The active ingredient contained in Levera tablets is Levetiracetam. Each Levera tablet contains 250 mg, 500 mg, 750 mg or 1000 mg of Levetiracetam.

Uses of Levera Tablets

Levera (Levetiracetam Tablets) is used as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial onset seizures in adults and children 1 month of age and older with epilepsy, in the treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children 6 years of age and older with idiopathic generalized epilepsy.

Dosing for Partial Onset Seizures (Adults 16 Years and Older).Start treatment with a daily dose of 1000 mg/day, given as twice-daily dosing (500 mg twice daily). Additional dosing increments may be given (1000 mg/day additional every 2 weeks) to a maximum recommended daily dose of 3000 mg.

Levera (Levetiracetam Tablets) is administered orally with or without food. The dosage of Levera tablets (Levetiracetam) is given below:

Dosing for Myoclonic Seizures in Patients 12 Years of Age and Older with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy: Treatment has to be started with a dose of 1000 mg/day, given as twice-daily dosing (500 mg twice daily). Increase the dosage by 1000 mg/day every 2 weeks to the recommended daily dose of 3000 mg.

Dosing for Primary Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures in Adults 16 Years and Older: Treatment has to be started with a dose of 1000 mg/day, given as twice-daily dosing (500 mg twice daily). The dosage may be increased by 1000 mg/day every 2 weeks to the recommended daily dose of 3000 mg.

Before taking Levetiracetam tablets, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), including Levera (Levetiracetam Tablets), increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in patients undergoing therapy with these medicines for any indication. Patients treated with any AED for any indication must be monitored for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and/or any unusual changes in mood or behavior.

This medicine may make you dizzy or drowsy, especially during the first month of treatment. Do not drive, use machinery, ride a bicycle, or do any activity that requires alertness until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcoholic beverages.Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medicine, especially mental/mood changes (such as irritability, aggression, agitation, anger, anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide). Children younger than 4 years may be at greater risk for increased blood pressure while using this medication. Withdrawal Seizures: Levera (Levetiracetam Tablets) must be gradually withdrawn

Contraindications

Levera is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to Levetiracetam or any other component of this medication.

Most common Levera side effects of with an incidence rate of 5% or more and greater than placebo include somnolence, infection, and irritability.

Get medical help immediately in case you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction to Levera (Levetiracetam Tablets), such as: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face, tongue or throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Somnolence, agitation, aggression, depressed level of consciousness, respiratory depression and coma were the symptoms observed in cases of Levetiracetam overdoses.

There is no specific antidote for an overdose with Levera (Levetiracetam Tablets). If necessary, elimination of the unabsorbed drug should be attempted by emesis or gastric lavage and the normal precautions should be observed to maintain the airways. General supportive care of the patient is indicated, including monitoring of vital signs and observation of the patient's clinical status. Standard haemodialysis procedures result in significant clearance of Levetiracetam (approximately 50% in 4 hours) and must be considered in cases of overdose.

Levetiracetam (Levera Tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category C . During animal studies with Levetiracetam, it was observed that developmental toxicity occurs at doses similar to or greater than human therapeutic doses. During pregnancy, this medication must be used only when clearly needed. It can harm an unborn baby.
