Cells, Tissues, and Organs❖ The body has five levels of organization:
Cells (Basic level)↓
Tissues↓
Organs↓
Organ Systems↓
Organism (Highest Level)

Cells & Tissues
• Cells are the basic units of life and make up all living things. In complex organisms, cells are specialized to perform specific functions.
• A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.

Tissues
• The human body has four main tissue groups:
1. Epithelial tissue- Functions as a protective boundary (skin)
2. Nerve tissue- Functions as a messaging system (brain and spinal cord)
3. Muscle tissue- Functions in movement4. Connective tissue- Functions to hold
parts together and insulate (bone, cartilage)

Organs and Organ Systems
• An organ is a structure that is made up of two or more types of tissue that work together to do a job.
• An organ system is a group of organs that work together to help the body meet its needs.

Stomach
• Epithelial: lines the stomach• Nervous: signals acid production, tells
brain when you’re hungry or full• Muscle: Physically breaks down food• Connective: supplies blood and nutrients
to stomach

Organ Systems
• The body’s organ systems work together to allow the human organism to grow, reproduce and maintain life. The organ systems include:–
– Integumentary– Skeletal system– Lymphatic system– Endocrine system– Muscular system– Respiratory system
– Digestive system– Urinary system – Circulatory system– Nervous system – Reproductive
system

Homeostasis
• Homeostasis is the ability of the body to maintain internal conditions.– For example, on a hot day you sweat to keep
the inside temperature constant even though the outside temperature changes. Avoid overheating from dehydration
– On a cold day you shiver to avoid hypothermia
