COMMUNICATIONS 205

Venice was not forwarded), including his offers to consider publication of my work, reached me in late March 1986, some two months after I had received his book for review, by which time my questions regarding the source for his documentary appendix were sufficiently troubling for me not to respond at all to his letter. (I regret that I did not at least acknowledge receiving his letter, and for that I apologize.)

Regarding Luisi's item I) above, the book does include 311 documents, but only 265 of them pertain to music at the Scuole Grandi (actually 270 if five duplicates are counted separately); the remainder concern the company of singers, the scuole piccole, and the composer Innocentius Dammonis. [. ..] Regarding his other items, I will let my previous statements stand.

Once more let me emphasize that I did not approach Luisi's book with malice, and I am not so much angered by the situation as saddened that communication among scholars, even, as in the case of this book, when they are ostensibly collaborating, could be so inadequate.

Translation of Professor Luisi's communication and slight abbreviation of all three communications as indicated by bracketedpoints of ellipsis was done by the editor.

To the Editor of the JOURNAL:

A PROVISIONAL HANDLIST OF SOURCES TO BE INCLUDED IN Manuscripts of Fifteenth-Century Polyphony in Great Britain (to appear in the RISM B Series) has recently been completed, and additions, either of new items or of those accidentally omitted, are now sought. Copies of the list are available from Dr. Andrew Wathey, Downing College, Cambridge CB2 IDQ, England, to whom information about additional sources should be sent. Strict confiden- tiality will be observed wherever requested, and a suitable acknowledgement provided. The volume is concerned solely with manuscripts of polyphony at present housed in collections (public and private) within the United King- dom; sources written in the British Isles but now held elsewhere are thus excluded.

ANDREW WATHEY Downing College, Cambridge

To the Editor of the JOURNAL:
