Engineering DiplomaLevel 2 Unit 5 Electrical and Electronic Circuits and Systems

Electronic systems are in almost every engineering system and product. This unit will help you learn the basis of electronic circuits, how they are built and how they work.

You will also learn how to recognise the components that make up electrical and electronic circuits and understand how they work together.

Level 2 Unit 5 Electrical and Electronic Circuits and Systems

L2 U5 Learning Outcomes:

■ Understand safe working practices in the workshop/ laboratory and understand relevant electrical and electronic principles

Be able to recognise and select components used in electrical and electronic circuits

Be able to construct an electronic circuit and understand its basic operating principles

Be able to test and find faults on electronic circuits.

Level 2 Unit 5 Electrical and Electronic Circuits and Systems

Task 1

In this task you construct electronic circuits and work out various values for circuit properties

■ You will be give a circuit diagram and components and have to safely construct the circuit

■ Write a short report analysing the circuit

■ Calculate values for resistance, current, voltage and power in circuit

■ Calculate the size of a fuse needed in a mains appliance.

Task 2

You will be asked to identify electronic components both physically and from electronic circuit diagrams.

■ You will be given 12 different electrical/electronic components. Identify as many as you can

■ You will been given an electronic circuit diagram and need to select two suitable components for use in the circuit

■ You will been given another electronic circuit diagram and need to select a further two suitable components for use in this circuit.

Task 3

You will need to carry out fault finding on circuits using test equipment

■ You will be given an electronic circuit and appropriate test equipment. Measure and record the following: Voltage, Supply current, Input waveform, Output waveform

■ You have been given an electronic circuit, which has a fault on it. Use the information and test equipment to locate the fault

■ You have been given a second electronic circuit, which has a fault on it. Use the information and test equipment to locate the fault.
