The Tasmanian weather varies according to location. The North West and North East are quite temperate with Summer temp (15-28) and winter (5-15). It can get quite windy. The West Coast is cooler and wetter. The East Coast is warmer during summer and can have very cold nights during winter. Hobart’s summer temp range is 12-25 and in winter 3-12 on most days.

Hobart is Australia’s most southerly capital and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world.
The imposing Mt. Wellington stands guard over the city which is hemmed in on all sides by the mountains and the mighty Derwent River. The city has a distinct nautical feel and the dominance of the sandstone buildings give it a real olde worlde charm. Hobart Hobart

Walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats on a spring day and you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples
to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants.
The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of yachts and dinghys dotting all the coves and little bays of the city which are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot.
The ever vigilant Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. The whole family will love the breathtaking scenery and be intrigued by the history and uniqueness that Hobart offers.

LetsGoKids Tasmania 2012/13
Shopping in Hobart is diverse and is spread among four main areas: The CBD, Rosny, Kingston and Glenorchy/Moonah. Rosny is home to Eastlands (see opposite) which is a large multi level mall with national chain stores and local shops.
The CBD has Myer, many small arcades and street shopping in Murray, Liverpool and Bathurst Streets and Elizabeth Street Mall (outdoor mall). Parking is available and pretty good. Esprit Kids and Smiggle in Murray Street are two shops kids love.
Kingston has the ever expanding Channel Court which is mall sized but mainly an outdoor precinct. It has lots of food shops and eateries.
The Elizabeth St/Main Rd strip is basically one long stretch of restaurants, takeaways and shops from the CBD, through Nth Hobart, onto Moonah and finishing at Northgate Mall in Glenorchy. It has many kids clothing shops, computer stores, shoe shops and kid’s toy stores along its length.
Although not as large as Eastlands, Northgate in Glenorchy has many national chain stores, also with that indoor shopping mall experience.

Come and discover the magic of the Tamar Valley. A short drive north of Launceston the valley is actually on both sides of the river and is referred to as East and West Tamar. West Tamar has the towns of Exeter, Beaconsfield and Beauty Point which all have much to offer families.
A visit to the Tamar Valley wouldn’t be complete without popping into Grindelwald and taking in the delights of this Swiss styled village (inside front cover). Shops, bakery, mini golf, restaurants, hotel, jumping pillow, lake with paddle boats and even a golf course! It has lots to amuse and entertain anyone. Accommodation is available. Tasmania Zoo has an awesome collection of animals, and a new Dinosaur area! (voucher p.44)
Nearby is the Glengarry Maze (p.46) where you can “lose yourself” for a while, before “discovering” more of what the diverse area has to offer.
The town of Beaconsfield has an awesome skate park, then go and explore the history of the area at the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre (voucher p.37). At the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, you can crawl through a pipe and look into the replica crushed cage that miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb were trapped in for 14 days. It has a new display dedicated to the harrowing rockfall on Anzac Day, 2006,

Continue down the road to Beauty Point, where the name says it all. It is where platypus and echidnas await you at Platypus House and right next door, seahorses as Seahorse World. They are located on the old wharf in an amazing setting (vouchers p.44).
From here you can look across the river and see the East Tamar Valley towns of Low Head and Georgetown. No need to drive all the way back to Lonnie though, as you can cross the river via the imposing Batman Bridge, an engineering feat that towers above the Tamar River. It has to be seen to be believed.
The Tamar Island Wetlands is a unique reserve just ten minutes drive from Launceston and is a nice spot for lovers of nature and particularly bird watchers. From the car park at Lucks Flats there is a gravel track to the boardwalk. The wide, level boardwalk of about 500 metres is suitable for pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs (no bikes), and extends over the swamps and crosses the river to two islets and finally Tamar Island.
A fantastic Interpretation Centre offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the great value of the wetlands. Over the summer holiday period, a Discovery Ranger program operates daily for children and the young at heart. Opening times for the Reserve are dawn to dusk every day of the year except Christmas Day. The Interpretation Centre is open from 9am - 5pm during the summer and closes an hour earlier in winter.

SheffieldThe Town of Murals - is the gateway to Tasmania’s iconic Cradle Mountain. Visitors are simply captivated by the 50 murals in and around this quaint country town. All around are the fertile farmlands of Kentish Plains, with Mt Roland dominating the southern skyline at 1233m above sea level. Sheffield has developed into a hub for fine arts and crafts people.
There are studio-galleries where local work can be seen and bought, including: art & essence, woodcraft, glass marbles, ceramics. Sheffield Market is held on every third Saturday. At the Working Art Space, a co-op of artists display their wares and also demonstrate their skills for visitors. Situated on the Mersey River, Devonport is the home port of the vehicle/passenger ferries Spirit of Tasmania I and II. This is an important link for all of Tasmania to the mainland and they sail daily. (You should see them turn around in the river – fascinating and the kids will love it.)
The town has a great coastline and popular walking tracks lead from the city centre, along the Mersey River foreshore parklands, all the way around to Mersey Bluff Beach. Families with children love this beach and playground area which incorporates picnic and BBQ areas and safe swimming.
You can also visit attractions such as the Tasmanian Arboretum (see above). This is a unique botanic Tree Park of native and exotic species sited on 45 glorious hectares, 10km south of Devonport at Eugenana. Spot a platypus on Founders Lake, take a walk or picnic with family and friends.

Tasman Peninsula75km to the east of Hobart is the historically significant Tasman Peninsula area, where most of the convict folk were deported to and housed in harsh conditions. The location was chosen for its isolation and stopped prisoners from being able to escape easily. It is a great day trip, as you take in the Port Arthur Historical site, the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park, and other natural features like The Blow Hole and The Tessellated Pavement.
You can then continue on to the magnificent East Coast which runs for 180 kms from Orford in the south to St. Helens in the north. The drive is stunning and the landscape virtually pristine.
