Hobart, Australia’s most southerly capital is one of the most picture perfect cities in the world. With towering Mt Wellington standing guard over the city, it has spectacular views, a real nautical feel and the sandstone buildings provide an olde worlde appearance to this modern multicultural town. Walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats on a spring day and you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants.

Water dominates in Hobart with the majestic Derwent River separating the Eastern suburbs from the city and making them accessible via only the Tasman Bridge, the Bowen Bridge at Elwick, or the bridge at the strangely named, Bridgewater.

The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of small marinas crowded with yachts and dinghys dotted all around the coves and little bays of the city that are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot.

The imposing figure of Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. The whole family will love the breathtaking scenery.

At Taranna on the Port Arthur Highway

About 75m to the east of Hobart is the historically significant Tasman Peninsula area, where most of the convict folk were deported to and housed in harsh conditions. The location was chosen for its isolation and stopped prisoners from being able to escape easily. It is a great day trip, as you take in the Port Arthur Historical site, the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park (see great offer below), and other natural features like The Blow Hole and The Tessellated Pavement.

South of Hobart -

At Grove in an authentic Huon Valley apple shed, the Apple and Heritage Museum provides a comprehensive insight into the lives of the Huon ’s early settlers. There is a free picnic area and heritage apple orchard to explore.

3 THINGS YOU

SHOULD NOT MISSTahune Airwalk (p.14 ) located at the Forest and Heritage Centre near Geeveston is one of Tassie’s great experiences. The Airwalk takes you through the treetops of a eucalyptus forest at a 3 storey height above the forest floor, allowing you a birds-eye view of the tree species and forest life. The highlight is the cantilevered platform extending out over the Huon and Picton Rivers. Awesome!

Huonville is the gateway to the South and is an easy 30 min drive from Hobart. The Visitor’s Centre as you enter town has all the info you need. Visit the Apple Museum, Ride the Huon Jet (voucher p.14) and then venture further south to experience Hastings Caves, Tahune Airwalk, Eagle Cable Hang Gliding, Ida Bay Railway and the many bike trails and walks. Ida Bay is Tasmania’s last narrow-gauge bush railway and it runs 7 km from Lune River down to the secluded Deep Hole anchorage. Enjoy a swim or picnic at Deep Hole or take a short walk before making the return trip. There are walking tracks to Southport Lagoon and Southport Bluff.

Hastings Caves are located near Geeveston and provide families with a triple treat. The Newdegate Cave tour is a 45 min ranger guided experience, the thermal pools are great for a warm dip at any time of year, and the waling trails wind their way through picturesque forest among the BIG trees.

Did You Know? From October to March, Clarence is host to a huge range of free family Festivals.

The Seafarer’s Festival on October 23 features games, rides and stalls where children can learn all about our seafaring history and lifestyle, explore tall ships or go for a row on the bay.

Carols by Candlelight (December 11), the Australia Day Breakfast on the Bellerive Boardwalk (26 January), the Clarence Jazz Festival (21 – 26 February) and the Richmond Village Colonial Fair (18 March) each have special children’s activities and are just some of the other outdoor events the whole family will love.

Entry is free to all Clarence events and there are plenty of activities just for kids! Visit www.ccc.tas.gov.au to find out more!

Rosny Farm

Rosny Farm is a unique cultural centre in the City of Clarence. The site has important historical roots as a fine example of an early walled farmyard containing a beautiful heritage listed sandstone barn and farm cottage, including an old school house. It runs school holiday programs.

Rosny Farm is open to the public on Tuesday to Friday from 11.00am to 4.00pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4.00 pm, and is closed between Christmas and New Year. Guided tours can be arranged. The Rosny Farm is located adjacent to the Eastlands Shopping Centre.

Just a short walk from Bellerive Village is the Eastlands Shopping Centre, offering a range of department stores and specialty shops so the family can pick out those special gifts or treats. (p.19) The undercover Clarence Aquatic Centre has a range of pools for all levels of swimming and is the perfect temperature all year round. Clifton Beach is patrolled throughout the summer for safe family fun or why not enjoy a trail ride along Seven Mile Beach, or the Tangara Trail?

Clarence has 191 kilometres of coastline, providing many opportunities to enjoy the area’s natural coastal environment.

Fun Fact!

Cricket at Bellerive Oval

Barilla Putt & Play (Voucher on p.37) on the way to Richmond is a great place to stop for a quick game of mini golf and a family meal.

Richmond Historic Village

Step back in time and visit Richmond, an historic town nestled in the rolling hills of the Coal Valley wine region. An amazing number of beautiful old stone buildings constructed by convict labour have stood the test of time.

In the heart of Richmond lies Australia’s oldest stone bridge, dating back to 1823.

Visit the Richmond Gaol and lock yourself in one of the ghostly cells. You can relive your childhood and get lost in a maze or see what Hobart used

to look like through a giant’s eyes at Old Hobart Town (see below). It is a fabulous recreation that takes you back 150 years. There’s lots of colonial accommodation available in Richmond, along with restaurants, cafes and an endless array of local arts and crafts. Just exploring Richmond on foot is a delight.

Also nearby is the Bonorong Conservation Park, which cares for and develops native animals, and ZooDoo (voucher p.15) where you can see one of Tasmania’s largest collections of native, agricultural and exotic animals, including two rare white lions.

