A SACRED TRUST

We sincerely hope that you will fi nd this prayer book a source of comfort and solace.

We are reverently mindful that ours is a sacred profession that ultimately touches the lives of our families.

Our responsibility to our community and to the traditional values which we share are the principles on which our fi rm was founded in 1883.

This commitment has made us one of the few Jewish funeral homes in the country whose ownership has passed from father to son for fi ve generations.

Our founding reputation remains our philosophy: service, tradition and dignity.

As members of our Jewish community, we are committed to preserve the high standards of professionalism and service demanded by Jewish tradition.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A FUNERAL

The chapel service provides the mourner with the environment to express grief; to see friends and family, which helps the bereaved to accept the reality of death.

The Jewish funeral ritual is a profound expression of our Jewish heritage. It doesn’t just recognize that a life has ended; it honors that a life has been lived. It gives purposeto the Jewish will to survive.

The funeral helps the survivors to heal emotionally and gives us comfort and elevates our sense of family. Grief is part of the healing process that allows us to separate ourselves from the deceased person and go on with our lives.

The funeral brings together a community of mourners who, by supporting each other, can help themselves through a diffi cult period.

To resolve their grief, mourners need to accept the reality of death not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. It is for this reason that the traditional funeral is important.

A funeral confirms the reality of death and serves as a focus for expressing feelings of loss.

“Gathering together for the service, we offer support and share sorrow. Grief shared is grief diminished.” —Rabbi Earl Grollman

LET US SERVE YOUR NEEDS

Making funeral arrangements can be an extremely arduous and stress-filled experience. Levine’s provides emotional comfort and peace of mind during one of life’s most diffi cult times.

We have relationships with funeral directors nationally and internationally. Our qualified directors are here to answer your questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and can help you make the most complicated of circumstances simpler.

Many families make pre-arrangements with Levine’s not only to spare survivors emotional strain, but also to ensure that their wishes are carried out in the manner that they desire.

Levine’s responsibility to the community and our traditional values are the principles upon which our fi rm was founded in 1883.

This commitment has made us one of the few Jewish funeral homes in the country that has passed from father to son for fi ve generations.

Our founding reputation remains as our philosophy: service, tradition, and dignity.

INFORMATION FOR MOURNERS

AV E L I M (Mourners)

One is considered a mourner upon the death of the following relatives: father and mother, husband or wife, son and daughter, brother and sister (also half-brother and half-sister).

K ’ R I A H (Rending of Garment)

To indicate grief, a cut is made in the outer garment or black ribbon worn by the mourner. For a parent, the rend is made on the upper left side downward over the heart;for other relatives, it is made on the right side downward. This ceremony is performed standing up to teach us to “meet all sorrow standing upright.” This cut garment or black ribbon is worn for seven to thirty days of Shiva, except on Shabbat and Festivals.

The mourner says the following:

Praised are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, righteous Judge.

The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away, praised be the name of the Lord.

S H M E R A H (Shomer)

The watching over the deceased by a pious Jew or Jewess until members of the family assemble for the funeral services, so that the deceased is not left unattended. Tehilim (Psalms) are recited.

TAC H R I C H I MThe traditional white burial shrouds symbolizing that all people are equal before their Creator.

K ’ V U R A HThe actual burial in the ground, or fi lling in the grave with earth. To participate in fi lling the grave is a mitzvah.

K A DDI S HThe mourner’s Kaddish is recited by the mourners in the synagogue at every service morning and evening for a period of eleven months from the date of burial. The Kaddish is recited in the presence of a Minyan. Kaddish is repeated on the anniversary date of death. (Yahrzeit).

S H I VAShiva refers to the fi rst seven days of intensive mourning, including the day of burial. One hour of the seventh day is regarded as a full day. Mourning customs are not observed on the Sabbath or Festivals. When the burial takes place prior to a Festival and the mourners have observed Shiva for at least one hour before the holiday begins, then the period of Shiva is terminated with the advent of the Festival at sunset. When the burial occurs on a Festival, the Shiva begins on the night the Festival is over. The lastday of the Festival is considered the fi rst day of Shiva.

A light (Shiva candle) is kept burning in the House of Shiva during the entire seven days.

A child under thirteen years of age is not obligated to observe the mourning rites.

It is customary for mourners to remain at home on weekdays sitting on a low seat, wearing slippers rather than leather shoes and refraining from transacting any business.

The custom of covering mirrors in the house of Shiva has been interpreted as a symbol of avoiding excessive self-concern seeing ourselves in the depressed state of a mourner.

S H E L O S H I M (First thirty days)

The secondary period of mourning is called Sheloshim which includes the fi rst thirty days after the funeral. The rend ribbon or garment is worn during the Sheloshim period except on the Sabbath and Festivals. Mourners should not participate in any festivity or amusement during these thirty days. In the case when the deceased was a parent, this principle applies for the entire fi rst year.

U N V E I L I N G O F M E M O R I A LThere is no rule on how long after death the unveiling should take place. It is suggested that a memorial or monument may be erected anytime after Sheloshim and preferably before the fi rst year has ended.

V I S I TAT I ON AT G R AV E SVisitation at graves of departed may be made as often as one wishes following the period of Sheloshim.

It is customary to visit graves during the months of Elul and Tishri, prior to the High Holy Days particularly Yahrzeit (Anniversary of day of death).

YA H R Z E I T (Anniversary of day of death)

The Yahrzeit is observed annually on the date of death. When three or more days have elapsed from the day of death until the interment. The fi rst Yahrzeit is observed on the anniversary of the interment, and thereafter, it is observed on the anniversary of the death.

The Yahrzeit commences on the preceding day at sunset and is concluded on the anniversary day of death at sunset.

During this time, the Yahrzeit light is kept burning and Kaddish is recited in the Synagogue during services.

It is customary to make a charitable contribution in memory of the deceased.

Y I Z KO RThe memorial prayer of Yizkor is said four times a year during synagogue services. It is said on Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, Pesach and Shavuot. It is not said during the fi rst year of mourning.

B E L ON G I N G S O F T H E DE PA RT E DArticles belonging to the dead such as a wig or artifi cal teeth (considered a part of one’s body) are not used by others; these should be buried with the person who died. Ornaments such as rings, pins, and clothes are used by the living.

C ON D O L E N C E C A L LIt is a Mitzvah, a worthy deed, to pay a condolence call after the funeral. By our visit we show the mourners that we do not forget them; we illustrate to them that we understand their sorrow and we share it with them.

Levity and laughter are obviously out of place. Rather, theconversation should center around the personality and character of the departed. In this manner, the departed is memorialized.

For information concerning the observance of the mourning period or any religious questions,

please consult your Rabbi or the Levine staff .

Some have the custom to complete the psalm:

PSALM 91Carry the coffi n to the grave (with the feet facing the grave), stopping seven times, with approximately eight feet between stops. Each time the coffi n is moved toward the grave, those escorting it begin Psalm 91 (below) and recite it until the verse that begins “For His Angels” (see below). The verse contains seven words, and at each stop, a further word is recited until at the seventh stop, the verse is completed. As those who carry the coffi n make the fi rst stop, they recite the word “For.” After pausing, they begin the psalm again, and after approximately eight feet, recite “For His Angels” and stop. This procedure is repeated until the verse is completed at the seventh stop. (No stops are made on days when Tachanun is omitted and on Erev Shabbos and Erev Yom Tov after noon.)

PSALM 91Whoever sits in the refuge of the Most High, he shall dwell in the shadow of the Almighty, I will say of Hashem, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, I will trust in him.” For He will deliver you from the ensnaring trap, from devastating pestilence. With His pinion He will cover you, and beneath His wings you will be protected; shield and armor is His truth. You shall not fear the terror of night; nor of the arrow that fl ies by day; nor the pestilence that walks in gloom; nor the destroyer who lays waste at noon. Let a thousand encamp at your side and a myriad at your right hand, but to you they shall not approach. You will merely peer with your eyes and you will see the retribution of the wicked. Because {you said}, “You, Hashem, are my refuge,” you have made the Most High your dwelling place. No evil will befall you, nor will plague come near your tent. For His angels He will charge for you to protect you in all your ways

Some have the custom to complete the psalm:

On palms they will carry you, lest you strike your foot against a stone. Upon the lion and the viper you will tread; you will trample the young lion and the serpent. For he has yearned for Me and I will deliver him; I will elevate him because he knows My Name. He will call upon Me and I will answer him, I am with him in distress; I will release him and I will bring him honor. With long life will I satisfy him, and I will show him My salvation.

WOMAN OF VALOR ( S E L E C T E D V E R S E S )

A good wife, who can fi nd?Her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband trusts in herAnd nothing shall he lack. She renders him good and not evilAll the days of her life. She opens her hand to the needyAnd extends her hand to the poor. She is robed in strength and dignityAnd cheerfully faces whatever may come. She opens her mouth with wisdom. Her tongue is guided by kindness. She tends to the aff airs of her householdAnd eats not the bread of idleness. Her children come forward and bless her.Her husband, too, and he praises her;“Many women have done superbly. But you surpass them all.”Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain. But a God-revering woman is much to be praised.Place before her the fruit of her hands;Wherever people gather, her deeds speak her praise.

SELECTED VERSES FROM SCRIPTURE

( E N G L I S H / H E B R E W )

O Lord, what is man that Thou takest knowledge of him; or the son of man, that Thou makest account of him! Man is like unto a vanity; his days are as a shadow that passeth away.In the morning he fl ourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening he is cut down and witherest.Thou turnest man to contrition and sayest: ‘Return ye children of men!’O that they were wise, that they could consider their latter end!For when man dieth, he shall carry nothing away – his glory shall not descend after him.Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright, for the endof that man is peace. The Lord redeemeth the souls of His servants, and none of them that trust in Him shall be forsaken.

FROM THE WISDOM OF . . . BEN SIRA

Fear not death; we are destined to die. We share it with all who ever lived, with all who ever will be. Bewail the dead, hide not your grief, do not restrain your mourning. But remember that continuing sorrow is worse than death. When the dead are at rest, let their memory rest, and be consoled when the soul departs.

Death is better than a life of pain, and eternal rest than constant sickness.

Seek not to understand what is too diffi cult for you, searchnot for what is hidden from you. Be not over-occupied with what is beyond you, for you have been shown more than you can understand.

As a drop of water in the sea, as a grain of sand on the shore are man’s few days in eternity. The good things in life last for limited days, but a good name endures forever.

O God, our Father, You redeem our souls from the grave, You are the Rock of our salvation. Forsake us not in time of trouble, in days of distress and desolation. Help us to endure, O Lord, for we have placed our hope in You.

POETRY BY ALVIN FINE

Birth is a beginning, and death a destination; But life is a journey, a going - a growingFrom stage to stage.

From childhood to maturity and youth to age,From innocence to awareness and ignorance to knowing; From foolishness to discretion and then perhaps to wisdom.

From weakness to strength or strength to weakness-And, often, back again. From health to sicknessAnd back, we pray, to health again.

From off ense to forgiveness, from loneliness to love,From joy to gratitude, from pain to compassion,And grief to understanding - from fear to faith.

From defeat to defeat to defeat - until, looking backward or ahead,We see that victory lies not at some high place along the way, But in having made the journey, stage by stage -A sacred pilgrimage.

Birth is a beginning, and death a destination; But life is a journey, a sacred pilgrimageMade stage by stage-from birth to deathTo life everlasting.

RABBINIC THOUGHTS & PRAYERS

Filling the empty chairRav Nachman of Brezlav once asked his student,

is the chair you are sitting on empty?

Ridiculous, replied the student, how can it be? I am sitting on it!

But it IS possible for a person sitting on that chair to feel empty.

Then, the chair is empty even when occupied?

And so we recall when someone else fi lled the place next to us in synagogue

or at the head of the table for a holiday meal,or the chair closest to the kitchen.

