Epidermis – Uppermost layer of the skin. Acts as a shield against dirt, harmful particles, etc…

Dermis – Collagen, Elastin and Sebaceous Glands. It provides resilience, elasticity natural moisturizer to the skin.

Subcutaneous Fat – Provides cushioning and insulation.

Understanding your skin

Dry Skin

o Due to low level of sebum secretion it feels tight and uncomfortable on washing.

o Tends to crack if not moisturized.

o Worsens with wind & extremes of temperature.

o Appears dull.

o May show thin expression lines.

Imbalance in skin lipids causes dry skin, which could be aggravated with soaps.

Understanding your skin Normal Skin –

Soft, Smooth , Even Tone, No blemishes , No visible pores , No greasy patches, Not very dry or very oily.

Oily Skin –

Dull appearance , Prone to Blackheads, Coarse pores & Pimples, Embarrassing blemishes with unwanted shine.

A great advantage of oily skin is that

it ages slowly.

Combination Skin

o Combination of oily and dry skin.

o The centre zone panel consisting of the nose, forehead and chin

called the “T Zone” is greasy.

o The remaining portions including the cheeks , mouth and the area

around the eyes are dry.

o Such skin poses a dilemma for skin care.

Unmasking Skin Skin

SKIN – the largest organ of the body.

o The total surface area of the skin ranges from 2500 sq. cm. (at birth) to 18,000 sq cm (at adulthood).

o Total weight of skin is about 4.8 kgs in men and 3.2 kgs in women.

o The thickness of skin varies – thinnest on the eyelids and thickest on the palms of hands and feet.

Why do we need to take care of Skin? Because the SKIN…

o Is the first line of defense.

o Appreciation of senses – touch, pain and temperature.

o Provide thermoregulation with the help of sweat glands & blood vessels.

o Protects from physical & chemical injury like UV rays.

o Prevents water loss.

o Synthesizes Vitamin D.

Why now?

My skin was perfectly fine earlier. Why Now?

There are lot of reasons that cause changes in the skin, like:

Non medical reasons:

o Environment - Pollution, dust, etc….o Seasonal Changes - too much of heat or cold humidity, etc…o Changes in the life style, Improper diet, Stress, etc..o Wrong usage of skin care products, Excessive sun exposure, etc….

Medical reasons:

o Changes in the hormones, o Menstrual Cycle, Drugs – taken for Medical reasons, Pills, etc.
