Special Olympics launched its Play Unified campaign around the world in 2014 to engage people in addressing critical world issues using sport as a catalyst. These critical world issues, which greatly affect individuals with intellectual disabilities and us all, include inactivity, intolerance and injustice.

Play Unified is about inspiring people, particularly youth, to be leaders who create change in their schools and communities through their examples of inclusion, understanding and acceptance.

One way people can inspire this change is by participating in the Special Olympics Unified Sports® program, which teams up peers with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Unified Sports® helps shatter stereotypes about individuals with disabilities and reveal champions of all abilities.

The Special Olympics Play Unified Ball is an iconic representation of the Play Unified campaign and of a sharable experience that transcends geopolitical, racial, economic, gender and intellectual constructs. When you pick up a ball and throw it to another, things can change. This simple action can have a resounding impact.

Special Olympics Connecticut emphasizes athlete inclusion - through sportscompetition – and getting healthy – two essential elements for enjoying life and making it meaningful.

The Special Olympics Unified Sports® program promotes inclusion – by bringing together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities together on teams to train and compete in sports. And, as a result, each teammate finds a place where they belong, can make friends, get physically fit and thrive.

With the kick-off of Special Olympics’ Play Unified campaign at the end of 2014, the importance – and necessity – of inclusion and the power of friendship are being reinforced here in our state and around the world. The red Play Unified ball you will see throughout this annual report symbolizes unity and serves as an invitation to get involved.

The concept of Unified Sports® competition had its beginnings right here in Southern New England, and now touches the lives of those in far-away lands like Africa, China, Russia and Australia. We’ve even seen, firsthand, how it positively transforms lives of Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners who are with our sister program in the Caribbean Islands of St. Kitts and Nevis.

With 80% of the high schools in Connecticut now offering Unified Sports® to their student athletes of different abilities, students, parents, coaches, administrators and communities are all working together to eliminate separation, isolation and bullying. Instead of pointing to the differences between individuals with and without intellectual disabilities, the emphasis now is on how similar we all are.

We’ve made inclusive sports a priority for decades now and have enlisted partners, like the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, to expand our Unified programs – and their positive impact. And it’s been an impetus to inspire inclusivity off the playing field as well.

This past year, our Special Olympics Unified Sports® Fitness Club has brought people together during group walks at quintessential Connecticut locations like the Coast Guard Academy and one of our state’s finest private schools. At these events, athlete groups are exercising together, learning about healthy practices and nutrition and motivating each other to keep going!

Join in. Get active. Play Unified with us in 2015. Together we can all make a significant difference in the lives of our athletes. Special Olympics – it’s about Revealing the Champion in All of Us, and that means YOU!

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities; giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

TEAM CONNECTICUT - 2014 SPECIAL OLYMPICS USA GAMES

Special Olympics Connecticut was proud to send 76 athletes and Unified Sports® partners and 22 coaches and delegates to the Special Olympics USA Games in and around Princeton, New Jersey, June 14-21, 2014. The athletes and Unified Sports® teams representing communities across our state, competed in 13 different sports.

Each member of Team Connecticut enthusiastically accepted the challenge to compete on a national level, and devoted much time and effort to preparing for the Games. In addition to their personal achievements in the sports they play, friendships were formed and memories that will last a lifetime were made along the journey to the Games.

Stephanie McMahon, WWE’s Chief Brand Officer, served as Team Connecticut’s Honorary Chair; SOCT Board Member Tom Joyce, as Chairman of Team Connecticut and Olympic Gold Medalist Kristine Lilly, as Honorary Team Connecticut Head Coach.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® FITNESS CLUBThe Special Olympics Connecticut Unified Sports® Fitness Club brings people with and without intellectual disabilities together to participate in regular physical activity that enhances their fitness and health and to make new friends.

The emphasis of the Club is on participation, rather than competition. Each Club member uses an activity tracking device to record miles walked – either independently, on group walks or at Universal Walks which Special Olympics Connecticut presents at different venues of interest throughout the year.

By accruing miles walked, members earn incentives, such as souvenir pins, while improving their health and making new acquaintances. In addition to fitness activities, Club members benefit from gaining information about best practices for living a healthy lifestyle.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® ADMINISTERED BY THE CONNECTICUT INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (CIAC)

The Special Olympics Unified Sports® program in schools brings together individuals with intellectual disabilities (athletes) and those without (Unified Sports® partners) to play sports, gain physical fitness and develop friendships. The program encourages all participants to Play Unified andto, ultimately, Live Unified.