Now, even though we, or someone else, may fi ll that seat, no one can fi ll that PLACE

The seat of a loved one, in whose place now residesmemories of love, of time spent together:

How we miss them at these moments, at holidays, at family moments!

No one can fi ll that feeling of emptiness!

At the Simcha, when we smile and think,

she would have so enjoyed this experience, or, he would have been so proud.

At the fl ash of doubt, when we cry:

What would he have done in this situation?,

or, she would have comforted me, and things would have felt better.

How do we fi ll their empty chairs?

We teach their life lessons. We live out their legacy to us.

RABBINIC THOUGHTS & PRAYERS

Filling the empty chair (cont.)We fi ll ourselves with their inspiring stories.

We fi ll ourselves with their enduring love.

We feel their presence, within us. We feel G-d’s presence, among us.

And then, when others come to us, seeking advice,

As we are seated in that chair that our loved one once occupied, we pass on that same love,

We share those same teachings from those who came before us.

And we fi ll the void.

And our place in this world, without them does not seem so lonely or empty anymore.

In one of his most beautiful essays about prayer, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote,

Faith is like a fl ashlight beam thrown ahead of us into the darkness.

Its beam is always more visible when grief clouds about us.

In some such events, an experienceof faith kindles an unquenchable light.

During this diffi cult time, may the light of our tradition and heritage

light your path and bring you comfort.

May the light of your loved one shine on as a blessing.

RABBINIC THOUGHTS & PRAYERS

“Let us treasure the time that we have, and resolve to use it well, counting each moment precious.

Our lives are a chance to apprehend some truth, to experience some beauty, to conquer some evil,

to relieve some suff ering, to love and be loved, to achieve something of lasting worth.

Help us, O G-d, to fulfi ll the promise that residesin each of us, so that we may conduct ourselves,

that generations hence it can be said of us:The world is better because for a brief time they lived in it.”

I am always moved by both the poignancyand the poetry of these words.

They remind us that even the stark, sobering fi nality of death, even the inevitable mortality of our lives

are overshadowed by what might be described as “our immortality of infl uence.”

Death is not the end.

Our loved ones never quite die so long as their love, their memory, their inspiration

continue to live on in the hearts of those to whom they were precious.

Psalm 90, as translated by Stepen Mitchell.

Teach us how short our time is;

Let us know it in the depths of our souls.

Show us that all things are transient,

As insubstantial as dreams,

And that after heaven and earth

Have vanished, there is only You.

Fill us in the morning with Your wisdom;

Shine through us all our lives.

Let our hearts soon grow transparent

In the radiance of your love.

Show us how precious each day is;

Teach us to be fully here.

And let the work of our hands

Prosper, for our little while.

TZIDUK HA’DINThe Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice; a G-d of faithfulness and without iniquity, righteous and just is He.

The Rock, perfect in all His works. Who can say to Him ‘What have You done?’ He rules below and above, He brings death and restores life, brings down to the grave and raises up from there.

The Rock, perfect in all His deeds. Who can say to Him, ‘What do You do?’ You Who says and fulfills, do undeserved kindness with us, and in the merit of him [Isaac] who was bound [on the altar] like a lamb, hearken and grant our request.

Righteous One in all His ways, O Rock Who is perfect, slow to anger and abundant in mercy, take pity and spare both parents and children, for to You, O Lord, pertain forgiveness and mercy.

Righteous are You, Lord, to bring death and to restore life, for in Your hands are entrusted all spirits. Far be it from You to erase our memory. Look towards us with mercy, for Yours, O Lord, are mercy and forgiveness.

A man, whether he be a year old, or whether he lives a thousand years, what does it profi t him? For is it not as if he has never been? Blessed be the True Judge, Who bringsdeath and restores life.

Blessed be He, for His judgment is true, as He scans everything with His eye, and He rewards man according to his account and his judgment. Let all give praise to His Name.

We know, Lord, that Your judgment is right. You are righteous when You speak and pure when You judge, and none shall question Your judgments. Righteous are You, Lord, and Your judgments are just.

You are the True Judge, Who judges with righteousness and truth. Blessed is the True Judge, for all of His judgments are righteous and true.

The soul of every living creature is in Your hand, righteousness fi lls Your right and left hand. Have mercy on the remnant of the fl ock under Your hand, and say to the angel of death, ‘Hold back your hand!’

You are great in counsel and mighty in action, Your eyes are watching all the ways of man, to give man according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds.

That is to say that the Lord is Just; He is my Strength, and there is no injustice in Him.

The Lord has given and the Lord has taken. May the Name of the Lord be blessed.

He, being compassionate, pardons iniquity, and does not destroy; time and again He turns away His anger, and does not arouse all His wrath.

PRAYERS ON VISITING GRAVES

These prayers and meditations, in addition to the Psalms, the El Maleh Rachamim and the Kaddish may be recited.

sDo not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.I am a thousand winds that blow;I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain;I am the gentle autumn’s rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled fl ight.I am the soft star that shines at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.I am not there; I did not die.

PRAYER AT CHILD’S GRAVE

“In Thee, O Lord, have I taken refuge; be Thou to me a rock of refuge; Therefore for Thy name’s sake lead me and guide me. Into Thy hand, I commit my spirit; Thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, Thou God of truth. For Thou has seen mine affl iction; Thou has taken cognizance of the troubles of my soul.” –Psalm 31

O God, from the depths I cry unto Thee. Thou has taken away from me my dear child. O help me to feel that the ways of Thy providence are wise and good, though we understand them not.

Thou, O God, knowest that my soul would not question Thy justice; I would not rebel against Thy decree. It is the tender and deep love which my dear child brought into my heart that draws me hither. O merciful Father, have mercy upon me and send the healing balm of Thy consolation to my grieving spirit.

In this moment my soul feels but little strength to praise. Yet if Thou didst take away this life, Thou also didst give it. O may the light of love which my child kindled within my heart continue to burn brightly, so that as I regain strength of my soul, I may cheer unto all my dear ones. Praised by Thou, O God, who comfortest the mourner with hope in life eternal. Amen.

PRAYER AT FATHER’S GRAVE

“Lord, who shall sojourn in Thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell upon Thy holy mountain? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh truth in his heart; that hath no slander upon his tongue nor doeth evil to his fellow nor taketh on a reproach against his neighbor; in whose eyes a vile person is despised, but he honored them that fear the Lord; he that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not; he that putteth not out his money on interest, nor taketh a bribeagainst the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.” –Psalm 15

In this silent grave repose the earthly remains of my best friend, my dearest benefactor appointed by God Himself to love and protect me during the tender years of my life, my dear and my beloved father. Oh, to hear thy voice again, to clasp thy hand and to look into thy fatherly eyes for strength and for courage and for comfort! How can I repay thee for all the devotion and loving kindness which I have received at your hands.

O Lord, show me the way and give me the will to live and to work so that I may refl ect honor upon my dear father’s memory. Thus will I also glorify Thy name, for Thou are the Father of the fatherless, and in Thy keeping are the souls of all our dear ones. Amen.

PRAYER AT MOTHER’S GRAVE

“Lord, my heart is not proud, nor mine eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in things too great, or in things too wonderful for me. Surely, I have stilled and quieted my soul;like a weaned child with its mother, my soul is with me like a weaned child. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and for ever.” –Psalm 131

O mother dear, I cannot think of thee as dead, though I stand before thine earthly grave, thy spirit livest and thy love is everlasting. Yea, a mother’s love is eternal, even as God is eternal who implanted that love in her heart? O mother dear, how can I begin now to thank thee or to repay thee for all that thou hast suff ered and endured in order to give me life and to shelter, protect and rear me until I had reached the age of discretion and independence. And even unto the last thou hast been my loving guide and my ever present inspiration. And now, O sacred spirit of my mother, I can off er thee only the tender tear of loving and devoted memory.

O God, help me to live a life worthy of my mother’s hope and prayer. Preserve her soul in Thine all-loving peace, and may her spirit ever keep me pure and clean so that when my time comes to leave this earthly dwelling, I may be found worthy to join my mother in her eternal abode of bliss in which the noble and the pure in spirit may behold Thy countenance in everlasting joy. Amen.