Shopping in Hobart is diverse and is spread among four main areas: The CBD, Rosny, Kingston and Glenorchy/Moonah. Rosny is home to Eastlands (see opposite) which is a large multi level mall with national chain stores and local shops. The CBD has Myer, many small arcades and street shopping in Murray, Liverpool and Bathurst Streets and Elizabeth Street Mall (outdoor mall). Parking is available and pretty good. Esprit Kids and Smiggle in Murray Street are two shops kids love.

Kingston has the ever expanding Channel Court which is mall sized but mainly an outdoor precinct. It has lots of food shops and eateries.

The Elizabeth St/Main Rd strip is basically one long stretch of restaurants, takeaways and shops from the CBD, through Nth Hobart, onto Moonah and finishing at Northgate Mall in Glenorchy. It has many kids clothing shops, computer stores, shoe shops and kid’s toy stores along its length.

Although not as large as Eastlands, Northgate in Glenorchy has many national chain stores, also with that indoor shopping mall experience.

Last but not least, Hobart’s most famous shopping experience is of course Salamanca Market! From 8am-3pm every Saturday, Salamanca Place on the waterfront comes alive with hundreds of vendors selling mainly hand crafted arts, crafts and foods. Thousands of people flock there each week no matter the weather, to sample local delicacies, listen to the local Andean band and buy organically grown local produce. On any visit to Hobart, it’s not to be missed!

If you are feeling active, grab your bike and ride the Derwent, Clarence or Glenorchy trails (maps available from councils), play on one of the great beaches at Lauderdale, Clarence or Kingston, or run amok on a Derwent riverside playground.

When the weather is less friendly, there is a laser tag at Zone 3, roller skating at Woody’s, Ice Skating in Glenorchy, heated aquatic centres in Kingston (see opposite), the CBD (see p.10) and Clarence. There are cinemas in Rosny, Glenorchy and CBD. The PCYC (www.pcyctas.org/hobart) of course has great kids programmes. Go on - Get Out There!!!

Hungry? Ah, food mmmmmmm!!!It’s time for a food break and you’ve come to the right place!!!Hobart has an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal or that special occasion. What is the local speciality???? Seafood of course!!! Scallops are the local delicacy but it’s all great.

There are three main areas to try: The Waterfront, North Hobart and Sandy Bay. At Constitution Dock the seafood is fresh and cheap.

Cold Rock Icecreamery in Nth Hobart (p.23) is a new innovation. Smash and Mix lollies, chocolates, fudge and fruit with your favourite icecream flavour for a taste sensation. Pretzel World (voucher p.23) offers sweet and savoury pretzels that are great as a snack or a meal. Mmmmmmm….Pretzels!!

Up in Elizabeth St North Hobart overlooking the city (a bit too far to walk), there are restaurants, cafes and bakeries aplenty, with cuisines from just about every country on the planet. La Porchetta (see below) and Fish 349 are favs here.

Sandy Bay also features a large amount of eateries. Among them is Mee Wah Chinese Restaurant. This place is not for those on a budget, but the service and the quality of food is as good as it gets!

If it is keeping the kids occupied whilst you enjoy your meal is what you’re after, then the Carlyle Hotel in Moonah or the Granada Tavern in Derwent Park, The Foreshore Hotel in Lauderdale or The Shoreline Hotel Howrah are the answer. They all feature kid’s meals, entertainment and have great playgrounds!

Come and discover the magic of the Tamar Valley. A short drive north of Launceston the valley is actually on both sides of the river and is referred to as East and West Tamar. West Tamar has the towns of Exeter, Beaconsfield and Beauty Point which all have much to offer families, whilst across in East Tamar, Georgetown is its main town which is surrounded by wineries and produce farms dotted through the hillsides.

A visit to the Tamar Valley wouldn’t be complete without popping into Grindelwald and taking in the delights of this Swiss styled village (inside front cover). Shops, bakery, mini golf, restaurants, hotel, jumping pillow, lake with paddle boats and even a golf course! It has lots to amuse and entertain anyone. Tasmania Zoo (back cover) has an awesome collection of animals, and now runs night safaris (voucher p 31).

Nearby is the Glengarry Maze (see opposite)where you can “lose yourself ” for a while, before “discovering” more of what the diverse area has to offer.

The town of Beaconsfield has an awesome skate park, then go and explore the history of the area at the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre (p.37). Continue down the road to Beauty Point, where the name says it all. The Australian Maritime College is located here but it is also where platypus and echidnas await you at Platypus House and right next door seahorses as Seahorse World. They are located on the old wharf in an amazing setting (voucher p.31).

It dominates the Stanley skyline and you can hike to the top OR catch a chairlift (maybe let the kids walk?!?). It is a long climb but the views are magic. The local beach is a beauty and has a grassy area with toilets.

The local Tourist Park (see opposite) is a great place to stay as it is right on the beach AND the golf course! You can also walk everywhere in town from there. Whilst in town you must sample the fresh seafood straight off the boat, (especially the crayfish) visit the Seaquarium, take the Stanley Seal Cruise, see how life used to be at Highfield, and check out the old fashioned village. The Stanley Pub serves the best meals in town with awesome views. Stanley is a great place to get away from it all for a weekend, as it has something for all the family.