When Special Olympics Connecticut and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) established a partnership in 1992, Connecticut became the first state to have its scholastic high school sports association run a Unified Sports® program. Because of this partnership and the program’s great success and impact - which continue today - Connecticut serves as a model for other scholastic sports associations across the country.

In 2014, 227 Connecticut elementary and secondary schools and 111 Connecticut high schools participated in Special Olympics Unified Sports® programs. Special Olympics Unified Sports® enriches the lives of its participants with intellectual disabilities who might not otherwise have opportunities to play sports and do so in an environment where they feel supported, encouraged and respected by their teammates and coaches. It helps to create friendships on – and beyond the playing field.

Special Olympics Unified Sports® in schools also helps to create a more positive school climate and encourages students without disabilities to become more aware, accepting and compassionate.

While Unified Sports® are played in accordance with game rules and with certified referees, the program emphasizes collaboration, joy and personal achievements instead of focusing on competition and winning.

Tournaments that are held as part of the program bring together teams from different schools, representing different towns.

Unified Sports currently offered in Connecticut schools include track & field, soccer, basketball, bowling and volleyball.

SO College

SO College connects college students and individuals with intellectual disabilities through sports and social activities. SO College activities inspire friendships and help students on campus come to better understand the needs and capabilities of Special Olympics athletes and their families.

Yale University, the University of Connecticut, Fairfield University, Quinnipiac University, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford all have SO College Clubs that are making a positive difference.

THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® PATHWAY

Special Olympics Unified Art is a program offered at schools across the state through Special Olympics Connecticut’s partnership with the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS).

It brings students with intellectual disabilities and their peers without disabilities together to create works of art that are displayed at public venues throughout the year.

Working collaboratively inspires participants to form new friendships, gain self-esteem, develop artistically and experience joy. The program enhances attitude, behavior and performance and fosters an inclusive school community.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SPORTS® IS OFFERED AT EVERY GRADE LEVEL

Young Athletes (Pre-k through Grade 2) Offers an introduction to Unified Sports® that focuses on development of gross motor skills and coordination, and peer interaction.

Elementary School Focuses on individual skill development and socialization.

Middle SchoolProvides opportunities for student athletes to enhance individual sports skills and engage in team-based competition.

High SchoolEmphasizes team building, confidence building, and positive social interaction among students with and without intellectual disabilities to inspire friendships and a more inclusive school climate.

Through our Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program, we provide free health screenings to athletes at our Summer Games, including dental, feet, eye and hearing checks and also provide, at no cost, such items as new glasses, mouth guards and written recommendations for more specialized care, if needed. We also offer life- changing and life-saving education at events throughout the year to enhance athletes’ fitness, nutrition and overall well-being.

Through the Healthy Athletes program, we are also improving the way health systems and medical practitioners interact with, understand, relate to and serve people with intellectual disabilities. By giving medical practitioner volunteers the opportunity to screen and interact with our athletes, they come to better understand the challenges individuals with intellectual disabilities often face in obtaining comprehensive medical care and they become better equipped to provide more compassionate and personalized care. This ultimately will help to ensure that individuals with intellectual disabilities receive more optimal healthcare and thrive as athletes.

Spread the Word to End the Word DayEnd the R-Word campaigns were conducted at many schools on March 5th in observance of “Spread the Word to End the Word” Day, an annual event to promote respect for all and eliminate hurtful and derogatory language.

Special Olympics Connecticut’s Global Messengers Athletes who serve as ambassadors for our organization gathered on October 4th for an all-day workshop to enhance their skills and share ideas.

Special Olympics Unified Sports® Youth Leadership SummitStudents who participate in the Special Olympics Unified Sports® Program at schools statewide gathered for the annual Youth Leadership Summit hosted by CIAC and Special Olympics Connecticut on January 9th at Wesleyan University.

Dream RideThe 14th Annual Dream Ride Experience, presented by Bozzuto’s, Inc., The Hometown Foundation and your local IGA Supermarket was held August 22nd -24th and raised $1,120,000 for Special Olympics. Participants represented 12 states and 3 countries, and the event included a motorcycle ride and Papa’s Dodge Dream Cruise.

Michaels Cup Unified Sports® Awards BanquetCIAC and Special Olympics Connecticut hosted the 11th Annual Michaels Jewelers Unified Sports® Awards Banquet on April 29th to honor student athletes, Unified partners, athletic directors and sponsors who participate in and support Special Olympics Unified Sports®.

Reception at the Governor’s ResidenceA springtime reception hosted by Jeffrey and Nancy Hoffman was held at the Governor’s Residence to announce Special Olympics Connecticut’s 2014 Northern Time Trials at The Loomis Chaffee School.