PRAYER AT HUSBAND’S GRAVE

O God, behold and see the sorrow of my heart. Widowed and bereft I mourn the loss of the dear companion of my life.

Help me, O God, to bear this burden bravely. Teach me to bend my will to Thy supreme will that doeth all things for the best, for all Thy ways are right and all Thy judgments just. Thou didst send me untold blessings through the gift of his loving care. For these my heart overfl ows with thankfulness. May I not mar the gratitude I here off ered by murmuring and complaints.

Grant I may live true to the hope and prayers which bound our hearts together. Fill me with zeal to carry out every noble thought he cherished and to fulfi ll every duty to my home and my dear ones which he bequeathed to me. May the memory of his love and faithfulness ever aid and inspire me.

I cast my burden upon Thee, O Lord. Uphold me in the hours of my weakness, for Thou art near to the broken and contrite heart. May my life prove that love is as strong as death. Grant me more and more of the comforting faith in life immortal. May Thy blessing of peace attend me through all my days. Amen.

PRAYER AT WIFE’S GRAVE

“Give her of the fruit of her hands; and may her deeds praise her within the gates.”–Proverbs 31

My heart cries unto Thee, Almighty God, out of the depths of my distress. Thou alone knowest the loneliness of my days, bereft of her whom Thou gavest me as my companion and helpmate. Let me not yield to despair! Help me to be loyal to every trust she reposed in me, and steadfast to every duty her passing away has left to me. Fill me with manly courage to live true to the ideals of purity and nobility with which she inspired me.

Grant unto me strength and unto our dear ones the steadfast resolve to cherish faithfully the spirit of love with which she fi lled our home. May the example of her goodness live on as an impulse to every good endeavor. May the bonds of our common sorrow unite more fi rmly the ties of our family aff ections. Teach me, O God, the lesson of resignation. Fill me with the fi rm trust that death does not end all, but that death, as in life, all are in Thy keeping. May I say with sincere humility: Thy thoughts are not our thoughts; nor are Thy ways our ways. For high as are the heavens above the earth, so high are Thy ways above our ways, and Thy thoughts above our thoughts. Amen.

PRAYER AT BROTHER’S GRAVE

“I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel; yea, in the night seasons my reins instruct me. I have set the Lord always before me; surely He is at my right hand. I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth, my fl esh also dwelleth in safety; for Thou wilt not abandon my soul to the netherworld; neither wilt Thou suff er Thy Godly one to see the pit. Thou makest me to know the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy, in Thy right hand bliss for ever more.” –Psalm 16

Tender memories fill my thoughts as I stand here by the grave of my brother. Precious was the blessing that God gave me in his life. A brother, indeed, was he at all times, kind and considerate in his words, thoughtful and generous in his deeds.

O God, in Thine infi nite wisdom and justice Thou has taken him from me. I sorely miss him. But the infl uence of his character is and ever shall be upon me. I pray Thee, O God, to strengthen my soul with an abiding faith in life hereafter; and give me courage to bear whatever Thy providence sends unto me. According to my power, may I never fail to aid others who are in need of sympathy andhelp. Amen.

PRAYER AT SISTER’S GRAVE

“Out of the depths have I called Thee, O Lord. Lord, hearken unto my voice; let Thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications. If Thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? For with Thee there is forgiveness, that Thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord: my soul waiteth for the Lord, more than watchmen for morning; yea, more than watchmen for the morning.”–Psalm 130

How precious to me was the deep love of my sister! And now, O God, that Thou has taken her from me there is a void which I often feel can never be fi lled.

Her kindness, her patience, her comforting words softened the trials of many a day. As I think of all this, how heavily is my heart bowed down by the sorrow of her being taken away.

As I stand in the peaceful quiet of this spot, divine hope whispers in my soul that she is at rest in Thy keeping. May this thought sustain me. May I be thankful unto Thee. O God, for the life of my dear sister; and may every thought of her incline my soul to deeds of kindness, mercy, and righteousness. Amen.
