecks, terraces, soft roofs and screens are elements taken from traditional architecture but interpreted into a contemporary context. The elevational elements add an interesting play of light and shadow in the interior while making it sustainable in the extreme weather conditions.

The club building is designed around a central courtyard with the swimming pools, wet play areas and cafes becoming the focal points. The triple height, open-to-sky atrium with its lush greens and water features creates a vibrant interactive space and provides visual connection between the various floors. The facilities along with the multimedia technology for the banquets, state of the art gymnasium equipments, Olympic quality surfaces for jogging tracks, tennis courts and swimming pool technology will make it one of a kind in India.

A prestigious new youth centre development that replaces a dilapidated structure, integrated alongside and enhance an existing Grade II listed Georgian property. The requirements for this extensive development were targeted at improving the facilities for both the existing youth user group and the wider community, outlining the wish to strengthen and revitalise the activities and usage for this site. The design meets the challenging criteria by providing new facilities, enhanced activity spaces and sympathetic restoration works to an historic monument.

Clever use of space incorporates an ‘urban edge’, a landscape designed to promote full use of the exterior space, with a contemporary youth zone and a cluster of sensory gardens. The solid urban edge division allows these two distinctively different outdoor areas to co-exist next to each other, whilst complimenting the surrounding environment. The interior design includes specialist learning zones and full access for all. It will engage varying end users, including those needing disabled access, allowing the space to be of greater benefit for the community and ensure young people experience a range of activities and support in one location.

We’ve taken the kitchen aesthetic and brought it into the public space, with chunky stainless steel and solid oak table tops; putting quality materials where they are appropriate and robust, no-nonsense engineering to the rest of the interior. In creating the 1802 brand and environmental graphics, we chose a name with historical reference (1802 was the date that West India Quay first opened), recognising 1802’s position as part of the museum whilst allowing it to legitimately stand alone as a destination.

The graphics take on a modern, contemporary feel. As the building speaks for itself we used simple references to materials and water, giving a palette of colours deriving from rusting metal. Oversized text and coloured bands have been applied directly to the walls, complimenting rather than dominating the environment. Above all it’s about creating a place where people will enjoy good food, fine wine and ice cool larger, where the host just wants everyone to relax and have a good time. The design should compliment the experience.