Mike Lupica and Jeff Wilpon Golf TournamentThe 21st Annual Mike Lupica and Jeff Wilpon Golf Invitational to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut took place on May 19th, with many sports greats in attendance.

Coaches Training DaySpecial Olympics Connecticut hosted its 4th Annual Coaches Training Day on March 30th. Training sessions in 13 different sports were held for the 201 coaches who attended.

LAZ Parking Golf TournamentLAZ Parking Charitable Foundation hosted their 5th annual golf tournament to support Special Olympics Connecticut on September 15th. The event raised $37,500.

Athlete FormalSouthern Connecticut State University’s Beta Mu Sigma fraternity hosted its 3rd Annual Athlete Formal for Special Olympics Connecticut athletes – an evening of music, dancing, and friendship - on November 7th.

Tim Shriver Book Signing Event and ReceptionSpecial Olympics Connecticut hosted “An Evening with Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver” at Yale University on December 10th. Dr. Shriver shared stories and reflections from his book, “Fully Alive: Discovering What Matters Most.”

Enterprise Golf TournamentThe 17th Annual Enterprise Holdings Charity Golf Tournament took place on September 18th at Lyman Orchards Golf Club and, for the first time, benefited Special Olympics Connecticut. The event raised $50,000.

Coastal Lighthouse Run Northwestern Mutual of Stamford hosted its 3rd Annual Coastal Lighthouse Run to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut at Harbor Point on October 5th.

Night of ThanksGlobal Messengers wrote thank you notes to donors and sponsors at our 8th Annual Night of Thanks on November 13th at TD Bank in Glastonbury.

Hotchkiss School Swim-a-thon Benefiting Special OlympicsThe Hotchkiss School hosted its 20th annual swim-a-thon benefiting the Special Olympics Northwest Swim Team and Special Olympics Connecticut on November 2nd.

The Penguin Plunge is a wintertime fundraiser for Special Olympics Connecticut and, for many, a much-anticipated annual tradition. Participants (a.k.a. “Penguins”) of all ages register and get pledges and then, on a designated date, join with other brave, fun-loving members of the community to jump into the chilly water of a lake or ocean for fun and to support athletes of all abilities in a most courageous way.

Over the Edge is a fundraiser ideal for those fearless individuals willing to rappel down the side of a tall building to heighten awareness and raise funds for Special Olympics.

Mohegan Sun hosted its 4th annual Over the Edge event to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut on September 5, 2014, providing the venue as well as employees to rappel. At the end of the day, 80 participants had descended the building and $108,000 was raised.

LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN

The Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics is one of the movement’s largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicles. Law enforcement officers volunteer their time and dedicate their efforts to organizing and hosting special events that share the mission of Special Olympics and raise money throughout the year – all to enrich the lives of Special Olympics athletes.

Every June, over 1,500 Connecticut officers carry the Special Olympics “Flame of Hope” through cities and towns across the state, covering over 530 miles in three days. Officers run the “Final Leg” and light the ceremonial cauldron during Opening Ceremonies for the Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games.

The 3rd annual gathering of The Champion’s Society took place at the Paragon Restaurant, on the 24th floor of the Grand Pequot Tower, at Foxwoods Resort Casino in October. Champion Society members enjoyed a private discussion and viewing of artifacts from the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, and fabulous dining experience with Chef Scott Mickelson. The evening was enhanced by the presence of new members, as the Society continues to grow, and a pinning ceremony in their honor. Gatherings are held annually to celebrate members’ commitment to securing the future of Special Olympics Connecticut.

ATHLETE LEADERSHIPAthlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) provide Special Olympics athletes with opportunities to demonstrate their communication and leadership skills and to serve as ambassadors for Special Olympics Connecticut. Athletes are particularly effective in spreading the message and values of the Special Olympics movement because they have very personal stories, experiences and insights to share.

Athletes who wish to expand their role with Special Olympics beyond sports can attend training sessions to refine their skills and can choose to take on meaningful roles which allow them to provide input and make decisions to help shape the future of the organization.

Athletes enrolled in our Athlete Leadership Programs are empowered to become volunteers,Games Committee members, Board of Directors members, and Global Messengers – athletes who represent and speak on behalf of our organization at public events and forums.

Through the efforts and enthusiasm of this dedicated group, more people will recognize the gifts those with intellectual disabilities possess and the ways in which they contribute to our communities and our world.

Global Messengers made 247 public appearances in 2014 to help promote understanding and awareness of Special Olympics Connecticut.
