It's amazing how many differenteffects can be produced by simple

knit and purl stitches. Take thiscowl – there's no lace, cabling or

colourwork, just the two most basicstitches in your repertoire, and yet

the pattern is simply beautiful. Plus,it only uses one ball of DK yarn, so it's an excellent stash buster!

Forget slimy snails at the bottom of the garden – Basil is onefellow you'll definitely want to stick around! A cuddly pal made

using a combination of soft DK and textured yarns, kids won't be able toresist this merry little mollusc and, provided everything is sewn on nice

and securely, he's safe for small children, too. Some parts of him arecrocheted instead of knitted – if you've never crocheted before, make

sure you read our tips panel for more.

fingerless mittens

G E T T H E V I N T A G E L O O K

Dainty and elegant, these lacylittle mittens are so stylish

and hark back to the fashionsof yesteryear.

They're also relatively quick andeasy to make as they use basiclace stitches to create an eyeletpattern down the back of the

hand, while the palm and thumbare knitted in stocking stitch. The

cast-on and cast-off edgesfeature a pretty picot design –

read our Knitwise panel overleaffor more details.
